  • This paper deals with the treatment of the open boundary in two-dimensional free-surface wave problems. Two numerical schemes are investigated for the implementation of the open boundary condition. One is to add the artificial damping term to the dynamic free-surface boundary condition, in which the determination of suitable damping coefficient and the damping zone is the most important. The other is a modified Orlanski's method, which is known to be very useful for the uni-directional waves. Using these two schemes, numerical tests have been conducted for a few typical free-surface wave problems. To obtain the numerical solution of the free-surface boundary value problem, the fundamental source-distribution method is used and the fully nonlinear free-surface boundary conditions are applied. The computed results are presented in comparison with those of others for the proof of practicality of these two schemes.

  • Recently, much attention has been given to plasma production under liquid and its applications [1]. However, most of plasma production techniques reported so far utilize high voltage dc, ac, rf or microwave power [2], where damage to discharge electrodes and small discharge volume are remained issues. As an alternative of plasma production method under liquid, we have proposed pulsed microwave excited plasma using slot antenna, where damage to the slot electrode can be minimized and plasma volume can be increased. We have also reported improvement of treatment efficiency with use of reduced-pressure condition during the discharge [3]. To realize low pressure conditions in liquid, various alternative technique can be considered. One possible technique is simultaneous injection of microwave power and ultrasonic wave. Ultrasonic wave induces pressure fluctuation with the wave propagation and is so far used for cavitation production in the water. We propose utilization of reduced pressure induced by ultrasonic cavitation for improvement of the plasma production. Correlation between the plasma production and the ultrasonic power will be discussed.

  • The purpose of these experiments is to improve the perm techniques which are fast growing and changing in our life style, for customer satisfaction and to use as basic data for academic purpose through comparing between two methods which are the new permanent wave treatment and the old one. I classified the hair samples to three kinds, which are healthy, normal, and damaged hair. This study is focused on the top part of hair sample which is damaged by strong and long-time sunshine. To get the best result, I use the scanning electron microscope (JSM-5200) as main device of these experiments. The followings are the results of these experiments. First, the new way of permanent wave technique has much more damage on hair than the old one. Second, There are big differences of damaging in this study. The harmed hair has worse result than the healthier hair.

  • This paper aimed to study what the influences of orthodontic treatment of pronunciation are. We compared the duration and the acoustic wave patterns of Korean consonants pronounced by a control group with those of a patient who had his four premolars extracted and had been given orthodontic treatment The results were as follows : 1. Compared to the control group, the treatment group had a longer duration time of consonant pronunciation for all consonants but "ㅅ(s)" and "ㅌ($(t^h)$" in CV(consonant-vowel) pairs. Especially in the case of "ㅈ(dz)", "ㅆ$({\varphi}^h)$" for CV-pairs, and "ㄷ(d)" in VCV(vowel-consonant-vowel) clusters, the duration of consonant sound showed a sharp contrast between the control group and the treatment group. 2. There were clear differences in the acoustic wave patterns of "ㅉ(ts)", "ㅆ$({\varphi}^h)$" and "ㅊ$(c^h)$", all of which were in VCV-clusters. The acoustic wave pattern of "ㅉ(ts)", when pronounced by the treatment group, was stronger than the control group's. This phenomenon was most remarkable in the transitive section where the "ㅉ(ts)" sound flowed into the following vowel. When a preceding vowel shifted to the consonant "ㅆ$({\varphi}^h)$", the attack property of the appeared clearly in the acoustic waves of the treament group, while in the control group the starting point of consonart was indistinctive. Consonant duration for the treatment group was longer, and the appearance of a zero crossing point in the acoustic wave was more frequent. In the case of "ㅊ$(c^h)$", the treatment group produced a strong acoustic wave, and the property of aspiration was obvious in it. 3. When the treatment group pronounced "ㄷ(d)" and "ㅈ(dz)" in CV-pairs, the acoustic-wave was similar to that of aspirated "ㅌ$(t^h)$" and "ㅊ$(c^h)$". 4. The aspirated "ㅌ$(t^h)$" and "ㅊ$(c^h)$" pronounced by the treatment group showed the stronger airstream and acoustic wave form.

  • In this study, we investigated the effect of natural vegetable treatment agent on the bleaching and damage of human hair during permanent wave formation. The vegetable treatment agent was prepared by fermenting the mixture of tea leaves (10g), black rice (100g), black bean (100g), corn (100g), malt (50g), and water(500g) at room temperature for 1 week. The degree of bleaching and damage was checked by Munsell value 'L' and morphological changes of hair in FE-SEM. When the hair was bleached, the Munsell value 'L' was almost same regardless of adding the vegetable treatment to the bleaching solution. But when the hair was permanently waved, the curl formation ability was high and the damage was low in the case of adding the vegetable treatment. This means that the vegetable treatment covers the scale of hair and protects the hair from the chemicals.

  • Ultrasonic treatment of KOCC was tried to explore the possibility for improvement of KOCC quality as a raw material for making industrial packaging paper and paperboard. The effect of pH, stock consistencies and treatment times on the ultrasonic response of KOCC were investigated. WRV, apparent density, tensile index and burst index were improved as pH of KOCC slurry is increased. However highest tear index and stiffness were obtained at pH 8. It was also found that the highest WRV and strength properties could be obtained at 0.5% of KOCC consistency during ultrasonic treatment. WRV and most strength properties were improved with ultrasonic treatment time. It was found that ultrasonic treatment can be used as a useful mean for KOCC modificaton.

  • The fluctuation of inlet flow to a water treatment plant makes a serious problem that it can change the outlet flowrate from each process abruptly. Since it takes very short time for the surface wave occurred from the fluctuation of inlet flow to reach the latter processes, it is impossible for operators to cope with that stably. In order to investigate the characteristics of hydraulic behavior for rectangular sedimentation basin in water treatment plant, CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation were employed. From the results of both CFD simulations, it was confirmed that time taken for the follow-up processes by the fluctuation in intake well can be estimated by the propagation velocity of surface waves. Also, it takes very short time for the surface wave occurred from the fluctuation of inlet flow to reach the latter processes. In the case of inlet flowerate being increased sharply, local velocity within sedimentation basin appeared as wave pattern and increased due to convection current. Also, it could be observed that vortex made local velocity in the vicinity of bottom rise.

  • This study aimed to describe the outcomes of the GentleWave system (GW) (Sonendo) on root canal treatment. Published articles were collected from scientific databases (MEDLINE/PubMed platform, Web of Science, Scopus, Science Direct and Embase). A total of 24 studies were collected from August/2014 to July/2021, 20 in vitro and 4 clinical. GW System was not associated with extrusion of the irrigant, promoted faster organic dissolution than conventional syringe irrigation (CSI), passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) continuous ultrasonic irrigation (CUI) and EndoVac, reduced more bacterial DNA and biofilm than PUI and CUI, promoted higher penetration of sodium hypochlorite into dentinal tubules than PUI and CUI in vitro, and removed more intracanal medication than CSI and PUI. GW was able to remove pulp tissue and calcifications. Moreover, its ability to remove hard-tissue debris and smear layer was better than that of CSI, and its ability to remove root canal obturation residues was lower or similar to that of PUI, and similar to that of CSI and EndoVac. Regarding root canal obturation of minimally instrumented molar canals, GW was associated with high-quality obturation. Clinically, the success rate of endodontic treatment using GW was 97.3%, and the short-term postoperative pain in the GW group was not different from CSI. Further research, mainly clinical, is needed to establish whether GW has any advantages over other available irrigation methods.

  • A portable clip-type pulsimeter equipped with a magnetic sensing Hall device has been developed to raise the accuracy of oriental disease diagnosis and therapy by convergence of magnetism and oriental medicine. To improve accuracy and reliability of conventional pulsimeter due to subjective analysis of the pulse wave and measuring position dependency of the arterial pulse sensor, the fuzzy algorithm was applied to analyze the strong- and weak-pulse wave symptom. Optimal time for electronic acupuncture was calculated using fuzzy rules and interference were drawn from objective data in view of pre-treatment. Moreover, the electrical characteristics of the pain parts that respond to acupuncture point were applied in view of post-treatment to propose the scientific pulse wave algorithm and simulation experiment.

  • A two-dimensional time-domain, potential-theory-based fully nonlinear numerical wave tank (NWT) was developed by using boundary element method and the mixed Eulerian-Lagrangian (MEL) approach for free-surface node treatment. The NWT was applied to prediction of primary wave energy conversion efficiency of a bottom-mounted oscillating water column (OWC) wave power device. The nonlinear free-surface condition inside the chamber was specially devised to represent the pneumatic pressure due to airflow velocity and viscous energy loss at the chamber entrance due to wave column motion. The newly developed NWT technique was verified through comparison with given experimental results. The maximum energy extraction was estimated with various chamber-air duct volume ratios.
