  • In recent, the machining of difficult-to-cut materials such as titanium alloys, stainless steel, Inconel, ceramic, glass, and carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) used in aerospace, automobile, medical industry is actively researched. Abrasive waterjet is a non-traditional processing method in which ultra-high pressure water and abrasive particles are mixed in a mixing chamber and shoot out jet through a nozzle, and removed by erosion due to collision with a material. In particular, the nozzle of the abrasive waterjet is one of the most important parts that affect the machining quality as with a cutting tool in general machining. It is very important to monitor the condition of the nozzle because the workpiece is uncut or the surface quality deteriorates due to wear, expanding of the bore, damage of the nozzle and clogging of the abrasive, etc. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a monitoring system based on Acoustic Emission(AE) sensor that can detect nozzle condition in real time during AWJ processing.

  • Although rock excavation is necessary for the effective utilization of urban space, most conventional rock excavation methods, including the blasting method, cause high noise and vibration. Meanwhile, if a high pressure waterjet system is applied to excavate underground spaces in urban areas, the public grievance can be reduced by low noise and vibration. In this study, an abrasive waterjet system is designed and developed to study the influence of various performance parameters such as jet pressure, nozzle traverse speed, stand-off distance, or abrasive feed rate on waterjet excavation performance in laboratory. Using the developed waterjet system, rock drilling characteristics are identified by measuring drilling depths as a function of the jet exposure time. The drilling depth linearly increases with increasing the jet exposure time(under 60sec). Rock cutting characteristics are also obtained with various jet pressures(1600~3200kg/$cm^2$) and nozzle traverse speeds(1.9~14.1mm/s): The cutting depth is nonlinearly related to the jet pressure and traverse speed. Indeed, the cutting depth increases with an increase in the jet pressure and a decrease in the nozzle traverse speed. This trend can be explained by energy transferring/loss mechanism.

  • This paper describes the performance of small waterjet propulsion system and show the influence of performance for nozzle shape and area. The installed engine sets a limit on maximum power in below 1800 rpm for fuel saving. Our designated target is reached by redesign of the impeller considering engine characteristics and extention of nozzle pararell part. The results of the full-scale ships are compared with thoes of the model test. In the future, those experimental data will be applied to the relation study between engine characteristics and powering performance prediction.

  • It is well known that water jetting is now widely used in the advanced cutting processes of polymers, metals, glass, ceramics, and composite materials because of some advantages, such as heatless and non-contacting cutting different from the laser beam machining. In this paper, we proposed the simulation model of waterjet by lengths and the inner spiral structure of the nozzle. The simulation results show that the outlet velocity of the nozzle is faster than the inlet. Furthermore, we found rapid velocity reduction after passing through the outlet. The nozzle of diameter ${\phi}500$ and length 70mm, shows the optimal fluid width and velocity distribution. Also, the nozzle with inner spiral structure shows a Gaussian distribution of velocity and this model is almost twice as fast as the model without spiral structure, within the effective standoff distance (2.5 mm). In the future, when inserting abrasive material into the waterjet, we plan to analyze the fluid flow and the particle behavior through a simulation model.

  • A comparative study between a computation and an experiment has been conducted to predict the performance of a Pod type waterjet for cm amphibious wheeled vehicle. The Pod type waterjet has been chosen on the basis of the required specific speed of more than 2500. As the Pod type waterjet is an extreme type of axial flow type waterjet, theoretical as well as experimental works about Pod type waterjets are very rare. The main purpose of the present study is to validate and compare to the experimental results of the Pod type waterjet with the developed CFD in-house code based on the RANS equations. The developed code has been validated by comparing with the experimental results of the well-known turbine problem. The validation also extended to the flush type waterjet where the pressures along the duct surface and also velocities at nozzle area have been compared with experimental results. The Pod type waterjet has been designed and the performance of the designed waterjet system including duct, impeller and stator was analyzed by the previously mentioned m-house CFD Code. The pressure distributions and limiting streamlines on the blade surfaces were computed to confirm the performance of the designed waterjets. In addition, the torque and momentum were computed to find the entire efficiency and these were compared with the model test results. Measurements were taken of the flow rate at the nozzle exit, static pressure at the various sections along the duct and also the nozzle, revolution of the impeller, torque, thrust and towing forces at various advance speed's for the prediction of performance as well as for comparison with the computations. Based on these measurements, the performance was analyzed according to the ITTC96 standard analysis method. The full-scale effective and the delivered power of the wheeled vehicle were estimated for the prediction of the service speed. This paper emphasizes the confirmation of the ITTC96 analysis method and the developed analysis code for the design and analysis of the Pod type waterjet system.

  • A study of design and analysis for the POD type waterjet is conducted. The analysis and design of waterjet system are more difficult than that of conventional propulsor because waterjet is complicatedly composed of many parts which are impeller, stator, inlet, nozzle, etc. The streamline method is traditionally used in the design of pump whose characteristics are similar to those of waterjet. This streamline method, however, has some limitation in analysis of a viscous flow as well as the interaction of inlet part of hull. In the present study, the developed CFD program is applied to the analysis of POD type waterjet. The developed program is first validated by comparing the existed experimental results. The designed waterjet system is also analyzed by the developed CFD program and analyzed results show that the performance of the present POD type waterjet is above the requirement.
