  • The control performances for active re-reflecting wave control suggested in the previous paper have been verified in cases of regular and irregular waves in a real two dimensional wave basin. For regular waves, the control performances are investigated in terms of reflection coefficients, expected amplitudes of propagating waves and wave absorbing capabilities after cessation of wave generation, compared with those of no-control cases. For irregular waves similar verification procedures were adopted. Though there are certain constraints due to the geometrical non-linearity of wave maker and certain nonlinear characteristics due to the near field and gravity waves these experiments show that the control logic could be useful in realizing re-reflecting wave control in conditions of real wave basin.

  • For the efficient management of the diagnostic x-ray equipment, a nation-wide inspection of hospitals was performed by an inspection institute in Taejon in the first half of 1997. Among those hospitals inspected, 28 equipments(machines) which were over 500 mA were randomly selected according to their characteristics : 7 condenser type x-ray equipments, 7 three control phase of full wave rectification of type remote control x-ray equipments, 7 single phase of full wave rectification type for general radiography equipments, and 7 single phase of full wave rectification type of R/F equipments. We obtained the following results by conducting the experiment based on the efficiency of the equipments mentioned above. 1) When the equipments are analyzed, 2 out of 7 single phase of full wave rectification type of general radiography equipments(28.6%), 3 out of 7 single phase of full wave rectification type of R/F equipments(42.9%), 5 out of 7 three phase of full wave rectification type remote of control x-ray equipments(71.4%), and 4 out of 7 condenser type of x-ray equipments(57.1%) showed suitability. It proves the superiority of the three phase of full wave rectification type of remote control x-ray equipments. 2) From the overall analysis, only about 50% of the equipments(suitability of 14 out of 28) maintain the efficient management. Therefore, maintenance management of equipments is more necessary. If the efficiency of the x-ray equipment is uniformly maintained and managed to prevent the breakdown(trouble) beforehand especially through the continuous inspection of tube voltage, tube current, exposure time, and collimator, the financial loss and exposure dose to the patient, as well as the workers engaged in radiation, can be reduced for better medical service.

  • This paper reports a novel mobile-type wave energy harvesting system. The proposed system adopts a wave glider's propulsion mechanism. A wave glider's blades were mounted on a circular layout and generated a rotational motion. Combining the wave converting system with the wave glider, a mobile floating-type robotic buoy system was developed. It enabled the relocation of the buoy position, as well as station-keeping for long term operation. It had a small size and could efficiently harvest wave energy. A feasibility study and modeling were carried out, and a prototype system was constructed. Various tank tests were performed to optimize the proposed wave energy harvesting system.

  • Submerged structures such as low-crested breakwaters and artificial reefs have been commonly used for coastal protection. In this study, two-dimensional laboratory experiments were conducted in a wave flume to investigate the wave transmission phenomena of permeable type submerged structures armored by Tetrapods. Different cases of the experimental conditions were included by relative crest depth, relative freeboard, relative crest width, wave steepness and so on. An empirical formula from the experimental data was proposed to predict the wave transmission coefficients over various specifications and structural designs of the permeable type submerged structure. The proposed formula successfully predicted the wave transmission coefficients. In this study, the proposed empirical formula of the wave transmission over the submerged structure was improved from the existing formula.

  • Large offshore structure are to be considered for oil storage facilities , marine terminals, power plants, offshore airports, industrial complexes and recreational facilities. Some of them have already been constructed. Some of the envisioned structures will be of the artificial-island type, in which the bulk of structures may act as significant barriers to normal waves and the prediction of the wave intensity will be of importance for design of structure. The present study deals wave scattering problem combining reflection and diffraction of waves due to the shape of the impermeable rigid upright structure, subject to the excitation of a plane simple harmonic wave coming from infinity. In this study, a finite difference technique for the numerical solution is applied to the boundary integral equation obtained for wave potential. The numerical solution is verified with the analytic solution. The model is applied to various structures, such as the detached breakwater (3L${\times}$0.1L), bird-type breakwater(318L${\times}$0.17L), cylinder-type and crescent -type structure (2.89L${\times}$0.6L, 0.8L${\times}$0.26L).The result are presented in wave height amplification factors and wave height diagram. Also, the amplification factors across the structure or 1 or 2 wavelengths away from the structure are compared with each given case. From the numerical simulation for the various boundary types of structure, we could figure out the transformation pattern of waves and predict the waves and predict the wave intensity in the vicinity of large artificial structures.

  • In the design of mixed type breakwater, the most important factor to be considered is the wave pressure. In particular, the standing wave pressure has a significant effect on the vertical wall breakwater or mixed type breakwater. Many wave pressure formulas were developed and the Goda's formula[1] was very frequently used among them by the coastal engineers due to its simplicity and accuracy. (omitted)

  • Acoustic and pressure type seabed installed wave sensors have advantage in observing long period infra-gravity wave and tsunami, while buoy type wave gauges which measure acceleration of the moored buoy motion are not able to detect long period waves. That's why most of the Japanese coastal wave observation sensors are seabed installed typed ones. Nationwide Japanese coastal wave observation systems with seabed installed sensors are gradually clarifying long-period tsunami profiles and infra-gravity wave characteristics (Nagai.et.al., 1996, 1997,2000,2002a,2002b). • In this study, The experimental open-tube-type and close-tube-type thermoacoustic refrigerator were constructed. The resonant characteristics of a thermoacoustic refrigerator were investigated. In order to determine the optimum resonant tube length and frequency, We changed the length of resonant tube from 400mm to 850mm and the frequency from 100Hz to 1000Hz. In case of first harmonic, the temperature difference of open-tube-type (1/4 wave) refrigerator was $41^{\circ}C$(resonator length :500mm). The temperature difference of close-tube-type (1/2 wave) refrigerator was $43^{\circ}C$(resonator length :850mm). In this experiments, the experimental 1/2 wave refrigerator is slightly cooler than the experimental l/4 wave refrigerator.
