SEMI-ANALYTIC MODELS FOR ELECTRON ACCELERATION IN WEAK ICM SHOCKS

  • We propose semi-analytic models for the electron momentum distribution in weak shocks that accounts for both in situ acceleration and re-acceleration through diffusive shock acceleration (DSA). In the former case, a small fraction of incoming electrons is assumed to be reflected at the shock ramp and pre-accelerated to the so-called injection momentum, pinj, above which particles can diffuse across the shock transition and participate in the DSA process. This leads to the DSA power-law distribution extending from the smallest momentum of reflected electrons, pref, all the way to the cutoff momentum, peq, constrained by radiative cooling. In the latter case, fossil electrons, specified by a power-law spectrum with a cutoff, are assumed to be re-accelerated from pref up to peq via DSA. We show that, in the in situ acceleration model, the amplitude of radio synchrotron emission depends strongly on the shock Mach number, whereas it varies rather weakly in the re-acceleration model. Considering the rather turbulent nature of shocks in the intracluster medium, such extreme dependence for the in situ acceleration might not be compatible with the relatively smooth surface brightness of observed radio relics.

FINE SEGMENTATION USING GEOMETRIC ATTRACTION-DRIVEN FLOW AND EDGE-REGIONS

  • A fine segmentation algorithm is proposed for extracting objects in an image, which have both weak boundaries and highly non-convex shapes. The image has simple background colors or simple object colors. Two concepts, geometric attraction-driven flow (GADF) and edge-regions are combined to detect boundaries of objects in a sub-pixel resolution. The main strategy to segment the boundaries is to construct initial curves close to objects by using edge-regions and then to make a curve evolution in GADF. Since the initial curves are close to objects regardless of shapes, highly non-convex shapes are easily detected and dependence on initial curves in boundary-based segmentation algorithms is naturally removed. Weak boundaries are also detected because the orientation of GADF is obtained regardless of the strength of boundaries. For a fine segmentation, we additionally propose a local region competition algorithm to detect perceptible boundaries which are used for the extraction of objects without visual loss of detailed shapes. We have successfully accomplished the fine segmentation of objects from images taken in the studio and aphids from images of soybean leaves.

  • To study various relaxation phenomena of $Pb(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3$ relaxor ferroelectrics, weak electric-field properties as well as strong electric-field properties were investigated in the frequency range from 1 Hz to 100 kHz. The temperature dependence of the dielectric properties were measured under the low electric-field of 1 V/mm in the phase transition temperature range from $-40^{\circ}C$ to $90^{\circ}C$. The dielectric properties obtained from the slope of the dielectric hysteresis loop and the temperature dependence of the pyroelectric properties were also investigated. When fitting all the experimental data with the Vogel-Fulcher relation, experimental data were agreed with the equation closely. Thus, dielectric relaxations could be modeled by the Vogel-Fulcher relation not only for the low electric-field but also for the high electric-field.

MHD WAVE ENERGY FLUXES GENERATED FROM CONVECTION ZONES OF LATE TYPE STARS

  • An attempt has been made to examine the characteristics of acoustic and MHD waves generated in stellar convection zones($4000\;K\;{\leq}\;T_{eff}\;{\leq}\;7000\;K$, $3\;{\leq}\;\log\;g\;{\leq}\;4.5$). With the use of wave generation theories formulated for acoustic waves by Stein (1967), for MHD body waves by Musielak and Rosner (1987, 1988) and for MHD tube waves by Musielak et al.(l989a, 1989b), the energy fluxes are calculated and their dependence on effective temperature, surface gravity and megnetic field strength are analyzed by optimization techniques. In computing magneto-convection models, the effect of magnetic fields on the efficiency of convection has been taking into account by extrapolating it from Yun's sunspot models(1968; 1970). Our study shows that acoustic wave fluxes are dominant in F and G stars, while the MHD waves dominant in K and M stars, and that the MHD wave fluxes vary as $T_{eff}^4{\sim}T_{eff}^7$ in contrast to the acoustic fluxes, as $T_{eff}^{10}$. The gravity dependence, on the other hand, is found to be relatively weak; the acoustic wave fluxes ${\varpropto}\;g^{-0.5}$, the longitudinal tube wave fluxes ${\varpropto}\;g^{0.3}$ and the transverse tube wave fluxes ${\varpropto}\;g^{0.3}$. In the case of the MHD body waves their gravity dependence is found to be nearly negligible. Finally we assesed the computed energy fluxes by comparing them with the observed fluxes $F_{ob}$ of CIV(${\lambda}1549$) lines and soft X-rays for selected main sequence stars. When we scaled the corrected wave fluxes down to $F_{ob}$, it is found that these slopes are almost in line with each other.

  • In this paper, we consider the discrete-time known signal detection problem under the presence of additive noise exhibiting weak dependence. We derive the locally optimum, memoryless, and one-memory detector test statistics under a seakly dependent noise model. The performance characteristics of the one-memory detector can achieve almost optimum performance at the expense of only one memory unit under the weakly dependent noise model.

Performance Analysis of SOFC/MGT Hybrid System

  • A performance analysis of a SOFC/MGT hybrid system has been carried out for concept design. Thermo-dynamic models for each component being able to describe electrochemical characteristics and heat and mate-rial balance are proposed. Estimated is the power capacity of a SOFC suitable for the hybrid operation with a 5kW class MGT. Effects of current density and operating pressure are also investigated. Electric efficiency showed weak dependence on operating pressure and current density. It is desirable that the SOFC operates at high current density in manufacturing cost's point of view though operating with high current density slightly decreases the electric efficiency find specific power.

  • The investigations included the measurements of volume currents and also internal space charges on epoxy samples of mm thicknesses. The current versus time relations were shown to correspond well with classical forms of dielectric response such as the Curie-von Schweidler model. After the time transient, near steady currents were extremely small and exhibited a significant temperature dependence, similar in relation to the Poole-Frenkel hoping transport model. Equivalent resistances were on the order of $10^{19}$ ohms and represent very weak charge transport. Electrically stimulated acoustic waves were used to quantify the small internal charges that would accumulate within the epoxy. There was a notable homocharge near both anode and cathode. The dielectric response and the internal charge were related to show a consistent model for charge transport within unfilled epoxy.

Wheastone-bridge type MR sensors of Si(001)/NiO(300 $\AA$)/NiFe bilayer system (Si(001)/NiO(300$\AA$)/NiFe계 휘스톤 브리지형 자기저항소자)

  • There is great interest in developing magnetoresistance(MR) sensor, using ferromagnetic, electrically non-magnetic conducting and antiferromagnetic films, especially for the use in weak magnetic fields. Here, we report single and Wheatstone-bridge type of MR sensors made in Si(001)/HiO(300$\AA$)/NiFe bilayers. Angular dependence of MR profiles was measured in Si(001)/NiO(300$\AA$)/NiFe(450$\AA$) films as a function of an angle between current and applied field direction, also, linearity was determined. AMR characteristics of single MR sensors was well explained with single domain model. Good linearity in 45$^{\circ}$Wheatstone-bridge type of MR sensors consisting of 4 single MR sensors made in Si(001)/NiO(300$\AA$)/NiFe(450$\AA$) was shown in the range of about $\pm$50 Oe.

  • In this paper, we developed visual tracking algorithm using double active bar. The active bar model to represent the object can reduce the search space of energy surface and better performance than those of snake model. However, the contour will not find global equilibrium when driving force caused by image may be weak. To overcome this problem. Double active bar is proposed for finding the global minimum point without any dependence on initialization. To achieve the goal, an deformable model with two initial contours in attempted to search for a global minimum within two specific initial contours. This approach improve the performance of finding the contour of target. To evaluate the performance, some experiments are executed. We can achieved the good result for tracking a object on noisy image.

Factors Affecting Ambient Monoterpene Levels in a Pine Forest

  • The concentration levels of monoterpenes, including ${\alpha}$- and ${\beta}$-pinene, were measured in a pine forest in Florida, USA, over about one year. Based on this measurement data, the current study then investigated the factors affecting the environmental behavior of monoterpenes. Despite a moderately weak temperature variability in the study area, the temperature dependence of the concentration variations was still evident. The concentrations of the two pinenes were significantly affected by changes in the air temperature, as indicated by strong correlations with temperature. A close relation among the measured parameters was also found between the ${\beta}$-pinene and ozone concentrations, which is also in line with previous findings from other studies. In addition, it was interesting to note that the ${\beta}$/${\alpha}$ pinene concentration ratio exhibited a strong inverse correlation to temperature, with the seasonal mean ranging from 0.51(summer) to 0.93(winter). Accordingly, the current results indicate that, in a forest environment, the major terpene species concentrations are affected by both meteorological conditions and chemical reactions.
