A Study on The Sampling Error of PCBs Deposited on Pine Needles (소나무잎에 침착된 PCBs의 샘플링 오차에 관한 연구)

  • In the study to reduce the error on the method of sampling pine needles to monitor the atmospheric concentration of polychlorinated biphenyls(PBCs),it was found that: 1. Concentration of PCBs almost linearly increased from new to three-years-old pine needles, so that the biomonitoring method using pine needles canbe applied to measuring long-term contamination from air in a local area. Needles of differernt age should not be mixed in sampling but be seperately analysed .It no good idea comparing PCB concentrations of differently aged needles. 2. Concentratio n of PCBs on pine needles had nothing to do whit the indivisual and age of the pine tree. 3. Concentration of PCBs on pine needles growing avobe was lower than that on needke below. 4. Concentration of PCBs on pine needles locatied in poorly ventilative places such as needle of a forest was lower than that on needles in well-ventilated areas.

A Study on the Infrared Radiation Properties for SiO$_2$/Fe$_2$O$_3$Films Coated on aluminum (알루미늄에 코팅된 SiO$_2$/Fe$_2$O$_3$막의 적외선 복사특성에 관한 연구)

  • FT-IR and thermography were used to investigate the infrared radiation characteristic of SiO$_2$ film and SiO$_2$/Fe$_2$O$_3$film coated on aluminum. Through FT-TR spectrum, SiO$_2$film showed high infrared absorption in accordance with the stretching vibration of Si-O-Si, and as$ Fe_2$$O_3$was mixed additional absorption band appeared resulting from the stretching vibration of Fe-O at $590cm^{-1}$ and the bond of Si-O-Fe at $900 cm^{-1}$ The two kinds of film measured by the integration method and the reflective method coincided with each other in the wavelength area of infrared absorption and radiation, and corresponded well with Kirchhoff's law as the infrared emissivity is high in wavelength where infrared absorption rate is high. The emissivity of $SiO_2$ film was 0.65 and that of $SiO_2$/Fe$_2$$O_3$film was 0.77, so the addition of$ Fe_2$$O_3$ raised the infrared emissivity by approximately 13%.$ SiO_2$$Fe_2$$O_3$ film is efficient as an infrared radiator at below $100^{\circ}C$. The temperature of heat radiation after 7 minutes was 117$^{\circ}C$ in aluminum plate and $155^{\circ}C$ in $SiO_2$$Fe_2$$O_3$ film, $38^{\circ}C$ higher than the former.

  • According to the intercombined review of chemical and biological investigation it has been noted that the metabolizable energy per gram dietary protein of mixed diet of daily intake patterned by Korean population has been found 3.4-3.6 Cal., which entails 10-12% level of the protein calorie percentage of total metabolizable energy, the biological value being fallen within the scope 63-73. The structure of dietary protein has revealed that the lysine and isoleucine were primary limiting amino acids and threonine secondary limiting as a general trend, however, it is assumed that the ultimate nutritional effect of dietary protein might be restricted uniformly among regions by the amount of lysine, since the lysine availability has been yielded as low as 72-82% level. As for the net protein utillization NPUst falls in the range of 52-62 and the NPUop 47-58. In either part the mountainous region has demonstrated lowest value and the urban area highest, these trend being obviously associated with the ratio of animal protein relative to the vegetable origin. The net dietary protein calorie percentage (NDpCal %) has been found within the range of 5-7 that may be capable of meeting the requirement for the maintenance of adult, though for the growth it is insufficient. Present level of total caloric intake would not influence on the fate of protein value of prevailing regional diet in terms of caloric restriction, since the present intake of food energy is higher than the lower limit of caloric intake that would impair the biological performance of dietary protein fed ad libitum basis. Based on the protein efficiency, the adequacy of current level of protein intake was analyzed in terms of utilizable protein, and it has been demonstrated that the 37.8g of utilizable protein in the fishery region and 38.2g in the mountainous region were bellow the FAO recommendation. Accordin to the hematological study it may be interpreted that the anemic symptoms of the mountainous region has some possibility of being related to the inferior status of dietary protein in quality as well as in quantity.

Classification accuracy measures with minimum error rate for normal mixture (정규혼합분포에서 최소오류의 분류정확도 측도)

  • In order to estimate an appropriate threshold and evaluate its performance for the data mixed with two different distributions, nine kinds of well-known classification accuracy measures such as MVD, Youden's index, the closest-to- (0,1) criterion, the amended closest-to- (0,1) criterion, SSS, symmetry point, accuracy area, TA, TR are clustered into five categories on the basis of their characters. In credit evaluation study, it is assumed that the score random variable follows normal mixture distributions of the default and non-default states. For various normal mixtures, optimal cut-off points for classification measures belong to each category are obtained and type I and II error rates corresponding to these cut-off points are calculated. Then we explore the cases when these error rates are minimized. If normal mixtures might be estimated for these kinds of real data, we could make use of results of this study to select the best classification accuracy measure which has the minimum error rate.

Dehydrogenation of Ethylbenzene to Styrene with CO2 over TiO2-ZrO2 Bifunctional Catalyst

  • In the dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene to styrene, CO2 could play a role as an oxidant to increase conversion of ethylbenzene and stability as well over TiO2-ZrO2 mixed oxide catalysts. TiO2-ZrO2 catalysts were prepared by co-precipitation method and were characterized by BET surface area, bulk density, X-ray diffraction, temperature programmed desorption of NH3 and CO2. These catalysts were found to be X-ray amorphous with enhanced surface areas and acid-base properties both in number and strength when compared to the respective oxides (TiO2 and CO2). These catalysts were found to be highly active (> 50% conversion), selective (> 98%) and catalytically stable (10 h of time-on-stream) at 600 oC for the dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene to styrene. However, in the nitrogen stream, both activity and stability were rather lower than those in the stream with CO2. The TiO2-ZrO2 catalysts were catalytically superior to the simple oxide catalysts such as TiO2 and ZrO2. The synergistic effect of CO2 has clearly been observed in directing the product selectivity and prolonging catalytic activity.

Occurrence of Sweet-potato Whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) and Its Response to Insecticide in Gyeonggi Area (경기지역에서 담배가루이의 발생 및 약제반응)

  • This study investigated the occurrence of sweet potato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci affecting cucumber, eggplant and red pepper, as well as sweet potato species, and its response to insecticides in Gyeonggi province from 2010 to 2011. Sweet potato whitefly is widespread throughout the southern part of Gyeonggi province. Most regional populations of B. tabaci belong to biotype Q having been reported in the south Korea since 2005, but in Goyang mixed populations of two biotypes (B and Q) were found. Survey results of Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus (TYLCV) disease that was vectored by B. tabaci indicated that this virus disease was not spread throughout the Gyeonggi province. Biotype Q of B. tabaci was found to be resistant to neonicotinoid insecticides, whereas biotype B was highly susceptible to them.

3-D Perspectives of Atmospheric Aerosol Optical Properties over Northeast Asia Using LIDAR on-board the CALIPSO satellite (CALIPSO위성 탑재 라이다를 이용한 동북아시아 지역의 대기 에어러솔 3차원 광학특성 분포)

  • Backscatter signal observed from the space-borne Light Detection And Ranging (LIDAR) system is providing unique 3-dimensional spatial distribution as well as temporal variations for atmospheric aerosols. In this study, the continuous observations for aerosol profiles were analyzed during a years of 2012 by using a Cloud-Aerosol LIDAR with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP), carried on the Cloud-Aerosol LIDAR and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation (CALIPSO) satellite. The statistical analysis on the particulate extinction coefficient and depolarization ratio for each altitude was conducted according to time and space in order to estimate the variation of optical properties of aerosols over Northeast Asia ($E110^{\circ}-140^{\circ}$, $N20^{\circ}$ $-50^{\circ}$). The most frequent altitudes of aerosols are clearly identified and seasonal mean aerosol profiles vary with season. Since relatively high particle depolarization ratios (>0.5) are found during all seasons, it is considered that the non-spherical aerosols mixed with pollution are mainly exists over study area. This study forms initial regional 3-dimensional aerosol information, which will be extended and improved over time for estimation of aerosol climatology and event cases.

Fabrication and Physicochemical Properties of Carbon/Titania/Bentonite Monolith for Architecture

  • In this study, we used activated carbon (AC) and titanium oxysulfate as a titanium precursor to prepare carbon/titania composites. We then mixed it with bentonite in different ratios to make a carbon/titania/bentonite monolith for use in architecture bricks by using Phenolic rosin (PR) as a bonding agent. The physicochemical properties of the prepared composites were analyzed by BET surface area, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), self-cleaning effect and bactericidal tests. The BET surface areas increased as the ratio of carbon/titania composites increased. The SEM microscopy showed that the $TiO_2$ and bentonite were coated on the surface of the AC. The XRD patterns showed a mixture structure of anatase and rutile of $TiO_2$ with a clear $SiO_2$ structure. The EDX spectra of the carbon/titania/bentonite monolith confirmed the presence of various elements, namely C, O, Ti and Si, as well as other, impure elements. Moreover, to determine the self-cleaning effect of the carbon/titania/bentonite monolith, we used methylene blue (MB, $C_{16}H_{18}N_3S{\cdot}Cl{\cdot}3H_2O$) in an aqueous solution under the irradiation of visible light. Accordingly, all of the samples had excellent degradation of the MB solution. Furthermore, it was observed that the composites with sunlight irradiation had a greater effect on E. coli than any other experimental conditions.

Stabilization of Arsenic in Paddy Soils Using Stabilizers (논토양 내 비소 불용화에 대한 안정화물질의 처리 효과)

  • BACKGROUND: Soil contamination of As is a very sensitive environmental issue due to its adverse impact on human health and different characteristics with other heavy metals. With public awareness of As poisoning, there has been growing interest in developing guideline and remediation technologies for As-contaminated soil. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effectiveness of stabilizing amendments and soil dressing methods on the mobility of As in the contaminated rice paddy soils nearby mining area. METHODS AND RESULTS: Different amendments were mixed with surface and subsurface contaminated soils at a ratio of 3% (w/w) and monitored for five months. Three different extractants including 0.01M $CaCl_2$, TCLP, and PBET were used to examine As bioavailability in the soil and the concentration of As in rice grain was also measured with an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) spectroscopy. The results showed that all amendment treatments decreased As concentration compared to the control. Especially, coal mine drainage sludge (CMDS) treatment showed the highest efficiency of decreasing As concentration in the soil and rice grain. The values of Pearson correlation (r) between As concentrations in the soil and rice grain were 0.782, 0.753, and 0.678 for $CaCl_2$, TCLP, and PBET methods, respectively. Especially, $CaCl_2$ method was highly correlated between As concentrations of the soil and soil solution (r=0.719), followed by TCLP (r=0.706), PBET (r=0.561) methods. CONCLUSION: Stabilizing amendments can effectively reduce available As concentration in the soils as well as soil solution, and thereby potentially mitigating risks of crop contamination by As.

Non-Gaussian feature of fluctuating wind pressures on rectangular high-rise buildings with different side ratios

  • To investigate the non-Gaussian feature of fluctuating wind pressures on rectangular high-rise buildings, wind tunnel tests were conducted on scale models with side ratios ranging from 1/9~9 in an open exposure for various wind directions. The high-order statistical moments, time histories, probability density distributions, and peak factors of pressure fluctuations are analyzed. The mixed normal-Weibull distribution, Gumbel-Weibull distribution, and lognormal-Weibull distribution are adopted to fit the probability density distribution of different non-Gaussian wind pressures. Zones of Gaussian and non-Gaussian are classified for rectangular buildings with various side ratios. The results indicate that on the side wall, the non-Gaussian wind pressures are related to the distance from the leading edge. Apart from the non-Gaussianity in the separated flow regions noted by some literature, wind pressures behind the area where reattachment happens present non-Gaussian nature as well. There is a new probability density distribution type of non-Gaussian wind pressure which has both long positive and negative tail found behind the reattachment regions. The correlation coefficient of wind pressures is proved to reflect the non-Gaussianity and a new method to estimate the mean reattachment length of rectangular high-rise building side wall is proposed by evaluating the correlation coefficient. For rectangular high-rise buildings, the mean reattachment length calculated by the correlation coefficient method along the height changes in a parabolic shape. Distributions of Gaussian and non-Gaussian wind pressures vary with side ratios. It is inappropriate to estimate the extreme loads of wind pressures using a fixed peak factor. The trend of the peak factor with side ratios on different walls is given.
