  • Denim is one of the most frequently used fabrics for blue jeans. After washing denim fabric frequently changes its size and color. Salespersons recommended that after purchasing blue jeans customers should dry clean them once before washing. The aim of this study was to investigate to what degree washing with a household washing machine and dry cleaning affected the dimensions and the color of denim fabric. The denim fabric shrank greatly after the first laundering in warp direction regardless of whether it had been dry-cleaned or not. However, it shrank little from the second to the tenth laundering and after each number of dry cleanings. The thickness of the denim changed in the same way as the shrinkage occurred when the number of launderings or dry-cleanings increased. Although the indigo came out of the denim into washing liquor, both of the $L^*$ values and the $b^*$ values of the laundered and the dry-cleaned denim fabrics were lower than those of the control fabric. Darkening of the fabric after washing attributed to the shrinkage in warp; specifically the deep-blue warp yarns more spaced on the fabric face and the back. The $L^*$ and $b^*$ values of the dry-cleaned fabric decreased less than those of the laundered. The value of $a^*$ increased much less than the other values. Staining of the white cotton fabric laundered with the denim fabrics became less as the number of launderings increased. The degree of staining from the dry-cleaned denim was much lower than that of the laundered fabric.

  • Concentrated flux interior permanent magnet (CFIPM) motors have the advantage that their utilization of flux linkage is more efficient than that of general IPM motors and CFIPM motors are suitable for washing machine motors, which demand low-speed, high-torque specifications. However, low efficiency occurs in the low-speed high-torque mode considering the high-speed operation for spin mode. This paper proposes a magnet overhang structure between the rotor core that reduces leakage flux and improves efficiency for a CFIPM in wash mode. Optimization of the 3D design of magnet overhang structures is performed to improve the efficiency with the same quantity of permanent magnets. The validity of the optimal design is experimentally verified through the fabrication of prototypes.

  • Korean living culture raised the users' needs for sub-kitchen. In the traditional Korean house, there was large space related to kitchen area for preparing food and stock big and bulky housing stuffs. As apartment housing became dominant as Korean dwelling, sub-kitchen has been planed in the balcony that is not included in the sales area. In this study, the case of the apartment housing in Esiapolis, Daegu was analyzed. To plan the user-oriented sub-kitchen, the consumer research was carried out. Consumers needed a pantry, more storage near the kitchen, and wanted to place washing machine and washing stand in a sub-kitchen. Sub-kitchens were planed to meet those consumers' needs. Through this case study and former studies analysis, sub-kitchen's function unit was derived: wash, storage, auxiliary work. By combining each function unit, sub-kitchen was classified into 3 types, wash & auxiliary work, wash & storage, and wash & storage & auxiliary work. For each sub-kitchen type, components of function units, available layouts, and minimum size were recommended.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the housework space viewed from housewives and husband in dual-earner families. For this study, depth-interview method were used to collects the data. The depth-interview were conducted on the eight heusewives and two husbands in dual-earner families in Jinju and Gwangju in April 2005. The narratives were then analyzed to discover the demands of the kitchen and laundry room. The major results were as follows: 1) Dual-earner families want the kitchen design is they can share housework with their spouses, such as kitchen facing the front side of the floor plan and island counter. In addition, they want spacious, adjustable(flexible), visible storage to enable the housewives to work with their spouse efficiently. Space for Kimchi refrigerator should be considered in the kitchen. 2) They want the noise-free laundry because the interviewers did their laundry work in the night time. Also, they want a multi-purpose laundry mm where machine washing, hand washing, drying and ironing can be done. In addition, for hand-washing wives and husbands, specific space and facilities where they can hand washing on stand posture were needed.

  • This paper propose Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry(ESPI) for reliability evaluation of electronic device. Especially, vibration problem in a fan of air conditioner, motor of washing machine and etc. is important factor to design the devices. However, it is difficult to apply previous method, accelerometer to the devices with lightweight and complex geometry. ESPI, non-contact measurement technique is applied for vibration analysis of a sirocco fan inside air conditioner. Vibration mode shapes, natural frequency and the range of the frequency are decided and compared with that of FEM analysis. In mechanical deign of new product, ESPI is able to supply effective design information.

  • This paper describes the design and implementation of PLC home network system using HNCP ver.1.0. The developed home network system comprises a home server progranL a home master, and appliance emulators (e.g., for washing machine, microwave oven, and air-conditioner). Throughout the implementation of PLC home network system, the feasibility of HNCP ver.1.0 is verified.

  • The research examines the characteristics of the sewing methods used for women's Jeogori in modern Korea. The results are following. In the 1920s sewing of shoulder parts was started, and in the 1930s sewing by hand had reduced by dissemination of sewing-machine, and in the 1940s the Som-jeogori declined by the matter of economic and sanitary issues. In the 1950s four-fold sewing emerged, and during the 1960s the gause-lined triple-layered Jeogori was in fashion, and in the 1970s the Ggaeggi-jeogori and much elaborated Jeogori became in vogue. The characteristics of the sewing methods are changed by following factors. First, the dissemination of sewing-machine in the 1930's enabled fast and precise sewing of Jeogori which reduced the rate of clothes mending and the production period. Second, by development of washing method, the dry cleaning became common, resulting cleaner washing and better preservation. Third, introduction of western clothes gave rise to modernized Han-bok which was changed into practical and simple one. Fourth, by the introduction of synthetic textile and industry development, Jeogori with no armhole line or right Seop line was made using wide selection of textiles. Fifth, in 1945~60s, women learned' good wife and wise mother' education and the use of sewing machine in school. The clothing lifestyle affected the sewing method's change, for example, clothes sewed strongly by sewing machine not to take clothes apart, and attaching button instead of Go-reum to save clothes.
