  • The Critical Heat Flux (CHF) of water with dispersed alumina nanoparticles was measured for the geometry and flow conditions relevant to the In-Vessel Retention (IVR) situation which can occur during core melting sequences in certain advanced Light Water Reactors (LWRs). CHF measurements were conducted in a flow boiling loop featuring a test section designed to be thermal-hydraulically similar to the vessel/insulation gap in the Westinghouse AP1000 plant. The effects of orientation angle, pressure, mass flux, fluid type, boiling time, surface material, and surface state were investigated. Results for water-based nanofluids with alumina nanoparticles (0.001% by volume) on stainless steel surface indicate an average 70% CHF enhancement with a range of 17% to 108% depending on the specific flow conditions expected for IVR. Experiments also indicate that only about thirty minutes of boiling time (which drives nanoparticle deposition) are needed to obtain substantial CHF enhancement with nanofluids.

  • This study aims to analyze the influences of applications of two different evapotranspiration (ET) estimation methods on the irrigation water requirements (IWR) for paddy rice and water supply reliability of agricultural reservoirs. The modified Penman (MP), traditional method, and the Penman-Monteith (PM), the new adopted method, were applied on 149 reservoirs located in Honam province for this study. The weather date was used from 1987 to 2016, and analysed the trends of temperature and rainfall during rice growing season between past and current 10 years respectively. The increased average temperature and rainfall were observed from the current 10 years compared to the past years. This phenomena impacts on the results of ET and IWR estimations with decreased IWR obtained from high rainfall regions and increased ET obtained high temperature regions. For the comparisons of application results of two ET approaches, the PM method showed lower ET and IWR, and hence more reliable storage capacity of the reservoirs respect to water supply to paddy fields. The results also showed that the influences of different ET methods applications on the water supply reliability of reservoirs are negligible for the cases of over 3.7 watershed ratio and 670 mm unit reservoir storage, while significant variations of the results obtain from the applications between two ET approaches for the opposite cases. Further studies are necessary to consider various field conditions for practical applications of the PM method estimating ET in the fields of paddy farming.

  • To protect water pollution and scarcity in lake and river, water quality monitoring applications have become important tools to understand the change of aquatic ecosystem. KLEON (Korean Lake Ecological Observatory Network) is designed to manage and share the ecological observations. The various kinds of water quality and phytoplankton observations are collected from the selected observatories such as seven lakes/rivers/wetlands. To deeply understand the collected observations with weather, KLEON also manages the observatory information such as lake, dam, floodgate, and weather. The accumulated observation and analyzed results are used to improve the water quality index of the observatories and encourage the ecologists' cooperation.

  • Concerns on environmental waste problems caused by non-biodegradable petrochemical-based plastic packaging materials as well as consumer's demand for high quality food products has caused an increasing interest in developing biodegradable packaging materials using annually renewable natural biopolymers such as polysaccharides and proteins. However, inherent shortcomings of natural polymer-based packaging materials such as low mechanical properties and low water resistance are causing a major limitation for their industrial use. By the way, recent advent of nanocomposite technology rekindled interests on the use of natural biopolymers in the food packaging application. Polymer nanocomposites, especially natural biopolymer-layered silicate nanocomposites, exhibit markedly improved packaging properties due to their nanometer size dispersion. These improvements include increased mechanical strength, decreased gas permeability, and increased water resistance. Additionally, biologically active ingredients can be added to impart the desired functional properties to the resulting packaging materials. Consequently, natural biopolymer-based nanocomposite packaging materials with bio-functional properties have huge potential for application in the active food packaging industry. In this review, recent advances in the preparation and characterization of natural biopolymer-based nanocomposite films, and their potential use in food packaging applications are addressed.

  • Membrane Fouling was considered as major drawback in various industrial applications. Thus, this paper reviews the surface modification of polyethersulfone (PES) membranes for antifouling performance. Various modification techniques clearly indicate that hydrophilicity has to improve on the PES membrane surface. Moreover, the mechanism of fouling reduction with corresponds to various modification methods is widely discussed. Incorporation of hydrophilic functional groups on PES membrane surface enhances the surface free energy thereby which reduces the fouling. Characterization techniques adopted for the surface modified membranes was also discussed. These studies might be useful for the other researchers to utilize the modification technique for the applications of waste water treatment, chemical process industry and food industry.

  • Nowadays, membrane separation such as reverse osmosis (RO) and ultrafiltration (UF) play an important role in the industrial separation technology. Among desalination technologies available today, reverse osmosis is usually the most economical process for wide range of water salinity. Main applications include production of high purity water, desalination of seawater and brackish water for a drinking water supply, treatment of waste water for environmental protection, and recovery of precious materials from industrial waste water. In this paper, we will mention membrane performance and these practical use focused on reverse osmosis membranes and ultrafiltration membranes recently developed by Toray.

  • The bipolar membrane is an ion exchange membrane consisting of a cation exchange layer, an anion exchange layer, and an interface layer, and is a membrane that generates protons and hydroxide ions based on water dissociation characteristics. Using these properties, research is being conducted in various application fields such as the chemical industry, food processing, environmental protection, and energy conversion and storage. This paper investigated the concept of bipolar membrane, water dissociation mechanism, and water dissociation catalyst to provide a comprehensive understanding of bipolar membrane technology, were investigated. Lastly, we also investigated the bipolar membrane process that has been recently applied to energy technology.

  • Approximately 80% of water used in urban areas reappears as municipal wastewater (MWW). Reclamation of MWW is an attractive proposition under the present scenario of water stressed cities in India. In this paper, we attempted to reclaim MWW using lab-scale hollow- fiber (HF) membrane modules for possible reuse in non-potable applications. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the efficiency of virgin HF ($M_1$) and modified HF ($M_2$) modules. The $M_2$ module consists of HF modified with a skin layer formed through interfacial polymerization of m-phenylenediamine with trimesoyl chloride (MPD-TMC). The molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of $M_1$ was 44000 g/mol and that of $M_2$ 10000 -14000 g/mol on the basis of rejection of polyethylene glycol. The combination of $M_1$ and $M_2$ modules was able to reduce concentrations of most of the pollutants in sewage and improved the treated water quality to the acceptable limits for non potable reuse applications. It is found that about 98-99% of the initial flux is recovered by the backwashing process, which was approximately two times in a month when operated continuously.

  • This review presents the status of our research in liquid crystal display (LCD) photo-aligning. We present the basic mechanisms of the photo-induced order in various photo-aligning materials and in azo-dye layers in particular and show that photo-aligning methods can provide a controllable pretilt angle and anchoring energy of the liquid crystal cell, as well as its high thermo and UV stability. The photo-aligning of various types of liquid crystal displays is also discussed.
