In this study, a phenomenon of saltwater intrusion was monitored under various conditions regarding recharge and pumping rate using time domain reflectometry for a laboratory scale unconfined aquifer to verify the basic theory behind seawater intrusion and to investigate movement of salt-freshwater interface in accordance with the ratio of pumping and recharge rate. Results showed that a thick mixing zone was formed at the boundary instead of a sharp salt-freshwater interface that was assumed by Ghyben and Herzberg who derived an equation relating the water table depth $(H_f)$ to the depth to the interface $(H_s)$. Therefore our experimental results did not agree with the calculated values obtained from the Ghyben and Herzberg equation. Position of interface which was adopted as 0.5 g/L isochlor moved rapidly as the Pumping rate $(Q_p)$ increased for a given recharge rate $(Q_r)$. In addition, interface movement was found to be about 7 times the ratio of $Q_p/Q_r$ in our experimental condition. This indicates that Pumping rate becomes an important factor controlling the seawater intrusion in coastal aquifer.

This is about an environmental study of groundwater interference by hydrodynamic dispersion between the well A and well C in Dongsam-dong, the Yeongdo Island, Pusan, Korea. The groundwater in the study wells come from the fracture zones deeply seated in welded lapilli rhyodacitic tuff of the Late Cretaceous Yucheon Group. The boring depth at the well A is 190 meters, and the optimal pumping rate of the well A is about 100 cubic meters per day therein. The fractured aquifers in impermeable welded tuff show the conjugate fracturing type and are of anisotropic. The aquifers along two fracture zones in the well A are 80 and 100 meters in depth, respectively. It is not suggested that those fractured aquifers are simply connected between the well A and C. The sea level fluctuation by ebb and high tides in a day is not effective to the groundwater table in the well A. The pumping for 15 days at the well A doesn't give rise to any changes of the groundwater levels in the neighbor well C. The radius of influence of the well A is measured as less than 200 meters. The measuring electric conductivity for the test of salt tracer doesn't testify any relationship between the well A and the well C. There is the main difference between the well A and the well C on the basis of the water analysis of those wells. the well A is located in the high content zone of salt much over the standard value for drinking, whereas the other wells B. C. D are in the low content area of salt below the standard value. It is elucidated for the high content zone of salt in Yeongdo around the well A to have been uplifted over 20 meters.
This study examined the food culture of Koreans aged over 80-years-old living in the areas of Goorye and Gokseong. The research method was based on examination of individual cases through in-depth interviews. The total number of survey subjects was 38; males constituted 34 percent of the subjects while females constituted 66 percent of the subjects. Average age of male subjects was 85.3 years while average age of females was 84.8 years. The results were summarized in the following properties of the typical and traditional Korean table, which was the most common food life's property in the longevity area of was centered around rice, watery soup, vegetables, and fish. The first, as the supply step's property of food ingredients, various spices and ingredients such as piperitum, tumeric, ginger, garlic, chili pepper, and salted fish were used. Senior persons also supplied fresh vegetables at the kitchen garden, and they led a nature-friendly food life. The second, as the production of food and cooking of food step's property, there were multigrain rice and fermented foods such as soybean paste, kimchi, red pepper paste, salted fish, vegetables picked in soy sauce, etc. The recipe was cookery intermediated with water, soup, steamed vegetables, seasonings, etc., and it was characterized by a deep and rich taste due to the various spices and rich ingredients. The third, as the consumption of food step's property, senior persons regularly ate a balanced diet three times a day. They also had active personal relationships with their neighbors by sharing food, which increased their sense of belonging and improved their life satisfaction.
Tunnel collapse often occurs during deep underground tunneling (> 40 m depth) in South Korea. Natural cavities as well as water supply pipes, sewer pipes, electric power cables, artificial cavities created by subway construction are complexly distributed in the artificial ground in the shallow depths of the urban area. For deep tunnel excavation, it is necessary to understand the properties of the ground which is characterized by porous elements and various geological structures, and their influence on the stability of the ground. This study analyzed geological factors for risk assessment in deep excavation in South Korea based on domestic and overseas case study. As a result, a total of 7 categories and 38 factors were derived. Factors with high weights were fault and fault clay, differential stress, rock type, groundwater and mud inrush, uniaxial compressive strength, cross-sectional area of tunnel, overburden thickness, karst and valley terrain, fold, limestone alternation, fluctuation of groundwater table, tunnel depth, dyke, RQD, joint characteristics, anisotropy, rockburst and so forth.
In this paper, the unsaturated slope stability analysis considering suction stress (Lu and Godt, 2008) was introduced and the results applied for a certain sand slope were analyzed. The unsaturated slope stability analysis considering suction stress can analyze both conditions of steady infiltration and no infiltration, and it can estimate the safety factor of slope as a function of soil depth. Also, the influence of weathering phenomenon at a certain depth from the ground surface can be considered. The stability analysis considering suction stress was applied to the unsaturated infinite slope composed of sand with the relative density of 60%. The suction stress under no infiltration condition was affected by ground water table until a certain influencing depth. However, the suction stress under steady infiltration condition was affected by seepage throughout the soils. Especially, the maximum suction stress was displayed around ground surface. The factor of safety in the infinite slope under no infiltration condition rapidly increased and decreased within the influence zone of ground water table. As a result of slope stability analysis, the factor of safety is less than 1 at the depth of 2.4 m below the ground surface. It means that the probability of slope failure is too high within the range of depths. The factor of safety under steady infiltration condition is greater than that under no infiltration condition due to the change of suction stress induced by seepage. As the steady infiltration rate of precipitation was getting closer to the saturated hydraulic conductivity, the factor of safety decreased. In case of the steady infiltration rate of precipitation with $-1.8{\times}10^{-3}cm/s$, the factor of safety is less than 1 at the depths between 0.2 m and 3 m below the ground surface. It means that the probability of slope failure is too high within the range of depths, and type of slope failure is likely to be shallow landslides.

Groundwater flow induced by cracks in a buried pipe causes ground loss in the vicinity of it which can lead to underground cavities and sinkhole problems. In this study, the ground collapse mechanism and the failure mode based on an aperture in the pipe located in cohesionless ground were investigated through a series of physical model studies. As the influence parameters, size of the crack, flow velocity in the pipe, groundwater level, ground cover depth and ground composition were adopted in order to examine how each of the parameters affected the behavior of the ground collapse. Influence of every experimental condition was evaluated by the final shape of ground failure (failure mode) and the amount of ground loss. According to the results, the failure mode appeared to be a 'Y' shape which featured a discontinuous change of the angle of erosion when a groundwater level was equal to the height of the ground depth. While in the case of a water table getting higher than the level of ground cover depth, the shape of the failure mode turned to be a 'V' shape that had a constant erosion angle. As the height of the ground depth increased, it was revealed that a mechanism where a vertically collapsed area which consisted of a width proportional to the ground height and a constant length occurred was repeated.
The spawning behavior and developmental pattern of the Korean eleotrid fish (Odontobutis obscurus) was investigated in one of the tributary of Han River. The spawining of this species begins on April and continues up to August, whereas, the spawning. of same species were between the end of June and the middle of July in Kyushu, Japan. August The spawning places were the margin of river, its the bottom composed of sand and pebble (Table 5). The velocity of water in the spawning places was 0-40cm/sec, and the depth of waters was 10-40cm. The egg was spawned on underside of stone in the spawning places with one or two folds and ellipsoid in shape, 3.4mm in long diameter and 2.0mm in short diameter. The yolk is 1.2mm in diameter and yellow in color. For hatching of the egg, it takes one month in, $16^{circ}C~19^{\circ}C$ water, in Japan, whereas it takes only 14 days in $20^{circ}C~30^{\circ}C$ wate rin the study area. The growth rate of larva and juvenile fish were as follows: new hatched larva is 45mm in length; after 5 days it became 5.0 to 5.5mm in length and 1.2 to 1.5mm in height after 20 days. it became 11.0mm in length and 2.3mm in length. The mean size of the mature female is 110mm in total length and larger 10mm than that of the same fish found in Japan.
A series of model tests were performed to investigate the ground deformation during trench excavation for diaphragm walls. An apparatus was manufactured to observe the failure pattern of a slurry-supported trench in sandy ground. Ground deformations including settlement and lateral displacement of the surrounding ground adjacent to the trench were carefully monitored during excavation. Experimental observations indicated that the settlement of the adjacent ground increased with closing to the trench. Especially, the considerable settlement occurred at the distance which was equal to 40% of the excavation depth. And, the higher settlement was obtained when the relative density of ground was looser and the ground water table was higher. Also, the lateral wall face of excavated trench was bulged with lowering the slurry level In stages and then the upper part of trench failed finally. The envelope of ground surface settlement could be represented as a hyperbolic line and the measured settlement was smaller than those predicted by Clough and O'Rourke (1990).
We evaluated the results of pumping tests, the amount of groundwater used by Protected Cultivation with Water Curtain (PCWC), and monthly depth to water table (DTW) at the Wangjeon-ri area, Nonsan City, to elucidate the cause of a decrease in pumping rate during the winter PCWC season. The transmissivity and storage coefficient at eight sites where the major aquifer is alluvium, vary from 119.9 to $388.1m^2/d$ and $1.5{\times}10^{-4}$ to $5.5{\times}10^{-4}$, respectively. The pumping rate for PCWC during three months (Dec. to Feb.) averaged about $8,100m^3/d$ and the maximum water level in the area varied by about 10 m. Groundwater levels had fully recovered by August-five months after pumping for PCWC had ceased. These observations indicate that the pumping rate during the winter PCWC season was excessive compared with groundwater productivity in the area. Groundwater level in the central PCWC area varied from -3.0 to 4.38 m, exceeding the water level of the Nosung Stream for only three months (Aug. to Oct.). This result indicates that Nosung Stream recharges the area during the period from November to July. To solve the problem of reduced pumping rate during the winter PCWC season, it would be necessary to reduce the amount of groundwater used for PCWC or to develop an artificial recharge system using recycled groundwater.

The objective of this study is the generation of the gridded flash flood index using the gridded hydrologic components of TOPLATS land surface model and statistic flash flood index model. The accuracy of this method is also examined in this study. The study area is the national capital region of Korea, and 38 flash flood damages had occurred from 2009 to 2012. The spatio-temporal resolutions of land surface model are 1 h and 1 km, respectively. The gridded meteorological data are generated using the inverse distance weight method with automatic weather stations (AWSs) of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). The hydrological components (e.g., surface runoff, soil water contents, and water table depth) of cells corresponding to the positions of 38 flood damages reasonably respond to the cell based hourly rainfalls. Under the total rainfall condition, the gridded flash flood index shows 71% to 87% from 4 h to 6 h in the lead time based on the rescue request time and 42% to 52% of accuracy at 0 h which means that the time period of the lead time is in a limited rescue request time. From these results, it is known that the gridded flash flood index using the cell based hydrological components from land surface model and the statistic flash flood index model have a capability to predict flash flood in the mountainous area.
