  • Prebiotics are known as components of intestinal microbiota that can improve and maintain human health status by stimulating the growth and activity of the intestinal tract as a method of controlling the intestinal environment. In this study, we examined whether 2'-fucosyllactose (FL) could affect intestinal microbial population and bowel activity. Water content and frequency of mouse feces were increased in the 2'-FL treated group at a high concentration (1,000 mg/kg), with brightness of the color enhanced and physical properties diluted. In addition, intestinal microbial analysis showed that harmful bacteria Clostridium and Staphylococcus strains were decreased and beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus strains were markedly increased in the group treated with a high concentration of 2'-FL compared to those in the control group. These findings suggest that administration of 2'-FL can maintain healthy bowel activity by reducing harmful bacteria population and improving diluted physical properties.

  • Objective: This study was performed to evaluate the quality characteristics of pork sausage (PS) with sea tangle extract (STE) and rapid chilled pre-rigor muscle (RCPM) for the development of reduced-salt low-fat sausage. Methods: Pre- and post-rigor pork ham muscles were prepared to process PSs. Positive control (reference, REF) using post-rigor muscle were manufactured at a regular-salt level of 1.5%. Fresh and rapid-chilled pre-rigor muscle (FPM and RCPM) were used to manufacture reduced-salt sausages with 0.8% salt. Reduced-salt PSs were prepared with four treatments: FT1 (FPM alone), FT2 (FPM with 5% STE), RT1 (RCPM alone), and RT2 (RCPM with 5% STE). The physicochemical and textural properties of the sausages with reduced-salt levels and RCPM combination were measured to determine if the characteristics of RCPM were similar to those with FPM. Results: The pH values of PS with FPM and RCPM were higher than those of REF with post-rigor muscle. Color values (L*, a*, b*) were not affected by different rigor-states and salt addition level. Textural properties of reduced-salt PSs were similar to those of REF due to the improved functionalities of pre-rigor muscle. RT2 had lower expressible moisture (%) than other treatments with post-rigor muscle and RCPM except for RT1. Conclusion: The addition of STE and RCPM to reduced-salt PS increased the water-holding capacity, which was lower than those of PS with STE using RCPM but similar to those of regular-salt sausage.

  • This research presents a methodology to define and apply appropriate index that can measure the risk of regional flood damage. Pressure-State-Response structure has been used to develop the Flood Risk Index(FRI), which allows for a comparative analysis of flood risk assessment between different sub-basins. FRI is a rational assessment method available to improve disaster preparedness and the prevention of losses. The pressure and state index for flood at 117 sub-basins from the year 1980s until the t 10s showed proportional relations, but state index did not decrease even though response index increased. This shows that pressures for flood damage relatively exceed countermeasure for flood. Thus this means we need to strengthen design criteria for flood countermeasure in the future. The FRI is gradually going down in consequence of continuous flood control projects. Flood risk of Han River and Nakdong River area is relatively lower than that of Geum, Seumjin, and Youngsan River area.

  • In this study, the distribution, bait preference, hosts, symbionts, habitat status, and cytochrome c oxidase subunit-I sequences of the ant Linepithema humile were analyzed. This species habitat comprised approximately 1.5 km along stone crevices, flower gardens, roadsides, and container yards in the vicinity of Busan station, Korea. Feeding activity of this species was confirmed in 9 species of 7 families of plants. Which was approximately 14% of total flora (63 species of 37 families) in the studied area. Particularly, it was observed that Dendranthema indicum and Camellia japonica were the most frequently visited. Further, we verified that they interacted with four species of aphids. We identified 22 species of ants (17 genera, 4 subfamilies) inhabiting the Busan station area, including L. humile, Tetramorium tsushimae, Nylanderia flavipes and the alien species Paratrechina longicornis. In areas where L. humile was the dominant species, the habitat of local native ants was reduced by approximately 30%. Bait preference was ranked in the following order: jelly, water with glucose (25%), and yogurt, with the highest preference for baits containing sugar and protein. The 630-bp cytochrome c oxidase subunit-I sequences of the local L. humile populations were 99% identical to those of L. humile in the National Center for Biotechnology Information database, and the Argentine ants that invaded Korea had a sequence identical to that of other invasive populations from China, Japan, and New Zealand. As L. humile rapidly increases due to domestic adaptation, continuous monitoring and control strategy for eradication are needed to protect domestic biodiversity.

  • According to the 2020 Global Climate Report released by the World Meteorological Organization, the average temperature of the Earth in 2019 was measured 1.1℃ higher on average than the temperature measured between 1850 and 1900 before industrialization. The change in average temperature affects the distribution of plants, and according to the vulnerability analysis paper, it can be seen that there is a change in the distribution area of plants when the average temperature rises. In this paper, to cope with these environmental changes, we propose a method of fabricating intermittent flow hydroponic smart farms using Arduino and sensors and controlling them through PCs and applications. The manufactured hydroponic smart farm identifies the farm's temperature and humidity, positive pH concentration, illumination, and water quality to check the amount of pumping, supplement LED control, sensor condition, overall management and cultivation of the farm, and grows in an appropriate environment.

  • An urban inundation model coupling an one-dimensional stormwater model, SWMM(Storm Water Management Model), and a two-dimensional inundation model was developed to simulate inundation caused by the surcharge of storm sewers in urban areas. The limitation of this model which can not simulate the interaction between drainage systems and surcharged flow was resolved by developing Dual-Drainage inundation analysis model which was based upon hydraulic flow routing procedures for surface flow and pipe flow. The Dual-Drainage inundation analysis model can simulate the effect of complex storm drainage system. The developed model was applied to Dorim, catchment. The computed inundated depth and area have good agreement with the observed data during the flood events. The developed model can help the decision support system of flood control authority for redesigning and constructing flood prevention structures and making the potential inundation zone, and establishing flood-mitigation measures.

  • In this study, classification of streams was conducted for Ji Stream, a tributary to the Geum River and Yo Stream, a tributary to the Seomjin River, and in addition, channel evolution model to the same streams was applied. The classification approaches suggested by Rosgen and Korea Institute of Construction Technology (KICT) were conducted. The channel evolution model suggested by Schumm et al. (1984) was applied. Based on the application results of Rosgen approach, Ji Stream and Yo stream show the characteristics of mountainous stream with pebbles. The application results of channel evolution model indicated that the current condition of Ji Stream and Yo Stream is a state of equilibrium, balancing the sediment supply and sediment transport capacity. The results of this study can be used as a fundamental data for water control project, river restoration and appropriate channel planning.

  • Recently, flood damages have increased with heavy rainfall and typhoon influences, and it requires that visualization information to the flood inundation area of downstream in dam discharge. This study developed 3D GIS system that can visualize flood inundation area for Namgang Dam downstream. First, DEMs extracted from NGIS digital maps and IKONOS satellite images were optimized to mount in iWorld engine using TextureMaker and HeightMaker modules. And flood inundation area of downstream could be efficiently extracted with real-time flooding water level using Coordinate Operation System for Flood control In Multi-reservoir (COSFIM) and Flood Wave routing model (FLDWAV) in river cross section. This visualization information of flood inundation area can be used to examine flood weakness district needed in real time Dam operation and be applied to establish the rapid flood disaster countermeasures efficiently.

  • The performance of high-early strength pavement concrete for large areas is influenced by the physical and chemical environment during service life. Generally, penetration, diffusion, and absorption of harmful materials that exist outside the concrete cause damage to its structure. Thus, we have to use a mixture for durability to keep the required quality for the planned service life. Moreover, in using high-early-strength cement and accelerators, a high heat of hydration to create the initial strength can cause cracks. Based on evaluations from optimal mix proportions of high-early-strength pavement concrete for large areas, we conducted water permeability, abrasion resistance, freeze-thaw, plastic, drying, and autogenous shrinkage tests. Test result showed that a mix of accelerator and PVA fibers showed excellent performance.
