  • The need for special or high-rise building has made it necessary to fully understand the effects of wind forces on that. The objective of this study is to provide the information on the evalution of Wind-Induced Loads for the Inchon International Airport Traffic Control Tower Based on the results of this study, it can be found that the maximum base overturning moment getting by the dynamic model is higher than the static test one. And also, the assessment of serviceability comparing by the ISO-6897 is not appropriate. It is recommended that the reducing system of the wind-induced viberating is needed in this structure.

  • In this paper, the purpose is a study on structural analysis for offshore wind turbine using commercial code. Because offshore wind turbine is subjected to great wind and wave force, it is necessary to analyse the dynamics and minimize the response of wind turbine. The offshore wind turbine tower is modelled as a single degree of freedom and multi degree of freedom structure. It is assumed that the blades, nacelle are composed of concentrated masses.

  • In this study, seismic response analyses of a MW class wind-turbine have been conducted considering applied wind-loads using advanced computational method based on CFD and FEM. Typical lateral and vertical acceleration levels induced by earthquake is also considered herein. Practical numerical method for seismic response analysis of wind-turbine tower models are presented in the time-domain and the effects of wind load and seismic excitation for responses are compared to each other. It is importantly shown that possible earthquake effect during typical operating conditions should be taken into account in the design of huge wind-turbine tower systems because of its enormous inertia characteristics for induced maximum stress level.

  • In this study, seismic responses of the offshore wind tower supported by bucket foundation are analyzed in consideration of soil-structure interaction. The program SASSI is used as analyzing tool and an artificial seismic input for soft soil is used as input motion. The H/R ratio of bucket, the stiffness of bucket foundation and the soil stiffness are considered as parameters and its effects are estimated. The responses of structure are obtained at the base and the nacell. As results, the effects of H/R ratio, the stiffness of bucket and the stiffness of site are generally denoted different response tendency at the base and the nacell. However, these whole responses of the base and the nacell are much lager than that of rock site. Therefore, the consideration of this phemomia affect to the response of offshore wind tower with bucket foundation largely.

  • A damage estimation method of wind turbine tower using natural frequency and mode shape is presented for effective condition monitoring. Dynamic analysis for a wind turbine was carried out to obtain the response of tower from which modal properties were identified. A neural network was learned based on training patterns generated by the changes of natural frequency and mode shape due to various damages. The changes of modal property were calculated using a program for modal parameter estimation. Damage locations and severities could be successfully estimated for 10 damage cases including multi-damage cases using the trained neural network. The damage severities for very small damages generally tends to be slightly under-estimated however, the identified damage locations agreed reasonably well with the accurate locations. Enhancement of the estimation result for very small damage and verification of the proposed method through experiment will be carried out by further study.

  • This paper presents the design factor of an overhead transmission tower structure in order to reduce the tower weight. The behaviour of transmission tower structures are affected by the horizontal angle of the tower structure, the equivalent wind pressure group, the slope of the main post of the tower, the separation of the internode and the use of high-strength materials in their construction. Tower weight can be reduced by approximately 30% reduce weight by means of optimal design based on a consideration of all the above factors. In addition, the design of the foundation of the tower with the shear key installation to increase horizontal support together with a modified angle of inclination to the ground can reduce by about 37% the amount of concrete used during construction. The area of ground disturbed by the construction of the tower foundation can thus be reduced by approximately 33%. Therefore it is possible to build an environmently-friendly T/L tower with the mechanical properties of existing towers.

  • We investigated wind environment impact of the building of the KIER Waljeong Station in Jeju Island. From the preliminary qualitative analysis using the VirtualWind simulator, we confirmed that an influence caused by the 11m-tall 30m-aparted building on the 1.5MW wind turbine at Waljeong Station in not negligible. As a next step, VirtualWind simulation and the 100m met-tower measurement at the Waljeong Station is going to be compared to identify a building effect quantitatively.

  • Global warming and the depletion of fossil fuels have been caused by decades of reckless development. Wind energy is one form of renewable energy and is considered a future energy source. The wind tower is designed with a fundamental frequency in the soft-stiff design between the 1P and 3P range to avoid resonance. Usually, to perform natural frequency analysis of a wind tower, the boundary condition is set to the Fixed-End, and soil-pile interaction is not considered. In this study, consideration of the effect of soil-pile interaction on the wind tower was included and the difference in the natural frequency was studied. The fixed boundary condition was not affected by the soil condition and depth of the pile and the coupled spring boundary condition was unaffected by the depth of pile but affected by the depth of the pile, and the Winkler spring boundary condition is affected by both the soil condition and the depth of the pile. Therefore, the coupled spring boundary condition should be used in shallow depth soil conditions because the soil condition does not take the shallow depth soil into consideration.

  • The more accurate numerical analysis is needed, The more important to arrange nodes and elements properly on the structures wanted to be analyzed. In this study, automatic mesh generation method is developed for triangular mesh modeling in wind tower and substructure formed in circular sections especially, which have structural and economical benefits in shallow water area. It can consider variety conditions by inputting the detail data such as height and types. Also, this study includes the comparison and verification with the mesh generation by Delaunay triangular technique on 3 dimensional space and the examples of mesh generation for proposed tower and substructure. The result of this study will be widely applied to analyze the existing and proposed models for wind turbines.

  • Thunderstorm downbursts are responsible for numerous structural failures around the world. The wind characteristics in thunderstorm downbursts containing vortex rings differ with those in 'traditional' boundary layer winds (BLW). This paper initially performs an unsteady-state simulation of the flow structure in a downburst (modelled as a impinging jet with its diameter being $D_{jet}$) using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method, and then analyses the pressure distribution on a solar updraft tower (SUT) in the downburst. The pressure field shows agreement with other previous studies. An additional pair of low-pressure region and high-pressure region is observed due to a second vortex ring, besides a foregoing pair caused by a primary vortex ring. The evolutions of pressure coefficients at five orientations of two representative heights of the SUT in the downburst with time are investigated. Results show that pressure distribution changes over a wide range when the vortices are close to the SUT. Furthermore, the fluctuations of external static pressure distribution for the SUT case 1 (i.e., radial distance from a location to jet center x=$D_{jet}$) with height are more intense due to the down striking of the vortex flow compared to those for the SUT case 2 (x=$2D_{jet}$). The static wind loads at heights z/H higher than 0.3 will be negligible when the vortex ring is far away from the SUT. The inverted wind load cases will occur when vortex is passing through the SUT except on the side faces. This can induce complex dynamic response of the SUT.
