  • Yellow loess, Tidal plat sediment, and mud are blown to be high in adsorption though they have great distinction according to the ratio of clay minerals content and their kinds. Thus one of the samples for this study can be obtained by drying of Yellow loess, Tidal plat sediment, and the mud which is semifinished products that are from the progress of heat treatment and making homogeneity which can be found everywhere in our county. Another sample can be prepared by reducing pollutants with the adsorbent and by homing heavy metals of their on. With the samples, noxious heavy metals such as Pb, Cd, and essential trace elements such as Cu, Fe, Mn by each concentration is tested for adsorption according to pH, the kinds of adsorbents and the amount of injection. With the help of these steps, this study shows that the adsorbents, which are green, reducing the additional pollution and low in price, can be found. It also shows that the optimal condition for removing pollutants can be found and the basic materials for treating water can be offered. The results were as follows ; Yellow loess shows the rates of adsorption by more than 50% and Tidal plat sediment and Mud show it by more than 90%. Thus Tidal plat sediment and Mud are higher than Yellow loess the rates of adsorption. The pH should be treated in natural condition because the rates of adsorption of Pb, Cd, Cu, Mn excepting Fe in mud is higher in pH 7 than in pH 3 of Yellow loess, Tidal plat sediment, and Mud. The drying adsorbents are good to use because the rates of adsorption of heavy metals has tendency to be higher in the drying method than in the burning method. It is considered that the more the mont of the injection of the adsorbent is , the higher the rates of adsorption is, and one gram is reasonable for the amount of the injection of Tidal plat sediment and mud. Yellow loess is suitable for the treatment of the water that includes low concentration of heavy metals because it has the lower rate of adsorption as the concentration of noxious heavy metals is higher. It is thought that Tidal plat sediment and Mud is proper for the treatment of the water that includes high concentration of heavy metals because the rates of adsorption has not been changed as the concentration of heavy metals increases.

  • Objectives: Hwangryunhaedok-tang (Huang-lian-jie-du-tang, HRHDT, 黃連解毒湯) is a traditional Korean herbal medicine that is formulated with Coptidis Rhizoma, Phellodendri Cortex, Scutellariae Radix and Gardeniae Fructus. HRHDT is cold (寒) and bitter (苦) in nature and has general properties of clearing heat and detoxifying (淸熱解毒), strengthening the stomach and settling the liver (健胃平肝), and reducing inflammation, fever and swelling. This formula can prevent and treat artherosclerosis, hyperplasia of the endothelium, cerebral fluid circulation, cerebral vascular deterioration through aging, impairment of neurotransmitters, or disruption of the functioning of the cerebral cortex following infection or trauma. The purpose of the study reported here was to determine the neuroprotective effect of HRHDT on global ischemia induced by 4-vessel occlusion in Wistar rats. Methods: HRHDT extract was lyophilized after extraction with 85% methanol and 100% water. Rats were induced to 10 minutes of forebrain ischemia by 4-vessel occlusion (4-VO) and reperfused again. HRHDT was administered with a dose of 100 mg/kg, and 500 mg/kg of 85% methanol extracts and 100 mg/kg of 100% water extracts, respectively, at 0 min and 90 min after 4-VO. Rats were killed at 7 days after ischemia and the number of CA1 pyramidal neurons was counted in hippocampal sections stained with cresyl violet. Results: Body temperature of animals showed no significant difference between saline-treated groups and HRHDT extracts-treated groups until 5 hours of reperfusion. This result indicated that neuroprotective effects of HRHDT extracts were not due to hypothermic effects. The administration of HRHDT showed a significant neuroprotective effect on hippocampal CA1 neurons at 7 days after ischemia compared to the saline-treated group (P<0.001). HRHDT methanol extracts of 100 mg/kg, 500 mg/kg and HRHDT water extracts of 100 mg/kg showed 88.5%, 98.3% and 95.1 % neuroprotection, respectively. Conclusions: The results of this study demonstrate that administration of HRHDT is highly effective in reducing neuronal damage in response to transient global cerebral ischemia. HRHDT may involve many mechanisms that might account for its high degree of efficacy. A number of factors including free radicals, glutamate, calcium overload, NO, and various cytokines have been proposed to have an important role in causing neuronal death after short periods of global ischemia. Further studies are needed to know the neuroprotective mechanisms of HRHDT.

  • The contents of bioactive and antioxidative activities (DPPH (${\alpha},{\alpha}'$-diphenyl-${\beta}$-picrylhydrazyl), free radical scavenging activity, peroxidation of linoleic acid and rat hepatocyte microsome, and Fe/Cu reducing power, tyrosinase inhibition activity) were tested by in vitro experimental models using water, hot water, ethanol and methanol extracts of leaves (ASL), roots (ASR), stems (ASS) and fruits (ASF) from Acanthopanax senticosus. Hot water extract from ASL showed the highest extraction yield (16.04%) as well as highest contents of phenolic compounds (2.67%) and flavonoids (1.43%). Major minerals were K, Ca and Mg. In oxidation in vitro models using DPPH free radical scavenging activity, Fe/Cu reducing power, $Fe^{2+}$/ascorbate-induced linoleic acid peroxidation by ferric thiocyanate and thiobarbituric acid (TBA) methods, tyrosinase inhibition activity and autooxidation of rat hepatic microsomes membrane, and antioxidative activities were strong in Acanthopanax senticosus. From these results, ASL extracts were shown to have the most potent antioxidative properties and contain the highest amounts of antioxidative compounds such as phenolic compounds and flavonoids. These results may provide the basic data to understand the biological activities of bio-active materials derived from leaves of Acanthopanax senticosus.

  • Stephania delavayi Diels. (S. delavayi Diels.) has been used as a drug for pain-relieving and acute gastroenteritis treatment in China. Because the major therapeutic mechanism of anti-inflammatory drug is to inhibit the cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 and because COX-2 proteins inhibit apoptosis, COX-2 inhibitor has been thought as the anticancer drug candidate. For this reason, we examined S. delavayi Diels. as an anticancer drug. S. delavayi Diels. was fractionated with methanol and then partitioned with ethyl acetate, n-butanol and water. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity and reducing power. DPPH radical scavenging activities of the crude fractions at the concentration of $1,000{\mu}g/mL$ were 75.23% (n-butanol), 68.11% (methanol), 63.58% (ethyl acetate), and 50.13% (water). The reducing power increased according to the concentration in dose-dependent manner. Also, when the antiproliferation effects of each fraction against human breast cancer cell-lines MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7 were examined, methanol extract, n-butanol fraction and ethyl acetate fraction exhibited cell proliferative inhibition effects in both cell-lines whereas water fraction did not. Among the crude fractions, the n-butanol fraction exhibited the most potent anti-proliferation effect. In conclusion, fractions from S. delavayi Diels. are promising anticancer drug candidates.

  • The effect of the extraction solvent on the physiological properties of the peel of the Korean pear (Pyrus pyrifolia cv. Niitaka) was evaluated. The total phenol content was highest in the 80%(wt) methanol extract, whereas flavonoid content was highest in the 80% ethanol extract. The antioxidant activities of the extracts were evaluated using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging abilities, and their reducing power. The water and 80% methanol extracts of the pear peel had highest DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities, and reducing power, respectively. The inhibition of ${\alpha}$-glucosidase was highest in the 80% methanol extract, and alcohol dehydrogenase activity was highest in the water extract. All three extracts had similar antimicrobial activity. Because water, 80% ethanol, and 80% methanol extracts exhibited high activities in different assays of physiological properties, each solvent could be used for specific purposes.

  • As the impermeable area of soil increases due to urbanization, the water circulation system of the city is deteriorating. The existing guidelines for low impact development (LID) facilities installed to solve these water problems or in previous studies, engineering aspects are more prominent than landscaping aspects. This study attempted to present an engineering and landscaping model for reducing pollutants by identifying the effects of vegetation on rainfall outflows and pollutant reduction in bioretention and the economic aspects of planting. Based on the results of artificial rainfall monitoring at Jeonju Seogok Park and the literature on vegetation rainfall runoff and pollutant reduction performance, the best vegetation for reducing pollution compared to cost was Lythrum salicaria L and Salix gracilistyla Miq. was the best vegetation for carbon storage. If you insist to design plants with only these two plantation, there is no choice but to take risks such as biodiversity. Herbaceous plants such as Lythrum salicaria L can be replaced by death of the plants or pests if considered planting various plants. The initial planting cost could expensive, but it is also necessary to mix and plant Salix gracilistyla Miq, which are woody plants that are advantageous in terms of maintenance, according to the surrounding environment and conditions. Based on the conclusions drawn in this study, it can be a reference material when considering the reduction of pollution by species and carbon storage of vegetation in LID facilities.

  • To mitigate natural disasters and efficiently manage water resources, it is essential to enhance hydrologic prediction while reducing model structural uncertainties. This study analyzed the impact of lumped and semi-distributed GR4J model structures on simulation performance and evaluated uncertainties with and without data assimilation techniques. The Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) and Particle Filter (PF) methods were applied to the Namgang Dam basin. Simulation results showed that the Kling-Gupta efficiency (KGE) index was 0.749 for the lumped model and 0.831 for the semi-distributed model, indicating improved performance in semi-distributed modeling by 11.0%. Additionally, the impact of uncertainties in meteorological forcings (precipitation and potential evapotranspiration) on data assimilation performance was analyzed. Optimal uncertainty conditions varied by data assimilation method for the lumped model and by sub-basin for the semi-distributed model. Moreover, reducing the calibration period length during data assimilation led to decreased simulation performance. Overall, the semi-distributed model showed improved flood simulation performance when combined with data assimilation compared to the lumped model. Selecting appropriate hyper-parameters and calibration periods according to the model structure was crucial for achieving optimal performance.

  • It is sometimes necessary to change the location of the collection conduit, which is constructed in shallow sediments in a stream, if the concentrations of $Fe^{2+}$ and $Mn^{2+}$ become too high for water treatment. A total of nine wells, including four shallow wells with a depth of 3 m and five deeper wells with a depth of 6 m, were installed in the study area at Naeseong-cheon in Yecheon-gun. The change in hydrogeochemical features of groundwater and the concentrations of $Fe^{2+}$ and $Mn^{2+}$ were examined at the wells during 5 hours of pumping. As pumping was performed, the velocity of groundwater flow was increased around the pumping well and aeration conditions were developed to precipitate iron and manganese oxides in an oxidizing environment. In addition, the concentrations of $Ca^{2+}$ and $Cl^-$ at the pumping well were increased following the mixing of surface water and groundwater. It is suggested that the center region of the stream would be more suitable for a new collection conduit, considering the concentrations of $Fe^{2+}$ and $Mn^{2+}$ in groundwater and their reducing effect during pumping. The installation of a collection conduit based on field tests performed to ensure water quality enables a reduction in the construction and management costs at water treatment facilities.

  • In this study, degumming process was carried out for reducing to less than 10 ppm of phosphorus contents and primary properties of crude canola oil including 0.64 mgKOH/g of acid value, 0.09% of water contents, 0.13% of insoluble impurities, and 40 ppm of phosphorus contents. Efficiency of water degumming and enzymatic degumming was compared for the selection of suitable process obtaining feedstock of biodiesel. Degumming method was determined for preparation of raw material of biodiesel, and reaction conditions were also established. The most effective conditions for water degumming were 2% distilled water (w/w oil), $30^{\circ}C$ of reaction temperature, 900 rpm of agitation speed, and 30 min of reaction time, respectively. In case of enzymatic degumming, optimal conditions were found to be 90 ppm of phospholipase A2 (w/w oil), $50^{\circ}C$ of reaction temperature at pH 5, respectively. When comparing water degumming with enzymatic degumming, efficiency of enzymatic degumming was better than water degumming. However, water degumming method was much more suitable for the production of biodiesel feedstock considering reaction time and process feasibility.

  • In most cases of the water balance analysis, the return flow ratio for each water supply was uniformly determined and applied, so it has been contained a problem that the volume of available water would be incorrectly calculated. Therefore, sewage and wastewater among the return water were focused in this study and the data-driven model was developed to forecast the outflow from the sewage treatment plant. The forecasting results of LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory), GRU (Gated Recurrent Units), and SVR (Support Vector Regression) models, which are mainly used for forecasting the time series data in most fields, were compared with the observed data to determine the optimal model parameters for forecasting outflow. As a result of applying the model, the root mean square error (RMSE) of the GRU model was smaller than those of the LSTM and SVR models, and the Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient (NSE) was higher than those of others. Thus, it was judged that the GRU model could be the optimal model for forecasting the outflow in sewage treatment plants. However, the forecasting outflow tends to be underestimated and overestimated in extreme sections. Therefore, the additional data for extreme events and reducing the minimum time unit of input data were necessary to enhance the accuracy of forecasting. If the water use of the target site was reviewed and the additional parameters that could reflect seasonal effects were considered, more accurate outflow could be forecasted to be ready for climate variability in near future. And it is expected to use as fundamental resources for establishing a reasonable river water management system based on the forecasting results.
