Current Status and Future Strategies to Treat Spinal Cord Injury with Adult Stem Cells

  • Spinal cord injury (SCI) is one of the most devastating conditions and many SCI patients suffer neurological sequelae. Stem cell therapies are expected to be beneficial for many patients with central nervous system injuries, including SCI. Adult stem cells (ASCs) are not associated with the risks which embryonic stem cells have such as malignant transformation, or ethical problems, and can be obtained relatively easily. Consequently, many researchers are currently studying the effects of ASCs in clinical trials. The environment of transplanted cells applied in the injured spinal cord differs between the phases of SCI; therefore, many researchers have investigated these phases to determine the optimal time window for stem cell therapy in animals. In addition, the results of clinical trials should be evaluated according to the phase in which stem cells are transplanted. In general, the subacute phase is considered to be optimal for stem cell transplantation. Among various candidates of transplantable ASCs, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are most widely studied due to their clinical safety. MSCs are also less immunogenic than neural stem/progenitor cells and consequently immunosuppressants are rarely required. Attempts have been made to enhance the effects of stem cells using scaffolds, trophic factors, cytokines, and other drugs in animal and/or human clinical studies. Over the past decade, several clinical trials have suggested that transplantation of MSCs into the injured spinal cord elicits therapeutic effects on SCI and is safe; however, the clinical effects are limited at present. Therefore, new therapeutic agents, such as genetically enhanced stem cells which effectively secrete neurotrophic factors or cytokines, must be developed based on the safety of pure MSCs.

A study on Developing and Testing the effects of an Educational Program on Communication Skills for Military Counselors (직업군인 상담자를 위한 대화기술 교육프로그램 개발 및 효과)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop an educational program for improving conversational skills in military counselors and prove its effects. For statistical analysis, t test to find out homogeneity between the experimental and control group and to find out the differences of two groups, and an evaluation before and after the program to verify the therapeutic effects of the program were each proved by SPSS 15.0 for Windows. The followings are the list of the results. First of all, the program was effective in improving military counseling communication skills. Secondly, it was proved to be effective in improving self-effectiveness in counselors. Thirdly, the program was effective in improving interpersonal communication skills. Fourthly, the program revealed its therapeutic effects. Therefore, it is concluded that the program would help greatly in military counseling and living.

The Mediating Effects of Self-esteem on the Relationship between Economic Level and Teaching Efficacy : Focused on Early Childhood Preservice Teacher (경제적 수준과 교수효능감의 관계에서 자아존중감의 매개효과: 예비유아교사를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation on the relationship between economic level, self-esteem and teaching efficacy first, and then to investigate the mediating effects of self-esteem on the relationship between economic level and teaching efficacy. The subjects of this study were 457 students who attend two collages in Incheon and all of them were majoring in early childhood education. The collected data were analyzed through SPSS Window program. Correlation analysis and Multiple regression analysis were conducted. Results showed the there were correlation among economic level, self-esteem and teaching efficacy. Also there were mediating effects of self-esteem on the relationship between economic level and personal teaching efficacy. As a whole the result of this study showed the teaching efficacy of early childhood preservice teacher were more influenced by self-esteem than by economic level. The implication of the result were discussed with the necessity of curriculum development to improve the student's self-esteem.

Development and Effects of an Educational Program for Caregivers on Hygienic Care for Diapers (요양보호사의 기저귀위생간호 교육프로그램 개발 및 효과)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a diaper hygienic care education program for caregivers and to investigate the effects of the diaper hygienic care knowledge and performance ability on diaper hygienic care. A quasi-experimental research with nonequivalent control group pretest-post test design was conducted. The subjects for the study 50 caregivers working in long-term care facilities in Y-gun, Chungcheongnam-do were selected from the 25 experimental group and the 25 control group. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS Window 22 version. diaper hygienic care education program consisted of 4 sessions in total. According to results of the education program, the diaper hygienic care knowledge increased after the post-test($M{\pm}SD=4.88{\pm}0.23$) compared to the pre-test score($M{\pm}SD=4.64{\pm}0.23$), but not be statistically significant between the two groups(t = 1.253, p = .216). The performance ability of diaper hygienic care was significantly increased ($M{\pm}SD=2.89{\pm}0.15$) compared to the pre - score($M{\pm}SD=1.86{\pm}0.18$) and there was a statistically significant difference(t = 12.694, p =. 001). Thus, the developed diaper hygienic care education program is expected to contribute to improve nursing hygienic care ability of nursing caregivers.

The Immediately Effects of PNF Combined Pattern Movement on Balance, Proprioception and Flexibility Using 3D Newton Box (3D Newton Box를 이용한 PNF 통합패턴운동이 균형, 고유감각, 유연성에 미치는 즉각적 효과)

  • This study was conducted on 20 healthy adults in their 20s to identity the immediate effects of balance, proprioception and flexibility after conducting the PNF combined patterns using 3D Newton box. The data collected in this study were analyzed using the SPSS Window 19.0 statistical program, and the general characteristics of the subjects were calculated by calculating the mean and standard deviation using the technical statistics, and the differences before and after in-group balance, proprioception and flexibility were analyzed by the paired t-test. The balance, proprioception and flexibility of the subjects were measured using Y-balance, one-leg standing, and finger bottom contact. The exercise was applied with an combined pattern of PNF in the 3D Newton box. After exercise, balance, proprioception and flexibility all increased significantly. The results show that combined pattern of PNF using the 3D Newton box immediately works for the balance, proprioception and flexibility of adults in their 20s. Therefore, it is considered to be an exercise that can be actively utilized for adults or patients at high risk of damage due to reduced balance, proprioception and flexibility.

A Study on the Surface and Antibacterial Properties for M(Cd, Cu)-Activated Carbon (M(Cd, Cu)-활성탄의 표면 특성과 항균성에 관한 연구)

  • The studies on the adsorption properties and the antibacterial effects of the Cd and Cu-treated activated carbon were carried out. From the adsorption studies on the series of these metal-treated activated carbons, typical Type-I isotherm was observed. The surface areas of the treated carbon obtained from BET equation were in the range of $1101-1418m^2/g$ for Cd-AC and of $1084-1361m^2/g$ for Cu-AC. Using ${\alpha}_s$-plot, the micropore volumes and pore size distribution were obtained. From the SEM study, it is also observed that many of micropores in activated carbon are blocked by window blocking effect of metals after the impregnation. Finally, antibacterial effects of M-activated carbon against Escherichia coli was discussed. From the study, the area of antibacterial activity becomes larger with the increase of the amount of metal treated.

Effects of self-management on psychological happiness in throwers (투척선수들의 자기관리가 심리적 행복감에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of field athletes' self-management on their psychological happiness. The subjects of the study were 184 athletes (male=82, female=102) who participated in the 91th National Athletes Meeting. All statistical analyses and description methods were computed by SPSS window 18.0. The discriminant analysis was used to find effects of self-management on their psychological happiness, ANOVA and Multiple regression. The results of this study were as followings: Frist, there was not significant difference to The Relationship between social-demographical variables and self-management, their psychological happiness. Second, self-management had a significant effect on psychological happiness. Based on the results, Field athletes's self-management has a positive effect on their psychological happiness.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between self-management, dance activity satisfaction and dance performance confidence in university dance students. The subject was a population of 350 university dance students during the period of time November 5, 2012 to December 7, 2012. The data on 322 students were used for actual analyses and data were processed with SPSS 18.0 for Window. The results of the analysis were as follows: First, self-management had positive effects on dance activity satisfaction. Second, dance activity satisfaction had positive effects on dance performance confidence. Third, self-management had positive effects on dance performance confidence.

Effects of incubation temperature on the embryonic viability and hatching time in Russian sturgeon (Acipenser gueldenstaedtii)

  • Background: Russian sturgeon (Acipenser gueldenstaedtii) is an emerging candidate species in the Korean aquaculture domain owing to its highly valued caviar. Although the embryonic development of this species was previously described, the complete image data on the morphological differentiation of developing embryos have not been yet fully available. Further, with the viewpoint of larval production in hatchery, the effects of temperature on embryonic viability and the temporal window of hatching event have not been extensively studied. Hence, the objective of this study was to provide a complete set of photographic image data on the embryogenesis and also to examine the effects of incubation temperatures on embryonic viability and hatching event in farm-bred Russian sturgeon. Results: Typical characteristics of embryonic development including uneven, holoblastic cleavages with unequal blastomeres, followed by the formation of germ layer, neurulation, and organogenesis until hatching, were documented. Under different temperature conditions (12, 16, or $20^{\circ}C$), viability of embryos incubated at $12^{\circ}C$ was significantly lower as relative to those of 16 and $20^{\circ}C$ incubated embryos. Hatchability of embryos was higher, and the timing of hatching event was more synchronized at $20^{\circ}C$ than at 12 and $16^{\circ}C$. Conclusion: Data from this study suggest that the incubation of Russian sturgeon embryos at $20^{\circ}C$ would be desirable in the hatchery practice with respect to the good hatchability of embryos and the synchronization of hatching events. Additionally, the updated image data for complete embryonic development could be a useful reference guide for not only developmental researches but also artificial propagation of Russian sturgeon in farms.

  • Generally, a safety estimation based on the buckling strength is carried out to evaluate the strength of plate members in the design process of ship hull structures and more accurate and efficient tool for the buckling strength estimation of enormous plate members of ship structure is naturally demended for saving design process. While, in the reason that the design codes of classification societies do not consider the various effects or include some effects roughly, considerate safe side results are suggested occasionally. In this study, advanced buckling strength estimation system prepared various classification buckling evaluation codes and new evaluation code considering the effects of in-plane tension, plate boundary condition, lateral load & residual stress is developed using the window management system of engineering workstation. Additionally maximum deflection estimation formula is equipped for the increase of fabrication reliability of thin plate ship structure. From this evaluation system, more reliable buckling safety of plate panel will be guaranteed in the ship hull design stage. In order to expand the use of this system pc version system will be developed sooner or later.
