부산지역 미세먼지에 대한 건강 취약성 평가 (Health Vulnerability Assessment for PM10 in Busan)

  • Objectives: This study seeks to evaluate the vulnerability assessment of the human health sector for $PM_{10}$, which is reflected in the regional characteristics and related disease mortality rates for $PM_{10}$ in Busan over the period of 2006-2010. Methods: According to the vulnerability concept suggested by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), vulnerability to $PM_{10}$ is comprised of the categories of exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity. The indexes of the exposure and sensitivity categories indicate positive effects, while the adaptive capacity index indicates a negative effect on vulnerability to $PM_{10}$. Variables of each category were standardized by the rescaling method, and each regional relative vulnerability was computed through the vulnerability index calculation formula. Results: The regions with a high exposure index are Jung-Gu (transportation region) and Saha-Gu (industrial region). Major factors determining the exposure index are the $PM_{10}$ concentration, days of $PM_{10}{\geq}50$, ${\mu}g/m^3$, and $PM_{10}$ emissions. The regions that show a high sensitivity index are urban and rural regions; these commonly have a high mortality rate for related disease and vulnerable populations. The regions that have a high adaptive capacity index are Jung-Gu, Gangseo-Gu, and Busanjin-Gu, all of which have a high level of economic/welfare/health care factors. The high-vulnerability synthesis of the exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity indexes show that Dong-Gu and Seo-Gu have a risk for $PM_{10}$ potential effects and a low adaptive capacity. Conclusions: This study presents the vulnerability index to $PM_{10}$ through a relative comparison using quantitative evaluation to draw regional priorities. Therefore, it provides basic data to reflect environmental health influences in favor of an adaptive policy limiting damage to human health caused by vulnerability to $PM_{10}$.

  • This paper provides some of the scientific background on how projected environmental conditions could affect weeds and weed management in crops. Elevated $CO_2$ levels may have positive effects on crop competitiveness with $C_4$ weeds, but these are generally outnumbered by $C_3$ species in weed populations. Moreover, higher temperatures and drought will favor $C_4$ over $C_3$ plants. The implementation of climate change adaptation technologies, such as drought-tolerant germplasm and water-saving irrigation regimes, will have consequences for crop-weed competition. Rainfed production systems are thought to be most vulnerable to the direct effects of climate change and are likely to face increased competition from $C_4$ and parasitic weeds. Biotic stress-tolerant crop cultivars to be developed for these systems should encompass weed competitiveness and parasitic-weed resistance. In irrigated systems, indirect effects will be more important and weed management strategies should be diversified to lessen dependency on herbicides and mechanical control, and be targeted to perennial rhizomatous ($C_3$) weeds. Water-saving production methods that replace a weed-suppressive floodwater layer by intermittent or continuous periods of aerobic conditions necessitate additional weed management strategies to address the inherent increases in weed competition. Thus, climatic conditions have a great effect on weed population dynamics all over the world.

Avulsion injuries: an update on radiologic findings

  • Avulsion injuries result from the application of a tensile force to a musculoskeletal unit or ligament. Although injuries tend to occur more commonly in skeletally immature populations due to the weakness of their apophysis, adults may also be subject to avulsion fractures, particularly those with osteoporotic bones. The most common sites of avulsion injuries in adolescents and children are apophyses of the pelvis and knee. In adults, avulsion injuries commonly occur within the tendon due to underlying degeneration or tendinosis. However, any location can be involved in avulsion injuries. Radiography is the first imaging modality to diagnose avulsion injury, although advanced imaging modalities are occasionally required to identify subtle lesions or to fully delineate the extent of the injury. Ultrasonography has a high spatial resolution with a dynamic assessment potential and allows the comparison of a bone avulsion with the opposite side. Computed tomography is more sensitive for depicting a tiny osseous fragment located adjacent to the expected attachment site of a ligament, tendon, or capsule. Moreover, magnetic resonance imaging is the best imaging modality for the evaluation of soft tissue abnormalities, especially the affected muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Acute avulsion injuries usually manifest as avulsed bone fragments. In contrast, chronic injuries can easily mimic other disease processes, such as infections or neoplasms. Therefore, recognizing the vulnerable sites and characteristic imaging features of avulsion fractures would be helpful in ensuring accurate diagnosis and appropriate patient management. To this end, familiarity with musculoskeletal anatomy and mechanism of injury is necessary.

An Adaptive Local Management Approach Cannot Overcome Large-Scale Trends: A Long-Term Case-Study for Saxifraga hirculus Conservation

  • Saxifraga hirculus is classified as a vulnerable plant species in Europe, and it is confined to base-rich flushes in the British uplands. However, a lack of available information about its conservation status hampers the development of adaptive strategies for its in-situ conservation, especially with respect to grazing. To assess the effectiveness of sheep grazing in maintaining viable populations of S. hirculus, we compared the community dynamics of the vegetation in a base-rich flush over 44 years in two plots: one sheep-grazed under business-as-usual sheep grazing densities and the other fenced to exclude grazing. The plots were established in 1972, and the abundances of all vascular plants, bryophytes, and litter were measured at six intervals until 2016. Our results showed that although the presence of S. hirculus was maintained in both plots over the 44 years, it declined and reached a minimum between 1995 and 2010, when it was close to extinction. Since 2013, Saxifraga has recovered only slightly. Interestingly, the S. hirculus response appeared to be independent of grazing treatment, but it mirrored wider changes in the vegetation composition and structure within the flush over the 44 years. These changes are similar to others reported in broader uplands that have been attributed to a combination of reduced nitrogen and sulfur deposition and global warming. Thus, the simple adaptive management approach of "just managing" sheep grazing appeared ineffectual for preserving the S. hirculus population. S. hirculus showed signs of recovery at the end of the study period within this base-rich flush.

Home Healthcare Service Awareness Survey for Korean Medicine Doctors: a survey study

  • Objectives: Discussions regarding "medical blind spots" in Korea's "aging society" are continuously rising. In addition, the demand for medical attention and care for the elderly and vulnerable populations continues to increase. Given this, the government is promoting the "home healthcare service" project. This study aims to lay the foundation for promoting this project by investigating the perception of clinical Korean Medicine (KM) doctors in the "community health care" project. Methods: With the cooperation of the Association of Korean Medicine, we sent a questionnaire to all KM doctors through e-mail. The survey included personal information, awareness, appropriate disease and intervention, proper visit location, and pros and cons. Results: A total of 602 responses were collected and analyzed. Approximately 20% of the doctors answered that they were well aware of the service, while 55% responded that they did not know about it. For a visit, a KM doctor selected the appropriate diseases in the order of stroke, dementia and Parkinson's disease, osteoarthritis, and chronic diseases. Among treatments, acupuncture, moxibustion, and herbal medicine exhibited similar results. The most common opinion was that KM doctors should schedule their visits once a week for 6-12 months, which was the most prolonged period among the given options. More than 80% (84.1%) of the doctors replied that care projects were highly essential, and about 63.8% expressed their willingness to participate in these projects. Conclusion: To provide appropriate home health care, we must raise awareness among Korean medicine doctors. In addition, the healthcare budget must be increased to provide the required support.

코로나19에 대응하는 공공도서관 서비스 분석 및 확대방안 연구 (A Study on the Analysis and Expansion Plan of Public Library Services in the COVID-19 Pandemic)

  • 코로나19 팬데믹은 근대 이래로 지구촌 공공도서관이 수행해 왔던 지식정보서비스 지형을 크게 변화시켰다. 특히 사회적 거리두기가 일상화되면서 문화활동의 위축과 온라인 플랫폼으로의 이동은 도서관 방문·이용서비스에 부정적인 영향을 주었고 대출과 열람, 공간과 시설 이용, 상호대차서비스, 프로그램 운영, 아웃리치서비스 등을 크게 위축시켰다. 이에 본 연구는 코로나19를 계기로 국내외 공공도서관이 제공하는 서비스 현황을 조사·분석하고, 사서의 인식을 설문조사한 결과를 반영하여 코로나19에 대응하는 실제적인 서비스 개선 및 확대 방안을 제안하였다. 구체적으로 살펴보면, 열람 및 대출서비스를 위한 온라인 예약시스템 개선 및 다양한 아웃리치서비스 개발·제공, 전자자료 확보 및 서비스 확대, 온라인 프로그램 서비스(독서, 문화, 평생학습 등) 확대, 지식정보 취약계층을 위한 도서관서비스 강화, 신종 감염병 관련 정보 포털서비스 제공, 시설과 공간 제공서비스 강화, 감염병 대응지침 마련과 사서 역량강화를 위한 교육·훈련 제공 등이 있다.

COVID-19 팬데믹 상황에서 제천시 로컬푸드에 대한 지역사회 소비자 인식과 이용 현황: 기술 연구 (Understanding consumer awareness and utilization of local food in Jecheon during the COVID-19 pandemic: a descriptive study)

  • Objectives: This study aims to explore consumer awareness and usage patterns of local food in Jecheon city during the COVID-19 pandemic, contributing to the establishment of the Jecheon City Food Plan. Methods: Surveys were conducted from July 24 to August 24, 2021, using a combination of web-link and self-administered methods for adults living in Jecheon city (n = 250). Descriptive analysis, t-test, importance and satisfaction analysis (ISA) of local food choice attributes were performed using SPSS Statistics. Results: Participants prioritized freshness when purchasing agricultural products. The freshness of Jecheon local food was the selection attribute with the highest consumer satisfaction and could provide purchase motivation. Approximately 73.6% of respondents understood the concept of local food, and 70% were familiar with Jecheon's local food. Notably, 94.8% expressed an intention to purchase but held negative views on selling local food in other areas. The need to increase the supply of local food to vulnerable populations and public school catering was highly recognized. The ISA identified 'affordable price', 'delivery service', and 'product information' as areas requiring improvement. On the other hand, 'freshness of products', 'quality for the price', and 'support for local farmers and economy' were identified as attributes to be maintained and strengthened. Conclusions: Consumers in Jecheon city recognized local foods as more than just 'consumer goods'. Our findings suggest the need for further research on local food revitalization and more comprehensive local food planning to enhance consumer satisfaction.

Utilization of the bar gene to develop an efficient method for detection of the pollen-mediated gene flow in Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa spp. pekinensis)

  • To develop an efficient screening method for detection of the transgene in Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa spp. pekinensis) utilizing Basta spray, optimal conditions for Basta application were examined in this study. Two transgenic Chinese cabbage lines were obtained through Agrobacterium-mediated transformation and used as transgenic positive controls in the Basta screening experiment. Differential concentrations of glufosinate-ammonium were sprayed into three different growth stages of 12 commercial Chinese cabbage cultivars. The results showed that no plants could survive higher than 0.05% glufosinate-ammonium, and plants at the 2-3 leaf stage were most vulnerable to glufosinate-ammonium. On the other hand, no damage was observed in the transgenic control plants. Reliability of the Basta spray method was proven by showing perfect co-segregation of the tolerance to glufosinate-ammonium and the presence of the bar gene in T1 segregating populations of the transgenic lines, as revealed by both PCR and Southern blot analyses. Using the developed Basta screening method, we tried to investigate the transgene flow through pollen dispersal, but failed to detect any transgene-containing non-transgenic Chinese cabbages whose parents had been planted adjacent to transgenic Chinese cabbages in field conditions. However, the transgene was successfully detected using Basta spray from the non-transgenic plants bearing the transgene introduced by hand-pollination. Since the Basta spray method developed in this study is easy to apply and economical, it will be a valuable tool for understanding the mechanism of gene flow through pollen transfer and for establishing a biosafety test protocol for genetically modified (GM) Chinese cabbage cultivars.

가는돌고기(Pseudopuntungia tenuicorpa) 보전을 위한 유전적 다양성 연구 (Genetic Diversity of the Slender Shinner(Pseudopuntungia tenuicorpa) and Its Conservational Implications)

  • 가는돌고기(Pseudopungtungia tenuicorpa)는 8~10 cm 크기의 소형 잉어과 어류로 전 세계에서 한국의 한강 그리고 임진강에만 서식하는 멸종위기종이다. 가는돌고기는 국내 담수의 상위 포식자 중 하나인 꺽지 수컷이 돌보는 수정된 알이 있는 둥지에 탁란(brood parasitism)을 하거나 작은 바위에 생긴 틈에 산란을 하는 생식 행동을 보인다. 이 종의 특이한 생식 생태는 환경 파괴가 극심한 현대 사회에서 산란 장소를 더욱 제한할 가능성이 높아 특별한 관리와 보전 전략이 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 microsatellites와 mtDNA control region 유전자를 이용하여 가는돌고기의 종 보전 관리 전략에 필요한 개체군 수준의 유전적 다양성 등 기초자료를 확보하고자 하였다. 유전체 분석에서 얻어진 28개의 microsatellite 유전자들을 이용하여 한강의 3지역에서 채집된 67개체들의 유전자형을 밝혔다. 본 microsatellite 유전자 분석 결과, 가는돌고기는 일반적으로 알려진 담수어류의 microsatellite 다양성 정도를 훨씬 뛰어 넘는 높은 유전적 다양성을 보여주었고(평균 이형접합자 빈도 예측치=0.914; 유전자 당 평균 대립 인자 빈도=27.9), 개체군 감소나 inbreeding의 흔적은 나타나지 않았다. 그러나 북한강과 남한강 사이의 유전적 분화가 두드러졌다. 이런 유전적 구조는 14개 haplotype이 발견된 mtDNA 분석 결과에서도 유사하게 나타났다. 매우 좁은 지역에 서식하는 고유 멸종위기종에서 유전자 흐름의 제한 가능성이 나타났기 때문에, 장기적 측면에서 개체군들의 크기에 대한 고민이 필요하다. 추후 적응 유전적 분석 결과에서도 유사한 결과가 나타난다면, 북한강과 남한강 개체군들은 별도 관리가 이루어져야 하며, 복원 계획에도 이러한 유전적 구조에 대한 검토가 수반되어야 할 것이다.

  • Inpatients are mostly occupied in bed with restricted activity, nearly all patient populations are at risk for the occurrence of skeletal muscle atrophy due to decreased level of activity. Restriction of mobility is far greater in pediatric patients compared with adult patients since almost all the activities of daily living is performed by parents or caregivers. It could be assumed that pediatric patients are more vulnerable to skeletal muscle atrophy than adult patients, however, there have been no attempts to reduce the atrophy of developing muscle. Therefore it is important to determine the effect of exercise in developing muscle during decreased activity. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of periodic weight support during hindlimb suspension on the mass and cross-sectional area of Type I and II fibers in developing soleus(Type I ) muscle. To examine the effectiveness of periodic weight support activity in maintaining mass and fiber size. the hindlimb of young female Wistar rats was suspended(HS) and half of these rats walked on a treadmill for 45min / day(15min every 4h) at 5m / min at a 15 grade(HS-WS). After 7days of hindlimb suspension, soleus wet weight was 28. 57% smaller and relative soleus weight was 28. 21% smaller in comparison with con-trol rats (p〈0.05) Soleus wet weight and relative soleus weight increased by 67.72% and 71.43% each with periodic weight support activity during hindlimb suspension (p〈0.01, p〈0.005), moreover soleus wet weight and relative soleus weight of the HS -WS rats were greater than those of the control group. No change was observed in fiber type percentage of the developing soleus muscle after 1 week of hindlimb suspension plus weight support activity. Type I and II fiber cross-sectional areas of the developing soleus muscle were 50.45% and 43.39% lower in the HS group than in the control group (p〈0.0001), type I and II fiber cross-sectional areas of the developing soleus were 24.49% and 29.93% greater in the HS - WS group than in the HS rats (p〈0.0001), whereas Type I and II fiber cross-sectional areas of HS - WS group were less than those of the control group, The results suggest that periodic weight support activity can ameliorate developing soleus muscle atrophy induced by hindlimb suspension, even in type II fibers that would not have been expected to be recruited by this type of neuromuscular demand. Clinical experimental study is needed to deter-mine the effect of periodic weight bearing exercise on developing atrophied leg muscle based on these results.
