The shock wave is deformed and the vortex is elongated simultaneously during the shock-vortex interaction. More precisely, the shock wave is deformed to a S-shape, consisting of a leading shock and a lagging shock by which the corresponding local vortex flows are accelerated and decelerated, respectively: the vortex flow swept by the leading shock is locally expanded and the one behind the lagging shock is locally compressed. As the leading shock escapes the vortex in the order of microseconds, the expanded flow region is quickly changed to a compression region due to the implosion effect. An induced shock is developed here and propagated against the vortex flow. This happens for a strong vortex because the tangential flow velocity of the vortex core is high enough to make the induced-shock wave speed supersonic relative to the vortex flow. For a weak shock, the vortex is basically subsonic and the induced shock wave is absent. For a vortex of intermediate strength, an induced shock wave is developed in the supersonic region but dissipated prematurely in the subsonic region. We have expounded these three shock-vortex interaction patterns that depend on the vortex flow regime using a third-order ENO method and numerical shadowgraphs.
In this paper, the wave-induced motion characteristics of a floating pendulor are investigated numerically. A floating pendulor is a movable-body-type wave energy converter. This device consists of three main parts (floater, pendulum, and damping plates). In order to obtain the hydrodynamic coefficients and wave exciting forces acting on floating bodies, a higher-order boundary element method (HOBEM) using a wave Green function is applied to the present problems. The hinged motion of a pendulum is simulated by applying the penalty method. In order to obtain a more realistic motion response for a pendulor, numerical body damping is included. First, the wave force and motion characteristics of just a floater are observed with respect to different shape parameters. Then, a coupled analysis of a floater, pendulum, and damping plates is carried out. The relative pitch velocity and wave forces acting on the floating pendulor are compared with those of a fixed pendulor.

In this study, a relationship between small-strain shear modulus ($G_{max}$) and overconsolidation ratio (OCR) based on shear wave velocity ($V_S$) measurement was established to identify the stress history of centrifuge model ground. A centrifuge test was conducted in various centrifugal acceleration levels including loading and unloading sequences to cause various stress histories on centrifuge model ground. The $V_S$ and vertical effective stress were measured at each level of acceleration. Then, a sensitivity analysis was conducted using testing data to ensure the suitability of OCR function for the tested cohesionless soils and found that OCR can be estimated based on $V_S$ measurements irrespective of normally-consolidated or overconsolidated loading conditions. Finally, the developed $G_{max}$-OCR relationship was applied to centrifuge models constructed and tested under various induced stress-history conditions. Through a series of tests, it was concluded that the induced stress history on centrifuge model by compaction, g-level variation, and past overburden load can be analysed quantitatively, and it is convinced that the OCR evaluation technique will contribute to better interpret the centrifuge test results.
Laboratory tests have revealed that the liquefaction resistance of sands depends strongly upon the degree of saturation, which is expressed in terms of the pore pressure coefficient, B. The velocity of compression waves(i.e. P-waves), which have been known to be influenced largely by the degree of saturation and can be measured conveniently in the field, appears as an indicator of saturation. In this paper, the Stokoe type torsional shear(TS) testing equipment is modified to saturate the specimen and measure the velocities of P-wave and S-wave and pore pressure buildup. The velocities of P-wave and S-wave for Toyoura sand from Japan is measured and compared at the various B-value (degree of saturation) which are partially saturated to fully saturated conditions. Additionally, the variation of the pore water pressure induced during undrained TS tests at the various B-value is measured and analyzed.
This experimental study investigated the flow characteristics for regular waves passing a rectangular floating structure in a two-dimensional wave tank. The particle image velocimetry (PIV) was employed to obtain the velocity field in the vicinity of the structure. The phase average was used to extract the mean flow and turbulence property from repeated instantaneous PIV velocity profiles. The mean velocity field represented the vortex generation and evolution on both sides of the structure. The turbulence properties, including the turbulence length scale and the turbulent kinetic energy budget were investigated to characterize the flow interaction between the regular wave and the structure. The results shaw the vortex generated near the structure corners, which are known as the eddy-making damping or viscous damping. However, the vortex induced by the wave is longer than the roll natural period of the structure, which presents the phenomena opposing the roll damping effect; that is, the vortex may increase the roll motion under the wave condition longer than the roll natural period.
Microcracks in rock materials, whether natural or induced, provide useful information on the engineering performance of in situ rockmasses. A population of preferentially oriented microcracks has observable effects on the physical properties of a rockmass, but their effects may not be evident if the rock material is highly anisotropic due to other causes. An experimental program was undertaken to investigate the effect of rock fabrics on the physical properties of rock materials. In this study, anisotropy in the circumferential wave velocity and the direction of induced fractures under axial point loading were measured. Rock specimens (NX-size) of the leucocractic Pocheon granite were cored from rock blocks, retaining the relative directions of each specimen. Another set of specimens was prepared from the rock cores of the same meterial, obtained in the field. The master orientation line (MOL) was set to be the representative direction of the microcracks in the specimen. Variation of the circumferential wave velocity of each specimen was then measured along the core, keeping the MOL as reference. The direction of the minimum wave velocity was nearly perpendicular to the direction of the MOL. Coring of smaller-sized (EX-size), concentric specimens from the NX specimens were then followed, and axial point loading was applied. The direction of induced fractures due to axial point loading was closely related to the MOL direction, confirming the prior test result.

In order to analyze the quantitative characteristics of acoustic streaming, experimental setup of 3-D stereoscopic PIV(particle imaging velocimetry) was designed and quantitative ultrasonic flow fields in the gap between the ultrasonic vibrator and heat source were measured. Utilizing acoustic streaming induced by ultrasonic vibration, surface temperature drop of cooling object was also measured. The study on smart cooling method by acoustic streaming induced by ultrasonic vibration was performed due to the empirical relations of flow pattern, average flow velocity, different gaps, and enhancement on cooling rates in the gap. Average velocity fields and maximum acoustic streaming velocity in the open gap between the stationary cylindrical heat source and ultrasonic vibrator were experimentally measured at no vibration, resonance, and non-resonance. It was clearly observed that the enhancement of cooling rates existed owing to the acoustic air flow in the gap at resonance and non-resonance induced by ultrasonic vibration. The ultrasonic wave propagating into air in the gap creates steady-state secondary eddy called acoustic streaming which enhances heat transfer from the heat source to encompassing air. The intensity of the acoustic streaming induced by ultrasonic vibration experimentally depended upon the gap between the heat source and ultrasonic vibrator. The ultrasonic vibration at resonance caused the increase of the acoustic streaming velocity and convective heat transfer augmentation when the flow fields by 3D stereoscopic PIV and temperature drop of the heat source were measured experimentally. The acoustic streaming velocity of air enhancement on cooling rates in the gap is maximal when the gap agrees with the multiples of half wavelength of the ultrasonic wave, which is specifically 12 mm.

This paper examines the wave velocity of protein microtubules using a elasticity model that incorporates body forces, based on the structure of these hollow cylinder-like structures., the governing equations are analytically solved to determine how the body forces effect the wave velocity. To analyze the microtubule waves velocity, use microtubules with simply supported ends. The electric field of a dipole vibrating at the same frequency as microtubule vibrations approximates the electric field generated by the rhythmic motion of every charge. The numerical findings for the three modes of frequencies in the longitudinal, radial, and torsional directions for the current conditions are compared with the results of previous calculations.
Boryung sandstone and Yeosan marble were thermally cracked at predetermined temperatures ranging $200^{\circ}C$ to $600^{\circ}C$. Optical microscopy was utilized to observe thermally induced cracks and physical properties such as specific gravity, effective porosity k elastic wave velocity were measured. Optical observations show that all crystal boundaries of Yeosan marble heated to $600^{\circ}C$ open and new intracrystalline cracks seem to be occurred in all crystals, but developments of thermal cracks in Boryung sandstone heated to $600^{\circ}C$ are not pronounced. From $200^{\circ}C$ upwards, effective porosity and elastic wave velocity of Yeosan marble are sharpely increased, whereas effective porosity and elastic wave velocity of Boryung sandstone are weakly increased.

When waves propagating over an underwater shoal break at the top of the shoal, wave heights are drastically decreased in the downstream breaking zone, but a secondary current shooting downstream with strong velocity can be induced by the breaking waves themselves. In the case that an offshore structure is placed in the breaking zone, the estimation of wave farce purely based on the visible wave height may cause an under-design of the structure. Thus, for the safe design of the structure, the breaking wave induced current should be necessarily considered in the comprehensive estimation of design load. In the present study, Boussinesq equation model to calculate the wave height distribution and breaking wave induced current was set up and applied to the scheme of a hydraulic model test previously undertaken. Based on the results of the Boussinesq model, fluid forces acting on the model structure were calculated and compared with the experimental results. The importance of the breaking wave induced current was quantitatively assessed by comparing fluid forces with or without current.
