  • In this study, construction modulus, void ratio and settlement characteristics of 38 CFRD in domestic and foreign countries was investigated from monitoring data and the effect of field dry density and void ratio to dam body was analyzed. The standard void ratio of CFRD that can be easily used for dam designer and field engineer was proposed from the monitoring data. It was conformed that we can get the degree of compaction needed for reasonable compaction of dam body by calculating the field dry density from inverse operation of the standard void ratio. It was thought that the standard void ratio of CFRD is 0.2 as shape factor is under 4 and is 0.28 as shape factor is over 4.

  • Upsetting is performed in open-die press forging to deform metal in all directions in order to enhance soundness of a product and reduce directionality of properties caused by casting. It is necessary to ensure sufficient forging ratio for subsequent cogging operations and consolidate the void along the centerline. To obtain these benefits, the upper die shape (dome and dished shape) is considered as an upsetting parameter. Thermo-viscoplastic finite element analysis has been carried out so as to understand the influence of upper die shape on the effective strain, hydrostatic stress and temperature in the upset-forged ingots without internal defects. The analysis is focused on the investigation into internal void closure in ingots with pipe holes and circular voids. The computational results have shown that the volume fraction of the void is independent of the circular void size and the closure of internal voids is much more influenced by the effective strain than the hydrostatic stress around the void. It is finally suggested that the height reduction must be over 35% for consolidation of internal voids.

  • The properties, behavior and reliability of the residual void in blind via hole(BVH) were carried out for the shape of BVH using the void extraction process. The residual void was perfectly removed in the specimens applied by the void extraction process, which was improved by 40% rather than the conventional process. The residual void in BVH was to be eliminated under a condition of 1.5 atm for more 30 sec with regardless of the shape of BVH. It was also observed that the residual void in BVH was not formed after the reliability test with JEDEC standard.

  • This paper describes the speckle shearing interferometry, a non-destructive optical method, for quantitative estimation of void defect and monitoring separation defect inside of a pneumatic tire. Previous shearing interferometry has not supplied quantitative result of inside defect, due to effective factors. In the study, factors related to the details of an inside defect are classified and optimized with pipeline simulator. The size and the shape of defect can be estimated accurately to find a critical point and also is closely related with shearing direction. The technique is applied for quantitative estimation of defects inside of a pneumatic tire. The actual traveling tire is monitored to reveal the cause of separation and the starting points. And also unknown void defects on tread are inspected and the size and shape of defects are estimated which has good agreement with the result of visual inspection.

  • The void volume fraction of cables is one of the effective parameters to characterize the joints of superconducting magnet. Because electrical resistance and cooling stability in the CICC (Cable-in-Conduit Conductors) joint are governed by the void volume fraction, it should be controlled constantly in the termination of cable. The change of cross-section shape in the cable was fecund during the unidirectional compaction of terminal sleeve. The non-uniform thickness of the sleeve after compaction is expected because the loading is not taxi-symmetric, and the plastic flow is also not axi-symmetric. The CICC was compacted from 45% void volume fraction to 15% by using two-piece compaction jig, which could be pressed mini-directionally. Commercial code, ABAQUS, was used to analyze the plastic flow in the sleeve during the unidirectional compaction. The increment of radius of curvature of compaction jig could minimize the change of the deformed shape of cables. The calculated results were agreed with the experimental observations.

  • In this work, the closing behavior of cylindrical-shaped voids was experimentally investigated according to various parameters such as reduction ratio in height, initial void size and billet rotation during hot open die forging process. The reduction ratio in height, number of path, and billet rotation were chosen as key process parameters which influence the void closing behavior including the change of void shape and size. On the other hand, values of die overlapping and die width ratio were set to be constant. Void closing behavior was estimated by microscopic observation. Based on the observations, it was confirmed that application of billet rotation is more efficient to eliminate the void with less reduction ratio in height. The experimental results obtained from this study could be helpful to establish the optimum path schedule of open die forging process.

  • More than effectively judging the existence of voids behind concrete tunnel linings or under concrete pavements, this research aims to develop the analysis algorithm of radar capable of estimation of the shape of specific voids. To detect or estimate void shapes in non-reinforced concrete, the simulation analysis model of transmission and reflection wave of electromagnetic radar is used. This radar simulation model is carried out with various void shapes. As the results, a proposed method in this study has a possibility of detecting or estimating void shapes with good accuracy.

  • In this study, the deformation behavior of Daegok dam during the construction was analyzed based on the measurement data and a comparative analysis with foreign CFRD measurements was performed. From measuring settlements of Daegok dam with depth, overall behavior was evaluated to be consistent with measured data of other CFRD dams. In addition, construction modulus, void ratio and shape factor were also evaluated to be major factors in predicting the settlement behavior during construction of CFRD-typed dam from measured data of 38 CFRD-typed dams, and the maximum internal settlement is proportional to the void ratio. From the relationship between the maximum internal settlement and the height of a dam, 26 dams were assessed to have its relative modulus ranging between 0.001 and 0.01. In case of general CFRD, the average modulus of maximum internal settlement to the height of a dam is estimated to be 0.005. In case of a low void ratio, the construction modulus was high with its shape factor below 4. On the other hand, in case of a high void ratio, the relative settlement rate was high with its shape factor more than 4.

  • It is shown in the present study that during the HTS (hot temperature storage) test, the metal contamination by impure elements can be highly susceptible to the void formation, leading to the open failure of the power line in the memory device. Such a functional failure associated with the metal contamination was investigated to be dominant in the early stages of the HTS test while the formation of a stress-driven void is mainly observed in the later stages. In particular, it was found that the void formed in the contaminated metal takes on a slit-like shape which has been known to be characteristic of the stress-related voiding. The impure elements leading to the metal degradation were identified to be carbon and oxygen introduced during the metal sputtering process. The experimental works show that the device reliability was significantly improved by reducing the level of such impure elements within metal. • The presence of voids behind tunnel linings is very likely to result in settlement or structural collapse. One proposed method of detecting such voids by non-destructive method is radar. More than effectively judging the existence of voids behind tunnel linings, this study aims to develop the analysis algorithm of radar capable of estimation of the shape of specific voids. To acquire directional information and estimate the shape of three-dimensional voids, the radar of three-dipole antenna type is used. As a foundation to this ongoing research, an investigation of microwave polarization methods using three-dipole antenna carried out with various void orientations and void geometries. As a result, it is clarified that the response of four microwave polarization modes depends on void geometry and thus there is a possibility of identifying the geometry and orientation (the shape) of specific voids using radar of three-dipole antenna type.
