Reinforced concrete(RC) structural walls are major lateral load-resisting structural member in building structures. Generally these RC structural walls are coupled with each other by the coupling beams and slabs, and therefore they behave as RC coupled structural wall system. In the design of these coupled structural wall systems, member forces are calculated using elastic structural analysis. These elastic analysis methodologies for the design of coupled structural wall system was not reasonable because it can not consider their ultimate behavior and assure economic feasibility. Performance based design and moment redistribution method to solve these problems is regarded as a reasonable alternative design method for RC coupled structural wall system. However, it is not verified under various design parameters. In this study, nonlinear analysis of RC coupled structural wall system was performed according to various design parameters such as reinforcement ratio, ultimate concrete strain and wall height. Based on analysis results, design considerations for coupled RC structural wall system was proposed.
In order to investigate the fire-induced smoke movement in a three-dimensional room with an open door, numerical and experimental study was performed. The center, wall, and corner fire plumes for various sized fires were studied experimentally in a rectangular pool fire using methanol as a fuel. The numerical results from a self-developed SMEP (Smoke Movement Estimating Program) field model were compared with experimental results obtained in this and from literature. Comparisons of SMEP and experimental results have shown reasonable agreement. As the fire strength became larger for the center fires, the air mass flow rate in the door, average hot layer temperature, flame angle and mean flame height were observed to increase but the doorway-neutral-planeheight and the steady-state time were observed to decrease. Also as the wall effect became larger in room fires, the hot layer temperature, mean flame height, doorway-neutral-planeheight and steady-state time were observed to increase. In the egress point of view considering the smoke filling time and the early spread of plume in the room space, the results of the center fire appeared to be more dangerous as compared with the wall and the corner fire. Thus it is necessary to consider the wall effect as an important factor in designing efficient fire protection systems.
In solid-liquid two phase flow, the knowledge of how descending solid particles affected by the presence of downstream wall is important. This work studies at what interstitial distance the velocity of a vertically descending sphere is affected by a downstream wall as a consequence of wall-modified hydrodynamic forces through a validated dynamic model. This interstitial distance-the hydrodynamic coupling distance ${\delta}_c-is$ found to decay monotonically with the approach Stokes number St which compares the particle inertia to viscous drag characterized by the quasi-steady Stokes' drag. The scaling relation ${\delta}_c-St-1$ decays monotonically as literature below the value of St equal to 10. However, the faster diminishing rate is found above the threshold value from St=10-40. Furthermore, an empirical relation of ${\delta}_c-St$ shows dependence on the drop height which clearly indicates the non-negligible effect of unsteady hydrodynamic force components, namely the added mass force and the history force. Finally, we attempt a fitting relation which embedded the particle acceleration effect in the dependence of fitting constants on the diameter-scaled drop height.

In this paper, optimum design is considered over the retaining wall with seismic constraints. The sequential linear programming method(SLP) is used as a rational approach to this optimum design. To make a comparison between the seismic design and the normal design, retaining wall with 4~7m height were adopted. It is shown that the seismic design is more expensive (over 30%) than the normal design for the construction cost.

The application of the reinforced retaining wall has increased in the last 10 years in Korea. The height of reinforced wall is generally limited to less than 15m. It has been reported that the reinforced wall higher than 10m should have higher strength reinforcement or should reduce the lateral earth pressure of the reinforced wall to secure the stability of the wall. In this study, the reinforced retaining wall was constructed 14m high, backfilled by a mixture of soil and cement and instrumented on the reinforcement elements. The instrumented reinforced wall was monitored during and after construction. Field monitoring result shows that a backfill by a mixture of soil and cement reduced the tensile stress developed on the reinforcing elements and the reinforced wall backfilled by a mixture of soil and cement performed successful.

The model was developed by applying the principles of Bacot and Vidal to measure the behavior of deformation of the reinforced earth wall, and various tasts were performed by using the plastic fabric filter and the galvanized steel plate as a strip. The results obtained are as follows; 1. When the reinforced earth wall is deformed by the load, the strip is completely reinforced by the backfill materials and changed to the rigid block state, under the state of failure which permits sliding only, the next theoretical equation is formed. (H/L) . tan$\theta$ [cosO-sinOtanO] =2sinO[tan($\theta$ +0) +tanO] 2.The degree of the mutual reinforcement of the backfill material and the strip depend on the physical characteristics of the each material especially the angle of shearing resistance of the backfill material is desirable over 20$^{\circ}$ and, if it is over 400, its function could be a maximum. 3.The distribution of the maximum tensile strain of the reinforcement is changing with the height of reinforced earth wall, and when the height from bottom of the reinforced earth wall is 1.85 to 3. 35m, the maximum tensile strain appears at 2m from the skin element. The maximum tensile strain is increased by the depth of the reinforced earth wall from surface, and increased with the lapse of time after construction. 4.The failure surface of the reinforced earth wall by the concrete skin was about 60$^{\circ}$and the failure behavior of the reinforced earth wall in which the fabric filter was buried was slow, and so the pore pressure could be decreased. 5.It is possible to construct the fabric retained earth wall by the plastic fabric filter only. And the reinforcing effect between the steel plate and the plastic fabric filter is not largely different. however, in the aspect of the economic durability, the plastic fabric filter is more advantageous. 6.The reinforcing action mainly depends on the width and the length of the reinforcing materials, if possible, the full width is advantageous to enlarge the contact area with backfill. but considering the economic aspect, it is neccessary to develop the method controlling the space of the strip.
Geogrid reinforced soil structures with segmental block facing have been increased since 1990's, because of the convenience of installation and the flexible appearance. In this paper, the behavior of the segmental reinforced retaining wall was analysed with the results of field monitoring. The height and length of reinforced wall are 12m and 25m, respectively. The field measurement equipments are horizontal and vertical earth pressure cells, settlement plate, strain gauge, inclinometer, and displacement pin. Based on the field monitoring, the horizontal earth pressure was approximately 0.3times higher than that of the theoretical method and the maximum tensile strength of reinforcement was 26.2kN/m. The displacement of facing wall was 23mm at the point of 7.1m height of the wall and toward the wall facing. The results of the study indicate that the segmental reinforced retaining wall is in a stable condition because of good compaction & reinforcement effects, and long period of construction time. Finally, the computer program of SRWall is very useful tool to design the segmental reinforced retaining wall.
In a tall reinforced concrete (RC) core wall system subjected to strong ground motions, inelastic behavior near the base as well as mid-height of the wall is possible. Generally, the formation of plastic hinge in a core wall system may lead to extensive damage and significant repairing cost. A new configuration of core structures consisting of buckling restrained braced frames (BRBFs) and RC walls is an interesting idea in tall building seismic design. This concept can be used in the plan configuration of tall core wall systems. In this study, tall buildings with different configurations of combined core systems were designed and analyzed. Nonlinear time history analysis at severe earthquake level was performed and the results were compared for different configurations. The results demonstrate that using enough BRBFs can reduce the large curvature ductility demand at the base and mid-height of RC core wall systems and also can reduce the maximum inter-story drift ratio. For a better investigation of the structural behavior, the probabilistic approach can lead to in-depth insight. Therefore, incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) curves were calculated to assess the performance. Fragility curves at different limit states were then extracted and compared. Mean IDA curves demonstrate better behavior for a combined system, compared with conventional RC core wall systems. Collapse margin ratio for a RC core wall only system and RC core with enough BRBFs were almost 1.05 and 1.92 respectively. Therefore, it appears that using one RC core wall combined with enough BRBF core is an effective idea to achieve more confidence against tall building collapse and the results demonstrated the potential of the proposed system.

An investigation of ribbed divergent channel was undertaken to determine the effect of rib pitch to height ratio on total friction factor and heat transfer results in the fully developed regime. The ribbed divergent rectangular channel with the channel exit hydraulic diameter ($D_{ho}$) to inlet channel hydraulic diameter ($D_{hi}$) ratio of 1.16 with wall inclination angle of 0.72 deg, at which the ratios (p/e) of 6,10, and 14 are considered. The ribbed straight channel of $D_{ho}/D_{hi}=1.0$ were also used. The ribbed divergent wall is manufactured with a fixed rib height (e) of 10 mm and the ratio of rib spacing (p) to height 6, 10, and 14. The measurement was run with range of Reynolds numbers from 24,000 to 84,000. The comparison shows that the ratio of p/e=6 has the greatest thermal performance in the divergent channel under two constraints; identical mass flow rate and identical pressure drop.
This paper was concerned with pool fire about many used kerosene and diesel oil. In order to know the thermal effects of kerosene and diesel oil, temperature change in the pool fire of these fuels were obtained as a variation of combustion time and the tank's height and diameter by using the data acquisition system, And fuel combustion velocity were derived as a function of the diameter and wall thickness of tanks and combustion time. As a result, when the tank's height was 15㎝, the greater diameter the higher temperature rising regardless of tank's wall thickness and fuels. But, when the tank's height is 30㎝, temperature rising was not higher than 15㎝. Also, temperature rising in the pool fire of kerosene much higher than diesel oil. Kerosene's combustion velocity was about two times faster than diesel oil. And, kerosene's combustion velocity was increased according to the increasing of tank's diameter and combustion time. But, diesel oil's combustion velocity was a little increased or not. Surrounding temperature change of tank with the pool fire was obtained temperature distribution of 0∼35℃ according to the change of tank's diameter and distance from the tank's wall.
