The ability of three Echinochloa colona (L.) Link ecotypes to compete with rice (Oryza sativa L.) was evaluated. For all the ecotypes, E. colona was shorter and produced less leaf area and dry matter than rice at 15 days after seeding (DAS), whereas the reverse was observed from 30 to 60 DAS. Neither E. colona nor rice tillered during the first 15 DAS, but E. colona had greater accumulative tiller length than rice from 15 DAS. Rice absorbed more nitrogen than E. colona at 15 DAS. E. colona absorbed greater amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium than did rice between 30 and 60 DAS and increase in its density decreased the nutrients uptake of rice. Differences in the competitive ability of the ecotypes were related to the growth characteristics of the ecotypes and the period of competition between the two species. At the early growth stages the Pangasinan ecotype, which increased plant size rapidly and had a shorter life cycle, was more competitive against rice than the Leyte and South Cotabato ecotypes, which had a longer vegetative growth period. However, the reverse was observed at the later growth stages of the ecotypes.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the mulch effect of rice straw and dead water foxtail treated with herbicides on weed germination, seedling establishment, and early growth of rice under the no-till culture condition. The percent seedling establishment of rice straw + dead water foxtail mulch was decreased significantly compared to rice straw mulch and non-mulch. Rice straw mulch and rice straw + dead water foxtail mulch inhibited the early growth of no-till direct seeded rice remarkably. However, they promoted rice growth after active tillering stage. Rice straw mulch and rice straw+dead water foxtail mulch in no-till direct seeding decreased weed occurrence significantly. The control value of barnyardgrass, compared with non-mulch, was 96.5% in the rice straw mulch and 75.6% in the rice straw + dead water foxtail mulch, respectively. The pH and concentration of dissolved oxygen in irrigated water were reduced significantly by both rice straw mulch and rice straw+dead water foxtail mulch during early rice growth stage.

Golden apple snails (Pomacea canaliculat) (GAS) are widely used for weed control in rice cultivation. However, concerns on the ecological risk of invasive GAS species are increasing. This study aimed to evaluate the overall impacts of GAS on weed control, abundance of aquatic animals and insects, and rice yield, in comparison with that from other biocontrol agents such as loach (Misgurnus mizolepis) and catfish (Silurus asotus), which are alternatives for biological weed control in rice paddy cultivation. Field experiments included five treatments; control, herbicide, GAS, loach, and catfish. During the rice growth, weed appearance and biological abundance were monitored, and at harvest, the rice yield was determined. Weed control efficiency was the highest for GAS treatment (100%), followed by that for herbicide (95.8%), loach (57.5%), and catfish treatments (31.7%). Insect abundance was considerably decreased in GAS treatment due to heavy weed removal, which affects the habitat of aquatic animals and insects. The amount of rice yield (unit: kg 10 a-1) was in the order of GAS (798.9) > loach (708.1) = herbicide (700.7) > catfish (629.4) > control (496.0). Therefore, considering the weed control efficiency, biological abudance, and rice yield, loach could be a potential alternative for biological weed control in organic rice farming. However, the activity of the biocontrol agents are susceptible to environmental conditions; therefore, further studies under different conditions are essential to confirm these findings.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of mecoprop-wp concentrations on weed control, growth characters and yield in flax, after 7cm and 14cm of plant height it to the field. The major weeds were Alopecurus aequalis var. a murensis (kom) ohwi, Persicaria hydropiper spach, Lamium amplexicaule L, Stellaria alsine Grimm var. undulata ohwi, Eleusine indica(L.) Gaertn. Flax yield were increased somewhat more with 250g/10a mecoprop-wp at 7cm of plant height than the other treatment and by hand weeding treatment of mecoprop-wp, 250g/10a at 7cm of plant height was slightly harmful for the flax with recommended concentration, On the other hand, all treatments were harmful in the double dosage level.
This study was conducted to develop labor and chemical cultural practice improvement for weed control in ginseng field. Five crop species were screened in vitro and three crop extracts were sprayed in the test allelopathic effect for weed species. Methyl alcohol extracts of rice, oat, rye and wheat straw showed inhibitory effect on the germination of six weed species, Amaranthus retroflexus, Chenopodium album, Arthraxon hispidus, Digitaria adscendens, Echinochloa crus-galli, and Setaria viridis. Especially, extract of oat straw was most effective to inhibit the germination of six weed species tested. Also, spraying the extract solution of rice, rye and wheat straw was effective to inhibit the growth of weeds in ginseng field. Ginseng root length, diameter, fresh and dry weight in extract spraying plot were higher than those of non-treatment plot.
This study was carried out to investigate the classification and the growing characteristics of biennial weed species in a newly formed transplanting lawn grass land. Measuring size in the experimental plot was $1{\times}1m$ in the 9 different locations, and experimental design was randomized complete plot with 3 replications. The results obtained are summarized as follows. 1) Weed species in a newly formed lawn field are consisted of 29.4% of Cruciferae, 29.4% of Compositae, 23.5% of Caryophyllaceae, 11.8% of Gramineae, and 5.9% of Labiatae family 2) Emerging percentage of weed species are consisted of 47.1% on October, 41.2% on November, 5.9% on both September and December, respectively. 3) Distribution rate about flowering time of weed species was in order of 58.5% on May, 23.5% on April, 11.8% on March, and 5.9% on June. 4) Weed species were grouped according to the plant height. It was observed that below 20cm, 20-40cm, 40-60cm and above 60cm of plant height were 23.5%, 47.1%, 17.6% and 11.8%, respectively.

The study was performed in order to derive the management methods of revegetation space on embankment upper in the shoulder of expressway. The pilot study was conducted in 2013 on the test road section of the Jungbu Inland Expressway (Smart Highway) and continues to be monitored until 2020. In the test, three commonly used methods for weed control were applied. In the early two to three years, most of the methods were effective in controlling weeds. However, at the end of six years, weed suppression effects were different for each treatment. Vegetation coverage was 90% in the untreated control, 70-80% wood chip mulching method, 50-60% solidification method, and 20% sheet mulching method. The sheet method was found to be the most effective given the low vegetation coverage was effective in controlling weeds. The wood chip mulching method is promoting weed growth over time, and weeds are invading as the effect of soil hardening is reduced in the place where the soil hardener is treated. Among the methods applied in the test, mulching the sheet is the most effective, but it is important to use a durable sheet. In the future, it is necessary to find ways to control weeds on road shoulders, considering both economic and environmental aspects. For the proper management in the shoulder of expressway set target zone is needed. Clear standards for weed control on expressway should be established. And the technology to be applied must be durable for 3 years or more and must be able to suppress the amount of weeds to a level of 20% or less.
This experiment was conducted to find out the possibility for reducing herbicidal dose of the recommended herbicides in combining with the plant growth regulator "chlorflurenol" at the Yeongnam Crop Experiment Station, from 1981 to 1982. Chlorflurenol itself exhibited weed suppression effect against Monochoria raginalis Presl., Rotala indica Koehne, Cyperus difformis L., Lindernia procrembens Philcox, etc. and its effect increased as the concentrations of chlorflurenol increased from 100 to 1,000 ㎖/㏊. Combination of chlorflurenol with butachlor or thiobencarb, showing synergistic effect, reduced their recommended herbicidal rates by 50 to 75%, showing 90% of weed control rate, stic but combined treatment between chlorflurenol and bentazon showed an antagonistic effect since bentazon had poor control ability to Echinochloa crusgalli Beauv. An application of chlorflurenol showed no significant effect on rice growth, in terms of dry weight, but it resulted in the decrease in the ratio of leaf blade to other non-photosynthetic organ.

Introduction of rye living mulch in soybean production is important for labor-saving and reduction of herbicide usage for weeding by weed suppression and for soil conservation by mulching of rye. Soybean and rye were row-planted and broadcasted simultaneously at different planting times (May 15, May 25, June 5) and row widths (35 and 70 cm) in 2010, different soybean cultivars (Daepoong, Singi) and planting times (May 15 and June 1) in 2011, respectively, and investigated weed occurrence, early growth and yield of soybean. Acalypha australis, which is known to herbicide-resistant weed, could be controlled ecologically by rye living mulch. Occurrence of Acalypha australis was controlled effectively also by mixture of alachlor and linulon at no mulch in 2011. Early growth amount of soybean plant per area was increased by narrow row width (35 cm) at rye living mulch, which was helpful in the control of weeds, but grain yield of soybean with narrow row was decreased compared to conventional row width (70 cm) at the planting in early June. It is concluded that soybean planting as row width 70 cm in early June is proper at simultaneous planting with rye.
Soil temperature was higher in clear or blue polyethylene film and bare soil than in black or green polyethylene film and straw mulching. Light transmission was low in black, blue or green colored polyethylene film and straw mulching. Germination of weeds was generally high under clear polyethylene film but black polyethylene film inhibited the germination. Germination of Portulaca oleracea, Setaria viridis and Amaranthus retroflexus increased under blue polyethylene film but inhibition of germination was observed in Erigeron canadensis, Avena fatua, Chenopodium ablum, Digitaria sanguinalis and Echinochloa crusgalli. Green polyethylene film mostly inhibited germination of weeds except A, fatua, C. album and E. canadensis. The greatest number of weeds emerged was obtained in clear polyethylene film, next in bare soil but green or blue polyethylene film inhibited the emergence of weeds. However, no emergence of weeds was observed under black polyethylene film. The highest dry weight of weeds was obtained in clear polyethylene film, next in bare soil, but green or blue polyethylene film and straw mulching caused suppression of weed growth. No weeds were grown under black polyethylene film.
