  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of different methods of feeding and processing of diets on performance, morphological changes in the small intestine and nutrient digestibility of young pigs. A total of 120 pigs (Youkshire${\times}$Landrace${\times}$Duroc; initial body weight of $5.83{\pm}0.67kg$) were randomly allotted into six treatments in a $2{\times}3$ factorial design. Treatments were 1) dry feeding with a mash diet (DM), 2) dry feeding with a pelleted diet (DP), 3) dry feeding with an expanded crumble diet (DEC), 4) wet feeding with a mash diet (WM), 5) wet feeding with a pelleted diet (WP), 6) wet feeding with an expanded crumble diet (WEC). Average daily gain (ADG) and average daily feed intake (ADFI) were not significantly (p>0.05) different among treatments. However, feed conversion ratio (FCR) was significantly improved when pigs fed a pelleted diet or an expanded crumble diet. Pigs fed an expanded crumble diet showed 9.2% and 17.3% improvement in ADG and FCR compared with those fed a mash diet. The morphological changes in the small intestine were examined at the termination (4 weeks after weaning) of the experiment. Differences in morphological changes of gastrointestinal tract were not significant among treatments. Though villus height was not significantly affected by feeding method or feed processing, the villus height of weaned pigs tended to be preserved by wet feeding. The use of a pelleted diet also helped to prevent the shortening of villus height. Pigs fed a WP diet maintained the highest villus height at all parts of the small intestine. There was no significant difference (p>0.05) in nutrient digestibility among treatments. However, nutrient digestibility for pigs fed a pelleted diet had a higher than that of pigs fed mash diets. Especially, pigs fed a WP diet digested 5.3% more P each day than those fed a DM diet. Compared with the mash diet, the expanded crumble diet decreased feed cost per kg weight gain by 15%. The net profit per pig was 79% higher in the expanded crumble diet pigs than in mash diet pigs. In conclusion, this study suggests that feeding processed diets to piglets can be more beneficial in terms of FCR and production cost.

  • Rice consumption has been continuously decreasing as the eating habits of Koreans have become westernized and diversified. The per capita annual rice consumption in Korea has dropped sharply from 136.4 kg in 1970 to 61.9 kg in 2016. The Korean government, therefore, has been trying to promote rice consumption by invigorating the processed food industry using rice flour. To facilitate the market for processed rice foods, it is essential to develop proper milling technology in terms of flour particle size and damaged starch content to produce high quality rice flour at competitive cost. Dry milling and wet milling are the two major processes used to produce rice flour. Although the dry milling process is relatively simple with a lower production cost, damaged starch content increases because of the high grain hardness of rice. In wet milling, the quality of rice flour is improved by reducing flour particle size as well as damaged starch content through soaking procedures. However, the production costs are high because of the additional expenses associated with the disposal of waste water, sterilization and drying of the wet flour. Recently developed technologies such as jet milling and cryogenic milling also require expensive investment and production. Therefore, developing new rice cultivars with dry milling adaptability as well as good processing properties is an important goal of rice breeding in Korea. 'Suweon 542' is a floury endosperm mutant line derived from sodium azide treatment on a high-yield, early maturing, and non-glutinous japonica rice cultivar, 'Namil'. Compared with the wild type, after dry milling process, the grain hardness of 'Suweon 542' was significantly lower because of its round and loosely packed starch granules. Also, the flour of 'Suweon 542' had significantly smaller particles and less damaged starch than 'Namil' and other rice cultivars and its particle size distribution was similar to a commercial wheat cultivar. Recently, through collaborations with nine universities and food companies, a total of 21 kinds of processed prototypes, using the dry milling flour of 'Suweon 542', were evaluated. In the production of major rice processing products, there was no significant quality difference between the flours prepared by wet milling and dry milling. Although the amount of water added to the dough was slightly increased, it was confirmed that the recipe applying the wet flour could be used without significant change. To efficiently transfer the floury endosperm characteristics of 'Suweon 542' to other commercial rice cultivars, it is essential to develop DNA marker tightly linked to the target gene. Association analysis using 70 genome-wide SSR markers and 94 F2 plants derived from 'Suweon 542'/'Milyang 23' showed that markers on chromosome 5 explained a large portion of the variation in floury grains percentage (FGP). Further analysis with an increased number of SSR markers revealed that the floury endosperm of 'Suweon 542' was directed by a major recessive locus, flo7(t), located in the 19.33-19.86 Mbp region of chromosome 5, with RM18639 explaining 92.2% of FGP variation in the F2 population. Through further physical mapping, a co-segregate and co-dominant DNA marker with the locus, flo7(t) was successfully developed, by which, thereby, breeding efficiency of rice cultivars having proper dry milling adaptability with high yield potential or useful functional materials would be improved. 'Suweon 542' maintained the early maturity of the wild type, Namil, which can be used in rice-wheat double cropping systems in Korea not only for improved arable land but also for sharing flour production facilities. In addition to the high susceptibility against major rice diseases, nevertheless, another possible drawback of 'Suweon 542' is the high rate of viviparous under prolonged rainfall during the harvesting season. To overcome susceptibility and vivipary of 'Suweon 542', the progeny lines, derived from the crosses 'Suweon 542' and 'Jopyeong', an early maturing rice cultivar with multiple resistance against rice blast, bacterial blight, and rice strip virus, and 'Heugjinju', a anthocyanin pigment containing black rice cultivar, were intensively evaluated. As the outputs, three dry milling suitable rice elite lines, 'Jeonju614', 'Jeonju615', and 'Jeonju616' were developed.

  • Effect of fixation methods on the flame retardant(FR) and performance properties of MDPPA/HMM treated cotton fabrics were studied. Combination of three different fixation methods - premercerization, swelling agent treatment, pad dry cure fixation, and wet fixation - were applied to flame retardant finish of cotton with MDPPA/HMM. As a result, an increase in internal volume of cotton fiber by pre-mercerization and addition of swelling agent, and wet fixation increased %add-on of FR agent improving FR efficiency and wash fastness. Tensile strength of MDPPA/HMM treated cotton fabrics by wet fixation and swelling agent were slightly decreased, but that of premercerized cotton was improved. Wet fixated fabric showed lower bending rigidity and better compressional properties which improved fabric hand. Retention of swelling ability of cotton treated with MDPPA/HMM improved moisture absorption properties.

  • The present work proposed a newly developed fluidized bed-type psychrometer that could be applicable to the high temperature and contaminant gases. The psychrometer is a device that test gas passes through the water in a glass bottle as a bubbly flow to obtain the adiabatic saturation temperature. A fluidized bed-type psychrometer was made and its characteristics were compared with the Assmann Psychrometer. The characteristic time was in the order of a hundred seconds, and decreased for the decrease of the mass of water and the increase of the air flow rate. The air flow rate and the insulation of the glass bottle were definitely important in the accurate measurement of the wet bulb temperature. The error in wet bulb temperature became less than 5 percent of the difference of dry and wet bulb temperatures if the air velocity in the glass bottle was greater than 1.5m/s.

  • The universality of the pseudo wet bulb temperature has been established in the drying of macroporous inerts, microporous inerts, and microporous swellable materials using water and methyl alcohol as the liquids. The pseudo wet bulb temperature is a new constant temperature intermediate between the wet bulb and dry bulb temperatures of the air during the second falling rate period. This temperature is calculated from consideration of the heat transfer to, and vapor diffusion from, liquid evaporating at the liquid-air boundary. The experimental results agree with that calculated from the equation proposed by Nissan, Bolles and George.

  • It has been problematic to repulp the dry broke treated with permanent wet strength agents like PAE, UF and MF. Solution type GPAM has the benefit of easy repulping but it has problems of cocross-linking and tends to gel. Therefore, the product concentration must be lower than 10% to reduce the gel generation problem. We developed emulsion type GPAM by an inverse emulsion technology to resolve both the repulping problem with permanent wet strength agents and the stability problem of GPAM solution products.

  • This paper is to analyze the surface roughness in wet and dry surface grinding in which working conditions are table feed, cross feed and down feed. FFT analyzer is used to identify the surface roughness and the data of surface roughness are stored and displayed using an interfaced computer. In results, components affecting surface roughness exist within 200Hz with respect the conditions and methods of grinding operation. Also, with increase of table feed, cross feed and down feed, the value of surface roughness increases. Of them, cross feed has first influence on surface roughness. In dry, preciser surface can be obtained than one in wet.

  • Meteorological data are often needed to evaluate the long-term effects of proposed hydrologic changes. The evaluation is frequently undertaken using deterministic mathematical models that require daily weather data as input including precipitation amount, maximum and minimum temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation and wind speed. Stochastic generation of the required weather data offers alternative to the use of observed weather records. The precipitation is modeled by a Markov Chain-exponential model. The other variables are generated by multivariate model with means and standard deviations of the variables conditioned on the wet or dry status of the day as determined by the precipitation model. Ultimately, the objective of this paper is to compare Richardson's model and the improved weather generation model in their ability to provide daily weather data for the crop model to study potential impacts of climate change on the irrigation needs and crop yield. However this paper does not refer to the improved weather generation model and the crop model. The new weather generation model improved will be introduced in the Journal of KWRA.
