  • In this study, the colloidal stability and sedimentation behavior of crystalline $TiO_2$ particles (300nm) in various organic solvents have been investigated by means of a backscattered light flux profile (Turbiscan). The backscattered light flux profiles revealed that the $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were readily sedimented in water, methyl alcohol, and ethyl alcohol due to a flocculation-induced particle growth, while a particle coalescence and a sedimentation of the $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were hardly observed in isopropyl alcohol. The migration velocities of the $TiO_2$ particle were measured as around 6.15/min, 12.53 m/min, 6.51m/min, and 0.18m/min for water, methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, and isopropyl alcohol, respectively, showing a remarkably slow migration of the $TiO_2$ particles in isopropyl alcohol.

  • A study was made of the influence of butyl alcohol on the distribution coefficients of barium and mercury ions between the ion exchange resin, Dowex 50w-x8, 200~400 mesh and solutions containing hydrochloric acid, butyl alcohol and water. The determination of the distribution coefficients of barium and mercury are made by using the batch method. The distribution coefficients of metal ions decrease generally as the number of branches of carbon in the molecule of butyl alcohol increase. It shows that solubility in water and stereo-isomerism of the butyl alcohol have influence upon the distribution coefficient of barium and mercury.

  • The purpose of this research was to isolate an active component on immunoytes from 70% MeOH extract of Codonopsis lanceolatae Radix(CLE). CLE was fractionated successively with hexane, methylene chloride, n-butyl alcohol and water, and then the water fraction was separated with molecularporous membrane tubing(m.w. 3,500). Each fraction(50mg/kg) was administered p.o. once a day for 7 days in BALB/c mice respectively. None of these fractions affected the apoptosis and mitochondrial transmembrane potential in thymocyte. Hexane and methylene chloride fractions decreased CD4$^{[-10]}$ CD8$^{+}$ single-positive cells, and the water fraction enhanced CD4$^{+}$ CD8$^{[-10]}$ single-positive cells in thymocyte. The proliferation of thymocytes was decreased by the fraction hexane, but was enhanced by the water fraction. Hexane, methylene chloride and butyl alcohol fractions suppressed the production of nitric oxide, which was not affected by the water fraction. Hexane and butyl alcohol fraction suppressed the phagocytic activity, but water fraction enhanced it. The components(m.w. 3,500 above) separated from the water fraction enhanced the proliferation of thymocyte, the population of CD4$^{+}$ CDB$^{[-10]}$ single-positive cells, and phagocytic activity in macrophage. These results suggest that the stimulative components of proliferation, TH population and phagorytc activity is in the water fraction, and the molecular weight is 3,500 above. • Small angle light scattering (SALS) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) have been used to investigate the effects of alcohol on phase separation of chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride) (CPVC)/tetrahydrofuran (THF)/alcohol (9/61/30 wt%) solution during water vapor induced phase separation. A typical scattering pattern of nucleation & growth (NG) was observed for all casting solutions of CPVC/THF/alcohol. In the case of the phase separation of CPVC dope solution containing 30 wt% ethanol or n-propanol, the demixing with NG was observed to be heterogeneous. Meanwhile, the phase separation of CPVC dope solution with 30 wt% n-butanol was found to be predominantly homogeneous NG. Although the different phase separation behavior of NG was observed with types of alcohol additives, the resultant surface morphology had no remarkable differences. That is, even though the NG process by water vapor is either homogeneous or heterogeneous, this difference does not play a main role on the final surface morphology. However, it was estimated from the result of hydraulic flux that the phase separation by homogeneous NG provided the membrane geometry with lower resistance in comparison with that by heterogeneous one.

  • The present study was performed to evaluate the hangover relieving effect of germinated buckwheat (GB) and Sanghwang mushroom mycelium cultured in GB (SGB). Both GB and SGB showed 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activities and significantly increased (p < 0.001) aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) activities; up to 140% increase at concentrations of $16{\mu}L/mL$. Locomotor activity test results from alcohol-SGB and alcohol-GB groups showed improved motor activities over that of the alcohol-water group at 90 min post-administration. Both alcohol-GB and alcohol-SGB groups had significantly reduced (p < 0.001) alcohol ($40.02{\pm}33.38{\mu}g/mL$, $66.01{\pm}22.04{\mu}g/mL$, respectively) and aldehyde ($5.72{\pm}0.47{\mu}g/mL$, $6.72{\pm}1.70{\mu}g/mL$, respectively) concentrations in blood compared to those in the alcohol-water group ($199.75{\pm}33.83{\mu}g/mL$, $50.43{\pm}13.88{\mu}g/mL$, respectively) at 90 min post-administration. Based on cDNA microarray analysis, expressions of ALDH genes ALDH1a7 and ALDH18a1 and cytochrome P450 (CY450) gene CYP4a30b were upregulated in the alcohol-GB and alcohol-SGB groups compared to levels in the control group. Overall, the results suggest that both GB and SGB have hangover relieving effects by reducing blood acetaldehyde levels. The molecular mechanisms may involve ALDH activation and upregulated expression of alcohol metabolism-related genes such as ALDH and CYP450.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the hangover relieving effect of Sanghwang mushroom mycelium extract (SME). The extract showed 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging effect in a concentration-dependent manner and high antioxidant capacity ($56.67{\pm}1.77%$) when administered at $120{\mu}g/mL$. In addition, SME significantly increased (p < 0.005) the aldehyde dehydronase (ALDH) activity ($126.03{\pm}9.11%$) when applied at 8 or $16{\mu}L/mL$. A locomotor activity test showed that the alcohol-water treated group showed significantly decreased motor activity at 90 min post-administration. However, the alcohol-SME treated group showed a 20-fold higher motor activity than that observed in the alcohol-water treated group at 90 min post-administration. Blood was harvested from each mouse at 90 min post-administration, and both alcohol and aldehyde concentrations were measured. The alcohol-SME treated group showed significantly lower (p < 0.5) alcohol ($120.13{\pm}12.83{\mu}g/mL$) and aldehyde ($7.26{\pm}1.22{\mu}g/mL$) concentrations than the values observed in the alcohol-water treated group. These results suggest that the hangover relieving effect of SME results from increased ALDH activity, which reduces the aldehyde concentration in the blood.

  • Liquid-liquid equilibrium data for the quaternary system water +tetrahydrofuran + butyl acetate + isoamyl alcohol mixture were measured at 298.15 K and atmospheric pressure. Binodal curves, tie-lines, distribution, and selectivity for the quaternary system have been determined in order to investigate the effect of using binary solvents, butyl acetate and isoamyl alcohol, on extracting tetrahydrofuran from aqueous solution. In addition, these experimental tie-line data were also compared with the values predicted by the UNIFAC model. For the quaternary system, an average root-mean-square deviation for the system in 75/25, 50/50, and 25/75 mass ratios as mixed solvents are(3.35, 5.21 and 5.65) %, respectively.
