흡연대학생의 비타민 C 섭취량과 혈청수준 (Vitamin C Intake and Serum Leverls in Smoking College Students)

  • As ciarette smoking adversely affects vitamin C metabolism in humans, smokers need substantially more vitamin C intake than do non-smokers to achieve similar serum vitamin C concentration. To provide the basic information currently available for the determination of vitamin C requirement for Korean smokers, we investigated the differences the serum vitamin C values between smokers(n=53) and non-smokers(n=62) in relation to their intake of the vitamin through diet in 115 male college students, who had not been using vitamin C supplements. Dietary intakes of vitamin C were determined by a 24-hour recall, and serum vitamin C was determined using the 2, 4-dinitrophenylhydrazine method. The mean vitamin C intakes of smokers and non-smokers were consuming less than 75% of the Koeran RDA for vitamin c in their diet. Smokers consumed yellow and green leafy vegetables more often (P=0.02) and fresh fruits less often(P=0.006) than non-smokers. The mean serum vitamin C concentration of smokers consuming the same amounts of vitamine C as non-smokers, 64.3 umol/1, were 20% lower than for non-smokers, 80.1 umol/l(P<0.05). The risk of low serum vitamin C concentration (LoC) among smokers were 3.8% compared with 1.6% in non-smokers, and the odd ratio for LoC risk was 2.43. There were no correlations between dietary and serum vitamin C for smokers and non-smokers. It was concluded that smokers might require at least 20% more vitamin C to reach the same concentration comparable to non-smokers.

  • 저자들은 출생 3개월 경 모유에서 분유로 수유를 바꾸면서 시작된 반복되는 구토, 탈수, 성장장애, 대사성 산증, 고암모니아혈증을 보이는 6개월된 남아에서 메틸말로닐 산혈증으로 진단하고 단백질 제한 식이와 비타민 $B_{12}$ 투여로 호전을 보이고 있는 환아 1례를 경험하였기에 문헌고찰과 함께 보고하는 바이다.

The Stydy on Application to Cosmetics of Phellinus Iimteus

  • Phellinus linteus was artificially cultivated in kangwon province in Korea. The air-dried phellinus linteus was frozen in liquid nitrogen tank and powdered in jar. 10g of the powder was extracted with each 200g of ethanol, methanol, distilled water and 1,3-butylene glycol/distilled water 4 hours under refluxing and then the liquidextract was concentrated under reduced pressure. As a result of analysis by high performance liquid chromatography and thin layer chromarography, many kinds of sugar and flavonoids were detected. Also we knew that phellinus linteus' extract had a strong UV-ray absorption. In the efficacy test for applying to cosmetics, free radical scavenging effect was confirmed. As a result, 2% of sample was the most potent inhibitory effect and the free radical savenging activity, was 0.31%. This is more effective than any other meterial. In the test of antioxidative activity against lipid autoxidation, phellinus linteus' extract had a good effect by 46% while vitamine E was 42.3%. The immunological activity of phellinus linteus was showed through the activation of macrophage cell. Actually, phellinus linteus activated macrophage function of 1.1-1.8 times including nitrite production compared to control. The whitening effect of phellinus linteus was showed through the inhibition of tyrosinase activity, melanin biosynthesis of S. bikiniensis and B-16 melanoma cells. Phellinus linteus' extract was showed strong mushroom tyrosinase inhibitory activity with IC50 value of 0.5% and inhibited melanin biosynthesis with 28mm inhibition zone at 0.005%/paper disc in S. bikinniensis, a bacterium used as an indicator organism in this work. Also it inhibited melanin biosynthesis in B-16 melanoma cells with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 0.134%.

Peroxyl Radical Scavenging Capacity of the Flavonolignan Silybin, Ginkgo Biloba Extract EGb 761, American Green Tea and a Series of Germacranolides

  • We report on the applicability oj a method recently developed in our laboratory for measuring the antioxidant potential of isolated chemicals and extracts derived from natural products. Peroxyl radicals generated by thermal homolysis of 2,2'-azobis-amidinopropane (ABAP) oxidize $\alpha$-keto-${\gamma}$-methiolbutyric acid (KMBA) to ethylene, which is monitored by gas chromatography. Inhibition of ethylene formation in the presence of antioxidants that compete with KMBA for peroxyl radicals is the basis of the Total Oxyradical Scavenging Capacity Assay (TOSCA; Winston et al., 1998). Antioxidative activities of water-soluble extracts of American green tea, the anti-hepatotoxic flavonolignan from milk thistle (Silybum marianum) silybin, Ginkgo biloba extract EGb 761, and a series of naturally occuring sesquiterpene lactones (all ger-macranolides found in in fungi, liverworts, and plants) were studied. The specific TOSC value per $\mu$M silybin was 5.2, which is essentially comparable to that of Trolo $x^{ⓡ}$, a water-soluble vitamine E analog. Tea and Ginkgo extracts exhibited potent peroxyl radical scavenging capacity with values, respectively of =1700 and 1000 $\mu$mols Trolo $x^{ⓡ}$ equivalent per gram dry matter. The known anti-inflammatory activity of some germacranolides prompted study of their antioxidant capacity. None of the lactones exhibited antioxidant capacity toward peroxyl radicals comparable to Trolo $x^{ⓡ}$; costunilide, the most lipophilic, had a TOSC value = to glutathione. The potential role of peroxyl radicals in lipidperoxidation, other cellular damage, and var-ious disease states suggest a possible preventive role for silybin, green tea and Ginkgo biloba in oxidative stress caused by these free radical species.ecies.

콩나물의 무기이온 및 비타민 함량 (Contents of Minerals and Vitamines in Soybean Sprouts)

  • 우량 나물콩 품종 육성을 위한 자료로 활용하고자 시판 콩나물 및 장려품종 나물콩으로 재배된 콩나물을 사용하여 콩나물의 무기이온 함량과 비타민 함량을 분석하였다. 1. 콩나물의 무기이온 함량은 K, Ca, Mg, Na, Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu의 순으로 많이 함유되어 있었으며, 콩나물을 자엽과 배축으로 분리하여 함량을 분석한 결과 자엽에서의 무기이온 함량은 전체 콩나물과 같은 양상으로 축적되어 있었으나 배축에서는 다른 경향을 나타내었다. 2. 뜨거운 물에 콩나물을 데칠 경우 많은 양의 무기이온이 물로 용출되며 특히 K의 함량 감소가 컸다. 3. 콩나물의 비타민 C 함량은 품종에 따라 변이가 있었으며, 콩나물을 열처리할 경우 비타민 C는 급속하게 감소되었다. 4. 콩나물에서의 비타민 B군(niacine, thiamin, pyridoxin)은 품종별로 함량 차이가 있었으며 대부분 자엽부위에 축적되어 있었다.

여대생의 식품 및 영양소 섭취량 조사 (A Survey of Food and Nutrient Intakes in Female College Students)

  • Purpose: The study was done to investigate Food and Nutrient Intakes of female college students and define differences between teen-age groups and women in their twenties. Method: The subjects of this study were 821 female college students. They were eighteen to twenty nine years old. Nutrient intakes were measured by the Moon, S. J. Scale (1980). Data was collected from June 13 to June, 27. Data was analyzed with the SPSS program by Chi-test, t-test and Pearson's correlation coefficients. Result: Female college students' mean intake of calories, protein, fat, and carbohydrates were $1560.7{\pm}367.71kcal,\;62.0{\pm}19.03g,\;33.1{\pm}9.85g,\;and\;253.7{\pm}57.52g$ respectively. Their mean intake of calcium, phosphorus and iron were $592.9{\pm}221.82mg,\;918.2{\pm}284.24mg\;and\;13.7{\pm}4.50mg$ respectively. Intake of calories, calcium, iron and vitamine B1 were below their Percent of Recommended Intake. Nutrient intakes showed a significant difference between age groups. Teen-age female college students had more nutrient intakes than the women in their twenties. In addition, there was a difference in food consumption behaviors between the teen-age group and the twenty-something group. Conclusion: The nutrient intake of female college students changed by age. Many teen-age female college students ate breakfast well, thus their intake of calories, protein, fat, carbohydrates, minerals such as calcium, phosporus and vitamins was significantly higher than the over twenty years old students. Teen-age female college students like fruits and sugars but over twenty years college students preferred coffee. This study can be useful in directing a dietary consumption status of women to improve nutritional health.

금식 또는 Vitamin$B_6$ 보충급식이 흰쥐의 Vitamin B6 대사에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Fasting and Vitamin B6 Repletion on Vitamin$B_6$ Metabolism in Rats)

  • The purpose of this study were to investigate the effect of fasting and vitamin B6 repletion on tissue concentration of pyridoxal 5-phosphate and urinary excreteion of 4-pyridoxic acid in vitamin B6 deficient rats. Sixty six rats(6 per group) were fed either a vitamin B6 deficient diet (-B6) or a control diet (+B6) for 6 weeks and then rats were repleted with +B6 diet for 2 weeks. Rats were fasted for 1 and 3 days and for 3 days after repletion. Pyridoxal 5-phosphate (PLP) concentration in plasma, liver, skeletal muscle, and heart muscle and urinary 4-pyridoxic acid (4-PA) excretion were compared. Fasting resulted in a significant increase in PLP concentration in the plasma, liver and heart muscle of rats fed the -B6 diet. Skeletal muscle PLP concentration was significantly decreased in +B6 rats but not in -B6 rats. Following vitamin B6 repletion, PLP concentration in the plasma, liver and heart muscle in previously -B6 rats was similar to the respective concentration in +B6 rats while PLP concentration in the skeletal muscle of previously -B6 rats increased, but it was not reached to that of +B6 rats. At day 1 and 2 of the fast, urinary 4-PT excretion increased in both +B6 and -B6 rats although there was no supply of vitamin B6 due to fasting. These results suggest that vitami B6 is redistributed as PLP when there is a caloric deficit and PLP is supplied by an endogenous source, possibly PLP bound to skeletal muscle glycogen phosphorylase.

  • 1) 돌발성난청의 치료성적은 대조군, 성상신경절차 단군 각각 완전회복 28.6%, 18.5%, 부분회복은 6.1%, 7.4%, 경도회복은 16.3%, 25.9%로 성상신경절차단군이 예후가 나쁜 인자가 많았음에도 불구하고 두군사이에 유의한 차이가 없었다. 2) 회복예후는 두통이 수반될 때, 청력형이 농형일 때 예후가 불량하였고, 발증에서 치료시작까지의 기간이 빠를수록 좋았으며 특히 성상신경절차단을 2주 이내에 시행한 경우에는 반응이 없었던 예가 없었다.

  • 1, 25(OH)2-23ene-D3 is a novel vitamine D3 analog which has a double bond between C-23 and C-24. We describe the effects of this analog on cell differentiation and cell proliferation in vitro using the human histiocytic lymphoma cell line U937, and on calcium metabolism in rats in vivo. In the present investigation 1, 25(OH)2-23ene-D3 was compared to the natural metabolite of vitamin D3, 1$\alpha$, 25-dihydroxycholecalciferol[1, 25(OH)2-23ene-D3 was more potent than 1, 25(OH)2-23ene-D3 for inhibition of proliferation and induction of differentiation of U937 cells. Especially, its effect on induction of differentiation, as measured by superoxide production and nonspecific esterase(NSE) activity, was about 20-fold more potent that 1, 25(OH)2-23ene-D3. This analog morphologically and functionally differentiated U937 cells to monocyte-macrophage phenotype showing a decrease of N/C ratio in Giemsa staining and the increase of adherence ability to surface. Intraperitoneal administration of 1, 25(OH)2-23ene-D3 to rats showed that the compound had at least 50 times less activity than 1, 25(OH)2-23ene-D3 in causing hypercalcemia and hypercalciuria. The strong direct effects of 1, 25(OH)2-23ene-D3 on cell proliferation and cell differentiation, coupled with its decreased activity of calcium metabolism make this compound an interesting candidate for clinical studies including patients with leukemia, as well as several skin disorders, such as psoriasis.
