  • An ultrasonic testing uses the directivity of the ultrasonic wave which propagates in one direction. The directivity is expressed as the relationship between the propagate direction and its sound pressure. The directivity of ultrasonic wave is related to determination of testing sensitivity, scanning pitch and defect location. This paper investigated the directivity of ultrasonic wave, which scattered from slit defect located in heat-affected zone (HAZ) in butt joint using visualization method. The directivity of shear waves scattered from slit defect were different according to probe direction (far defect, near defect) and probe position (forward movement, maximum echo position, backward movement). The difference of directivity of reflection wave was existed between 2 MHz and 4 MHz angle probes. In the case of 2 MHz angle probe, the directivity of reflection wave was appeared sharp form because of the relation wave length and defect size.

  • Ultrasonic testing uses the directivity of the ultrasonic wave, which propagates in on direction. The directivity is expressed as the relationship between the propagate direction and its sound pressure. The directivity of an ultrasonic wave is related to the choice of probe arrangement, testing sensitivity and scanning pitch and correct measurement of defect size and location. This paper describes on the directivity measurement of ultrasonic wave using the visualization method. The directivity of shear wave emitted from the angle beam transducer were constant during propagation. The difference of directivity was existed between 2 MHz and 4 MHz angle beam transducers. When these experimental results were compared with the theory which was based on the continuous wave, it showed good agreement with theoretical directivity on the principal lobe.

  • It is important for an ultrasonic testing to know the sound pressure field and the directivity of ultrasonic waves propagating in a solid. The directivity of ultrasonic wave is closely related to the sensitivity, the scanning pitch, the arrangement of angle probe, and the defect kind in ultrasonic testing. This paper describes on the directivity measurement of ultrasonic wave using ultrasonic wave visualization method. The directivity of the shear wave emitted from the angle probes were constant during propagation. The difference of directivity was existed between 2MHz and 4MHz angle probes. The centers of directivity were located backward from the incident poing and inside of the angle probe and were not changed during the wave propagation.

  • The ultrasonic non-destructive testing uses the directivity of the ultrasonic pulse wave which propagates in one direction. The directivity is expressed as the relationship between the propagate direction and its sound pressure. The directivity of ultrasonic wave is closely related to determination of probe arrangement, testing sensitivity, scanning pitch and defect location and characterization. The paper measured the directivity of shear wave, which reflected from artificial defect located in weld metal zone in butt welded joint similar model made of pyrex glass by using visualization method. 2 MHz and 4 MHz angle probes were used to measure the directivity of reflection wave at the artificial defect. The directivity of shear waves reflected from the defect was different according to the probe position and the shape of butt welded joint. The difference of directivity of reflection wave was existed between 2 MHz and 4 MHz angle probes. The angle of reflection wave became equal to angle of incidence as increase of the height of excess metal.

  • The directivity of the sound pressure increases the sensitivity of the incoming sound from specific directions. The directivity measurement of the sound pressure is usually done in an anechoic room using a steping motor. In this paper a replaceable anechoic chamber was designed for the acoustic directivity pattern measurement. Electrical equipments were interfaced with a PC for experiment automatic control. Some comparative results are shown in the result.

  • An ultrasonic testing uses the directivity of the ultrasonic wave which propagates in one direction. The directivity is expressed as the relationship between the propagate direction and its sound pressure. This paper studied the directivity of shear waves emitted from angle probes and scattered from surface defects by using visualization method. These experimental results were compared with the theory which was based on the continuous wave. The applicability of continuous wave theory was discussed in terms of the parameter $d/{\lambda}$; where d is transducer or defect size and ${\lambda}$ is the wavelength. In the case of angle probes, the experimental results show good agreement with theoretical directivity on the principal lobe. When defect size was smaller than the wavelengths, clear directivity in the reflected wave was observed. In the case of the same ratio of defect size to wavelength, the directivity of reflected waves from the defect show almost the same directivity in spite of frequency differences. When the $d/{\lambda}$ is greater than 1.5, measured directivities almost agreed with the theoretical one.

  • Since a bubble in water is a highly nonlinear acoustic scatterer, the acoustic scattered waves from underwater bubbles show highly nonlinear acoustic properties. These acoustic scattered waves can be observed at the second or higher harmonics as well as at the fundamental primary frequency of incident acoustic wave. When two primary acoustic waves of different frequencies are incident on a bubble, the acoustic scattered waves can be also observed at the sum and the difference frequencies of the primary waves. In this study, when the two primary acoustic waves were incident on a bubble screen in water, we observed that the amplitude of difference frequency wave was amplified by the bubble nonlinearity and its directivity was oriented in the propagation directions of primary waves. The directivity of scattered difference frequency wave was analyzed as a coherent scattering for virtual source by using the directivity of the primary acoustic wave.

  • This study depicts an experimental work of the impulsive wave discharged from the open end of several kinds of right-angle bend pipes, which are attached to the open end of a simple shock tube. The weak normal shock wave with its magnitude of Mach number from 1.03 to 1.20 is employed to obtain the impulsive wave propagating outside the open end of the bend pipes. The experimental data of the magnitude of the impulsive wave and its propagation directivity are analyzed to characterize the impulsive waves discharged from the right-angle bend pipes and compared with those from a straight pipe. The results obtained show that a right-angle miter bend considerably reduces the magnitude of the impulsive wave and its directivity toward to the pipe axis, compared with the straight pipe. It is believed that the right angle miter bend pipe can playa role of passive control against the impulsive wave.

  • This experimental study describes the propagation characteristics of the impulse noise emitted from the exit of a straight pipe attached to the open end of a simple shock tube. The sound pressure level and directivity of the impulse noise propagating from the exit of pipe with several different diameters are measured in the far sound fold for the range of the incident shock wave Mach number between 1.07 and 1.26. The experimental results showed that the peak values of impulse noises had a strong dependance on the exit diameter of a pipe and the shock wave Mach number. The impulse noise had the directivity propagating toward to the pipe axis and the characteristics of inverse square law of propagation distance. Moreover, it was shown that the one-third octave band SPL of impulse noise was almost constant regardless of the frequency band.
