  • Filament wound pressure vessels have been studied for the efficient design tool to consider the variation of fiber angles through-the thickness direction. Filament winding patterns were simulated from semi-geodesic fiber path equation to calculate fiber path on arbitrary surface. Finite element analyses were performed considering fiber angle variation in longitudinal and thickness directions by ABAQUS. For the finite element modeling of the pressure tank, the 3-dimensional layered solid element was utilized. From the stress results of pressure tanks, maximum stress criterion in transverse direction was applied to modify material properties for failed region. In the end of each load increment, resultant layer stresses were compared with a failure criterion and properties were reduced to 1/10 for a failed layer. Results of progressive failure analysis were compared with two experimental data.

  • The fiber orientation in FRP has a great effect on the strength of FRP because the strength of FRP mainly depends on the strength of fiber. Unidirectional FRP made by pultrusion method has comparatively lower compressive strength than tensile strength. Compressive strength of unidirectional FRP may be increased by filament winding layer which has tensile stress when compressive stress was loaded. In this study, compressive strength and stresses of FRP rods were simulated according to the winding orientation of glass fiber. Inner part of FRP was made unidirectionally by pultrusion method and outer part of FRP was made by filament winding method. Simulated value and real evaluated compressive strength were compared to investigate stresses which is prominent to the fracture of FRP. The shear stresses had a great effect on the strength of FRP although the stress of parallel direction of FRP was much higher.

  • FRP has been used very much as high strength and electrical insulation materials. The fiber contributes the high strength and modulus to the composite. The main roles of the matrix in composite materials like FRP are to transmit and distribute stresses among the individual fibers. The fiber orientation in FRP has a great effect on the strength of FRP because the strength of FRP mainly depends on the strength of fiber. In this study, compressive and bending stresses of FRP rods were simulated and measured according to the winding orientation of glass fiber. Inner part of FRP was made unidirectionally by pultrusion method and outer part of FRP was made by filament winding method to give fiber orientation to the FRP. The shear stresses had great effect on the strength of FRP although the stress of parallel direction of FRP was much higher. The tendency of compressive and bending strengths with glass fiber orientation was different each other.

  • Superconducting fault current(SFCLs) are expected to improve not only reliability but also stability of real power systems. The analysis on the single line-to-ground fault current of the integrated three phase flux-lock type SFCL, which consists of three flux-lock reactor wound on an iron core in each single phase and three YBCO thin films, was investigated in current limiting operating characteristics. We compared additive polarity winding with the subtractive one in the flux lock reactor. Its turns ratio each phase between the primary and the secondary coils is 63:42. When a single line-to-ground fault occurred in any phase, the peak value of line current in the fault phase of the additive polarity winding increased up to 31.44[A] during first-half cycle. On the other hand, the peak value in the subtractive polarity winding increased up to 81.77[A] under the same conditions. This is because the current flow between the primary and the secondary windings becomes to be additive or subtractive in each winding direction. We confirmed that the current limiting behavior in the additive polarity winding was more effective for a single-line-to ground fault.

  • This paper presents a strength safety evaluation of composite pressure container for hydrogen fuel tanks with a storage capacity of 104 liter and 70MPa pressure. The carbon fiber composite container is manufactured by an aluminum liner of Al6061-T6 and composite multi-layers of hoop winding layer in circumferential direction, $12^{\circ}C$ inclined winding layer and $70^{\circ}C$winding layer in helical direction respectively. The FEM results on the strength safety of composite fuel tanks were evaluated with a criterion of design safety of US DOT-CFFC and KS B ISO 11119-2 codes. The FEM computed results indicate that the proposed design model of 104 liter composite container is safe based on two strength safety codes. But, the computed results of carbon fiber fuel tanks based on US DOT-CFFC code is safer compared with that of KS B ISO 11119-2. Thus the hydrogen gas pressure container of 70MPa may be evaluated and designed by US DOT-CFFC code for more strength safety.

  • In this paper, the fault current limiting characteristics for the superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) using magnetic coupling between two coils were investigated. The SFCL consists of a high-$T_c$ superconducting(HTSC) element and two coils. This SFCL has different characteristics that depend on the connection form, the winding direction and the inductance ratio of two coils. The impedance and the operational current of the SFCL can be adjusted higher or lower than the resistance and the critical current of HTSC element. Therefore, the SFCL can change the amplitude of the limited fault current. To confirm it, the HTSC element was modeled and the fault current limiting characteristics of the SFCL were analysed through computer simulation. It was obtained from the analysis that the connection form and the winding direction of two coils of the SFCL were the important design parameters.

  • When the current of the superconducting element exceeds its critical current by the fault occurrence, the quench of the high-$T_C$ superconducting fault current limiter (HTSC) comprising the flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) occurs. Simultaneously, the magnetic flux in the iron core induces the voltage in each coil, which contributes to limit the fault current. In this paper, the fault current limiting characteristics of the flux-lock type SFCL as well as the load voltage sag suppressing characteristics according to the flux-lock type SFCL's winding direction were investigated. To confirm the fault current limiting and the voltage sag suppressing characteristics of the this SFCL, the short-circuit tests for the simulated power system with the flux-lock type SFCL were carried out. The flux-lock type SFCL designed with the additive polarity winding was shown to perform more effective fault current limiting and load voltage sag suppressing operations through the fast quench occurrence right after the fault occurs and the fast recovery operation after the fault removes than the flux-lock type SFCL designed with the subtractive polarity winding.

  • Filament wound structures such as pressure tanks, pipes and motor cases of rockets are widely used in the aerospace application. The determination of a proper winding angle and thickness is very important to decrease manufacturing difficulties and to increase structural efficiency. In this study, possible winding angles considering the slippage between a fiber and a mandrel surface are calculated using the semi-geodesic path equation. In addition, finite element analysis using ABAcUS are performed to predict the behavior of filament wound structures considering continuous change of winding angle along the dome part. The water-pressuring tests of 3rd stage motor case are performed to verify the analysis procedure. The strain gages are attached on the surface in the fiber direction. Progressive failure analysis is performed to predict the burst pressure and the weakest region of the motor case. The effect of reinforcement is also studied to increase its performance.

  • The demand for electric power keeps growing, and tends to be more effective. Polymer insulators have been manufactured for almost twenty years and the excellent insulation performance of polymer insulators is attractive. Polymeric materials are now widely used as a replacement for inorganic materials such as porcelain or glass for the outdoor insulation of high voltage insulation. GFRP has been used widely as a core materials for polymer insulators. This paper reports the mechanical properties of GFRP for insulators. The bending strength was simulated and evaluated according to the winding angle. The fiber orientation in GFRP has a great effect on the strength of GFRP because the strength of GFRP mainly depends on the strength of fiber. Results of simulated and evaluated strength of GFRP were compared each other. The simulated strength of GFRP rod was different from the evaluated strength. It was caused that the shear stress had a great effect on the strength of GFRP although the stress of parallel direction of GFRP was much higher.

  • In this paper, SFCL using two magnetically coupled coils was modeled and simulated by PSCAD/EMTDC. The simulation was shown that fault current could be adjusted with the inductance ratio and the winding direction of two coils. The limited fault current in case of the additive polarity winding was lower than that of the subtractive polarity. The analysis results were compared with the calculated ones, and both the results agreed.
