  • The immediate purposes of this study is to establish the surface chemical principles associated with the flotation process of waste papers and to verify them by practical flotation experiments. To achieve this AKD sized hydrophobic microcrystallince cellulose (MCC) with different levels of hydrophobicity, and hydrophilic MCC dyed with black were prepared as model substances. The effects of surface characteristics on flotation efficiency were evaluated by measuing the brightness of the flotation rejects obtained after the flotation experiments carried out using MCC mixtures prepared with different ratios of hydrophobic and hydrophilic MCCs. Results showed that more than 90% of the flotation rejects consisted of hydrophobic MCC indicating the critical importance of the hydrophobicity of the materials in the flotation process. The proportions of hydrophobic materials in the reject remained constant when highly sized MCC was used as a model of hydrophobic substance.

  • This study was to determine the technical feasibility of using wastepaper fibers, obtained through dry processing of wastepaper, as reinforcement in thin cement produces. Dry-processed waste papers have high levels of noncellulosic impurities, and the recycling process also breads and damages the fibers. To produce wastepaper fiber-cement composites, first the influential variables in the slurry-dewatering method of processing the composites were identified in an experimental study based on factorial design. Among the proportioning and processing variables investigated, fiber mass fraction and level of substitution of virgin fibers with recycled ones were found to have statistically significant effects on mechanical and physical properties of composites. Subsequently, response surface analysis techniques were used to devise an experimental program that helped determine the optimum combinations of the selected influential variables based on mechanical and physical properties, and cost.

  • In pulp and papermaking process, enzymatic treatment of pulp fibres has been a topic of increasing interest in last decade. Lots of patents, papers and research reports were published on the application of enzymes in the fields of enzymatic bleaching, deinking, slime control, pitch control, waste water treatment and fibre modification. Cellulase and hemicellulase are the principal enzymes used for the modification of fibre property. This study was carried out for determinating the behaviors of enzyme to pulp fibres. A commercial enzyme, Denimax BT which is consisted with cellulase and hemicellulase, was treated to the kraft pulp produced from domestic hardwood mixtures. Results were mainly concentrated on the behaviors of freeness, drainability and fines content of fibres, and physical properties of paper with enzyme treatment. The freeness levels and dewatering ability were developed, and the fines contents were decreased. The creation of fines were controlled by the method of pre-enzyme treatment prior to fibre beating. The mechanical strength of paper, like tensile, burst, tear strength and folding endurance, were remarkably improved by the pre-enzyme treatment.

  • The need to further improve food quality and reduce food waste leads to increased attention for the development of Food Supply Chain Management (FSCM) which considers intrinsic characteristics of food supply chains besides traditional supply chain management (SCM) objectives such as cost and responsiveness. Growing consciousness of society towards sustainable development brings additional objectives to the food supply chains and the fast evolution of sustainable development results in the development of a new fast-growing concept: Sustainable Food Supply Chain Management (SFSCM). In response to these developments, researchers have developed various decision support tools that can be used for handling progressively increasing complexity along the alteration process from SCM to FSCM and now to SFSCM. This study reviewed literature on sustainable food logistics management to identify logistical key issues and relevant challenges. The evaluation of the reviewed papers shows that towards obtaining sustainability together with considering intrinsic characteristics of food supply chains, there is a gap between the needs of the practice and the current available method.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine how effective the existing sex education programs and letter to parents from school were for their know ledge and attitudes towards sex of the middle school students. Methods: Subjects were selected from first grade students in a middle school from May 30 through July 19, 2005. The subjects were divided into three groups of 70 students each, two experiment groups and one control group. The study was conducted by nonequivalent control group non-synchronized design. The information letter from school to parents was made into four editions on double-sided A4 size paper and was handed out to students during weekly meeting. Both the students and their parents were required to read it and the parents were told to sign the papers. The sex education program applied in this study was recomposed based on the programs which were previously made by Sun Hee Park(2004) and Eun Ja Jung(2000). Content provided in the sex education program is identical to the one's in the information letter to parents. Experimental group 1 was required to read the four information letters to parents for two weeks, together with their parents. Group 2 experienced the sex education program four times in two weeks of time. The above two experimental groups and the control group were assessed on their knowledge and attitude towards sex twice, before and after the experiment. Results: There were significant differences in sexual knowledge about sex between the three subject groups and such data supports the first hypothesis. There was significant difference in attitude towards sex between the three subject groups and such data support the second hypothesis. Conclusion: According to the experiment results, both the information letter to parents and programs about sex education were effective for the middle school students. Yet, teaching students with the program format was more successful than handout formats. However, using information letters to parents to educate students does not waste any school hours, so if school nurses can provide the students more papers, the educational effect will be greater.

  • The fiber wall filling(FWF) technology, which is based on Precipitatin of fillers in the micropores of the cell wall structure of never-dried chemical pulp fiber, has been developed to improve filling and loading process in papermaking. In presenting FWF technique here, micropores of pulp fiber are first impregnated with an ionic solution of water soluble salt and consecutively impregnated with the second salt solution. This procedure generates an insoluble precipitate within the micropores of cell wall by chemical interaction of these two ionic salt solutions This is the first attempts to use FWF technology for the quality of waste paper grade which is recycled in papermaking, even though this FWF technology has been impressively improved for never-dried chemical pulp in filling and loading process of papermaking. The precipitated amount of CaCO$_3$ and SrCO$_3$ reached 5-6% and 4-5% of the waste paper weight respectively, which was measured by ash content of the burned waste paper fiber. On the other way the precipitated amounts of those materials impregnated into never-dried chemical pulp fiber have reached 17-18% and 16-18% respectively. The micropore loading technique gives optical and physical properties to the handsheets formed with celt-wall-filled fibers which are better than those handsheet properties resulting from conventional loading. The papers made from the cell-wall-filled pulps are stronger than those with the customary location of filler between the fibers.
