Subgrade differential settlement of high-speed railways was a pivotal issue that could increase the risk of trains operation. The risk will be further increased when trains in the subsidence zone are affected by crosswinds. In this paper, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model and finite element (FE) model were established, and the data transmission interface of the two models was established by fluid-solid interaction (FSI) method to form a systematic crosswind-train-track-subgrade dynamic model. The risk of high-speed train encountering crosswind in settlement area was analyzed. The results showed that the aerodynamic force of the trains increased significantly with the increase in crosswind speed. The aerodynamic force of the trains could reach 125.14 kN, significantly increasing the risk of derailment and overturning. Considering the influence of crosswind, the risk of train operation could be greatly increased. The safety indices and the wheel-rail force both increased with the increase of the wind speed. For the high-speed train running at 350 km/h, the warning value of wind speed was 10.2 m /s under the condition of subgrade settlement with wavelength of 20 m and amplitude of 15 mm.

A Sub-kWe small-scale experimental test loop was manufactured to investigate characteristics of the supercritical carbon dioxide power cycle. A high-speed turbo-generator was also designed and manufactured. The designed rotational speed of this turbo-generator was 200,000 rpm. Because of the low expansion ratio through the turbine and low mass flowrate, the rotational speed of the turbo-generator was high. Therefore, it was difficult to select the rotating parts and design the turbine wheel, axial force balance and rotor dynamics in the lab-scale experimental test loop. Using only one channel of the nozzle, the partial admission method was adapted to reduce the rotational speed of the rotor. This was the world's first approach to the supercritical carbon dioxide turbo-generator. A cold-run test using nitrogen gas under an atmospheric condition was conducted to observe the effect of the partial admission nozzle on the rotor dynamics. The vibration level of the rotor was obtained using a gap sensor, and the results showed that the effect of the partial admission nozzle on the rotor dynamics was allowable.

In recently, the demand of cover-glass is increased because smart phone, tablet pc, and electrical device has become widely used. The display of mobile device is enlarged, so it is necessary to have a high strength against the external force such as contact or falling. In fabrication process of cover-glass, a grinding process is very important process to obtain high strength of glass. Conventional grinding process using a grinding wheel is caused such as a scratch, chipping, notch, and micro-crack on a surface. In this paper, polishing system using a abrasive film was developed for a grinding of mobile cover-glass. To evaluate structural stability of the designed system, finite element model of the polishing system is generated, and multi-body dynamic analysis of abrasive film polishing machine is proposed. As a result of the analysis, stress and displacement analysis of abrasive film polishing system are performed, and using laser displacement sensor, structural stability of abrasive film polishing system is confirmed by measuring displacement.

This paper describes the developments to improve the feeling and safety of the remote control system of unmanned vehicles. Generally, in the case of the remote control systems, a joystick-type device or a simple steering-wheel are used. There are many cases, in which there are operations without considering the feedback to users and driving feel. Recently, as the application area of the unmanned vehicles has been extended, the problems caused by not considering the feedback are emphasized. Therefore, the need for a force feedback-haptic control arises to solve these problems. In this study, the force feedback-haptic control algorithm considering the vehicle parameters is proposed. The vehicle parameters include first the state variables of dynamics, such as the body side-slip angle (${\beta}$) and yawrate (${\gamma}$), and second, the parameters representing the driving situations. Force feedback-haptic control technology consists of the algorithms for general and specific situations, and considers the situation transition process. To verify the algorithms, a simulator was constructed using the vehicle dynamics simulation tool with CAN communication environment. Using the simulator, the feasibility of the algorithms was verified in various scenarios.

In this study, a vehicle dynamic analysis and roller rig test were performed to evaluate the applicability of a suspensionless composite bogie to railway vehicles. A vehicle dynamic analysis was carried out under different rubber bushing stiffness values. The stiffness of the rubber bushing that plays a role in guiding wheel sets was varied in the range of 10-100 MN/m, in 10-MN/m steps. Based on the results, the composite bogie with a rubber bushing stiffness of more than 40 MN/m satisfied the design requirements. In addition, a rubber bushing with a stiffness of 81 MN/m was fabricated, and a roller rig test was performed. Based on the test results, the vehicle equipped with the composite bogie had a critical speed of 363 km/h, which agreed with the simulation result within an error of 10%.

It is essential to perform driving performance tests of military vehicles on rough terrain. A full car test is limited by cost and time constraints, because of which a dynamic analysis via computer simulation is preferred. In this study, a vehicle model is developed using MSC.ADAMS, a commercial multibody analysis program, and compared via experiments. FTire is modeled using the results of a tire performance test to obtain the vertical stiffness. A nonlinear damper is modeled by a characteristic experiment. Leaf springs are modeled with beam force elements and consisted to a vehicle model. The vertical force and acceleration response of the wheel are identified when vehicle is passing over a simple bump as well as a sinusoidal road. The developed vehicle model is verified with the results of a full car test.
Rail-mounted cranes can be easily damaged by a sudden gust of wind while working at a running speed, due to the large mass and high barycenter positions. In current designs, working rail-mounted cranes mainly depend on wheel braking torques to resist large wind load. Regular brakes, however, cannot satisfactorily stop the crane, which induces safety issues of cranes and hence leads to frequent crane accidents, especially in sudden gusts of wind. Therefore, it is necessary and important to study the braking performance of working rail mounted cranes under wind load. In this study, a simplified mechanical model was built to simulate the working rail mounted gantry crane, and dynamic analysis of the model was carried out to deduce braking performance equations that reflect the qualitative relations among braking time, braking distance, wind load, and braking torque. It was shown that, under constant braking torque, there existed inflection points on the curves of braking time and distance versus windforce. Both the braking time and the distance increased sharply when wind load exceeded the inflection point value, referred to as the threshold windforce. The braking performance of a 300 ton shipbuilding gantry crane was modeled and analyzed using multibody dynamics software ADAMS. The simulation results were fitted by quadratic curves to show the changes of braking time and distance versus windforce under various mount of braking torques. The threshold windforce could be obtained theoretically by taking derivative of fitted curves. Based on the fitted functional relationship between threshold windforce and braking torque, theoretical basis are provided to ensure a safe and rational design for crane wind-resistant braking systems.

Torsional vibrations, such as the gear rattle of the manual transmission in vehicle systems, are correlated with the firing stroke from the engine. These vibro-impacts can be examined based upon linear time-invariant analysis. In order to understand the gear dynamics, a specific manual transmission with a front-engine front-wheel drive configuration is investigated. A method to reduce the degrees of freedom is suggested based upon the eigensolutions and frequency response functions, which will lead to the development of an efficient matrix size. The dynamic characteristics of single- and dual-mass flywheels are then compared. The effect of the dual-mass flywheel is investigated based upon the mobility analysis, which will lead to understanding of the concepts for avoiding vibro-impacts. A linear time-invariant system model is examined by employing the effective clutch stiffness from a two-stage clutch damper. Thus, the relationship between the dynamic characteristics and the clutch damper can be predicted by assuming a combination of different stage stiffness levels.
Special track systems used to divert a train to other directions or other tracks are generally called 'railway turnout'. A traditional turnout system consists of steel rails, switches, crossings, steel plates, fasteners, screw spikes, timber bearers, ballast and formation. The wheel rail contact over the crossing transfer zone has a dip-like shape and can often cause detrimental impact loads on the railway track and its components. The large impact also emits disturbing noises (either impact or ground-borne noise) to railway neighbors. In a brown-field railway track where an existing aged infrastructure requires renewal or maintenance, some physical constraints and construction complexities may dominate the choice of track forms or certain components. With the difficulty to seek for high-quality timbers with dimensional stability, a methodology to replace aged timber bearers in harsh dynamic environments is to adopt an alternative material that could mimic responses and characteristics of timber in both static and dynamic loading conditions. A critical review has suggested an application of an alternative material called fibre-reinforced foamed urethane (FFU). The full-scale capacity design makes use of its comparable engineering characteristics to timber, high-impact attenuation, high damping property, and a longer service life. A field trial to investigate in-situ behaviours of a turnout grillage system using an alternative material, 'fibre-reinforced foamed urethane (FFU)' bearers, has been carried out at a complex turnout junction under heavy mixed traffics at Hornsby, New South Wales, Australia. The turnout junction was renewed using the FFU bearers altogether with new special track components. Influences of the FFU bearers on track geometry (recorded by track inspection vehicle 'AK Car'), track settlement (based on survey data), track dynamics, and acoustic characteristics have been measured. Operational train pass-by measurements have been analysed to evaluate the effectiveness of the replacement methodology. Comparative studies show that the use of FFU bearers generates higher rail and sleeper accelerations but the damping capacity of the FFU help suppress vibration transferring onto other track components. The survey data analysis suggests a small vertical settlement and negligible lateral movement of the turnout system. The static and dynamic behaviours of FFU bearers appear to equate that of natural timber but its service life is superior.
High-speed rail (HSR) has been in operation and development in many countries worldwide. The explosive growth of HSR has posed great challenges for operation safety and ride comfort. Among various technological demands on high-speed trains, vibration is an inevitable problem caused by rail/wheel imperfections, vehicle dynamics, and aerodynamic instability. Ride comfort is a key factor in evaluating the operational performance of high-speed trains. In this study, online monitoring data have been acquired from an in-service high-speed train for condition assessment. The measured dynamic response signals at the floor level of a train cabin are processed by the Sperling operator, in which the ride comfort index sequence is used to identify the train's operation condition. In addition, a novel technique that incorporates salient features of Bayesian inference and time series analysis is proposed for outlier detection and change detection. The Bayesian forecasting approach enables the prediction of conditional probabilities. By integrating the Bayesian forecasting approach with time series analysis, one-step forecasting probability density functions (PDFs) can be obtained before proceeding to the next observation. The change detection is conducted by comparing the current model and the alternative model (whose mean value is shifted by a prescribed offset) to determine which one can well fit the actual observation. When the comparison results indicate that the alternative model performs better, then a potential change is detected. If the current observation is a potential outlier or change, Bayes factor and cumulative Bayes factor are derived for further identification. A significant change, if identified, implies that there is a great alteration in the train operation performance due to defects. In this study, two illustrative cases are provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method for condition assessment of high-speed trains.
