Control of Turbid Water Transport with Filamentous Mat in Lake (섬모상 매트에 의한 저수지와 댐에서 탁수확산차단 기술의 개발)

  • This study presented a lab-scale apparatus for turbidity control in the lakes or reservoirs. Overall, the filamentous mat had a capture efficiency of 70~90% compared with the control group. Generally, the capture efficiency decreased with improved input turbidity flux. However, the attachment and sedimentation were thought to be the main processes for turbidity water retention and removal. Thus, the increase of hydraulic detention time in the mat zone is very important to improve the capture efficiency of the turbidity water.

  • The effects of salt are studied on control of weeds and growth of Korean turfgrass(Zoysia japon-ica Steud.). And the mobility of salt were determined in a lawn field. At post-emergence stage, the growth of the 13 weeds such as Trifolium repens, Erigeron canadensis, Artemisia prieceps, Equi-setum arvense, etc were controlled by treatment of salt and salt water, Pea-annua and Equisetum arvense were tolerant to salt compared with the other 11 weeds. At pre-emergence stage, the salt controlled the germination of the weeds in soil. 300~500 kg /10a salt and 20~30 % salt waterwere enough for the control of weeds, However, salt water injuried the lawngrass except the dormancy stage. The mobility of salt in soil was increased by rainfall. After 160mm of rainfall, the salinity in the soil treated with salt 500kg /l0a was below 0.3 ms/cm in surface soil and about 0.1 ms /cm in soil 30 cm depth. Effects of Fermented Milk on Rats Fed by Hypercholesterolemic Diet (유산균 발효유가 콜레스테롤을 투여한 백서(흰쥐)에 미치는 영향)

  • Effects of fermented milk were tested in Sprague-Dawley male rats. In six treatment 150 rats were fed for 12 months: (1) normal control synthetic pellets+water, (2) cholesterol control synthetic pellets containing 1% of cholesterol and 500, 000 IU of vitamin D2/100 g (cholesterol pellets) +water, (3) cholesterol pellets+25% fermented milk, (4) cholesterol pellets+50% fermented milk, (5) cholesterol pellets+75% fermented milk, (6) cholesterol pellets+100% fermented milk. In 3, 6, 9, 12 months, rats were sacrificed for analysis of samples. Rats received the fermented milk had significantly lower (p<0.05) serum cholesterol levels and higher ratios of HDL-cholesterol to total cholesterol than did the water fed rats. Stomach, heart, abdominal aorta and kidney of rat from fermented milk group showed slighter calcification or necrosis than did those of rat from cholesterol control group. Weight gain, diet intake, and drink consumption were significantly different among groups. Results indicate that fermented milk had a helpful effect of experimental hypercholesteremia and atherosclerosis.

Changes in Enzyme Activities and Population of Lactic Acid Bacteria during the Kimchi Fermentation Supplemented with Water Extract of Pine Needle (솔잎(Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc.) 물추출물 첨가김치의 숙성 중 젖산균수와 효소활성의 변화)

  • To understand the effect of supplement of water extract of pine needle(WEPN) on shelf-life enhancement of the kimchi, activities of four enzymes and number of lactic acid bacteria, during fermentation of the kimchi, were assayed. Enzyme activities of kimchi fermented for 7 days with supplement by 2% water extract of pine needle showed amylase of 86.4%, protease of 85.8%, polygalacturonase of 61.5% and $\beta$-galactosidase of 58.8% against the control kimchi. WEPN showed weak inhibitory effect when it was applied to the isolated enzymes in vitro then those menifested by the kimchi in vivo. Number of total bacterial cell of WEPN supplemented kimchi increased by 10 folds than control between 7 to 14 days of fermentation. On contrast, number of lactic acid bacteria decreased maximaly to 21% of control by fermentation. The clear zone formed on paper disk by WEPN against L. plantarum was larger than that of Leu. mesenteroides.

The control of point and non-point source nitrogen to prevent eutrophication of the Nakdong River basin, Korea

  • Eutrophication of surface waters is commonly caused by excessive inputs of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus. Nakdong River basin was chosen as the study area to investigate the effect of point and non-point source pollution of nitrogen on eutrophication in water body. Non-point source inputs of nitrogen accounted for approximately 84% in the total nitrogen input of the upper Nakdong river watershed, which mainly consists of agricultural land and forests. However, point source inputs of nitrogen accounted for 58~85% in the total nitrogen input of the middle and lower watersheds, including urban area. Therefore, for watershed near urban area, control of point source inputs of nitrogen may be an optimal method to control eutrophication. In this respect, the enforcing reduction of nitrogen in the final effluent of wastewater treatment facilities is needed. On the other hand, to enact more stringent nitrogen regulations, the LOT (limit of technology) and environmental impact should be considered. In this study nitrogen data were analyzed to propose new nitrogen regulations.

  • In the present study, the possibility of continuous slurry ice making using flowing water solution in a cooled tube has been investigated. The experiments were carried out at various concentration and velocity of water solution, temperature of cooled tube wall, and control pressure in a tube. As a result, four types of operating conditions, that is super-cooling, continuous ice making, intermittent ice making and ice blockage, were classified. And it was found that the critical condition for the continuous ice making was acquired as a function of these experimental parameters.

  • This study is a seismic analysia of absorber rod in KMRR Reactivity Control Mechanism. The model being studied i8 two coaxial tubes (control absorber rod and flow tube) immersed in the water and partially coupled (overlap) by water Hap. The hydrodynamic mass effects by the water in each surrounding conditions are considered in the model. The natural frequencies, stresses and displacements of the system due to Safe Shutdown Earthquake are computed in the cases of in-phase modes and out-of-phase modes of two coaxial tubes. The results show that maximum stresses are well below the allowable limit and maximum displacements at the ends of both tubes in out-of-phase modes are so huck that the tubes contact each other in the overlap zone.

  • A characteristic behavior of the thermal storage tank for varying thermal load in heat pump water heater was studied. The control method was suggested and applied. By measuring the temperature within the storage tank, the heat pump was ON/OFF controlled. The appropriate measuring position and the size of heat exchanger gives the minimized power consumption of heat pump. As the length of heat exchanger increases, the temperature measuring position goes down of the storage tank and the power consumption increases.

  • Foundational experiments are conducted to examine the applicability of redox control in brak-point chlorination of ammonia on drinking water purification. Through the research, the behauial affects by ph and temperature to a chloromine forming reactions are evaluated. The possibility of redox control in breakpoint chlorination is recoguized by drawing up the titration curve in terms of redox potential and $C{\ell}_2$/N ratios.

  • In this paper, we propose a fuzzy controller design method for the water level control of the power plant drum in the form of nominimum phase system The proposed method is based on T. Takagi and H. Sugeno's fuzzy model. And we illustrate the improved characteristics as the simulation results, comparing with the conventional the PID and LQ controller design methods.
