RECYCLING OPTION SEARCH FOR A 600-MWE SODIUM-COOLED TRANSMUTATION FAST REACTOR

  • Four recycling scenarios involving pyroprocessing of spent fuel (SF) have been investigated for a 600-MWe transmutation sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR), KALIMER. Performance evaluation was done with code system REBUS connected with TRANSX and TWODANT. Scenario Number 1 is the pyroprocessing of Canada deuterium uranium (CANDU) SF. Because the recycling of CANDU SF does not have any safety problems, the CANDU-Pyro-SFR system will be possible if the pyroprocessing capacity is large enough. Scenario Number 2 is a feasibility test of feed SF from a pressurized water reactor PWR. Thefsensitivity of cooling time before prior to pyro-processing was studied. As the cooling time sensitivity of cooling time before prior to pyro-processing was studied. As the cooling time increases, excess reactivity at the beginning of the equilibrium cycle (BOEC) decreases, thereby creating advantageous reactivity control and improving the transmutation performance of minor actinides. Scenario Number 3 is a case study for various levels of recovery factors of transuranic isotopes (TRUs). If long-lived fission products can be separated during pyroprocessing, the waste that is not recovered is classified as low- and intermediate-level waste, and it is sufficient to be disposed of in an underground site due to very low-heat-generation rate when the waste cooling time becomes >300 years at a TRU recovery factor of 99.9%. Scenario Number 4 is a case study for the recovery factor of rare earth (RE) isotopes. The RE isotope recovery factor should be lowered to ${\leq}20%$ in order to make sodium void reactivity less than <7$, which is the design limit of a metal fuel.

Biological Improvement of Reclaimed Tidal Land Soil(IV) Changes of Saline Soil by addition of Organic Acids (해안간척지 토양의 생물학적 토성개선에 관한 연구 (제4보) 유기산첨가에 따르는 토양성분의 제 변화에 대하여)

  • In the previous paper(part III), a certian relationships between the changes of chlorinity and organic acid released from organic material were seemed to be concened to each other in saline soil suspension. Such a possibility had been a cause to take this experiments and this experiment was carried out under the treatment of organic acid crystal, oxalic acid and succinic acid, to the soil suspension(soil: water=20g:40cc) directly. The amount of organic acid treated to the suspension were related to the contents of organic material, as amount of organic acid per gram of organic material(391.76mg). The saline soil suspension were grouped and treated with the acids in order of 78.35mg(Group 1), 391.76mg(Group 2) 979.4mg(Group 3), and 1958.8mg(Group 4), respectively. Treated suspension had been incubated at room temperature and extract from suspension was used for analysis. Followings are summary of this report. 1) Changes of pH in soil suspension appeared a little increase after the treatment of organic acid until 168 hours. 2) Total acidity of soil suspension showed a variation, however, the values of total acidity appeared not to be increased or decreased during the period of experiment. 3) Sugar contents of soil suspension was increased until 168 hours after treatment. These results are similar tendency to the previous paper. 4) Addition of organic acid to soil suspension was confirmed not to be effective method for desalination from saline soil. Chlorinity of group 3 and 4 which were treated with high concentration of organic acid showed a decrease comparing to control group.

Fusion-Complex Activity of Camellia extract (동백 열수추출물의 융복합 활성)

  • To determine fusion-complex activity of Camellia extract extracted hot water, this study was conducted. Special catechin was identified at this extract by analysis of catechin. In analysis of antioxidant activity, the extract was contained antioxidant material and flower among the other parts showed high antioxidant activity. flavonoid showed most high content of Camellia. Flavonoid content was found to be $223.29{\pm}0.005mg/g$ to measured most high to stem, a control group was measured Green tea new leaves $126.14{\pm}0.005mg/g$. Total polyphenol content exhibited most high content at new leaves and flavonoid showed most high content at stem. ${\gamma}$-Amino butyric acid (GAVA) among the free amino acid showed highly at all parts.

  • Proteomics is a useful approach to know protein expression, post-translational modification and protein function. We investigated the protein expression pattern and identity in chickens fed with the tissue culture medium waste after harvest of Korean wild ginseng (TCM-KWG) (Panax ginseng). Two groups (n=60/group) of day old broiler chickens were administered with 0 (control) and 0.8% (treatment) TCM-KWG through drinking water. After 5 weeks, we examined the protein expression pattern of fibularis longus and superficial pectoral muscle by Two-dimensional electrophoresis analysis. Interestingly, TCM-KWG treatment significantly increased five spot's density, and markedly reduced five spot's density in the muscles. We identified 10 proteins (desmin, myosin light chain 1, heat shock 25 kDa protein, collapsin response mediator protein-2A, alpha enolase, vimentin, actin alpha 1, my023 protein, pyruvate kinase and troponin T) by the matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight (MALDI-TOF).

Immunomodulating Effect of Edible Mushrooms in Mice (식용버섯의 면역조절에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the immunomodulatory capacity of edible mushrooms, including Lepista nuda, Corprinis comatus, Letinus edodes, and Pleurotus eryngii, in mice. BALB/c mice were administered 1, 50, and 500 mg/kg body weight of various mushrooms five times a week over 4 weeks through gastric intubation. The control mice were administered distilled water. No significant changes in body weight were observed. IL-4 and IFN${\gamma}$ production was evaluated with splenic T lymphocytes stimulated in vitro with phytohemagglutinins for 48 hr. The mice group administered L. edodes showed significantly higher ratio of IFN${\gamma}$ versus IL-4 than the other groups. In addition, the ratio of plasma IgG2a versus IgG1 was also significantly elevated in mice treated with L. edodes. However, no significant change was observed in ratio of IgG2a versus IgG1 in splenic B lymphocytes stimulated in vitro with lipopolysaccharides for 7 days. These results indicate that L. edodes can enhance type-1 helper T cell-mediated cellular immunity.

  • Template has been widely used for hull forming process in most of shipyards. It is used to estimate the curvature of deformed shape in comparison with design shape. SHI (Samsung Heavy Industry) had used AutoKon system for ship manufacturing design in the past. The AutoKon used the global coordinate system of ship (frame, water line and so on) to create template data. It brought the mismatched angles between templates and a curved shell plate. The mismatched angle is measured by forming worker to place template on shell forming stage. However, the mismatched angle is difficult to place template with exactly required angle because the shell plates have various curvature and size. It causes incorrect shape of formed shell plates. The attached angle of template should be 90 degree to place template easily on forming shell plates. Currently, SHI has been applied GSCAD for ship manufacturing design process which is 3D solid modeling system. The GSCAD is the rule-based system which can automate 3D modeling and control the manufacturing data by rule. The rule can easily provide methods to create and automate template object with regular attached angle in comparison with AutoKon system. Therefore, SHI developed new template rule which it can automatically create template object with regular attached angle in GSCAD.

Effect of Dietary Mugwort on the Physico-Chemical Properties of Chicken Meat (쑥의 급여가 계육의 이화학적 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the influence of dietary mugwort on physico-chemical characteristics and processing characteristics in meat sample of chicken meat. Broilers were randomly assigned to one of four dietary treatments: 1) Control(commercial feed) 2) T1(commercial feed supplemented with 1% mugwort) 3) T2(commercial feed with 3% mugwort) and 4)T3(commercial feed with 5% mugwort). They were fed one of the experimental diets for five weeks and slaughtered. After that, the meat samples were vacuum packaged and stored at 4${\pm}$1$^{\circ}C$. The physico-chemical characteristics and processing characteristics were analyzed for meat samples stored over a period of 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 weeks. The pH of all treatments significantly increased during the storage periods(U<0.05). The pH of the thigh was rather higher than that of the breast. The drip loss and heating loss tend to decrease in dietary mugwort group(p<0.05). The WHC(water holding capacity) of all treatment was significantly increased during storage(p<0.05). The meat color was increased during storage.

First Report on Isolation of Salmonella Enteritidis from Eggs at Grocery Stores in Korea

  • Salmonella Enteritidis is responsible for causing foodborne diseases upon consumption of egg products. While cases of S. Enteritidis isolation from eggs have been reported in other countries, no such cases have previously been reported in Korea. In this study, we report the first isolation and identification of S. Enteritidis from domestically distributed eggs in Korea. Eggs were collected from eight countrywide grocery stores during different seasons between 2011 and 2012. Egg contents and washing solution of egg shells were incubated in buffered peptone water, and the enriched broth was further enriched in tetrathionate broth and Rappaport-Vassiliadis. The secondary enriched broth was streaked on xylose lysine desoxycholate agar. The suspected colonies were confirmed to S. Enteritidis by a biochemical test, serotyping, and PCR test. Genetic relatedness among the isolates was analyzed using Diversilab Salmonella kit. Three strains of S. Enteritidis were isolated from egg contents and egg shells collected from grocery stores of the Eumseong-city in the fall of 2011. All three stains showed resistance to chloramphenicol, streptomycin, nalidixic acid, and ampicillin by the disk diffusion method. In addition, the isolates showed more than 99% DNA homology, indicating that they were presumably identical strains. Therefore, there is a requirement to monitor and control against S. Enteritidis from eggs in Korea.

Formulating Reduced-fat Sausages with Quinoa or Teff Flours: Effects on Emulsion Characteristics and Product Quality

  • This study dealt with the use of quinoa flour (QF) or teff flour (TF) as partial beef fat replacers in the formulation of emulsion-type sausages. A control (C) group was manufactured with 20% beef fat, while the other three groups were formulated with 10% beef fat plus 5% QF (Q), 5% TF (T), and 2.5% QF+2.5% TF (QT). Water-holding capacity of the emulsions was higher in Q (81.81%), T (82.20%), and QT (84.10%) samples than in C (64.83%) samples. Total expressible fluid and expressible fat were the lowest in Q and T samples, indicating the highest emulsion stability of those groups. Incorporation of QF and TF into formulations increased moisture and carbohydrate contents while decreased fat and energy values. Besides, the use of QF was effective to increase protein and dietary fiber contents. T sausages had lower luminosity (L) and higher yellowness (b) than C sausages, whilst Q sausages did not result in significant color changes. Higher cook yield values were recorded in Q (97.96%), T (98.21%), and QT (98.15%) samples compared with C (96.44%) samples. Inclusion of QF and TF to formulation led to lower hardness and gumminess, while utilization of TF was also effective to decrease chewiness. Consequently, healthier emulsified sausages were obtained by the inclusion of QF or TF that could decrease the fat content more than 50% without sacrificing overall quality, bringing advantages by quinoa over teff for increasing nutritional value and leading minimal modifications on color and texture.

Screening for the Antioxidants in Unused Marine Resources by the Polarographic Method (수산 미이용자원 중에 존재하는 항산화 물질의 검색)

  • To detect naturally occurring antioxidative components from unused marine resources, the screening test for the antioxidants containing in starfish, ascidian skin, cuttlefish ink, echinoid skin, Sargassum horneri, Agarum cribrosum, Odonthalia corymbifera and Desmarestia ligulata was carried out. The ether, acetone and methanol fractions successively extracted from Odonthalia corymbifera were very effective on prevention of the nonenzymatic lipid oxidation and their $IC_{50}$, (a concentration to inhibit 50% of control lipid oxidation rate) were $30,\;100\;and\;200{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. The water and methanol extracts obtained from cuttlefish ink also revealed strong antioxidant effect and their $IC_{50}$, were $390,\;100{\mu}g/ml$, respectively.
