  • The main form of nitrogen fertilizer applied to lowland rice is urea, but little is known about its transport in waterlogged soil. This study was conducted to investigate the transport of urea in waterlogged soil column using WAVE (simulation of the substances Water and Agrochemicals in the soil, crop and Vadose Environment) model which includes the parameters for urea adsorption and hydrolysis, The adsorption distribution coefficient and hydrolysis rate of urea were measured by batch experiments. A transport experiment was carried out with the soil column which was pre-incubated for 45 days under flooded condition. The urea hydrolysis rate (k) was $0.073h^{-1}$. Only 5% of the applied urea remained in soil column at 4 days after urea application. The distribution coefficient ($K_d$) of urea calculated from adsorption isotherm was $0.21Lkg^{-1}$, so it was assumed that urea that urea was a weak-adsorbing material. The maximum concentration of urea was appeared at the convective water front because transport of mobile and weak-adsorbing chemicals, such as urea, is dependent on water convective flow. The urea moved down to 11 cm depth only for 2 days after application, so there is a possibility that unhydrolyzed urea could move out of the root zone and not be available for crops. A simulated urea concentration distribution in waterlogged soil column using WAVE model was slightly different from the measured concentration distribution. This difference resulted from the same hydrolysis rate applied to all soil depths and overestimated hydrodynamic dispersion coefficient. In spite of these limitations, the transport of urea in waterlogged soil column could be predict with WAVE model using urea hydrolysis rate (k) and distribution coefficient ($K_d$) which could be measured easily from a batch experiment.

  • This study analyzed the foreign substances in waterlogged archaeological woods and compounds in soil where waterlogged archaeological wood was buried, in order to examine the relationship between burial environment and foreign substances in waterlogged archaeological wood. The XRF(X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy) and EDX(Energy Dispersive X-ray) analysis were conducted to examine the effect of iron(Fe) to blacken the waterlogged wood. The XRF results showed that investigated soil contained Si, Al, and Fe. Wood ash contained more sulfur and Fe than any other elements in the EDX analysis. Cellulose and hemicellulose were significantly reduced at the surface of wood, which is the blackened part of waterlogged wood. Foreign substances changed the surface color. These problems could be solved by removal of foreign substances in waterlogged archaeological wood using EDTA(Ethylene Diamine Tetra Acetic acid). The optimum condition to remove Fe from waterlogged wood by EDTA was investigated. To do this, the concentration of Fe removed was measured with various concentration of EDTA-2Na. The optimum pH of EDTA-2Na was figured to be 4.1 to 4.3. As the concentration of EDTA increased, the extracted concentration of Fe also increased. In the case of 0.4 wt% of EDTA-2Na, about 60ppm of Fe was eliminated and was stabilized after 48 hours. In the case of EDTA-3Na, the optimum pH was 7 to 8, and about 10 ppm of Fe was eliminated at 0.4 wt% of EDTA-3Na. In the case of EDTA-4Na, the optimum pH was 10 to 11, and about 20 ppm of Fe was eliminated at 0.4 wt% of EDTA-4Na. In conclusion, the iron(Fe) in waterlogged archaeological wood was removed by EDTA treatment and it increased the whiteness of the surface.

  • An experiment was conducted to obtain the quantitative data on the transformation and loss of applied urea-N in waterlogged soil columns. The soil columns were pre-incubated for 35 days to develop oxidized and reduced soil conditions prior to urea application. After urea application at the rate of $150kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$(29.5 mg N), the amounts of nitrogen which were volatilized, leached, and remained in soil column were measured during 38 days of incubation period. On 2 and 4 days of incubation, 54.1%(15.9 mg N) and 98.4%(29.0mg N) of the applied urea was hydrolyzed, respectively. Most of the applied urea was completely hydrolyzed within 6 days. After urea application, the rates of ammonia volatilization were increased with the floodwater pH when the floodwater pH were higher than 7.0. The maximum rate of ammonia volatilization was $0.3mg\;d^{-1}$ when pH of the floodwater showed maximum value of 7.6. The total amount of volatilized nitrogen was 6.1% (1.8mg N) of the applied urea-N. A 63.2 % (18.6mg N) of the applied urea was remained in soil as $NH_4{^+}-N$ and 28.0% (8.2mg N) of the applied urea was leached as $NH_4{^+}-N$ at the end of the incubation. Amount of $NO_3{^-}-N$ in soil was smaller than 2.0 mg throughout the incubation period. The total amount of $NO_3{^-}-N$ leached was very small, which value was 1.8 mg. It suggested that nitrification process was not significant in waterlogged soil column of this study due to high infiltration rate of urea solution applied to the soil column. Therefore only small amount of $NO_3{^-}-N$ was lost by denitrification and leaching process.

  • pH control-precipitation method is used for recovery of EDTA from waste fluid of archeological waterlogged wood conservation treatment. EDTA has been used for eliminating of blacken effect in archeological waterlogged wood which was buried in the ground for long period of time. The black substance is generated by Fe$^{3+}$ in the soil reacted with tannin in the archeological waterlogged wood. In order to remove the black substance in archeological waterlogged wood, EDTA was used. The black substance is eliminated from wood as Fe-EDTA complex are formed, and EDTA is separated and precipitated from Fe-EDTA complexes at pH 2.68 or less. The result of analysis of the precipitated products and the commercial EDTA by FT-IR and FE-SEM showed that precipitated product by pH adjusted was not a type of Fe-EDTA complex, but pure EDTA. In this study, Fe$^{3+}$ from waste fluid of EDTA can be separated by HCl added. EDTA can be recycled by using the method of precipitation of EDTA in a strong acid.

  • Alteration of physical and chemical characteristics and the effect of removal of mineral substances in waterlogged archaeological woods by different cleaning processes were examined using oak wood(Quercus spp.) that was excavated from wetland near Gwangju, Korea. Cleaning methods employed in the present work were (1) tools, (2) deaeration, (3) EDTA and (4) ultrasonic cleaning, which are being currently applied in the field of preservation treatment. Cleaning process were performed independently or continuously. Composition of mineral substances in the waterlogged archaeological wood was almost same as the that of soil in which waterlogged archaeological woods were buried. In case of independent cleaning, tools cleaning efficiently removed the mineral substances on surface. Surface color become brighter after cleaning with EDTA. In contrast, deaeration and ultrasonic cleaning did not show any significant removal of mineral substances. In continuous cleaning process, tool cleaning as the first step treatment showed the same effect as shown in independent cleaning. Although deaeration as the second step cleaning did not remove the mineral substances, it could be assumed to contribute the infiltration of dimensional agents by homogenization of wood. EDTA treatment (the third step cleaning) removed the iron(Fe) and increased the whiteness of wood color. The ultrasonic treatment (the fourth step cleaning) removed the sodium(Na) remained after EDTA treatment and the fine mineral substances.

  • Soil transmission ratio of Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus (CGMMV) was 0.2 to 3.5 % in watermelon growing fields naturally infested with the virus. Biological activities of CGMMV lost after 17 months in moist well-aerated soil but still continued more than 33 months in waterlogged soil. To inhibit the virus infection through soil, the roots of watermelon seedlings were soaked in 10% solution of skim milk prior to transplanting. The seedlings treated with skim milk solution were not infected, while 5.0 to 7.6% out of control seedlings were infected. The roots treated with skim milk were coated with membrane around the roots under scanning electron microscope.

  • Stable stand establishment is pre-requisite in direct rice seeding system for obtaining optimal yield of rice crop in rain-fed and waterlogged areas. Anaerobic condition on waterlogged soil causes low germination which significantly reduces crop yield. Due to low availability of tolerant genetic material for anaerobic germination, there is urgent need to evaluate rice germplasm for better germinability under anaerobic conditions. Seeds of the 185 rice accessions were evaluated for germination vigor and coleoptile length under anaerobic conditions. The variation among germplasm was tested for significance using analysis of variance and various multivariate components. Significant level of variation was observed among all accessions for germination vigor and coleoptiles length. Although highest mean values for coleoptiles length (2.1cm) and germination rate (60%) were observed in japonica accessions but maximum coleoptile length (4.68cm) and germination rate (96%) was found in indica genotype CO18. A highly significant and positive correlation was also observed between germination vigor and coleoptiles length, which signify the importance of elongated coleoptile under anaerobic conditions. The PCA analysis illustrated that 97.24% variation was accounted by PC1 while PC2 and PC3 explained 2.54% and 0.24% variation for germination vigor and coleoptile length. PCA scattered plot divided the accessions in four various groups. All AG tolerant accessions were included in group I. Likewise in the case of cluster analysis, two major clades (I and II) were formed. All accessions showing >40% germination rate were included in clade I, whereas all other accessions with <40% germination rate were grouped in clade II. Further more highly tolerant accessions (>80% germination) were grouped in sub-cluster IA.

  • As an approach to the explanation of increased availability of phosphate in reduced wetland soils, the interrelationships among pH, pe, $Fe^{+{+}}$ and water soluble phosphate in reduced soil-water suspension was studied. 1. p.e value of soil incubated for 8 weeks at $30^{\circ}C$ under waterlogged condition was sufficiently low to allow the conversion of strengite to vivianite. 2. The concentration of water soluble $Fe^{+{+}}$ in this system was higher than that is allowable by the solubility of vivianite. 3. From the relationship between pH and the concentration of water soluble $Fe^{+{+}}$, the concentration of water soluble $Fe^{+{+}}$ could be determined with the solubility of $FeCO_3$. 4. No definite relationship between pH and water soluble P was recognized which implied that the concentration of water soluble P in this system could not determined with the solubility of vivianite.
