  • In this paper, we have proposed a design method for standardization of weapon information exchange between a weapon control computer of guided missile system and a high echelon command and control system. Because the weapon control computer based on diverse combat platforms is operated with several kinds of a high echelon system, it is necessary to provide a standardized design method for weapon information exchange between mutual system. In fact, it is possible to standardize a interface design specification of weapon information message because weapon information message is closely related to standard tactical data link message. It is essential that the interface design specification of weapon information is submitted to that of tactical data link information. It seems that this interface design specification is very useful in development process of the future weapon system.

  • Availability is one of the important factor for developing weapon system, because it indicates the mission capability and sustainable life cycle management of weapon system. Recently, as weapon system becomes more advanced and more complex, availability estimation becomes more important to reduce the life cycle cost of weapon system. Modeling and simulation(M&S) is useful method to describe the availability of complex weapon system applying operational environment and maintenance plan. Especially agent based model(ABM) has the strength to describe interactions between agents and environments in complex system. Therefore, this paper presents the availability estimation of weapon system using agent based model. The sample data of part list and reliability analysis is applied to build availability estimation model. User agent and mechanic agent are developed to illustrate the behavior of operation and maintenance using formal specification. Storage reliability is applied to describe failure of each parts. The experimental result shows that this model is quite useful to estimate availability of weapon system. This model may estimate more reasonable availability, if full scale data of weapon system and real field data of operation is provided.

  • Since military weapon accidents or breakdowns are directly linked to enormous damage, it is important to analyze the causes of weapons system accidents. Recently, in the defense sector, there have been cases in which budget has been saved through analysis of the causes of frequent breakdowns and improvement activities that have occurred in the process of operating weapon systems since 2015. But due to the nature of the defense sector, it is not easy to collect data and studies on weapons system accidents have been insufficient so far. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the causes and types of military weapon accidents by collecting military weapon accident data for military weapon systems and analyzing trends by weapon system classification through the analysis process. It analyzes statistically and visually through social network analysis, NodeXL. It is expected that this study will help improve the stability of the weapon system by reducing the number of military weapon accidents and failures.

  • The DMSMS(Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Material Shortage) can occur in every weapon systems and especially, this phenomenon frequently occurs in electronic parts. But we have no DMSMS-related directives, guidelines, regulations and activities, so we have some difficulties in operating weapon systems. In this paper, we review the reality of DMSMS in our weapon systems and then suggest effective alternatives to reduce the risk of DMSMS for weapon systems.

  • This research deals with the weapon system RAM which is the reliability, availability and maintainability for weapon systems. This weapon system RAM is one of very important factors because it is related to the life cycle cost and combat readiness of weapon systems. Therefore, in this research we introduce the weapon system RAM and analyze the problems of weapon system RAM management during system life cycle including acquisition period. Finally we suggest an alternative to improve the weapon system RAM in various agencies which are the department of defense and army headquarter level, etc., in the process of defense acquisition.

  • Due to the evolution of war fields to the net-centric one, weapon systems have become very complex in terms of both mission capability and implementation scales. In particular, the net-centric war field is characterized by a set of interconnected and independently operable weapon systems. As such, the individual weapon systems are required to meet the interoperability and thus, assuring it has been becoming more crucial even in the early stage of development. Furthermore, the ever-growing complexity of the weapon systems has attracted a great deal of attention on the safety issues in the operation and development of weapon systems. The objective of the study is on how to assure the interoperability for safety-critical weapon systems while maintaining system complexity. To do so, the approach taken in the paper is to consider the interoperability from the early stage of the development. Specifically, the required functions to satisfy the interoperability are developed first. The functions are then analyzed in order to link the safety requirements to the reliability evaluation, which results in the study of quantifying the effects of the safety requirements on the system as a whole. As a result, we have developed a methodology and procedure on how to assure interoperability while applying the safety requirements in the weapon systems development.

  • Since the technology of anti-ship missiles has advanced rapidly, defending battleships from the threat of anti-ship missiles is a crucial factor for the survival of warships. In this paper, we analyze the performance of an anti-ship missile defense system whose name is Close-In-Weapon-System. We show the survival probability of a warship equipped with the Close-In-Weapon-System as the number of anti-ship missiles attacking the warship varies. Because of the complex and dynamic operational characteristics surrounding the Close-In-Weapon-System such as speed of missiles, different range of an individual weapon in the weapon system, and the continuous change of the kill probability of the missiles corresponding to the distance of missiles from ships, few work has been done for the performance of Close-In-Weapon-System. We present a model to incorporate all the dynamic characteristics of the system using absorbing Markov Chain. With our results, we expect commanders of warships equipped with Close-In-Weapon-System to be provided with more helpful information on how to deal with the anti-ship missiles.

  • Purpose: Weapon systems have the long life cycle unlike the consumer product. Thus, the reliability of weapon system is improved during the life cycle through the steady technical change. In this paper, we deal with the method of evaluating the reliability of weapon system with the field failure data. Methods: Especially, we present how to gather the field failure data and evaluate the reliability through the case of K-series weapon system. To evaluate reliability, the reliability growth model is used and the result is discussed. Results: It is steadily improved the reliability of K-series weapon system deployed from 2000 to 2004. The frequency of the failures that affect the mission is largely reduced and MTBMF(mean time between mission failure) is also improved. Conclusion: We can guess the trend of the reliability of weapon system with the field data through this study. Furthermore, it can be used to improve the reliability and make maintenance policy.

  • Directed energy weapon enables to radiate the concentrated energy so as to result in distraction and overload of the target electronics. Analysis on effectiveness of weapon system can be important consideration in order to determine performance and design weapon system. In this paper, air defense weapon system, which is one of directed energy weapon system is studied. In order to analyze the effectiveness, the reflector antenna with high power circularly polarized horn antenna is designed, and power density in axial effective area is simulated and calculated using Friis formula. Through the study, the validity of antenna system is verified, and the effectiveness of directed energy weapon system on the target is evaluated.
