The membrane emulsification (ME) is a technology for producing emulsions with narrow size distribution by using the well-defined porous membranes such as the SPG membrane. In this study, the preparation of polycaprolactone (PCL) microcapsules by using the multiple emulsions obtained from membrane emulsification method is studied. After the making of $W_1/O$ single emulsions by sonication method, then $W_1/O/W_2$ multiple emulsions are formed by premix-ME method. The PCL microcapsules impregnated with BSA model drug are prepared by solvent evaporating from $W_1/O/W_2$ multiple emulsions. The effects of various parameters such as the ratio of disperse/continuous phase (D/C ratio), the concentration of PCL, emulsifier and model drug and the transmembrane pressure on the size and distribution of PCL microcapsules are investigated. The uniform PCL microcapsules with about $5{\sim}6{\mu}m$ of mean size and 26% of BSA loading are obtained by the premix membrane emulsification.

The o/w emulsions were prepared by lysolecithin as a biosurfactantsto to emulsify oils with squalane(SQ), liquid paraffin(LP), octylpalmitate(OP), octylstearate(OS), alkyl benzoate(AB), isostearyl benzoate(ISB). The droplets size and shape of o/w emulsions were investigated by laser light scattering, With dynamic light scattering hydrodynamic radius(Rh) of emulsion droplets was varied from 150m to 250m and critical concentration of oil In which the hydrodynamic radius(Rh) of emulsion droplets decreased and increased was found in the point of 0.5wt% oil concentration, and it was found increasing the polarity of oil deccreased the droplets, the droplets size of SQ(polar oil) were lower than SQ(nonpolar oil) With static light scattering radius of gyration(R$_{g}$) of emulusion droplets was to be calculated. From measurements of the ratio of R$_{g}$R$_{h}$ it was found that the shape of droplet of ISB, AB(polar oils) were sphere, for OP, OS(apolar oil) were oblate, for LP, SQ(nonpolar oil) were rod. The viscosity of emulsion in the form of rod was higher than that of emulsion in the form of sphere.e.e.
$Al_2O_3$-20w/o $ZrO_2$ composite powders were prepared by the emulsion-coprecipitation method and the effects of preparative conditions on powder characteristics were investigated. In the preparation of $Al_2O_3$-$ZrO_2$ composite powders, toluene was used instead of kerosene as the oil phase in emulsions. After coprecipitation, the emulsion was easily broken into a single liquid phase by adding methanol, and then precipitates could be effectively collected by filteration. The fact that all $ZrO_2$ phases present at room temperature in composite powders calcined at $1100^{\circ}C$ after washed by methanol had a tetragonal structure confirmed that methanol-washing enhanced the dispersibility of fine $ZrO_2$ particles in $Al_2O_3$ matrix. $Al_2O_3$-$ZrO_2$ composite powders were spherical particles of 0.2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ diameter. Pellets sintered at $1650^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs showed the relative theoretical density of 97.3% and the fracture toughness of 5.01MN/$m^{3/2}$.
Poly(L-lactide) microcapsules containing hydrophilic penetrate were prepared by interfacial precipitation method through solvent evaporation from w/o/w emulsion. Effect of four determinative process parameters on the particle size distributions, morphologies, and release properties of microcapsules coated with poly(L-lactide) was investigated. Moreover, susceptible functional cotton fabrics treated with the mentioned microcapsules were prepared and laundry test up to 15 times were done to determine fastness properties. As a result, the prepared poly(L-lactide) microcapsules with a more sharp-distributive, rounder, and more permeable membranes could be prepared by means of protective colloid concentration, solution volume and stirring rate.
Microcapsules consisting of natural, biodegradable polymers for controlled and/or sustained core release applications are needed. Physicochemical properties of whey proteins suggest that they may be suitable wall materials in developing such microcapsules. The objectives of the research were to develop water-insoluble, whey protein-based microcapsules containing a model water-soluble drug using a chemical cross-linking agent, glutaraldehyde, and to investigate core release from these capsules at simulated physiological conditions. A model water soluble drug, theophylline, was suspended in whey protein isolate (WPI) solution. The suspension was dispersed in a mixture of dichloromethane and hexane containing 1% biomedical polyurethane. Protein matrices were cross-linked with 7.5-30 ml of glutaraldehyde-saturated toluene (GAST) for 1-3 hr. Microcapsules were harvested, washed, dried and analyzed for core retention, microstructure, and core release in enzyme-free simulated gastric fluid (SGF) and simulated intestinal fluid(SIF) at $37^{\circ}C$. A method consisting of double emulsification and heat gelation was also developed to prepare water-insoluble, whey protein-based microcapsules containing anhydrous milkfat (AMF) as a model apolar core. AMF was emulsified into WPI solution (15${\sim}$30%, pH 4.5-7.2) at a proportion of 25${\sim}$50%(w/w, on dry basis). The oil-in-water emulsion was then added and dispersed into corn oil ($50^{\circ}C$) to form an O/W/O double emulsion and then heated at $85^{\circ}C$ for 20 min for gelation of whey protein wall matrix. Effects of emulsion composition and pH on core retention, microstructure, and water-solubility of microcapsules were determined. Overall results suggest that whey proteins can be used in developing microcapsules for controlled and sustained core release applications.
We prepared spherical silica by minimizing the amount of oil through water/oil (W/O) emulsion. The spherical silica was successfully synthesized by using 20 to 60 mL of hexane as an oil for 283 g of water glass. The size of silica was dependent on the amount of oil where the size of silica particles increased as the amount of oil increased. The specific surface areas of samples measured using the BET method were 186 to 230 ㎡/g. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis results showed that the SiO2 content was more than 90% while sodium was 3.27~4.5 wt. %. The spherical silica prepared in this study could be optimized for mass synthesis and commercialization because the industrial sodium silicate solution was used as a precursor of Si as well as the minimum amounts of hexane and nonionic surfactant were employed.
To demonstrate the effect of formulation conditions on the controlled release of protein from poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) microspheres for use as a parenteral drug carrier, ovalbumin (OVA) microspheres were prepared using the W/O/W multiple emulsion solvent evaporation and extraction method. Methylene chloride or ethyl acetate was applied as an organic phase and poly(vinyl alcohol) as a secondary emulsion stabilizer. Low loading efficiencies of less than 20% were observed and the in vitro release of OVA showed a burst effect in all batches of different microspheres, followed by a gradual release over the next 6 weeks. Formulation processes affected the size and morphology, drug content, and the controlled release of OVA from PLGA microspheres.

In this study, we formulated oil-in-water emulsion composition for skin care products containing jadeite powder which is well known as far-infrared radiating material. Jadeite powder could sustain stable dispersion in aqueous solvents over a month and this helped mixing it high content in oil-in-water emulsion formulation. To identify the effect of jadeite as a far-infrared radiator materials relating to the skin surface temperature change, we applied emulsion formulation containing 2 weight percent jadeite powder onto facial skin surface and blank formulation together and analyzed surface temperature with thermo-vision. Our results showed that the temperature difference between jadeite powder formulation applied region and blank formulation reached to 1.5 ~ 2.0 degree Celsius. We also performed same test with nephrite powder and titanium dioxide powder but only jadeite powder containing formulation showed significant skin temperature change. To elucidate main cause of heat energy transfer, we tested heat radiation, energy dispersive spectrometer analysis and measured far infrared radiance emissivity, diffuse reflectance spectra and water evaporation rate. We found out jadeite powder could retard water evaporation effectively from the skin surface and resist temperature drop down. This is because of the innate chemical composition and surface structure of jadeite, which can bind with water molecules to form hydrogen bonds. It is concluded that we can develop novel skin care products for moisturizing and thermos with jadeite powder.

The o/w emulsions were prepared with saccharide surfactants which were sucrose monostearate(S160), sucrose distearate(S110), and POE(20) methyl glucose stearate(SSE20). And for emulsion the oils used were n-hydocarbon, squalane(SQ), liquid paraffin(LP), octylpalmitate(OP), octylstearate(OS), alkyl benzoate(AB), isostearyl benzoate(ISB). The structures of o/w emulsion droplet were investigated by laser light scattering and the fractal dimensions were calculated from light intensity curves. Increasing of concentration, chain length, and nonpolarity of oils, fractal dimensions of emulsion droplets were found greater. In general fiactal dimensions were varied from 1.7 to 2.8 and its structures were fractal But the fractal dimensions of octadecane( $C_{18}$), 50, and LP emulsified with S110 and S160 were varied from 3.0 to 3.2 and its structures were more dense. The overall fractal dimensions of S110 and S160 were varied from 2.1 to 2.6, that of SSE20 were varied from 1.5 to 2.1. So it was found that the structures of SSE20 system were less compact than that of S110 and S 160 system, because the hindrance effect of polyoxyehtylene group of SSE20 was stronger than that of sucrose of S160. The strucures of emulsion droplets changed according to the nature of emulsifiers and to compositions of oil substances which they contained, and the structures were found similar when the hydophilic moiety of emulsifiers was same.
The antioxidant ability of 80% ethanolic extract of nutmeg seed (NM80) was evaluated using in vitro assays and bulk oil and oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion matrices. The 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging, 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) cation radical scavenging, and oxygen radical antioxidant capacity (ORAC) in vitro assays were used to evaluate the antioxidant ability of the extract. The DPPH radical scavenging activities of 25, 50, 100, and 200 ㎍/mL NM80 were 12.5, 20.9, 35.1, and 62.8%, respectively, while the ABTS cation radical scavenging activities were 2.7, 6.5, 30.5, and 29.8%, respectively, demonstrating a dose-dependent effect. The ORAC value was significantly higher at an NM80 concentration of 25 ㎍/mL than the positive control (p<0.05). The conjugated dienoic acid (CDA), ρ-anisidine, and tertiary butyl alcohol values in 90-min-heated corn oil containing 200 ppm of NM80 were significantly reduced by 3.26, 16.94, and 17.34%, respectively, compared to those for the sample without NM80 (p<0.05). However, the headspace oxygen content and CDA value in the O/W emulsion containing 200 ppm of NM80 at 60℃ had 6.29 and 82.85% lower values, respectively, than those for the sample without NM80 (p<0.05). The major volatile compounds of NM80 were allyl phenoxyacetate, eugenol acetate, and eugenol. NM80 could be an effective natural antioxidant in lipid-rich foods in bulk oil or O/W emulsion matrix.
