  • As the need for predicting the flood stage of river from torrential downpouring caused by climate change is increasingly emphasized, the study, centered on the area of Gangwon-do Inje-gun and Jeongseon-gun of local river, is to develop peak water level regression equation by rainfall. Through the correlation between rainfall and peak water level, it is confirmed that rainfall according to duration and peak water level have a high correlation coefficient. Based on this, a relational expression of rainfall and peak water level is verified and then the adequacy of the calculated expression is analyzed and the result shows that a very accurate prediction is not easy to achieve but a rough prediction of the change of water level at each point is possible.

  • Vietnam is one of the most vulnarable countries affected by climate change and sea level rise. One of the consequences of climate change and sea level rise is the increase of salinity intrusion into the rivers which is challenging to irrigation systems in coastal areas. This indicates the necessary to study the ability of taking water through sluice gates of irrigation systems in coastal zones, especially in the dry season with the effects of climate change and sea level rise in the future. In this paper, Nam Thai Binh irrigation system is selected as a case study. The irrigation system is one of 22 biggest irrigation systems of the Red River delta in Vietnam located in coastal region. The computed duration is selected in dry season to irrigate for Winter-Spring crops. The irrigation water for the study area is taken from different sluice gates along the Red River and the Tra Ly River. In this paper, MIKE-11 model was applied to assess the ability of taking water for irrigation of the study area in current situation and in the context of climate change and sea level rise senario in 2050 (under the medium emissions scenario (B2) published by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Vietnam published in 2012) with different condition of water availability. The operation of the gates depends on the water levels and sanility conditions. The sanility and water level at different water intake gates of Nam Thai Binh irrigation system were simulated with different senarios with and without climate change and sea level rise. The result shows that, under climate change and sea water level rise, some gates can take more water but some can not take water because of salinity excess and the total water taking from the different gates along the rivers decrease while the water demand is increase. The study indicates the necessary to study quantitatively some recommended solutions in the study area particularly and in coastal region generally in Vietnam to ensure water demand for irrigation and other purposes in the context of climate change and sea level rise in the future.

  • Reservoir water level data identify the current water storage of the reservoir, and they are utilized as primary data for management and research of agricultural water. For the reservoir storage management, Korea Rural Community Corporation (KRC) installed water level stations at around 1,600 agricultural reservoirs and has been collecting the water level data every 10 minutes. However, various kinds of outliers due to noise and erroneous problems are frequently appearing because of environmental and physical causes. Therefore, it is necessary to detect outlier and improve the quality of reservoir water level data to utilize the water level data in purpose. This study was conducted to detect and classify outlier and normal data using two different models including the threshold model and the artificial neural network (ANN) model. The results were compared to evaluate the performance of the models. The threshold model identifies the outlier by setting the upper/lower bound of water level data and variation data and by setting bandwidth of water level data as a threshold of regarding erroneous water level. The ANN model was trained with prepared training dataset as normal data (T) and outlier (F), and the ANN model operated for identifying the outlier. The models are evaluated with reference data which were collected reservoir water level data in daily by KRC. The outlier detection performance of the threshold model was better than the ANN model, but ANN model showed better detection performance for not classifying normal data as outlier.

  • Safety-related parameters are very important for confirming the status of a nuclear power plant. In particular, the reactor vessel water level has a direct impact on the safety fortress by confirming reactor core cooling. In this study, the reactor vessel water level under the condition of a severe accident, where the water level could not be measured, was predicted using a fuzzy neural network (FNN). The prediction model was developed using training data, and validated using independent test data. The data was generated from simulations of the optimized power reactor 1000 (OPR1000) using MAAP4 code. The informative data for training the FNN model was selected using the subtractive clustering method. The prediction performance of the reactor vessel water level was quite satisfactory, but a few large errors were occasionally observed. To check the effect of instrument errors, the prediction model was verified using data containing artificially added errors. The developed FNN model was sufficiently accurate to be used to predict the reactor vessel water level in severe accident situations where the integrity of the reactor vessel water level sensor is compromised. Furthermore, if the developed FNN model can be optimized using a variety of data, it should be possible to predict the reactor vessel water level precisely.

  • In this study, an ultrasonic transducer is fabricated with 1-3 type composite resonators. Pulse-echo responses of an ultrasonic transducer are investigated in underwater dependent on the variable designated water-level. LED Output signals of a level limit with changing a water level is obtained by the 1-3 type self-made composite transducer and electric measuring unit. LED is turned on at above the up-limit level with increasing a water level, and LED is turned on at less than the down-limit level with decreasing a water level. There was good agreement between the virtual water level and output LED signal by using the self-made water-detecting system.

  • To increase the sensitivity of film-type level sensors for water-level measurements, a Wheatstone bridge comprising a half-bridge circuit with a new film-type level sensor design containing four resistors and two electrodes was employed. The proposed film-type level sensor included a temperature compensation feature and demonstrated improved sensitivity owing to a two-fold increase in the voltage output. Furthermore, a repetition error of less than 1.0% was observed for water levels. As the change in resistance varied linearly with the water level, a linear function was derived to represent their relation. Using this derived formula, water level measurements that were twice as precise as those yielded by commercial products were achieved.

  • The sea level of the Earth is rising approximately 2.0mm per year (global average value) due to thermal expansion of sea water, melting of glaciers and other causes by global warming. However, when it comes to design a river, the standard of design water level is decided by analyzing four largeness tide value and harmonic constant with observed tidal water level. Therefore, it seems the external water level needs to consider an increasing speed of the seawater level which corresponds to a design frequency. In the present study, the hourly observed tidal water level targeting 47 tidal stations operated by Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Administration (KHOA) from beginning of observation to 2015 per hour has been collected. The variation of monthly and yearly and increasing ratio have been performed divided 4 seas such as the Southern, East, Western, and Jeju Sea. Also, the external water level existing design for rivers nearby a coast was been reviewed. The current study could be used to figure out the cause of local seawater rise and reflect the external water level as basic data.

  • The objective of this study is securement of upland irrigation water using storage level management of small dams. However, it is not new development of water resources but securement of water using storage level management of existing dam. This study has enhanced the water utilization coefficient of dam, after extra available water had been calculated by application of periodical management storage level and this water is used to other water like the upland irrigation water demand. As the result of application, it can secure extra available water except the water requirement. Minimum extra available water except flood is about $20,000,000\;m^3$ and crop irrigation water demand of 10yr frequency is about $2,033,000\;m^3$ in Seongju. The utilization of crop irrigation water can be possible. And extra available water is about $3,102,000\;m^3$ in 2000, $1,959,000\;m^3$ in 2001 except flood period and crop irrigation water demand of 10yr frequency is about $2,272,000\;m^3$ in Donghwa. It is judged that extra available water cannot be used to crop irrigation water during the dry season in Dongwha. Consequently, when management storage level is determined and more efficient use of water is gotten like this study, water utilization coefficient will be enhanced.

  • This study measured the change of media properties using Time domain Reflectometry (TDR) and Tensionmeter (TM) to measure volumetric water content of soil affecting in land subsidence and pollutant diffusion under saturation/unsaturated condition by water-level fluctuations. Also, actual water content compared their changes aspect by dry oven test for quantitative determinations of these measured values. In the case of TM, initial unsaturated condition confirmed that range in dimension of each other different according to their establishment depth, but measured values of TM can know that is shown measured value in almost similar measuring range under drain condition after the first injection. Also, the results of TDR showed that can measure enough change of volumetric water content in saturation/unsaturated condition by water-level fluctuations. Therefore, we are judged that TDR measurement equipment is very effective to measure the variations of volumetric water content and water-level being caused in groundwater level fluctuations.
