  • In this research, we have developed a "computer tutor" that mimics the human tutor with animated tutoring dialog agent and the agent was integrated to teaching-learning material for elementary science subject. The developed system is a natural language based teaching-learning system using one-to-one dialogue. The developed pedagogical dialogue teaching-learning system analysis student's answer then provides appropriate answer or questions after comparing the student's answer with elementary school level achievement. When the agent gives either question or answer it uses the TTS(Text-to-Speech) function. Also the agent has an animated human tutor face for providing more human like feedback. The developed dialogue interface has been applied to 64 6th grade students. The test results show that the test group's average score is higher than the control group by 10.797. This shows that unlike conventional web courseware, our approach that "ask-answer" process and the animated character, which has human tutor's emotional expression, attracts students and helps to immerse to the courseware.

  • In this paper, we propose the method of converting 2D image to 3D image using linear curves in HTML5. We use only one image without any other information about depth map for creating 3D images. So we filter the original image to extract RGB colors for left and right eyes. After selecting the ready-made control point of linear curves to set up depth values, users can set up the depth values and modify them. Based on the depth values that the end users select, we reflect them. Anaglyph 3D is automatically made with the whole and partial depth information. As all of this work has been designed and implemented in Web environment using HTML5, it is very easy and convenient and end users can create any 3D image that they want to make.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between antioxidant food intake pattern and asthma control status in Korean adolescents. This study was conducted using data from 1,578 patients diagnosed with asthma among the participants in the 11th online health behavior survey. Statistical analyses were performed for sociodemographic variables, known risk factors for asthma worsening, and all variables which were related to food intake pattern. For final decision, logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the associations between antioxidant food intake and asthma worsening. Male gender and smoking experiences were associated with asthma exacerbation. Low intake of antioxidant foods status also significantly increased asthma exacerbations. Antioxidant food intake and smoking prevention education is important for adolescent asthma patients. It is highly needed to recommend taking fruits and vegetables properly.

  • This paper describes analytical investigation into a new dual function system including a couple of shear links which are connected in series using chevron bracing capable to correlate its performance with magnitude of earthquakes. In this proposed system, called Chevron Knee-Vertical Link Beam braced system (CK-VLB), the inherent hysteretic damping of vertical link beam placed above chevron bracing is exclusively utilized to dissipate the energy of moderate earthquakes through web plastic shear distortion while the rest of the structural elements are in elastic range. Under strong earthquakes, plastic deformation of VLB will be halted via restraining it by Stopper Device (SD) and further imposed displacement subsequently causes yielding of the knee elements located at the bottom of chevron bracing to significantly increase the energy dissipation capacity level. In this paper first by studying the knee yielding mode, a suitable shape and angle for diagonal-knee bracing is proposed. Then finite elements models are developed. Monotonic and cyclic analyses have been conducted to compare dissipation capacities on three individual models of passive systems (CK-VLB, knee braced system and SPS system) by General-purpose finite element program ABAQUS in which a bilinear kinematic hardening model is incorporated to trace the material nonlinearity. Also quasi-static cyclic loading based on the guidelines presented in ATC-24 has been imposed to different models of CK-VLB with changing of vertical link beam section in order to find prime effectiveness on structural frames. Results show that CK-VLB system exhibits stable behavior and is capable of dissipating a significant amount of energy in two separate levels of lateral forces due to different probable earthquakes.

  • Background: Published data on the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the ESR1 gene and breast cancer susceptibility are inconclusive or controversial. The aim of this Human Genome Epidemiology (HuGE) review and meta-analysis was to derive a more precise estimation of this relationship. Methods: A literature search of Pubmed, Embase, Web of science and CBM databases was conducted from inception through September 1th, 2012. Crude odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to assess the strength of association. Results: A total of five studies including 1,678 breast cancer cases and 1,678 general population controls in Asian populations were involved in this meta-analysis. When all the eligible studies were pooled into the meta-analysis, the higher transcriptional activity variant allele T of ESR1 PvuII (C>T) (rs2234693) in pre-menopausal breast cancer women showed a significant relation to increased risk (OR = 1.13, 95%CI: 1.01-1.28, P = 0.040) in contrast to their post-menopausal counterparts which showed non-significant increased risk (OR = 1.01, 95%CI: 0.87-1.18, P = 0.858). Nevertheless, no significant association between ESR1 XbaI (A>G) (rs9340799) polymorphism and the risk of breast cancer was observed in pre-menopausal and post-menopausal individuals. Conclusion: Based on a homogeneous Asian population, results from the current meta-analysis indicates that the ESR1 PvuII (C>T) polymorphism places pre-menopausal breast cancer women at risk for breast cancer, while ESR1 XbaI (A>G) polymorphism is not likely to predict the risk of breast cancer.

  • Objective: The aim of this Human Genome Epidemiology (HuGE) review and meta-analysis was to derive a more precise estimation of the association between p53 codon 72 polymorphism (Arg72Pro, rs1042522 G>C) and cervical cancer risk among Asians. Methods: A literature search of Pubmed, Embase, Web of Science and CBM databases from inception through June 2012 was conducted. The meta-analysis was performed using STATA 12.0 software. Crude odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to assess the strength of any association. Twenty-eight case-control studies were included with a total of 3,580 cervical cancer cases and 3,827 healthy controls. When all the eligible studies were pooled into the meta-analysis, the results showed that the Pro/Pro genotype was associated with increased risk of cervical cancer under the heterozygous model (Pro/Pro vs. Arg/Pro: OR = 1.25, 95%CI: 1.02-1.53, P= 0.005). However, no statistically significant associations were found under four other genetic models (Pro vs. Arg: OR = 0.97, 95%CI: 0.85-1.10, P= 0.624; Pro/Pro + Arg/Pro vs. Arg/Arg: OR = 0.84, 95%CI: 0.70-1.01, P= 0.058; Pro/Pro vs. Arg/Arg + Arg/Pro: OR = 1.13, 95%CI: 0.92-1.39, P= 0.242; Pro/Pro vs. Arg/Arg: OR = 0.97, 95%CI: 0.76-1.22, P= 0.765; respectively). In the subgroup analysis based on country, the Pro/Pro genotype and Pro carrier showed significant associations with increased risk of cervical cancer among Indian populations, but not among Chinese, Japanese and Korean populations. Conclusion: Results from the current meta-analysis suggests that p53 codon 72 polymorphism might be associated with increased risk of cervical cancer, especially among Indians.

  • These days, with the advent of digital broadcasting, media environment offers users an opportunity to enjoy differentiated contents in a more aggressive fashion through user-media interactions based on computer technology. In fact, the development of contents which can induce spontaneous acts from users such as outdoor ads which use certain sensors and devices and exhibition halls has been active. With the development of low-price motion recognition devices, people have been able to enjoy diverse interaction-applied media by recognizing users' motion data without body contact. In this paper, we developed an interactive media player that can recognize the user's motion and control the video in the web service environment without installing a specific program. In addition, we set user motion recognition range and developed a user motion recognition algorithm suitable for the Leap Motion equipment installed in the kiosk. The results of this study can be experienced by various interactive media such as interactive tourism, education, and movie contents in kiosks that can be installed in public places.
