  • The functionalized dendrimer containing 48 azobenzene was synthesized. Many isolated featureless domains were explicitly observed even at the air/water interface. Also, these monolayers were representatively observed, showing the change of surface pressure with irradiation time and wavelength. In AFM images, larger domains irregularly shaped structures on the top, while smaller ones were free from such defects. In the optical absorption spectra of the monolayer films by UV irradiation and heat treatment, only the photoiosmerization of the G4-48 Azo monolayers was observed, revealing a decrease of absorbance peaks without any change of the spectral shape. This suggests that the functional group and the symmetric chain affect optical behavior and morphological change.

  • The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of crude ginseng saponin in water was determined by fluorometry and surface-tension measurement. These two methods gave the the CMC value, 0.015g/100ml AND 0.013G/100ml, respectively. The surface excess of the saponin and the area occupied by a saponin molecule at the monolayer adsorbed at air and waterinterface were calculated employing Gibbs adsorption equation. The presence of salt increased the surface activity of the saponin: it decreased the CMC, the surface tension at the CMC and the area occupied by a saponin molecule at the monolayer, which should be due to the salting-out effect of the salt.

  • Maxwell-Displacement-Current(MDC) measuring technique has been applied to the study of monolayers of Dilauroylphosphatidylcholine (L-.alpha.-DLPC) and Dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (L-.alpha.-DMPC). The displacement current was generated from monolayers on a water surface by monolayer compression. Displacement current was generated when the area per molecule was about 250.angs.$^{2}$, 280.angs.$^{2}$. Displacement current was generated in the gas state, gas/liquid state, and liquid state in the course of monolayer compression. The orientational change of molecules in monolayers was discussed on the basis of the MDCs obtained. Finally, we measured differential thermal analysis of sample.

  • In this study, we used Brewster-Angle Microscope(BAM) to study on the molecular orientation of monolayer on the water surface. The behaviors of molecules on three different subphase have been observed. Reproducible $\pi$-A isotherm have been obtained only on information about phase transition by molecular area. BAM facilitates the observation of morphology by optical anisotropy and thickness in monolayer and multilayers as BAM is shown to be sensitive to anisotropy of film. Every transition was found by BAM technique, either as a dramatic change in degree of contrast or as a sudden alteration of molecular action and $\pi$-A isotherm.

  • Current was generated from monolayers on a air/water surface by monolayer compression, and the measuring technique has been applied to the study on monolayers of Arachidic acid and the range of gas state, gas/fuid state and fluid state in the course of monolayer compression. Also, we measured that compression veloecity(30, 40, 50mm/min) when the sample's spread volume was about $500{\mu}{\ell}$ of sample. From the result, it is known that current is generated in the range of high surface pressures as compression velocity become faster.

  • Monolayers of hypericin, a photodynamic polycyclic quinoidal compound, were prepared at the air-water interface, and were transferred to metal substrates to form Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayers. The structural characteristics of hypericin LB monolayers and self-assembled (SA) monolayers were investigated using surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS) spectroscopy. Both the spectroscopic data and the surface pressure - area (${\pi}-A$) isotherms suggest that hypericin forms ${\pi}-{\pi}$ aggregates that orient vertically to the subphase surface. Whereas the ordering and orientation of control was less effective in SA monolayers, a higher structural regularity was attained in LB systems. The effect of subphase on the structural integrity of the monolayer was also investigated.

  • II-A isotherms and phase behaviors of 'tocomide', a newly synthesized 1,3-bis(N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-tocopherol succinylamino)-2-hydroxypropane, mixed with cholesterol and linoleic acid, was studied for its monolayer miscibility and a stable delivery formulation for antioxidant applications. The monolayer of tocomide and cholesterol was formed in a homogeneously mixed state at air-water interface. The ternary mixtures with linoleic acid showed various bulk structures, including a stable and transparent solution of thermodynamically stable lamellar phase. The lamellar structure was confirmed by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and polarized microscopy such that pure tocomide formed a liquid crystal at room temperature with a lamellar periodicity of 36.7 $\AA$(2$\theta$=2.41$^{\circ}$).

  • In this paper, We introduced that the method for deforming the dielectric relaxation time $\tau$ of floating monolayers on water interface. Displacement current flowing across monolayer is analyzed using a rod-like molecular model. It is revealed that the dielectric relaxation time $\tau$ of monolayers in the isotropic polar orientational phase is determined using a linear relashionship between the monolayer compression speed a and the molecular area $A_m$. A displacement current gives a peak at A=$A_m$. The dielectric relaxation time $\tau$ of phospolipid monolayers was examined on the basis of the analysis developed here.

Currently a variety of research is being carried out in the field of dendrimer / polymer characterization, nano-scale atomic manipulation, and supramolecular nanostructure analysis. We investigated monolayer behavior and its characteristics at the air-water interface by LB method. In this report, we will present the interfacial properties of dendrimer monolayers on various conditions such as the surface-pressure, barrier speed and spreading quantity.

  • Nano adhesion between SPM (scanning probe microscope) tips and 075 (octadecyltrichlorosilane) SAM (self-assembled monolayer) was experimentally studied. Tests were performed to measure the nano adhesion and friction in both AFM(atomic force microscope) and LFM(lateral force microscope) modes in various conditions of relative humidity. OTS SAM was formed on Si-wafer (100) surfaces, and Si$_3$N$_4$ tips of different radius of curvature were used. When the surface was hydrophobic, the adhesion and friction forces were found lower than those of bare Si-wafer. Results also showed that micro-adhesion force increased as the relative humidity and the tip radius of curvature increased. The main parameter for affecting the micro-adhesion was found absorbed humidity on the contact surface. These results were discussed with the JKR model and a capillary force caused by absorbed water.
