The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Cheonggukjang pills with aronia and blueberries on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in mice. There have been several reports that Cheonggukjang is effective for intestinal health, but the efficacy of Cheonggukjang containing fruits has not yet been reported. In this study, we showed the effect of cheonggukjang pills with blueberries and aronia (CPBA) on DSS-induced colitis in BALB/c mice. CPBA was obtained from Soonchang Moonokae foods and orally administered once a day for 2 weeks before DSS treatment. Colitis was induced in mice by feeding 5% (w/v) DSS drinking water for 7 days. The results showed that CPBA treatment significantly alleviated DSS-induced disease activity index associated with a decrease in colon length. CPBA improved DSS-induced histological changes and intestinal epithelial barrier integrity in mice colon. In addition, CPBA administration significantly reduced the levels of DSS-mediated interferon-γ and interleukin-6 in serum and tumor necrosis factor-α in colon tissue. Moreover, the gene expression of COX-2 and iNOS, which are factors involved in inflammatory signaling, was significantly reduced by CPBA treatment. These results suggest that CPBA have a protective effect against DSS-induced mice colitis and may be a candidate for colitis treatment.

Climate change may result in greater risk of yield reduction of waxy corn due to drought stress and maize is one of the sensitive crops to the soil moisture shortage. While irrigation is the most effective practice to reduce the drought damage, farmers are unable to apply water due to limited water resource and irrigating facilities. The study was conducted to investigate the application effect of salicylic acid and abscisic acid on reducing drought stress of waxy corn (Zea mays L.). Drought stress was imposed by withholding irrigation from 9 days before anthesis to 14 days after anthesis. Salicylic acid or abscisic acid was applied on tasseling date at concentration of 0.5 mM and 0.1 mM, respectively. Drought stress increased anthesis-silking interval (ASI) by 3.0~3.3 days and decreased plant height, ear length, ear diameter, number of rows in ear, and yield by 47~51 cm, 4.6~5.0 cm, 4.4~5.3 mm, 1.5~2.0, and 2.4~2.5 Mg/ha, respectively. Application of salicylic acid and abscisic acid did not significantly reduced the drought injuries of waxy corn. Pretreatment of the plant growth regulators before water deficit stress or divided application at low concentration may be required to obtain the reduction effect on drought stress of waxy corn.

To confirm the therapeutic effect of the water extract from Ecklonia cava (WEE) against PM2.5 induced systemic health damage, we evaluated gut health with a focus on the microbiota and metabolites. Systemic damage in mice was induced through PM2.5 exposure for 12 weeks in a whole-body chamber. After exposure for 12 weeks, body weight and food intake decreased, and WEE at 200 mg/kg body weight (mpk) alleviated these metabolic efficiency changes. In addition, PM2.5 induced changes in the length of the colon and fecal water content. The administration of the WEE at 200 mpk oral dose effectively reduced changes in the colon caused by PM2.5 exposure. We also attempted to confirm whether the effect of the WEE is mediated via regulation of the microbiota-gut-brain axis in mice with PM2.5 induced systemic damage. We examined changes in the fecal microbiota and gut metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and kynurenine metabolites. In the PM2.5 exposed group, a decrease in the abundance of Lactobacillus (Family: Lactobacillaceae) and an increase in the abundance of Alistipes (Family: Rikenellaceae) were observed, and the administration of the WEE showed a beneficial effect on the gut microbiota. In addition, the WEE effectively increased the levels of SCFAs (acetate, propionate, and butyrate). Furthermore, kynurenic acid (KYNA), which is a critical neuroprotective metabolite in the gut-brain axis, was increased by the administration of the WEE. Our findings suggest that the WEE could be used as a potential therapeutic against PM2.5 induced health damage by regulating gut function.
This study investigates the hydraulic characteristics and the delta development processes in the improved-pneumatic-movable weir by considering the standing angle of the weir through laboratory experiments. The delta migration speed decreases rapidly with time. As the ratio of delta height to water depth increases, the dimensionless delta migration speed decreases at the delta point. Therefore, the water depth decreases as the delta height increases. Although the delta volume is large due to the effective height of the delta, the delta migration speed and sediment deposition decreases because of the backwater effect on the delta. On the same bed slope condition, the larger the weir height, the larger the delta volume and the ratio of delta height to delta front length is close to 1.0. The delta development could be suppressed when the weir is high. Therefore, the condition that the weir is high has the suppressing effect on the delta developments.
Objectives : This study is to effect of improving muscle atrophy through water extract on the solid-phase fermentation extraction with Phellinus linteus of discarded Schisandra chinensis in an atorvastatin-induced atrophy C2C12 cell. Methods : C2C12 myoblast were differentiated into myotube by 2% horse serum medium for 6 days, and then treated solid-phase fermentation(S-P) extract at different concentrations for 24h. To investigate the effect of S-P extract on the induction of muscle atrophy and expression of atrophy-related genes and apoptosis in differentiated C2C12 myotubes using a GSH, ROS, real-time PCR, western blots analysis. Results : As a result of treatment with atorvastatin at concentrations of 5, 10, and 20 uM on the 6th day of differentiation in C2C12 myotube cells, it was confirmed that the cell morphology was damaged in a concentration-dependent manner, and the length and thickness of the myotube also decreased in a concentration-dependent manner. Treatment with S-P extract (50, 100 and 200 ㎍/㎖) increased of GSH and inhibited ROS in the atorvastatin-induced muscle atrophy cell model at a concentration that did not induce toxicity. In addition, it was confirmed that it has an effect on muscle reduction by inhibiting apoptosis of muscle cells as well as being involved in protein production and degradation of muscle cells. Conclusions : Atorvastatin-induced atrophy C2C12 cell, S-P extract activates related to differentiation/generation and proteolysis, and inhibits cell death of atrophy in C2C12 cell. Based on this, it is necessary to prove its effectiveness through animal models and human application test, but it is considered to be discarded Schisandra chinensis can present the potential for development as a recycling industrial material.

Seedling yield of panax ginseng depended on soil water in a modified Yang-jig seedbed with rice hull mulch and peat application which increased soil water content. Water dependency tended to increase with the increase of potassium in soil. Effect of potassium on water dependency seemed to be constant in certain range of soil water which might be the optimum water for seedling growth. Partial correlation coefficient between seedling yield and water was significant in relation to organic matter (OM), Mg and Ca. The best multiple regression of seedling yield was with $H_2O$, K and Ca. Available phosphorus (P) in soil increased with low level of peat but decreased with high level or with mulching. There was interaction between mulching and peat for P. There was significant linear relation between two of pH, $H_2O$, Ca, Mg, K, OM except between K and $H_2O$ or pH. Ammonium nitrogen negatively correlated with Mg Quadratic relation held between $NO_3-N$ and K or $NH_4-N$ and between P and K+Ca+Mg. Quadratic relation was more significant than linearity between soil factors. Mulching increased stem length. Leaf area index ranged from 1.06 to 1.67. Leaf area per plant ranged $16.0-18.8cm^2$.
In a previous paper, the dirunal and monthly changes of the tidal flat temperature and chlorinity were observed. In this paper the resistance of the young short necked clam in various growth stages to the temperature, to the chlorinity and to the exposure were studies. The young clam used were in early (E), medium (M) and late (L) young stages whose shell lengths were 2.0-3.5mm, 9.0-11.0mm. and 14.0-16.0mm., respectively. The results were : 1. At various sea water temperatures , the chlorinity resistance of the young clam was directly proportional to the shell length. 2. When both inadequate sea water temperature and abnormal chlorinity are simultaneously applied, the resistance of these young clams was more markedly reduced than the case of applying either one of these conditions. 3. In clams of M and L, no lethal effect were observed when daily immersion of four to eight hours for a week into the sea water of any concentration of chloriity at 26-34$^{\circ}C$, whereas in E, 37-90% of mortalities were obtained by immersion of eight hours daily into both the fresh water and the sea water of higher chloriniites (more than 23.5$\textperthousand$ Cl) at the same temperature above. 4. The lower critical thermal maximum for lethal to the young clam was 38$^{\circ}C$. With four hours immersion daily at the water temperature of 38$^{\circ}C$, the mortalities of E, M and L to the lower chlorinities (less than 6.7$\textperthousand$Cl) were 100, 70-100 and 27-37% respectively ; to the higher chlorinities (more than 23.5$\textperthousand$Cl) 10-70, 10-37 and 3 % respectively ; to the normal range of chlorinities (13.4-16.8$\textperthousand$Cl) 0-13, 3 and 0 % respectively. 5. No lethal effects were observed in E and M clams immersed continuously for seven days in sea water with chlornities of 7.2 -21.7$\textperthousand$Cl at 18-24$^{\circ}C$, while notable mortalities were observed in E which had been kept at lower (less than 4.8$\textperthousand$ Cl) and higher (more than 24.1$\textperthousand$ Cl) chlorinites. 6. Although the resistance of the young clam to the chlorinity may have to be related closely to the life history of the clam prior subject to the experiment, the adapted chlorinity range was 7.2-19.3$\textperthousand$ Cl and the optimum range was 13.4-16.8$\textperthousand$Cl. 7. Remarkable lethal effects were observed for the E and M clams to the exposure temperature of 38$^{\circ}C$ whereas the L and had no such fatal results.

In this study, we investigated the physical form of planting foundation of the parks and green spaces in the waterside of Korea and classified them into groups showing common features. It was clssified into 7 kinds of parks and green spaces of 27 waterside parks in Korea including landscape, ecology, art, shields, site boundaries, windbreaks, and soundproofing. As a result, the study was carried out on the detailed type and size estimation through the sampling survey of planting foundation of landscape and ecological type mounding which can be statistically analyzed. Landscape and ecological mounding have the characteristics of securing the ecological stability of the waterside planting areas and the diversity of planting landscape. It is possible to create a green landscape through various terrain changes such as enclosing, focusing, and panoramic view. The physical characteristics of ecological and landscape type mounding can be expressed as height, width, and length And physical data can appear in various forms and sizes depending on the purpose and function of the buffer effect of the land use in the waterside planting areas, the landscape creation, the ecological buffer. In this study, the range of the physical scale for landscape and ecological mounding of waterside parks and green spaces was calculated. The range of the mounding height was analyzed to be less than 1.25m and more than 1.25m and the average height was 0.74~1.08m and 1.75~2.75m respectively. In addition, the range of width of mounding was less than 6.13m, 6.13~17.5m, and more than 17.5m, and the average width of each was 3.45~4.95m, 7.05~10.85m and 31.54~51.54m respectively. The range for the length of mounding was less than 50m, 50~500m, and more than 500m. The mean length of each mounding was 34.0m, 116.3m and 955.8m. It is difficult to distinguish the difference between the waterside planting areas and the urban greenery in the purpose and function of landscape and ecological mounding. However, considering the average distance of 60m from the waterside and the average height of 1.26m, we can conclud that opened planting foundation is prefered to high mounding designs in waterside planting areas. It is expected that the results presented for the improvement of the logical and spatial value of the waterside parks and green areas planting foundation design can be served as the basic data helpful for practical application in landscape architecture planning and design.
Objectives : This study was carried out to investigate the effects of Soyumjungjang-tang(SJT) on the experimental ulcerative colitis induced by dextran sulfate sodium(DSS) in mice. Methods : Ulcerative colitis was induced through supplying 4% DSS solution as the drinking water for 7 days in 6-week-old male ICR mice. The colitic mice were divided into three groups: the sample groups were orally administered SJT in doses of 25mg/kg(S25 group) or 100mg/kg(S100 group) once a day for 10 days, from 3 days before starting drinking the DSS solution, and the control(C) group was administered normal saline instead of SJT. The DSS solution or SJT was not administered to the normal(N) group. The length of colon, histologic finding, the activities of myeloperoxidase(MPO) and alkaline phosphatase(AP), and the expressions of $IL-1{\beta}$, IL-6, COX-2, $NF-{\kappa}B$, and $I{\kappa}B$ in colonic mucosa was checked using immunoblot, ELISA, etc. The activities of chondroitinase, tryptophanase, ${\beta}-glucuronidase$ and ${\beta}-glucosidase$ in stool were also measured. Results : The length of colon shortened, histologic finding deteriorated, the activities of MPO, AP, chondroitinase, tryptophanase, ${\beta}-glucuronidase$ and ${\beta}-glucosidase$, and the expressions of $IL-1{\beta}$, IL-6, COX-2, $NF-{\kappa}B$ increased, and the expression of $I{\kappa}B$ decreased in the C group. All measures, except $NF-{\kappa}B$, were restored in S25 group, but some measures deteriorated more in the S100 group than in the C group. Conclusions : According to the above results, it is supposed that SJT has a potential therapeutic effect on ulcerative colitis.
Geotechnical evaluation on the reactive drain pile which can achieve simultaneously both the soft ground improvement and the remediation of contaminated pore water in reclamation site was performed. Applicability of steel-making slag used as a inside reactive material was confirmed. To investigate the consolidation characteristics of the soft ground improved by reactive drain pile, testing devices to form and install the reactive drain pile were developed and laboratory tests were performed according to the existence of outside sand drain and the length of impermeable barrier. Test results showed that the consolidation time was decreased as the shortening of impermeable barrier. However, the effect of outside sand drain on consolidation time was dominant compared with the length of impermeable barrier.
