  • Purpose: This study was done to investigate nurses' knowledge of, and compliance with the multidrug-resistant organism (MDRO) infection control guidelines. Methods: A survey questionnaire was developed based on the institutional and national guidelines and was administered to a convenience sample of 306 nurses in a university hospital. Results: The mean score for knowledge was 33.87 (percentage of correct answers: 82.61%). The percentages of correct answers for basic concepts, route of transmission, hand washing/protective devices and environment management were 74.27%, 94.29%, 92.90% and 75.54% respectively. The mean compliance score was 4.15 (range: 1-5). The compliance scores for education, communication, contact precaution, disinfection, surveillance culture, and hand washing were 3.29, 4.05, 4.20, 4.50, 4.40 and 4.48 respectively. Nurses indicated "lack of time (30.06%)", "lack of means (10.78%)" and "lack of knowledge (9.48%)" as reasons for noncompliance. Conclusion: While most educational programs have focused on hand washing or use of protective devices to prevent transmission of MDRO in acute care settings, hospital nurses' knowledge of the basic concepts of MDRO and environmental management has remained insufficient. Nurses are relatively non-compliant to the guidelines in the areas of education (staff, patient, family) and communication. Comprehensive educational programs are needed to decrease hospital infection rates and to improve the health of patients.

  • Purpose: This study investigated the microorganisms in the hand before and after hand washing, using plain and antibacterial soap. The purpose of this study was to provide details, for educational purposes, of hand washing methods that should be used by college students for their hand hygiene. Methods: This study was arranged using a randomized control group pretest-posttest design. Data obtained through questionnaires were collected from college students in Gangwon Province. This study involved three groups under different conditions. The first and the second group washed their hands with plain and antibacterial soap, respectively. The third group members were educated about hand washing and they then washed their hands with plain soap. In addition, we collected samples to investigate the removal rate of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, which can cause bacterial disease, by using sterile swabs from the hands in group 3. Results: The removal rates of bacteria in the first and the second group after hand washing with plain and antimicrobial soap were 62.7% and 76%, respectively. The third group, who were educated concerning proper hand washing, showed a figure of 72.8%. Conclusion: Repeated and more consistent education of college students concerning proper hand washing would be important in order to improve their knowledge, attitude, and performance with regard to hand washing.

  • Objectives : This study was conducted to evaluate the public's awareness of the importance of hand washing and to compare perceptions on the habit of hand washing with actual hand washing behavior. Methods : Data were collected by observing 2,800 participants washing their hands after using public restrooms in seven cities nationwide and by surveying 1,000 respondents (age > 14 years) through telephone interviews using a structured questionnaire. Results : Although 94% of the survey respondents claimed to mostly or always wash their hands after using public restrooms, only 63.4% of the observed participants did wash their hands after using public restrooms. Significant factors related to increased adherence to hand washing were female gender, approximate ages of 20 to 39 years by their appearance, and the presence of other people from the observation. About 79% of the survey respondents always washed their hands after using bathrooms at home, 73% washed their hands before handling food, and 67% washed their hands upon returning to their home. However, 93.2% and 86.3% of the survey respondents did not wash their hands after coughing or sneezing and after handling money, respectively. Although most of the survey respondents (77.6%) were aware that hand washing is helpful in preventing communicable diseases, 39.6% of the survey respondents did not do so because they were 'not accustomed' to washing their hands and 30.2% thought that washing their hands is 'annoying'. Conclusions : This is the first comprehensive report on hand washing behavior and awareness of the general population in Korea. The result of this study in terms of individual behavior and awareness of hand washing are comparable with similar studies conducted in other countries. However adherence to hand washing is still low and needs to be increased. The results of this study can be used as a baseline in setting up strategies and activities to promote adherence to hand washing.

  • As a result of the sudden change of our society and the increasing employment of married women, it is necessary for men to participate in household works. The purpose of this study was to investigate consciousness of and participation in meal management of 30 to 50 years old Korean married men, living in Incheon and Ganghwa. The younger and the lower the education, consciousness about the meal management was lower. More than half of the subjects responded ‘Men can do participate in preparation of meals if necessary’ and the lowest of the subjects responded ‘Men should not participate in preparation of meals’. It showed that the consciousness of participation in meal management was changing positively. Although the consciousness of participation in meal management was positive, the real rate of meal management participation was not that high. Men were participated in grocery shopping, dish washing, cooking and menu planning in order. The average score of nutrition knowledge was high but there was no significant correlation between the nutrition knowledge and the participation in meal management. There were no correlations between the consciousness of and the participation in meal management. But there were strong correlations among each other in meal management behaviors such as grocery shopping, dish washing, cooking and menu planning. Our results suggested that nutritional education should be carried out in menu planning and cooking demanding knowledge and training.

  • Purpose: This study was designed to investigate nursing students' exposure experience to infectious diseases and their knowledge and performance for the nosocomial infection control. Method: The data was obtained from 292 nursing students having clinical experience at two university hospitals in Seoul from November 2005 to February 2006. Specific questionnaire was constructed and used for this study. The obtained data was analyzed by using the SPSS window program. Result: The results were as follow : 1. Among the evaluation scores of knowledge for the nosocomial infection control, the score of sterilization and the score of the intravenous therapy management were low(.14). 2. Among the evaluation scores of performance for the nosocomial infection control, the score of hand washing is low(1.63). 3. 86.3 percent of the nursing students had exposure experience to infectious disease. Many of them did not use the protective equipments in clinical experience nor took any treatment after the exposure to infectious diseases. Conclusion: Based on these results, we suggest that the programs for the nosocomial infection control should be developed for nursing students. It is also suggested that nursing students should be educated before their clinical experience to keep protected from the infection. In particular, the hand washing, sterilization and intravenous therapy management should be emphasized in the educational programs.

  • The hand hygiene behavior of 400 middle school students (grades 1-3) in Seoul and Gyeonggi-Do was studied to determine how stages of change were affected by food safety education, focusing on hand hygiene and general food safety. Subjects were 51.3% male and 44.3% of study subjects were first graders of middle school. Approximately 40% of subjects were at the stage of action, 42.7% were at the stage of contemplation, and 16.4% were at pre-contemplation. The most important factor that influenced proper hand washing was self efficacy ($P$ < 0.001). Proper hand washing was also correlated significantly with positive belief ($P$ < 0.01) and stages of change ($P$ < 0.01). After food safety education by high-school mentors, middle-school students who were in the stages of pre-contemplation (11.1%) and contemplation (88.9%) showed significant progression toward the action stage ($P$ < 0.001). Proper hand washing ($P$ < 0.01) and food safety knowledge ($P$ < 0.05) were also significantly increased after educational intervention.
