  • This study was performed to screen fallow crops during winter period for improvement of soil quality and utilizing as mulching material in watermelon cropping system during winter period. Five fallow crops, mainly, hairy vetch, barley, rye, oat and wheat, were sown in early November. They were mowed for covering the soil surface instead of polyethylene (PE) film before watermelon planting in early April the following year. The highest absorbed nutrients and dry matter yield were found in rye. Bulk density in plots with fallow crop was lower than control plot. There was observed no significant differences among the fallow crops. However, porosity was the lowest in control plot. Soil EC reduced to 12%, 13%, 14%, 16% and 22%, respectively, by cultivation of hairy vetch, oat, wheat, barley and rye. Microbial biomass carbon and dehydrogenase activities were higher in soil treated with gramineous crops, such as barley, rye and oat. The growth of watermelon was more affected by regeneration of fallow crop than the occurrence of weed, especially in plots treated with rye or oat. Also, the fruit damage by aphid was found severe in these treatment plots. The fruit yield in plots treated with hairy vetch and barley was increased 5.7% and 2.6%, respectively, compared to that of PE films. The present experiment findings implied that these fallow crops had significant beneficial effects on improvement of soil qualities and could be utilized for mulching materials in watermelon cropping system.

  • To develop artificial cultivation and improve some problems such as auto-lysis on commercialization of Coprinus comatus that has been known edible and medicinal mushroom, they were conducted for selection of superior strain, suitable culture methods for mycelial growth and fruiting, and morphological characteristics of fruit body. Strain CM 980301 of Coprinus comatus was selected as a superior strain for artificial cultivation. Wheat grain and rice straw full-grown compost media were most effective for preparation of spawn and artificial cultivation of C. comatus, respectively. Spawn running of Coprinus spp. on the rice straw full-grown compost media required to be 15 days from 24 to $28^{\circ}C$. The casing layer incubation before initiation of fruit body formation, required for 13 days at same temperature for spawn running. And then require $10{\sim}11$ days for initiation and $7{\sim}8$ days for development of fruit body from 20 to $24^{\circ}C$. The fruit body of strain CM 980301 was harvested within a week from initiation of primordium formation. The hardness of pileus and stipe that were harvested in optimal stage showed 102 to 169, and 128 to $182\;g/cm^2$, respectively. Yields of srain CM 980301 from the rice straw full-grown compost media was $37.7kg/3.3m^2$. Weight of individual fruit body was 17.9 g in average.

  • This study was conducted to investigate a suitable substrate formulation for bag cultivation of Hypsizygus marmoreus. To determine the optimum media composition for H. marmoreus, chemical properties of various media and culture properties were investigated. The fastest primordia formation (9.0 days), the shortest fruiting body harvest period (18.0 days), and the highest yield (144.7 g/bag) were realized with the T6 formulation (55:15:20:5:5 mixing ratio of poplar sawdust, wheat bran, rice bran, dried soybean powder, and palm kernel, respectively). The chemical properties of the T6 formulation were pH, 6.0; total carbon, 19.0%; total nitrogen, 0.83%; C/N ratio, 22.8; P2O5, 0.61%; K2O, 0.46%; and MgO, 0.29%. This is the first attempt using plastic bags for cultivation and will help expand the production of H. marmoreus.

  • Analysis of breeding gains in grain yield has been intensively conducted in wheat, barley, oat, maize, and soybean. Such information is limited in rice. The objective of this study was to compare the breeding gains and cultural gains contributed to yield gains of Korean rice varieties since early 1900s. Two sets of yield data were used for analysis; the historical yield data of 1908 for old japonica cultivars, and present yield data in the years from 1996 to 1998 for the six cultivars, consisting of previous two old cultivars and four contemporary cultivars. The old cultivars were two native cultivars, Jodongi and Damageum, while contemporary cultivars were two premium quality japonica cultivars, Hwaseongbyeo and Dongjinbyeo, and two Tongil-type cultivars, high yielding cultivars developed from indica/japonica hybridization, Milyang23 and Dasanbyeo. The yield differences of old cultivars between the experiments in 1908 and the experiments from 1996 to 1998 were estimated as cultural gains (1.84 tons $\textrm{ha}^{-1}$) due to the improvement of cultivation technology. Yield differences between the old cultivars and contemporary cultivars were considered total yield gains during the periods. These were 2.51 tons $\textrm{ha}^{-1}$ for japonica cultivars and 3.81 tons $\textrm{ha}^{-1}$ for Tongil-type cultivars. From these data, the genetic gain of 0.67 tons $\textrm{ha}^{-1}$ and 1.97 tons $\textrm{ha}^{-1}$ were estimated for japonica cultivars and Tongil-type cultivars respectively. The ratio between cultural gain and genetic gain appeared to be 2.7:1 for japonica cultivars and 1:1 for Tongil-type cultivars. This analysis clearly showed the higher genetic contribution in Tongil-type cultivars than in japonica cultivars, suggesting a guideline to be used when planning new yield improvement programs. Additional implication has emerged when a better yield response to modem cultivation technology was found in one of the old cultivars, suggesting the combined improvement between breeding and cultural improvement is necessary for attaining the maximum yield capacity of a crop.
