Sensitive Determination of Natural and Synthetic Steroidal Hormones of a Free and Conjugated Form in Surface Water by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry

  • A method based on the TMS derivatives and acidic hydrolysis was developed for the simultaneous determination of free and conjugated steroidal hormones in surface water. A silylation of five natural and two synthetic steroidal hormones was achieved with N-methyl-N-(trimethylsilyl) trifluoroacetamide/$NH_4I$ (1000:3) under catalysis of dithioerythritol for 60 min at $80^{\circ}C$. TMS derivatives of the steroid hormones containing multifunctional groups offer a single derivative product under this condition. The accuracy of the analytes was in the range of 87 to 110% at a concentration of 20 and 50 ng/L with relative standard deviations of less than 10%. The method detection limit was in the range of 0.01 to 0.02 ng/L for surface water. Natural steroidal hormones were detected in a concentration range of 0 to 1.03 ng/L in free form and 0 to 14.6 ng/L in conjugated form, respectively. We found that most of the natural hormonal steroids exist in conjugate forms (43 to 100%) in river water.

중학생을 위한 환경교육 e-Learning 콘텐츠 개발 (Environmental Education e-Learning Contents Development for the Middle School Students)

  • The purpose of the study is to develop e-Learning contents of environmental education for middle school students. The contents were developed based on literature review, the analysis of domestic and foreign programs and e-Learning contents on environmental education and expert advice. There are five main characteristics. First, this program has 12 sessions and is divided into six parts: introduction, air, water, animals and plants, soil, and resources and energy. Second, the contents were developed with consideration of middle school students' consist of optimized for learners by analyzing the needs of middle school students. Third, each part consists of five steps: "open", "unfold", "foster", "strengthen & refine", and "addition." Fourth, the contents have been developed in line with SCORM, an international standard for distnt education, to ensure reusability, accessibility, interoperability, and durability. Fifth, the contents are developed for blending online and off-line education. Developed program evaluated by 8 environmental education experts according to 10 evaluation item of total contents and contents development structure. In result, it evaluated comparatively high score.

대안학교의 생태중심주의 환경교육 실태 조사 (Survey on the Current Status of Ecocentric Environmental Education in Korean Alternative Schools)

  • 이 연구에서는 대안학교의 생태중심주의적인 환경 교육의 실태를 조사하였다. 전국 42개 대안학교의 홈페이지와 학교 안내책자를 통해 각 학교의 교육목표와 교육과정, 그리고 환경 활동을 조사하였다. 또한 추가적인 정보를 조사하기 위하여 대안학교 교사를 대상으로 면담도 실시하였다. 연구 결과 생태주의를 지향하는 학교의 비율은 상대적으로 낮았지만 42개 대안학교 중 36개교(85.7%)의 교육 목표에 생태주의를 직 간접적으로 포함하고 있었다. 39개교에서 환경 관련 교과를 편성하고 있었는데, 이 과목들은 평균적으로 주당 3시간씩 운영되었다. 대안학교에서 가장 빈번하게 사용되는 환경 활동은 분리수거였고, 다음으로는 일회용품 사용 줄이기와 친환경 및 재활용 용품 사용하기였다. 자체 정화조 사용하기와 대체 에너지 사용하기도 환경 활동으로 실천되고 있었다. 이에 대한 교육적 함의를 논의하였다.

상류수계 영산강 하상퇴적물의 지화학적 특성과 오염 (Geochemical Characteristics and Contamination of Surface Sediments in Upper Yeongsan River System)

  • In order to investigate the geochemical characteristics of surface sediments in streams of upper Yeongsan River drainage system, sediment samples from the main stream of Yeongsan river, Hwangryong river, Gwangju and Jiseok streams were collected and analyzed for grain size and metal and organic carbon contents. The metal contents in the sediments are mainly dependent on organic matter contents in the domestic sewage, grain size of the sediments and geology around the streams. Enrichment factor (EF) and index of geoaccumulation (Igeo) representing the degree of metal contamination in the sediments are relatively low in the main stream of Yeongsan river main stream, Hwangryong river and Jiseok stream. However, those of Gwangju stream show the EF maximum values of P=8.30, Cu=5.55, Zn=14.29 and Pb=7.45 and the Igeo maximum values of P=3.58, Cu=4.43, Zn=3.22 and Pb=1.59.

유전체 장벽 방전 플라즈마 방전수의 특성과 미생물 소독에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Microorganism Disinfection and Characteristics of Discharged Water of Dielectric Barrier Discharge Plasma Systems)

  • Objectives: This experiment was carried out to elucidate the effect of discharged water on the disinfection of $Phytophthora$ $capsici$ and evaluate the water characteristics. Methods: The dielectric barrier discharges (DBD) plasma reactor system used in this study consisted of a plasma component [discharge, ground electrode and quartz dielectric tube], high voltage source, and air supply. The effects of water characteristics such as pH, ORP and conductivity and the disinfection effect of discharged water were investigated. Results: Experimental results showed that in the process of discharge, the pH decreased, whereas ORP and electric conductivity increased. When the discharge time was 30 min, $Phytophthora$ $capsici$ of 2.94 log was disinfected within 300 seconds. Disinfection performance of stored discharged water was maintained for three days; however the disinfection effect vanished after five days. When $Phytophthora$ $capsici$ was injected into the discharged water, the disinfection effect decreased after two days. Conclusions: It is considered that the main disinfection parameters of the discharged water were chemically active species such as $H_2O_2$ and $O_3$ and high ORP.

중학교 학생들의 환경에 대한 태도 연구 (A Study on the Recognition of the Environmental Matters by Korean Middle School Students)

  • This result showed that the middle school students' response for the environment condition was highly negative. The major findings of this study are as follows. 1. Students would become to know the environmental pollution through reading of newspapers and TV rather than school education. 2. Students' response for air and water pollution was seriously accepted in city areas than in country areas, and in large cities than in small cities. 3. Students' response for air pollution showed that the quality of air was getting worse and major factor of air pollution was the exhausts of automobiles. 4. It showed that students' concern for water pollution was increased and water pollution was being accelerated by the increase of domestic and industrial sewages, the overuse of the agricultural chemicals, the entrophication and acid rain. 5. Students thought that soil pollution was mainly due to factory sewage, life sewage, heavy metal and agricultural medicines and so on. But now they think it is due to the degenerated and inseparable things such as used vinyle for farm and plastics. 6. Most students thought of the pollution of our country as serious. But they thought it could be removed if we tried to get rid of pollution. 7. Now students' consciousness to protect the nature took an active interest turn and was strong. Putting these various findings together, I suggested that, the efforts to turn students affirmative consciousness for the environment and a powerful plan by the nation to take off pollution should be needed. Also the education to enforce the environment preservation had to be needed.

물이끼(Sphagnum palustre) 생육이 가능한 인공습지 사례보고 (A Case Report on the Constructed Wetland for the Growth of Sphagnum palustre)

  • Construction of an artificial wetland for the growth of Sphagnum palustre with emergent macrophytes (Phragmites australis, Typha angustifolia, and Zizania latifolia) was firstly tried and the growth of those plant components according to various environmental combinations has been monitored for three years. Above-ground dry weight of Z. latifolia ($1,500g/m^2$) was higher than T. angustifolia ($900g/m^2$) and P. australis ($500g/m^2$) under most environmental conditions. In overall, planted emergent macrophytes seemed to prefer polishing sand without moss peat as a substrate and relatively deep water-depth condition (20cm) rather than shallow water-depth (5cm). Despite of high calcium content in inflow water (> 15ppm) into the constructed wetland, S. palustre populations have survived in most experimental plots during the monitoring period. Substrate layer including moss peat with high surface-area might play a role as an ion-filter. After three years, relatively thicker litter-layer in Z. latifolia plots due to vigorous growth appeared to heavily depress S. palustre by physical compressing and complete shading processes. Most of all, for the continuous growth of S. palustre, physio-chemical characteristics of water and substrate must be carefully managed. In addition, companion emergent species should be also cautiously selected not to depress S. palustre by much litter production. We suggest P. australis and T. angustifolia as companion species rather than Z. latifolia.

학교 생태감사의 이론적 고찰과 도입방안 연구 (A Study on the Methodology and Application of the School Eco-Audit System)

  • The purpose of this study is to consider for the introduction of the school eco-audit system as an educational method for sustainable development. First of all, the concept and objective of the education for sustainable development(ESD) are reviewed in order to advance a theory on school eco-audit system. ESD which under the premise of global inter and intra generation justice, resolves to address a mixture of ecological, economical and social aspects, as well as safeguarding limited resources and protecting the environment from pollution and energy. In order to effectively structure uncoordinated environmental activities carried out by schools, the introduction of school eco-audit system in Korea is suggested, which as the model for long-term development, has since been integrated into the school's programme. Activities related to waste, heating, electricity and water are run by a 'Management Team'. By combining all 3 fields of action - i.e. establishing basic organizational conditions, education, and individual ecological measures - the eco-audit proves to be the key to success. In particular, administration agency and method, institutional improvement are presented.

유아교육기관의 환경보전 부모교육프로그램 효과연구 (The Effectiveness of a Child-Care Centers' Based Parent Education Program on Environmental Preservation)

  • Training for mothers and children first included information on water, ground, and air pollution, saving energy, and reducing trash. In the second phase, the family followed steps outlined in an environmental preservation guidebook. The experiment was of 16 weeks duration, conducted with 120 subjects, comprised of sixty 4-year-old children and their mothers. Measures included environmental preservation knowledge and the actual practice of environmental preservation on the part of the subjects. Mothers performed self-evaluations while teachers measured the children. SPSS was used for data collection and analysis. The results of this study indicate that the program increased perceptions on environmental preservation and the actual practice of the experimental group. The program application also resulted in meaningful co-relationships between perceptions and practice and between mothers and their children.

  • To examine the sedimentary geochemical characteristics of sediment in the Tamjin River and Doam bay, the analysis was conducted, using the sample obtained in February 2000, on the grain size and the contents of metallic elements and organic carbon. The factors that influence the geochemical behavior of metallic elements in the surface sediment are grain size, organism, surrounding soil and $CaCO_3$. To find out the pollution level of metallic elements, the enrichment factor (EF) and the index of geoaccumulation ($I_{geo}$) were researched. The majority of metallic elements sustain their values in natural state. The elements such as K, Ba, Zr, etc. appear to be rich in some places. The EF and $I_{geo}$ of P, Cu, Zn, and Pb, which belong to toxic heavy metals, are partly related with man-made pollution. P and Cu have a high EF, Pb has a high $I_{geo}$ and Zn is high in both EF and $I_{geo}$. The low contents of P and Cu are not likely to be related with the pollution of water environment. However, given the development of relative pollution, the research and the management regarding the pollutants are needed. Because Pb, naturally enriched by geological characteristics, has a large influence on water environment along with Zn, the adequate measures against man-made pollution should be worked out.
