  • Parametric studies are executed by numerical method varying then number of strain gauges, rail section and distance of sleeper from which the followings are obtained. Wheel forces or lateral forces are measured by connecting eight strain gauges on rail to single Wheatstone bridge. The method eliminates the influence of interaction and measured stability. Strain gauges are fastened on the neutral axis of the rail so as not to be influenced by sleeper.

  • In the splay manufacturing process, conveyor systems are widely used for conveying panels. In this conveyor, a large number of grounding lines are used in order to prevent a product failure due to static electricity. In many cases, the grounding line is disconnected due to the rotation of the transporting roller or curling, leading to product failure. In order to solve such a problem, there is a growing need for a system capable of detecting disconnection of a ground wire in real time. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a disconnection monitoring system of ESD (Electro-Static Discharge) ground wire caused by friction between the conveyor drive part and the panel. The proposed system is a monitoring system that can detect disconnection and disconnection of ground wire using ATmega 2560 and Wheatstone Bridge circuit. It can detect disconnection of ground wire immediately and can take measures to reduce the defect rate due to static electricity. The system proposed in this paper is expected to be applicable to the production and test equipments of all industries where the ground wire is used.

  • Trusses are found in many common structures such as bridges and buildings. The truss is a fundamental design element in engineering structures and it is important for an engineer to apply the truss design to engineering structures by understanding the mechanics of truss element. In an experimental course, the experiment selves as an example of the usefulness of the Wheatstone bridge in amplifying the output of a transducer. With the apparatus described here, it is possible to obtain experimental measurements of forces in a truss member which agree within errors to predictions from elementary mechanics. The apparatus is inexpensive, easy to operate, and suitable as either a classroom demonstration or student laboratory experiment. This device is a small table-top experiment. The conventional strain measuring device is costly and complicated - it is not simple to understand its structure. Hence, strain gage and the A/D converter are assembled to come up with a load and a strain measuring device. The device was tested for measuring the strain in a loaded specimen and the results were compared to those predicted by theory of mechanics.

  • This study attempted to detect possible collapse and fire accidents in facilities for disaster monitoring of large facilities, and to develop a customized beacon to recognize the internal situation of an IoT-based facility when a disaster occurs. In the case of data measurement using the existing strain gauge sensor, the strain gauge sensor was connected by wire to measure it, but this study changed it to wireless so that the presence and absence of structural deformation can be monitored in real time. In this process, in order to use the Wheatstone bridge, a strain sensor module that can be connected to a customized beacon was manufactured, and a system configuration was conducted to remotely check the measurement data. To verify measurement data, 10 customized beacons and 2 gateways were installed on the 15th floor of the Advanced Institue of Convergence Technology, and as a result of analysis of measurement data, it was confirmed that the strain data values were distributed between 7 and 8.

  • A sensing element for tri-axial force measurement, unit sensor of tactile sensor, was designed and evaluated by using finite element method (ANSYS). The sensor has a maximum force range of ${\pm}10$ N in the x, y, and z direction. Optimal cell structures and piezoresistor positions were determined by the strain distribution obtained from finite element analysis. Finally three Wheatstone birdge circuits were arranged and verified by $F_x$, $F_y$, and $F_z$ loading conditions. In addition, in case of sensing element subjected to thermal loading, the outputs of three bridge circuits were also evaluated.

  • Due to their cost-effectiveness and ease of installation, wireless smart sensors (WSS) have received considerable recent attention for structural health monitoring of civil infrastructure. Though various wireless smart sensor networks (WSSN) have been successfully implemented for full-scale structural health monitoring (SHM) applications, monitoring of low-level ambient strain still remains a challenging problem for WSS due to A/D converter (ADC) resolution, inherent circuit noise, and the need for automatic operation. In this paper, the design and validation of high-precision strain sensor board for the Imote2 WSS platform and its application to SHM of a cable-stayed bridge are presented. By accurate and automated balancing of the Wheatstone bridge, signal amplification of up to 2507-times can be obtained, while keeping signal mean close to the center of the ADC span, which allows utilization of the full span of the ADC. For better applicability to SHM for real-world structures, temperature compensation and shunt calibration are also implemented. Moreover, the sensor board has been designed to accommodate a friction-type magnet strain sensor, in addition to traditional foil-type strain gages, facilitating fast and easy deployment. The wireless strain sensor board performance is verified through both laboratory-scale tests and deployment on a full-scale cable-stayed bridge.

  • Conventionally, to measure derailment coefficient of a railway wheel, strain gauges for lateral force measurement are attached to both side of the wheel. But narrow gap between railway wheel and traction motor makes it difficult to attache the strain gauges at the inner side of wheel. In this study, to overcome the hard accessibility to the strain gauge points by narrow gap, a new Wheatstone bridge connection method is presented by attaching all the strain gauges at the outer side of wheel with a new bridge connection. We evaluate the running safety of railway vehicles in accordance with railway safety regulations. The experimental results obtained shows higher sensitivity than conventional methods and the derailment coefficient measurement procedure becomes simpler.

  • The study in the fild of medical instrument has been out of the interest by any of the life scientist in Korea. Especially, the recent developments in the medical electromics are remarkable one. Authors planned this study to ascertain the possibility of setting up the thermister thermometer with available accessories of demestic prouducts including some specific foreign assembly parts. By proper use of the thermister as one of the wheatstone bridge, we could detect tile resistance variations due to the environmental temperature variace. The intensive care for the bridge circuit and compensation scheme was required. The calibration procedure adopted here makes it possible to read the current as the temperature. The temperature range was determined by the examination and construction of the graph of the resistance-temperature variation. The determination of electric current, available ambient-temperature, the reduction of excessive current and self-heating of the thermister were made. Renovation in response-velocity was under taken too. This electronic thermometer was designed and assembled by the circuitry developed in accordance with the maximum availability of domestic products with some foreign-made parts. The result of our experiment showed very stable function and proved to be the most promissing item in the actual application as long as the thermistor thermister is concerned.

  • This paper describes a design methodology of a tri-axial silicon-based farce sensor with square membrane by using micromachining technology (MEMS). The sensor has a maximum farce range of 5 N and a minimum force range of 0.1N in the three-axis directions. A simple beam theory was adopted to design the shape of the micro-force sensor. Also the optimal positions of piezoresistors were determined by the strain distribution obtained from the commercial finite element analysis program, ANSYS. The Wheatstone bridge circuits were designed to consider the sensitivity of the force sensor and its temperature compensation. Finally the process for microfabrication was designed using micromachining technology.
