  • Offshore wind farm is being increased since there are much trouble to develop onshore wind farm. But in the offshore, wind turbine wake does not dissipate less than onshore wind turbine because of low turbulence level. Thus this remained wake interacted to other wind turbine. This interaction reduces energy production in wind farm and have a bad influence on fatigue load of wind turbine. In this research, CFD model was constructed to analyze wake effect in offshore wind farm. A method that wind turbine rotor region was modelled in porous media was devised to reduce computation load and validated by comparison with Horns Rev measurement. Then wake interaction between two wind turbine was analyzed by devised porous model.

  • The wake generated by a wind turbine has an effect on performance of a downstream wind turbine as well as mechanical loads. This paper investigated characteristics of fatigue load at the blade root due to the wake effects and quantitatively analyzed its effects at operating condition of a 5MW tripod offshore wind turbine using Bladed 4.1 software. The wake effects was studied the way the wake's center position move from the rotor center to the blade tip to the far-away position where the wake doesn't affect the wind turbine. When wake's center was located on the blade tip or the rotor center, damage equivalent fatigue load was higher than other positions. It was up to 10~14% compared to those of non-wake case. Results of this study would be helpful to design wind turbines and wind farms to have lifetimes more than 20 years of the wind turbine.

  • The effect of wake on the performance and load of a downstream wind turbine on a floating platform is investigated with a computer simulation in this study. The floating platform consists of a square platform having a dimension of $200m{\times}200m$ with four 2 MW wind turbines installed. For the simulation, only two wind turbines in series with the wind direction were considered and the floating platform was assumed to be stationary due to its large size. Also, a commercial program based on multi-body dynamics and eddy viscosity wake model was used. It was found from simulation that the power from the downstream wind turbine could be reduced by more than 50% of the power from the upstream wind turbine. However, due to the increase in the turbulence intensity, the power is greater but more fluctuating than the power produced by a wind turbine experiencing the same wind speed without wake. Also, it was found that the load of the down stream wind turbine be comes lower than the load of the upstream wind turbine but higher than the load of a wind turbine experiencing the same wind speed without wake.

  • Although there are many activities on the construction of wind farm to produce amount of power from the wind, in practice power productions are not as much as its expected capabilities. This is because a lack of both the prediction of wind resources and the aerodynamic analysis on turbines with far wake effects. In far wake region, there are velocity deficits and increases of the turbulence intensity which lead to the power losses of the next turbine and the increases of dynamic loadings which could reduce system's life. The analysis on power losses and the increases of fatigue loadings in the wind farm is needed to prevent these unwanted consequences. Therefore, in this study velocity deficits have been predicted and aerodynamic analysis on turbines in the far wake is carried out from these velocity profiles. Ainslie's eddy viscosity wake model is adopted to determine a wake velocity and aerodynamic analysis on wind turbines is predicted by the numerical methods such as blade element momentum theory(BEMT) and vortex lattice method(VLM). The results show that velocity recovery is more rapid in the wake region with higher turbulence intensity. Since the velocity deficit is larger when the turbine has higher thrust coefficient, there is a huge aerodynamic power loss at the downstream turbine.

  • A critical issue in the field of the rotor aerodynamics is the treatment of the wake. The wake is of primary importance in determining overall aerodynamic behavior, especially, a wind turbine blade includes the unsteady airloads problem. In this study, the wake generated by blades are depicted by a free wake model to analyse unsteady loading on blade and a new free wake model named Finite Vortex Element(FVE hereafter) is devised in order to include a wake-tower interaction. In this new free wake model, blade-wake-tower interaction is described by cutting a vortex filament when the filament collides with a tower. This FVE model is compared with a conventional free wake model and verified by a comparison with NRELand SNU wind tunnel model. A comparison with NREL and SNU data shows validity and effectiveness of devised FVE free wake model and an efficient.

  • To generate electricity from wind energy, wind turbine generally has a rotor blade. Since this rotor blade is a kind of the rotating machinery, the wake from the rotor is very Important role in the side of the aerodynamic performances. Thus the study about wake is essential to analyze wind turbine aerodynamics. In this study wake characteristics are analyzed by hot-wire probe in the K.A.F.A(Korea Air Force Academy) wind tunnel. It is possible to analyze the wake characteristics by hot-wire probe from acquiring the velocity fluctuations at given positions in the flow. This velocity data are arranged by trigger signal at same azimuth of the blade in periodic manner of the rotor blade. From this various wake characteristics are found : radial and axial position of the tip vortex, vortex core characteristics in the flow etc.

  • The treatment of rotor wake has been a critical issue in the field of the rotor aerodynamics. This paper presents a new free wake model for the unsteady analysis for a wind turbine. A blade-wake-tower interaction is major source of unsteady aerodynamic loading and noise on the wind turbine. However, this interaction can not be considered in conventional free wake model. Thus, the free wake model named Finite Vortex Element (FVE hereafter) was devised in order to consider the interaction effects. In this new free wake model, the wake-tower interaction was described by dividing one vortex filament into two vortex filaments, when the vortex filament collided with a tower. Each divided vortex filaments were remodeled to make vortex ring and horseshoe vortex to satisfy Kelvin's circulation theorem and Helmholtz's vortex theorem. This model was then used to predict aerodynamic load and wake geometry for the horizontal axis wind turbine. The results of the FVE model were compared with those of the conventional free wake model and the experimental results of SNU wind tunnel test and NREL wind tunnel test under various inflow velocity and yaw condition. The result of the FVE model showed better correlation with experimental data. It was certain that the tower interaction has a strong effect on the unsteady aerodynamic load of blades. Thus, the tower interaction needs to be taken into account for the unsteady load prediction. As a result, this research shows a potential of the FVE for an efficient and versatile numerical tool for unsteady loading analysis of a wind turbine.

  • A comparison study between computational-fluid-dynamics simulation and wind tunnel test for a megawatt-class wind turbine is conducted. For the study, flow-field in wake, basic aerodynamic performance, and effect of the yaw error for a 1/86 scaled-down model of the NREL offshore 5 MW wind turbine are numerically calculated using commercial software "FloEFD" with $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. The computed results are compared to the wind tunnel test performed by the constant-velocity mode for the model. It is shown that discrepancy are found between the two results at lower tip-speed ratio and higher yaw angle, however, the velocity-defection distribution in the wake, the torque coefficient at moderated and high tip-speed ratios are in good agreement with the wind tunnel test.

  • In this paper, wind tunnel tests of a scaled wind turbine have been performed to investigate the effects of turbulent intensity of oncoming flow on turbine wake field. The scaled turbine model was carefully designed to satisfy the similarity conditions. The wind velocities and turbulent intensities were measured using hotwire anemometer in order to compare with existing wake model. It was found from the tests that the existing wake models well fit with test results at turbulent flow rather than at uniform flow. Finally modified wake model has been proposed based on the measured data.
