  • In this work, we investigated the variation of optical characteristics with the thickness of bulk GaN grown by hydride vapor phase epitaxy(HVPE) to evaluate applicability as GaN substrates in fabrication of high-brightness optical devices and high-power devices. We fabricated 2-inch GaN substrates by using HVPE method of various thickness (0.4, 0.9, 1.5 mm) and characterized the optical property with the variation of defect density and the residual stress using chemical wet etching, Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence. As a result, we confirmed the correlation of optical properties with GaN crystal thickness and applicability of high performance optical devices via fabrication of homoepitaxial substrate.

  • Urethane resin applicable for the first transcription of historical site and transcription of soil layer were synthesized in order to replace the imported urethane resin, NS-10. Comparing to the NS-10, the urethane polymers showed similar penetration to wet soil and formed a stable layer of polyurethane during progress working the peeling off the polyurethane pre-product from epoxy surface of final product. The urethane resins used for the first transcription of historical site improved tensile strength, which is consistent with that of NS-10. In addition the urethane resin for transcription of soil layer was supplied with hardness that have a also same strong point as like NS-10. This property is advantage due to simplifying the transcription work of soil layer in backward. When we tested to the real ground soil as well as experimentation compressed soil with use these synthesis urethane resin, we ca get the satisfying result in penetration property and stability and these properties evaluated the resins as an advanced product serving better convenience for worker.

  • InGaN material is being studied increasingly as a prospective material for solar cells. One of the merits for solar cell applications is that the band gap energy can be engineered from 0.7 eV for InN to 3.4 eV for GaN by varying of indium composition, which covers almost of solar spectrum from UV to IR. It is essential for better cell efficiency to improve not only the crystalline quality of the epitaxial layers but also fabrication of the solar cells. Fabrication includes transparent top electrodes and surface texturing which will improve the carrier extraction. Surface texturing is one of the most employed methods to enhance the extraction efficiency in LED fabrication and can be formed on a p-GaN surface, on an N-face of GaN, and even on an indium tin oxide (ITO) layer. Surface texturing method has also been adopted in InGaN-based solar cells and proved to enhance the efficiency. Since the texturing by direct etching of p-GaN, however, was known to induce the damage and result in degraded electrical properties, texturing has been studied widely on ITO layers. However, it is important to optimize the ITO thickness in Solar Cells applications since the reflectance is fluctuated by ITO thickness variation resulting in reduced light extraction at target wavelength. ITO texturing made by wet etching or dry etching was also revealed to increased series resistance in ITO film. In this work, we report a new way of texturing by deposition of thickness-optimized ITO films on ITO nano dots, which can further reduce the reflectance as well as electrical degradation originated from the ITO etching process.

  • Effect of the flame retardants on Dancheong is studied in the present work. Two kinds of flame retardants were applied on Dancheong specimens and compared with control groups on which distilled water was applied instead of the flame retardants. The flame retardants enhanced the hygroscopic property of the surface of Dancheong. Furthermore, the added flame retardants reacted with oyster shell white($CaCO_3$) and lead red($Pb_3O_4$), producing new chemical compounds like Calcium phosphate tribasic and Lead Phosphates which make the painted layer of Dancheong dissolving and whitening over certain period of time. When applied in excessive amount and exposed in repetitive wet and dry condition, especially, they aggravate the surface problems significantly. These results will provide a good reference on the study of the discoloring/whitening effect of Dancheong layers at many traditional wooden building in Korea.

  • The present paper investigates the performance of direct wet mineral carbonation technology to fix carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) from relatively high $CO_2$ concentration feeding gas using wollastonite ($CaSiO_3$)-water (and 0.46 M acetic acid) suspension solution. To minimize the energy consumed on the process, the carbonation in this work is carried out at atmospheric pressure and slightly higher room temperature. As a result, carbon fixation is confirmed on the surface of $CaSiO_3$ after carbonation with wollastonite-water suspension solution and its amount is increased according to the $CO_2$ composition in the feeding gas. The leaching and carbonation ratio of wollastonite-water suspension system obtained from the carbonation with 50% of $CO_2$ composition feeding gas is 13.2% and 10.4%, respectively. On the other hand, the performance of wollastonite-acetic acid in the same condition is 63% for leaching and 1.39% for carbonation.

  • The higher valence state of iron i.e., Fe(VI) was employed for the treatment of Cu(II)-EDTA in the aqueous/waste waters. The ferrate(VI) was prepared through wet oxidation of Fe(III) by sodium hypochlorite. The purity of prepared Fe(VI) was above 93%. The stability of Fe(VI) solution decreased as solution pH decreased through self decomposition. The reduction of Fe(VI) was obtained by using the UV-Visible measurements. The dissociation of Cu(II)-EDTA complex through oxidation of EDTA using Fe(VI) and subsequent treatment of organic matter and metal ions by Fe(III) reduced from Fe(VI) in bench-scale of continuous flow reactor were studied. The removal efficiencies of copper were 69% and 79% in pH control basin and reactor, respectively, at 120 minutes as retention time. In addition, Cu(II)-EDTA in the reactor was decomplexated more than 80% after 120 minutes as retention time. From this work, a continuous treatment process for the wastewater containing metal and EDTA by employing Fe(VI) as muluti-functional agent was developed.

  • This study is aimed at typifying the crossing structure and inquiring into the characteristics of vegetation distribution by type targeting Dorimcheon(stream), Banghakcheon(stream), Seongnaecheon(stream) and some sections of Yangjaecheon(stream) in Seoul through the establishment of basic data for restoring vegetation in urban stream. This research classified the crossing structure into 56 slope types and 31 vertical types in combination with the three items, such as bank slope(vertical style, slope style) of bank, absence or presence of waterside, and revetment structure. This research derived nine slope types including SB1 (revetment of low water level-revetment with vegetation, and revetment of high water level-nature riverside) including SG5(revetment of low water-concrete, and revetment of high water level-riprap work), and three vertical types, such as VH4(bank revetment-wet masonry), and VH7(bank revetment - concrete )from the target survey areas. Among these, both revetment of low water level and high water level were found to be distributed on the longest section as the type of SG7 and VG7 structured in concrete. As a result of inquiry and analysis of micro topography structure and vegetation structure of eight major types, this research could find out the influence of crossing structure on plant vegetation according to the characteristic by typified item, but there appeared no distinct characteristic of vegetation distribution by crossing structure.

  • This geographical study is to identify the reality of Nokdun island which was once settled and farmed by our ancestor, but currently the island is do facto under Russia's control. Various historical documents including old maps, current large scale maps and satellite images besides field work were used for full analysis. According to historical records, up until Chosun Dynasty, Nokdun island in the lower Tuman river was one of the frontier fortified base crossed the river for the northern defense as well as seasonal farming for the farmer of Kyounghung border area. Even though the island was unjustly lost to Russia by the Beijing Treaty in the late Chosun period, the whole area of Nokdun was occupied and farmed by sole Koreans until the deportation by Stalin was forcibly measured. In these days due to the change of Tumn river channel and new deposition by river it became very difficult to find the original shape of Nokdun island. However, through intensive field works based on historical records, the research team found out the existence of the old wet-dry fields, old rural farmhouse remnants, and small and medium size of millstones that are supporting the reality of the island. Especially, the team traced a mud fortress presumedly built in the early Chosun period. We believe it might allow to allocate the exact location of Nokdun island in near future.

  • We have carried out the experiment to investigate optimal drainage time of barley seeding synchronized with rice harvesting in paddy field. Number of emerged barley seedling on moist paddy field was less than that of common paddy field. It is very hard to plow using combine owing to long time to work on wet condition compared to drying condition of paddy field. According to the drainage time, growth and yield of barley were not significantly different. However, late drainage time decreased the spikes per $m^2$. Rice yield and 1,000 husked rice grain weight were not significant depending on drainage times at 15 days, 20 days and 25 days before barley seeding. The range of 1,000 husked rice grain weight was 21.7~22.2 g on different drainage conditions. In results, on considering of soil hardness and time of labor, the optimal contents of soil moisture was about 33%. This study reveals that drainage time at 20 days before barley seeding is proper to increase seedlings and yield.
