  • $\bullet$ We present a state-feedback RHC for discrete-time TS fuzzy systems with input constriants. $\bullet$ The controller employ the current and one-step past information on the fuzzy weighting functions. $\bullet$ It is obtained from the finite horizon optimization problem with the invariant ellipsoid constraint $\bullet$ Under parameterized LMI conditions on the terminal weighting matrix $\bullet$ The closed-loop system stability is guaranteed. $\bullet$ The parameterized linear matrix inequalities are relaxed to a finite number of solvable LMIs.

Optimization of LQR method for the active control of seismically excited structures

  • This paper introduces an appropriate technique to estimate the weighting matrices used in the linear quadratic regulator (LQR) method for active structural control. For this purpose, a parameter is defined to regulate the relationship between the structural energy and control force. The optimum value of the regulating parameter, is determined for single degree of freedom (SDOF) systems under seismic excitations. In addition, the suggested technique is generalized for multiple degrees of freedom (MDOF) active control systems. Numerical examples demonstrate the robustness of the proposed method for controlled buildings under a wide range of seismic excitations.

  • Topology optimization is applied to determine the layout of a structural component with a specified frequency by minimizing the difference between the specified structural frequency and a given frequency. The homogenization design method is employed and the topology design problem is solved by the optimality criteria method. The value of a weighting factor in the optimality criteria plays an important role in this topology design problem. The modified optimality criteria method approximated by using the binomial expansion is suggested to determine the suitable value of the weighting factor, which makes convergence stable. If a given frequency is set as an excited frequency, it is possible to avoid resonance by moving away the specified structural frequency from the given frequency. The results of several test problems are compared with previous works and show the validity of the proposed algorithm.

  • This paper presents a monitor positioning algorithm to identify the power quality event source in the distribution system with distributed generations. This algorithm determines the appropriate number of monitors and their locations considering power system topology together with distributed generation. This paper summarizes the guidelines of monitor positioning into five principles and defines the weighting factors according to the principles. To evaluate the adequacy of monitor positioning results, ambiguity indices considering monitor location and system topology are proposed. The optimal number and locations of monitors are determined from optimization routine using the weighting factors and the monitor positioning results are evaluated in terms of ambiguity indices. The algorithm is applied to IEEE 13 bus test feeder and suggests the optimal number and locations of power quality monitors. The proposed approach can realize the expert's knowledge on monitor positioning into a sophisticated automatic computing algorithm.

  • This paper concerns a least square method for pattern optimization of a thinned sensor array in which the squared error between a desired pattern and a synthesized one is minimized. A weighting function is applied in the function with respect to the array visual range for a symmetric and asymmetric configuration for sensor spacing. An exponential weighting function is proposed to control the sidelobes efficiently around the mainbeam and to generate a uniform sidelobe. The resulting pattern may be employed to eliminate incoming interferences distributed uniformly around the array visual range.

Design Optimization of Pin-Fin Sharp to Enhance Heat Transfer

  • This work presents a numerical procedure to optimize the elliptic-shaped pin fin arrays to enhance turbulent heat transfer. The response surface method is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Navier Stokes analysis of flow and heat transfer. Shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model is used as a turbulence closure. Computational results for average heat transfer rate show a reasonable agreement with the experimental data. Four variables including major axis length, minor axis length, pitch and the pin fin length nondimensionalized by duct height are chosen as design variables. The objective function is defined as a linear combination of heat transfer and friction-loss related terms with weighting factor. D-optimal design is used to reduce the data points, and, with only 28 points, reliable response surface is obtained. Optimum shapes of the pin-fin arrays have been obtained in the range from 0.0 to 0.1 of weighting factor.

  • Topology optimization of the inner reinforcement for a vehicle's hood has been performed by evolutionary structural optimization(ESO) using a smoothing scheme. The purpose of this study is to obtain optimal topology of the inner reinforcement for a vehicle's hood considering the static stiffness of bending and torsion simultaneously. To do this, the multiobjective optimization technique was implemented. Optimal topologies were obtained by the ESO method. From several combinations of weighting factors, a Pareto-optimal solution was obtained. Also, a smoothing scheme was implemented to suppress the checkerboard pattern in the procedure of topology optimization. It is concluded that ESO method with a smoothing scheme is effectively applied to topology optimization of the inner reinforcement of a vehicle's hood considering the static stiffness of bending and torsion.

A Study of Multi-point Numerical Optimization Design for Transonic Airfoils (천음속 날개꼴의 Multi-point 수치최적화 설계에 관한 연구)

  • In the direct numerical optimization method, the aerodynamic coefficients of the airfoil designed by one-point design can be deteriorated at other operating points. Therefore, the capacity of the multi-point design is indispensable for actual airfoil design. In this paper, the two-point design of transonic airfoils is studied based on the Navier-Stokes equations flow solver and the feasible direction optimization algorithm, and the effects of weighting parameter were analyzed and compared. The results show that the airfoils designed by two-point design satisfy the performances at the peripheral regions of two operating points concurrently and have the favorable aerodynamic characteristics at the point which has larger weighting parameter than the other point.

Multi-objective durability and layout design of fabric braided braking hose in cyclic motion

  • The fabric braided braking hose that delivers the driver's braking force to brake cylinder undergoes the large deformation cyclic motion according to the steering and bump/rebound motions of vehicle. The cyclic large deformation of braking hose may give rise to two critical problems: the interference with other adjacent vehicle parts and the micro cracking stemming from the fatigue damage accumulation. Hence, both the hose deformation and the fatigue damage become the critical issue in the design of braking hose. In this context, this paper introduces a multi-objective optimization method for minimizing the both quantities. The total length of hose and the helix angles of fabric braided composite layers are chosen for the design variables, and the maximum hose deformation and the critical fatigue life cycle are defined by the individual single objective functions. The trade-off between two single objective functions is made by introducing the weighting factors. The proposed optimization method is validated and the improvement of initial hose design is examined through the benchmark simulation. Furthermore, the dependence of optimum solutions on the weighting factors is also investigated.

Optimization of a Wire-Spacer Fuel Assembly of Liquid Metal reactor

  • This study deals with the shape optimization of a wire spacer fuel assembly of Liquid Metal Reactors (LMRs). The Response Surface based optimization Method is used as an optimization technique with the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis of fluid flow and heat transfer using Shear Stress Transport (SST) turbulence model as a turbulence closure. Two design variables namely, pitch to fuel rod diameter ratio and lead length to fuel rod diameter ratio are selected. The objective function is defined as a combination of the heat transfer rate and the inverse of friction loss with a weighting factor. Three level full-factorial method is used to determine the training points. In total, nine experiments have been performed numerically and the resulting datas have been analysed for optimization study. Also, a comparison has been made between the optimized surface and the reference one in this study.
