Wear diagrams, which are the three dimensional representations of the dependence of the wear rate on the applied pressure and the sliding speed, were constructed with the pin on ring type wear test results using 52100 wear couples. The pressure and speed ranges from 0.45 MPa to 45.30 MPa and from 0.012 m/sec to 0.12 (0.120)m/sec, respectively. The results show the mild to severe transition, which suggests the change of the wear mechanisms as a function of the pressure and sliding speed. The SEM micrographs of the corresponding worn area shows clearly that different wear mechanisms dominate.
To assess the wear behavior of rails against subway rail car wheels, we investigate the sliding wear behavior of pins derived from two types of rails (normal rails and heat-treated rails) against a disc derived from a subway rail car wheel, using a pin-on-disc-type tribometer. We base the sliding wear test conditions on the sliding conditions for wheel flange-rail gauge corner contact. We demonstrate the remarkable transition in the wear behavior of the pins derived from the rails, from severe wear to mild wear, as a function of the sliding distance. The wear rate of the heat-treated rail material in the running-in wear region is much lower than that of the normal rail material. Furthermore, the wear rates of the pins in the running-in wear region decrease with increasing hardness and with decreasing sliding speed. However, there is little difference between the heat-treated rail pin and the normal rail pin in the wear rate in the steady-state wear region. Stricter controls on the decarburized layer beneath the surface of rails are required to reduce the wear rate in the running-in wear region.
The effect of size and volume fraction of ceramic particles, with sliding velocity on the wear properties were investigated for the metal matrix composites fabricated by the pressureless infiltration process. The metal matrix composites exhibited about 5.5 - 6 times the wear resistance compared with AC8A alloy at high sliding velocity, and by increasing the particle size and decreasing the volume fraction, the wear resistance was improved. The wear resistance of metal matrix composites and AC8A alloy exhibited different aspects. Wear loss of AC8A alloy increased with sliding velocity, linearly : whereas, metal matrix composites indicated more wear loss than AC8A alloy at the slow velocity region. However, a transition point of wear loss was found at the middle velocity region, which shows the minimum wear loss. Further, wear loss at the high velocity region exhibited nearly the same value as the slow velocity region. In terms of wear mechanism, the metal matrix composites generally exhibited abrasive wear at slow to high sliding velocity; however, AC8A alloy showed abrasive wear at low sliding velocity and adhesive and melt wear at high sliding velocity.

Wear map of silver coatings on AISI 52100 has been constructed to delineate the wear transition behavior with the change in operating conditions in various environments. Three main regimes were clearly identified: (i) elastic/plastic deformation of silver coating without failure. (ii) mild wear regime after initial failure of silver coating and (iii) severe wear regime. In the mild wear regime, the contact surfaces were covered with transfer layers of agglomerated wear particles. The transfer layer acted as a protective layer and resulted in low friction even after the initial failure of the coated films, whose characteristics were strongly dependent on both the operating and environmental conditions. Also, the existence of the critical sliding speed, above which no transfer layer was able to form, was discussed in the work.
The optimal coating condition for chrominum carbide coating was selected by Taguchi method. The wear tests with coated specimens by HVOF method were performed in the temperature to 80$0^{\circ}C$. Applied normal loads were selected to be from 8N to 30N. The worn surfaces and subsurfaces were characterized by XRD, EPMA, AES and SEM. The wear track increased with increasing applied normal load, and in terms of the temperature range from 400 to $600^{\circ}C$, below that range, the wear track increased, and above that temperature ragne, the wear track decreased. The degree of oxidation caused by the test temperature and the frictional heating was responsible to the unique high temperature wear behavior chromium carbide coatings.
The dry sliding wear properties of the sintered Cu-10 wt%Sn bronze alloys reinforced with $SiC_w$ and $SiC_p$ were investigated by a pin-on-disc wear testing machine. The worn surfaces and the cross sections of the wear specimens and the wear debris were observed by SEM to study the effect of the variation of the ceramic phase contents in the composite and the wear condition on the wear behaviors. The wear of bronze matrix was dominated by the adhesive wear. The transition from mild to severe wear was found in the bronze matrix specimens at the applied load higher than 20N where the surface delamination caused the severe wear. The addition of $SiC_w$ and $SiC_p$ reinforcements in the romposites was proved to reduce the wear rate by the matrix strengthening at the applied load higher than 20N. SiC whiskers having a large length to diameter ratio which hold the deformed matrix were effective to hinder the crack propagation near the worn surface. Thus the maximum wear resistance was obtained in the composite reinforced by $SiC_w$ at the higher applied load.
In this study, friction-wear test was carried out on the carburized layer depth of a mechanical structure steel SNCM carburized with RX and LPG for 7hrs at $930^{\circ}C$ and also the wear properties of wear loss, wear rate, coefficient of friction, friction force and friction temperature were investigated. The wear properties for carburized layer of SNCM were tested on dry condition at the room temperature by the thrust load of 49~245N range at sliding speed of 0.2m/sec and the sliding speed of 0.2~1.0m/sec range at thrust load of 98N. Wear loss on the depth of carburizing layer was increased with increasing of thrust load and sliding speed, and with decreasing of hardness. The condition of worn surfaces were showed mild wear at less than the thrust load of 98N and sliding speed of 0.6m/sec but were showed severe wear at more than 98N and 0.6m/sec. The friction load and temperature were increased with increasing of thrust load but with increasing sliding speed was appeared minimum at 0.6m/sec. With increasing thrust load the wear rate was increased and the coefficient of friction was decreased, but with increasing sliding speed the wear rate and the coefficient of friction were decreased in 0.2~0.6m/sec and increased in 0.6~1.0m/sec, therefore 0.6m/sec in this testing is a transition velocity.
Wear is affected by numerous factors-contact load, sliding velocity and distance, friction coefficient, material properties and environmental conditions. Among these wear factors, surface hardness is one of very important factors to determine wear. But surface hardness is varied by work hardening during repeated sliding contact. In this reason wear rate is increased or decreased with varying surface hardness, and transition of wear mechanism is happened. In this study, the surface hardening by accumulating residual stress was analyzed by considering the repeated sliding Hertzian contact model. The results showed that surface hardness was increased with increasing contact load, friction coefficient and contact number. And the depth of hardening layer, plastic layer and elastic layer depended upon contact load and number, but they didn't depend upon friction coefficient. The predicted surface hardness was about 1.5-1.8 times as hard as the material.

The wear behaviors of ${Si_3}{N_4}$ under the different sliding conditions were investigated. The cylinder-on-disc wear tester was used. Using the servo-metor, the sliding speed did ot alternate due to the frictional forces. Threekinds of loads and speeds were selected to watch the variation of the wear rates and the frictional forces. Also three kinds of sliding condition under a constant speed were used to see the effects of the oxidationand the abrasion. The contact pressure was more effective than the repeated cycle on the wear behavior of ${Si_3}{N_4}$. With the low loads, the effect of the asperity-failure was more dominant than that of oxidation and abrasion. As increasing the load, the effects of oxidation and abrasion were increased, but the asperity-failure effects were decreased. The wear particles destroyed the ozide layers formed on sliding surfaces. The wear rate could be decreased due to delaying the oxidation. The frictional power and the wear weight per time were usefuel to see the transition of wear.
