For the last two decades, Seoul has always been affected by large floods. As climate change causes more frequent localized heavy rains exceeding the capacity of sewer or river to discharge water, flood damage is expected to increase. Under the situation, detention facilities for lacking capacity of sewers can control stormwater runoff to reduce flood damage in urbanized areas. In this study, in order to reduce flood damage in Cheonggyecheon areas, the capacity of detention facilities was decided to make up for the lacking capacity of main sewers in case of the rainfall in July, 2001 as large flood. The average amount of stormwater detained in eight Cheonggyecheon drainage areas is $235.09m^3/ha$. Location and size of stormwater detention facilities is designed to have effects in short term by targeting the reduction of flood damage. Schools and parks are suggested as optimal locations where detention facilities are constructed in drainage areas.
Water extract from Pinus densiflora (WPD) was investigated for its antioxidant activity and its ability to provide protection from DNA damage. A series of antioxidant assays, including a 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical-scavenging assay, a reducing power assay, a metal-chelating assay, a superoxide radical scavenging assay, and a nitrite scavenging ability, as well as a DNA damage protection assay were performed. Total phenolic content was found to be 211.32 mg Tan/g WPD. The extract scavenged 50% DPPH free radical at a concentration of 21.35 ${\mu}g/mL$. At that same concentration, the reducing power ability of WPD was higher than that of ${\alpha}$-tocopherol. The extract chelated 68.9% ferrous ion at the concentration of 4 mg/mL. WPD showed better nitrite scavenging effect at the lower pH. Meanwhile, WPD exhibited a strong capability for DNA damage protection at 1 mg/mL concentration. Taken together, these data suggest water extract from Pinus densiflora could be used as a suitable natural antioxidant.

The use of gas absorption refrigeration machine has considerably increased because of the shortage of the electric power in the summer and the regulation of freon refrigerant. Gas absorption refrigeration machine consists of a condenser, a heat exchanger. supplying pipes, a radiator etc, This system is likely to be corroded by acid. dissolved oxygen and gases, Cavitation erosion-corrosion by flow velocity of cooling water may happen in absorption refrigeration machine. In these cases. erosion and corrosion occur simultaneously. Then, it makes a serious damage with synergy effect. Therefore, this paper was studied on the cavitation damage of cupronickel(70/30) tube for gas absorption refrigeration machine, In the $30^{\circ}C$ tap water, linear polarization test and anodic polarization test were carried out for copper(C1220T-OL) and cupronickel(70/30) tube. Also, cavitation erosion-corrosion behavior of cupronickel (70/30) tube was considered, The main results are as following: (1) In the linear test, the corrosion current density of cupronickel(70/30) is higher than that of copper. (2) The erosion-corrosion rate of cupronickel(70/30) displayed later tendency than that of copper by vibratory cavitation in cooling water. (3) In cooling water, the progress mechanism of erosion-corrosion rate of copper and cupronickel(70/30) follows a pattern of incubation, acceleration, attenuation and a steady state period.
Among aging diseases, the most basic problem is a decrease in bone mineral density. Patients with osteoporosis are steadily increasing in the world. This study was investigated to show the relationship between osteoporotic effects and oxidative damage. Water extracts of 15 medicinal plants and ethanol extracts of 14 medicinal plants with known anti-osteoporotic effects, were tested for their radical scavenging activity using DPPH, ABTS, SRSA and FRAP assay. Water extract of Cornus officinalis, Rubus coreanus and ethanol extract of Rubus coreanus, Viscium album var. coloratum, Cimicifuga heracleifolia showed about 15-20 mg/g of total phenolic contents. Water extract of Cornus officinalis, Rubus coreanus and Epimedium koreanum showed high radical scavenging activity. Ethanol extract of Drynaria fortunei, Cornus officinalis, Rubus coreanus, Gentiana scabra and Astragalus membranaceus showed high radical scavenging activity. Water extract of Drynaria fortunei, Cornus officinalis, Nelumbo nucifera, Epimedium koreanum, and Gentiana scabra showed very strong protective effect against oxidative damage to DNA. These results suggest the correlation between anti-osteoporotic effects and antioxidative effects.
In this paper, the characteristics of a cavitation-erosion damage behavior on the STS 304 and hot-dip aluminized STS 304 under cavitation environment in sea water solution was investigated. The electrochemical experiments were carried out by potential measurement, anodic/cathodic polarization test, Tafel analysis, and also galvanostatic experiment in current density variables for the samples. The apparatus of cavitation-electrochemical experiment was manufactured in compliance with modified ASTM G-32 standard, with the conditions of sea water temperature of $25^{\circ}C$ and the measurement, amplitude of $30{\mu}m$. The damage behavior was analyzed by an observation of surface mophologies and a measurement of damage depth by a scanning electron microscope(SEM) and a 3D microscope, respectively, after electrochemical test. After polarization experiment under cavitation environment, much higher damage depths for the hot-dip aluminized STS 304 were observed comparing to the untreated STS 304. In addition, higher corrosion current density in hot-dip aluminized STS 304 presented than that of untreated STS 304 as a result of Tafel analysis.
The present study was attempted to investigate the antioxidant capacity of popular yellow-green vegetable juices (kale, Angelica keishei, carrot, small water dropwort) and to investigate the effect of vegetable juices on protecting oxidative damage to DNA in cultured Chinese hamster lung (CHL) cells. Antioxidant capacity was analyzed by TRAP assay (Total radical-trapping antioxidant potential). Cellular DNA dmamage was measured by SCGE (single-cell gel electrophoresis, also known as comet assay. Cells incubated in medium with PBS (negative control) or with various concentration of the freeze dried green juices (25, 50, 100, 250 $\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$) resuspended in PBS were treated with $H_2O_2$ (200 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) as an oxidative stimulus for 5 min at 4$^{\circ}C$. The physiological function of each vegetable juice on oxidative DNA damage was analyzed and expressed as tail moment (tail length X percentage migrated DNA in tail) . Kale juice had the highest TRAP value suggesting that kale has the highest antioxidant capacity followed by Angelica keishei, small water dropwort and carrot. Cells treated with $H_2O_2$ had extensive DNA damage compared with cells treated with PBS or pre-treated with vegetable juice extracts. All green juices inhibited $H_2O_2$-induced DNA damage with kale being the most effective juice among the tested juices. These results indicate that green juice supplementation to CHL cells followed by oxidative stimulus inhibited damage to cellular DNA, supporting a protective effect against oxidative damage induced by reactive oxygen species. Over 2,000 ha of rice fields in the western and southern coastal region of Korea were flooded with sea water during the spring tide, on August 19-21, 1997, and the rice plant at heading stage was injured. The field surveys were undertaken at the sea water flooded paddy fields in Chonbuk Province, to identify the injury symptoms and rice yield damage subjected to different flooding condition and desalinization methods. Five days after sea water flooding at heading stage, the flag leaves of rice plants flooded with 30 ㎝ deep sea water withered from the tip, the withering progressed to the lower leaves in deeper flooding. The spikelets were spotted black and discolored from the tip at 50 ㎝ deep flooded rice, and some panicles changed to white at 80 ㎝ deep flooded rice. Most of the rice leaves submerged completely for an hour were withered and most of panicles changed to white. The milled rice yield, percentage of ripened grain, and 1000 grain weight of flooded rice decreased with deeper flooding water, higher water salinity and longer flooding time. Even under the same flooding conditions, the damage of rice yield varied with the growth stage: heading stage>dough stage>booting stage. Rice yield damage was less in the fields on the upper riverside than those of the fields on the estuary and seaside, because of lower water salinity. In a flooded field, the rice yield damages were reduced as the distance increased from the levees where the sea water inflowed and increased as the distance increased from the fresh water irrigation gate. The desalinization treatments consisting of frequent exchange of irrigation water and spraying with fresh water soon after flooding effectively reduced the rice yield damage.
The fresh water and sea water in present ships is used as cooling water for marine engine. Therefore, corrosion damage in seawater system is frequently occurred. In particular, in the impeller of pump, the performance and material span due to the corrosion and cavitation erosion has adverse effects. Most of the pump impellers in vessels are used Cu-Al alloy. Cu-Al alloy which having the excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance is widely used in marine environments. However, despite the excellent characteristics, the periodic replacement parts due to the cavitation damage in seawater is vulnerable to economic viewpoint. In this study, Cu-Al alloy used with impeller for centrifugal pump were conducted various experiments to evaluate its characteristics in seawater and fresh water solutions. As an electrochemical result, the dynamic conditions that exposed to the cavitation environment presented high corrosion current density with collapse of the cavity compared with the static conditions. Cavitation test results, the weightloss and weightloss rate in fresh water are observed more than those of seawater.
