Turbulent coherent structure near rod-roughened wall are investigated by analyzing the database of direct numerical simulation of turbulent boundary layer. The roughness sublayer id defined as two-point correlations are not independent of streamwise locations around roughness. The roughness sublayer based on the two-point spatial correlation is different from that given by one-point statistics. Quadrant analysis and probability-weighted Reynolds shear stress indicate that turbulent structures are not affected by surface roughness above the roughness sublayer defined by the spatial correlations. The conditionally-averaged flow fields associated with Reynolds shear stress producing Q2/Q4 events show that though turbulent vortices are affected in the roughness sublayer, these are very similar at different streamwise locations above the roughness sublayer. The Reynolds stress producing turbulent vortices in the log layer have almost the same geometrical shape as those in the smooth wall-bounded turbulent flows. This suggests that the mechanism by which the Reynolds stress is produced in the log layer has not been significantly affected by the present surface roughness.
The filmwise condensation heat transfer coefficients of R-134a on the horizontal copper and stainless steel tubes were measured and analyzed. The outside diameter of the tubes was 15.88 mm, and the tube thickness ranged from 0.89 to 1.65 mm. The polished stainless steel tube had an RMS surface roughness($R_q$) of 0.37 $\mu$m, and commercial stainless steel tubes had an surface roughness($R_q$) of 1.855 $\mu$m. The tests were conducted at the saturation temperatures of 20 and $30^{\circ}C$, and the liquid wall subcoolings from 0.4 to $2.1^{\circ}C$. The measured condensation heat transfer coefficients were significantly lower than the predicted data by the Nusselt analysis. This trend in the stainless steel tube was explained by the effects of thermal resistance of tube material and surface roughness. Based on the experimental data with respect to wall thickness and surface roughness, it was suggested that the existing correlation on external condensation should be modified by considering material and surface roughness factors. The revised correlation was developed by introducing the effects of wall thickness and surface roughness into the Nusselt equation. The average deviation of the revised correlation was 13.0 %.
The domain wall motion coercivity, $H_{c}$, of magnetic materials arises from the dependence of the wall energy on localized changes in material parameters (magnetization, anisotropy, exchange energy densities). However, in an otherwise perfectly homogeneous material, the domain wall energy might change due to the change in the volume of the wall versus the wall position. Thus, any surface roughness contributes to the coercivity. Assuming different two-dimensional surface profiles, characterized by average wavelengths ${\lambda}_{x}$ and ${\lambda}_{y}$, and relative thickness variations dh/h, the coercivity due to the surface roughness has been calculated. Compared to the one dimensional case, the 2D coercivity is reduced. Depending on the ratio of ${\lambda}$ to the domain wall width, $H_{c}$ has a maximum around 2, and increasing with dh/h. With the decreasing thickness of the thin film and GMR heads, it might be the domain factor in determining the coercivity.
Direct numerical simulation of a fully developed turbulent plane Couette-Poiseuille flow with a two-dimensional (2-D) rod-roughened wall is performed to investigate the impacts of the surface roughness. It is shown that the logarithmic region in the mean velocity profile over the rough wall Couette-Poiseuille flow is significantly shortened by the surface roughness compared to that over a turbulent Couette-Poiseuille flow with smooth wall. The Reynolds shear stress over the rough wall Couette-Poiseuille flow is decreased compared to that for a smooth case in the outer layer. These results are attributed to weakened turbulence activity or roll-cell mode over the rough wall Couette-Poiseuille flow near the channel centerline due to suppressed development of u'-structure on the top wall, as documented through spanwise energy spectra of the streamwise velocity fluctuations. Inspection of congregation motion near the bottom wall and time evolution of u'-structure reveal weakened co-supporting cycle for the rough wall case.
A physical and numerical steady flow impinging jet has been used to simulate the bulk characteristics of a downburst-like wind field. The influence of downdraft tilt and surface roughness on the ensuing wall jet flow has been investigated. It was found that a simulated downdraft impinging the surface at a non-normal angle has the potential for causing larger structural loads than the normal impingement case. It was also found that for the current impinging jet simulations, surface roughness played a minor role in determining the storm maximum wind structure, but this influence increased as the wall jet diverged. However, through comparison with previous research it was found that the influence of surface roughness is Reynolds number dependent and therefore may differ from that reported herein for full-scale downburst cases. Using the current experimental results an empirical model has been developed for laboratory-scale impinging jet velocity structure that includes the influence of both jet tilt and surface roughness.
In this study, in order to investigate the effects of wall roughness on the hydraulic characteristics of chlorine contactor, CFD simulation and tracer tests were conducted for both of reactors whose walls are made of concrete and lined with PE(Poly Ethylene). In the case of walls contacted with water being lined with PE (relatively lower roughness), the flow within reactor is closer to plug flow than that in the case of concrete walls (relatively higher roughness). Especially, the longer tail of C-curve from the results of transient CFD simulation can tell that Morill index in the case concrete walls is much higher than that in the case of walls be lined with lower roughness material.
To find the working condition is one of the important factors in precision machining. In this study, we analyzed maximum working temperature by infra-red camera and surface roughness in side wall end milling using design of experiment (DOE): RSM(response surface methodology), ANOM(analysis of means) and ANOVA(analysis of variance) by table of orthogonal array. ANOM and ANOVA are well adapted to select sensitivity of design variables for maximum working temperature and surface roughness. The effective design variables and their levels should be determined using ANOM, ANOVA. RSM is presented 2nd order approximation polynomial of maximum working temperature and surface roughness is composed with design variables. Therefore, it is expected that the proposed procedure using design of experiment : table of orthogonal array, ANOM, ANOVA and RSM can be easily utilized to solve the problem of working condition.
