VANET has several different characteristics from MANET such as high mobility of nodes and frequent change of node density and network topology. Due to these characteristics, the network topology based protocol, often used in MANET, can not be applied to VANET. In this paper, we propose an emergency warning message broadcast protocol using range based relay node selecting algorithm which determines the minimal waiting time spent by a given node before rebroadcasting the received warning message. Because the time is randomly calculated based on the distance between sender node and receiver node, a node chosen as a relay node is assured to have a minimal waiting time, even though it is not located at the border of radio transmission range. The proposed emergency warning message broadcast protocol has low network traffic because it does not need to exchange control messages for message broadcasting. In addition, it can reduce End-to-End delay under circumstances of low node density and short transmission range in VANET.
Wireless communication technologies including vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) enable the development of more sophisticated and effective traffic information systems. This study presents a method to estimate vehicular travel times in a vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) environment. A novel feature of the proposed method is estimating individual vehicle travel times through advanced on-board units in each vehicle, referred to as self-estimated travel time in this study. The method uses travel information including vehicle position and speed at each given time step transmitted through the V2V and V2I communications. Vehicle trajectory data obtained from the VISSIM simulator is used for evaluating the accuracy of estimated travel times. Relevant technical issues for successful field implementation are also discussed.

We propose a cell selection and resource allocation scheme that assigns users to nearby accessible cells in heterogeneous wireless networks consisting of macrocell, femtocells, and Wi-Fi access points, under overload situation. Given the current power level of all accessible cells nearby users, the proposed scheme finds all possible cell assignment mappings of which user should connect to which cell to maximize the number of users that the network can accommodate at the same time. We formulate the cell selection problem with heterogeneous cells into an optimization problem of binary integer programming, and compute the optimal solution. We evaluate the proposed algorithm in terms of network access failure compared to a local ad-hoc based cell selection scheme used in practical systems using network level simulations. We demonstrate that our cell selection algorithm dramatically reduces network access failure in overload situation by fully leveraging network resources evenly across heterogeneous networks. We also validate the practical feasibility in terms of computational complexity of our binary integer program by measuring the computation time with respect to the number of users.

A most important thing in a connected dominating set(CDS)-based routing in a wireless ad-hoc network is to select a minimum number of dominating nodes and then build a backbone network which is made of them. Node failure in a CDS is an event of non-negligible probability. For applications where fault tolerance is critical, a traditional dominating-set based routing may not be a desirable form of clustering. It is necessary to minimize the frequency of reconstruction of a CDS to reduce message overhead due to message flooding. The idea is that by finding alternative nodes within a restricted range and locally reconstructing a CDS to include them, instead of totally reconstructing a new CDS. With the proposed algorithm, the resulting number of dominating nodes after partial reconstruction of CDS is not changed and also its execution time is faster than well-known algorithm of construction of CDS by 20~40%. In the case of high mobility situation, the proposed algorithm gives better results for the performance metrics, packet receive ratio and energy consumption.

As the number of mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets explodes, the need for new services or applications is also rapidly increasing. Smart class application is one of the emerging applications, in which most of contents are distributed to all members of a class simultaneously. It is highly required to select relay nodes to cover shadow area of radio as well as extend coverage, but existing algorithms in a smart class environment suffer from high control packet overhead and delay for exchanging topology information among all pairs of nodes to select relay nodes. In addition, the relay selection procedure should be repeated in order to adapt to the dynamic topology changes caused by link status changes or device's movement. This paper proposes the learning based relay selection algorithm to overcome aforementioned problems. The key idea is that every node keeps track of its relay quality in a fully distributed manner, where RQI (Relay Quality Indicator) is newly defined to measure both the ability of receiving packets from content source and the ability of successfully relaying them to successors. The RQI of each node is updated whenever it receives or relays broadcast packet, and the node having the higher RQI is selected as a relay node in a distributed and run-time manner. Thus, the proposed algorithm not only removes the overhead for obtaining prior knowledge to select relay nodes, but also provides the adaptability to the dynamic topology changes. The network simulation and experimental results prove that the proposed algorithm provides efficient and reliable content distribution to all members in a smart class as well adaptability against network dynamics.

Multiple wireless devices are being widely deployed in Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) services on the road to establish end-to-end connection between vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) networks. Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) play an important role in supporting V2V and V2I communications (also called V2X communications) in a variety of urban environments with distinct topological characteristics. In fact, obstacles such as big buildings, moving vehicles, trees, advertisement boards, traffic lights, etc. may block the radio signals in V2X communications. Their impact has been neglected in VANET research. In this paper, we present a realistic and efficient radio propagation model to handle different sizes of static and moving obstacles for V2X communications. In the proposed model, buildings and large moving vehicles are modeled as static and moving obstacles, and taken into account their impact on the packet reception rate, Line-of-sight (LOS) obstruction, and received signal power. We use unsymmetrical city map which has many dead-end roads and open faces. Each dead-end road and open faces are joined to the nearest edge making a polygon to model realistic obstacles. The simulation results of proposed model demonstrates better performance compared to some existing models, that shows proposed model can reflect more realistic simulation environments.

In vehicle ad-hoc network (VANET) environments, traffic related information such as accident information, emergency information and real time traffic condition have to be delivered to on-board-unit (OBU) or/and road-side-equipment (RSE) for preventing traffic accidents in advance. In this paper, we introduce a Multi-Channel MAC (MCM) since the existing single channel operation may cause packet transmission delay and unexpected communication failure. To offer a seamless safety message transmission during the various services, it is necessary to manage the MAC scheduler in wireless access in vehicular environments (WAVE) systems. The MCM consists of MAC softwares and MAC hardwares where the former and the later ones are implemented with real time operation system based C language and FPGA module with VHDL language, respectively. The performance and QoS are verified by practical measurements and compared with the scheme using single channel operation.
MANET has many security vulnerabilities because it consists of only mobile nodes using wireless. In particular, it is a very important factor determining network performance that excludes the participation of malicious nodes through accurate reliability measurements and authentication of nodes participating in the network. In this paper, we proposed a technique applied with blockchain technology in order to prevent forgery of authentication information for nodes participating in the network. And, an area-based hierarchical structure was applied to increase the efficiency of authentication for nodes and apply the optimal technique of block generation and exchange protocol. In addition, four data payloads were added to the block header in order to add authentication information for nodes in block. To improve the reliability by applying the blockchain technique to the hop-by-hop data transfer method between mobile nodes, blockchain exchange protocol through transaction creation, block packaging and verification processes were implemented. We performed the comparative experiment with the existing methods to evaluate the performance of the proposed method and confirmed the excellent performance by the experiment results.

To find a location, GPS has been wildly used. But, it is hard to use in indoor because of very weak signal level. To meet indoor requirements, there have been many studies applying wireless communication networks such as WLAN, UWB and ZigBee. Among these, ZigBee is widely adopted in many WSN applications because it has an advantage of low-power and low-cost. In ZigBee, the RSSI is used as range measurement for ad-hoc network. The RSSI are converted to ranges using the signal attenuation model and these ranges become inputs of positioning methods. The obtained position with RSSI has large error because of its poor accuracy. To overcome this problem, ultrasonic sensors are added in many researches. By measuring the arrival time difference of ZigBee and ultrasound as a range measurement, the precise position can be found. However, there are still many problems: scheduling of beacons to transmit signals in a correct order, addition and synchronization of beacons and low-rate positioning rate. At this paper, an efficient method to solve these problems is proposed. In the proposed method, a node transmits ZigBee and ultrasound signal simultaneously. And beacons find the range with the received signals and send it back to a node with ZigBee. The position is computed in a node with the received ranges. In addition, a new positioning algorithm to solve the risk of the divergence in the linearization method and the singularity problem in the Savarese method is presented. Both static and dynamic experimental results show 0.02m RMS errors with high output rate.

One fundamental issue in ad hoc networks is the alternative node election problem, which reflects how well a sensor network is monitored or tracked by sensors. In this paper, we proposed EEAP(Energy-Efficient Alternative Paths). This is a method of selecting an alternative node for path routing management. When some node disconnection on the path routing, using pre-selected backup node provides immediately recover the path recovery. When selecting an alternative node of Step-Parents head node on the path management, the node's energy level and distance information are cared in context-awareness. This is not only increased the system's capacity cost effectively, but also reduce transmission power entire nodes consume energy. As a result, each node could efficiently management and improves the life time for mobile host and extends system coverage.
