  • Ramjet mode combustion test was performed for a dual-mode ramjet engine model. The engine model consists of an air intake, a combustor and a nozzle. The combustor in the model has a large backward-facing step, designed to be used as a part of a rocket-based combined cycle engine. The test was performed at the flight speed of Mach 5 and the altitude of 24 km. Strong combustion was established only when the fuel was injected from both of the bottom-side and cowl-side wall. When the total fuel stoichiometric ratio was 1.0, distributed as 0.5 on the cowl side and 0.5 on the bottom side, the flow became subsonic at some portion in the combustor by thermal choking, i.e., ramjet mode was established for this condition.

  • This study presents an analytical method of estimating the developed horizontal active thrusts against GRS-RW( Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil Retaining Wall) system adapted to the case of distanced surcharge. In addition, the design charts that could be used for preliminary design of GRS-RW system are presented. The proposed method of analysis uses two body translation mechanism as well as force polygon concept. taking into account the effect of facing's rigidity. Besides. the effect of tension cracks in c-\Phi$ soils, seismic effects and horizontal distance from the back face of wall to uniformly distributed surcharge loadings are also included. The results of horizontal active thrusts obtained from the developed method of analysis are compared with those from Jarquio's modified Boussinesq equation.

  • Despite the frequent use of the soil-reinforced segmental retaining wall (SRW) system, the roles of the different components comprising the system, such as facing blocks, reinforcements, backfill, and block/backfill interface, are still not fully understood, and much still need to be investigated for more safe and economical design/analysis method. Therefore, this study was undertaken with the aim of understanding the effect of the shear strength of backfill material and the reinforcement stiffness on the behavior of SRW by using the finite element analysis. In the analysis the details of construction sequence and the SRW components were carefully modeled, and a parametric study was performed in order to investigate the effects of shear strength of backfill soil and reinforcement stiffness on the wall displacement and earth pressure, the vertical stress under the reinforced block, the reinforcement and block/reinforcement connection forces. Implications of the findings from this study to current design practices were discussed in detail.

  • A forward-facing aerospike attached to a payload fairing of a satellite launch vehicle significantly alters its flowfield and decreases the aerodynamic drag in transonic and low supersonic speeds. The present payload fairing is an axisymmetric configuration and consists of a blunt-nosed body along with a conical section, payload shroud, boat tail and followed by a booster. The main purpose of the present numerical simulations is to evaluate flowfield and assess the performance of aerodynamic drag coefficient with and without aerospike attached to a payload fairing of a typical satellite launch vehicle in freestream Mach number range 0.8 ≤ M ≤ 3.0 and freestream Reynolds number range 33.35 × 106/m ≤ Re ≤ 46.75 × 106/m whichincludes the maximum aerodynamic drag and maximum dynamic conditions during ascent flight trajectory of the satellite launch vehicle. A numerical simulation has been carried out to solve time-dependent compressible turbulent axisymmetric Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The closure of the system of equations is achieved using the Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model. The aerodynamic drag reduction mechanism is analysed employing numerical results such as velocity vector plots, density and Mach contours in conjunction with the experimental flow visualization pictures. The variations of wall pressure coefficient over the payload fairing with and without aerospike are exhibiting different kind of flowfield characteristics in the transonic and low supersonic speeds. The numerically computed results are compared with schlieren pictures, oil flow patterns and measured wall pressure distributions and exhibit good agreement between them.

  • This paper describes the results of pullout tests in the laboratory, which are conducted to assess the pullout performance of recently developed geosynthetic strip reinforcement with rounded band anchor. The geosynthetic strip can be used as reinforcements in reinforced soil wall with concrete block facing. The pullout resistance of the geosynthetic strip with rounded band anchor is mobilized by the combination of the interface friction between soil-reinforcement surface and the passive soil resistance caused by the rounded band anchor. Therefore, both the friction resistance and the passive resistance have to be considered in design. From the pullout test results, when the rounded band anchor are formed in the end part of the geosynthetic strip, pullout strength increases about from 10% to 65%. The passive resistance can be evaluated based on the pullout test results.

  • This paper presents the results of a three-dimensional finite element analysis on a geosynthetic-reinforced bridge abutment. Examples on the use of mechanically stabilized earth bridge abutment in north America are first presented. A three-dimensional finite element analysis on a 4.8 m high, 14 m wide geosynthetic-reinforced bridge abutment was performed to investigate the 3D behavior of the geosynthetic-reinforced bridge abutment and the load carrying capacity of the bridge abutment in the three-dimensional space. The results are then presented in a way that the three-dimensional behavior of the abutment can be identified in terms of wall displacements and reinforcement forces. It is shown that the wall facing displacements as well as the reinforcement forces in the abutment are smaller than those computed based on a plane strain approximation.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in surface dose due to increased scattering of gamma rays from patients injected with 99mTc and 18F, which are radioactive isotopes, in close contact with materials with high atomic number such as the walls of the stable room. Prepare 99mTc and 18F by injecting 20 and 10 mCi respectively into the NEMA phantom, and then measuring the surface dose for 60 minutes by positioning the phantom at a height of 1 m above the surface, at a distance of 0, 5 and 10 cm from the wall, and at the same location as the phantom facing the wall. Each experiment was repeated five times for reproducibility of the experiment and one way analysis of variability (ANOVA) was performed for significance testing and Tukey was used as a post-test. The study found that surface doses of 220.268, 287.121, 243.957, and 226.272 mGy were measured at 99mTc, respectively, in the case of empty space and in the case of 0, 5 and 10 cm, while those of 18F were measured at 637.111, 724.469, 657.107, and 640.365 mGy, respectively. In order to reduce changes in surface dose depending on the patient's location while waiting, it is necessary to keep the distance from the ground or the wall where the patient is closely adhered to, or install an air mattress, etc., to prevent the scattered lines as much as possible, considering the scattered lines due to the wall etc. in future setup of the patient waiting room and safety room, and in addition to the examination, the external skin width may be reduced.

  • Recently, cosmetic shops are facing a complicate economy situation and a great number of brands are attempting two-way communication with customers, not one-way communication. 'Brand' equity is important to deliver virtual brand mark as visual image. We have 4 steps for brand identity structure, and this study is about the first 'brand-awareness' and the second step 'brand-image'. We investigated the correlation between brand-awareness and brand-image after searching which spatial elements are highly effective to both steps as we designated 5 cosmetic shops. We already organized the means of spatial analysis and we separated into two elements, constructive and decorative. For constructive element, a shop needs a distinct ceiling and wall design, and for decorative element, strong brand image communication is required through showcase design. We proved that brand awareness and brand image have the correlation, which also can be in direct proportion, by regression analysis. The result of this study shows that improving brand awareness as the primary element for cosmetic road shop can be an effective way to enhance brand image.

  • A numerical study was made of heat transfer in locally-forced turbulent separated and reattaching flow over a backward-facing step. The local forcing was given to the flow by means of sinusoidally oscillating jet from a separation line. A Rhee and Sung version of the unsteady $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$-f(sub)u model and the diffusivity tensor heat transfer model were employed. The Reynolds number was fixed at Re(sub)H=33,000 and the forcing frequency was varied in the range 0$\leq$fH/U(sub)$\infty$$\leq$2. The condition of constant heat flux was imposed at the bottom wall. The predicted results were compared and validated with the experimental data of Chun and Sung and Vogel and Eaton. The enhancement of heat transfer in turbulent separated and reattaching flow by local forcing was evaluated and analyzed.
