The Biological Activity from Prunella vulgaris Extracts (하고초(Prunella vulgaris) 추출물의 생리활성)

  • The phenolic compounds of water extracts from Prunella vulgaris were highest at 9.25 mg/g, respectively, when various extraction solvents were used. The optimum condition for extracting phenolic compounds from Prunella vulgaris was extraction in water for 18hr. The DPPH-scavenging activities of Prunella vulgaris were highest at the water extracts. The ABTS radical cation decolorization was higher than 40% in the range of 0~100% ethanol extract section. The antioxidant protection factor on the lipophilic phenolic metabolites was shown to be 1.1 PF in the water extracts from Prunella vulgaris. The TBARS was lower than the control ($0.53{\mu}M$) in all the sections. The tyrosinase inhibitory effect, which is related to skin whitening, was above 40%, and for the anti-wrinkle effect, the elastase inhibition activity was above 40% at 0.2 mg/mL. The astringent effect of the Prunella vulgaris 40% ethanol extracts was 98.1% at 1 mg/mL. As a result, it can be concluded that Prunella vulgaris has the potential to be used as a cosmetic material.

The Effects of Added Sesame Powder on the Quality of Baechukimchi (참깨가루의 첨가가 배추김치의 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • In this study, we evaluated the effects of sesame powder on the fermentation of Baechukimchi, by assessing sensory, physicochemical, and microbiological properties during up to 25 days of fermentation. The Baechukimchi, with various levels [0, 1, 2, 3, 4%(w/w)] of sesame powder, was fermented at $10^{\circ}C$. The product containing the control and 1% sesame powder evidenced the highest scores for appearance and smell. Taste and texture were highest in the 1% and 2% sesame powder, and the overall acceptability was highest in the 2% sesame powder sample. During fermentation, titratable acidity increased while pH gradually decreased. pH was higher in the sample with sesame powder than in the control, and the titratable acidity increased with increasing sesame powder content on day O. Reducing sugar increased sharply during fermentation, and then gradually decreased. In particular, the 2% sesame powder sample maintained the highest content. Total vitamin C was slightly increased at initial fermentation and then steadily decreased. The total polyphenol content and antioxidant effect of the experimental groups with added sesame powder were higher than those of the controls. Additionally, the time required to achieve maximum levels of lactic acid bacteria, as determined by log numbers of cells and total viable cells, were more delayed in the experimental groups with added sesame powder than in the controls. Our results indicated that the Baechukimchi with $1{\sim}2%$ added sesame powder was acceptable.

Association Between Parental Socioeconomic Level, Overweight, and Eating Habits with Diet Quality in Korean Sixth Grade School Children (부모의 사회경제적 수준 (가구 월수입, 부모 교육수준)과 초등학교 6학년 학생의 과체중 및 식습관, 식사 질과의 관계)

  • This study investigated the association among parental socioeconomic level, overweight, and eating habits with diet quality in Korean sixth grade school children. A 3-day dietary survey was conducted, and a questionnaire and anthropometric data were collected from the Korean child obesity cohort (320 boys and 345 girls). The children were classified into two groups (low or high level) based on monthly household income and paternal and maternal education status. Lower maternal education status was associated with a higher risk for overweight in girls (odd ratio, 1.91; 95% confidence interval 1.07-3.44), whereas belonging to a higher socioeconomic group in terms of parental income or parental education level resulted in the consumption of significantly more fruit. Boys did not show significant differences in the intake of most nutrients or diet quality regardless of socioeconomic status. However, girls in the lower socioeconomic group had a lower food habit score (higher frequency of breakfast skipping and ramen noodle consumption), diet quality, and intake of nutrients (carbohydrate, vitamin C, potassium, and fiber) than those in the higher socioeconomic group. Therefore future nutrition policies and interventions should support parents and children with lower socioeconomic status to develop health-related behaviors that may prevent childhood overweight.

2DEG Transport Analysis in AlGaAs/GaAs Interface by MONTE-CARLO Method (MONTE-CARLO 방법에 의한 AlGaAs/GaAs 계면의 전자 전달특성 분석)

  • Transport properties of 2DEG at AlGaAs/GaAs interface such as average electron energy, flight distance, each valley occupancy ratio, average electron velocity for various fields are investigated by MONTE-CARLO method. As the electric field increases, more electrons transit drastically from (000) valley to (000) upper valley. This phenomenon shows the nonstationary effect such as velocity overshoot. The duration of the transient decreases from about 1.4 psec for electric field E = 7KV/cm to about 0.7 psec for 12KV/cm. The average electron velocity during transient transport in 2DEG is about 8 times the steady-state velocity for E = 12KV/cm at room temperature. In comparison with bulk GaAs the peak velocity in the 2DEG is higher than that in even pure bulk GaAs at electric field E = 7 KV/cm. On the basis of the fact that the electrons in the 2DEG have larger peak velocity and shorter transient time of velocity than those in the bulk GaAs, it is suggested that the device with 2DEG may obtain higher mobility than that with bulk GaAs.

Yellowish Friable Embryogenic Callus (YFEC) Production and Plant Regeneration from Immature Embryo Cultures of Domestic Maize Cultivars and Genotypes (Zea may L.) (국내 옥수수 품종 및 계통의 미숙배 배양으로부터 Yellowish Friable Embryogenic 캘러스 (YFEC) 생산과 식물체 재생)

  • Immature embryos of 3 cultivars (Du Me Chal, Mi Baek Chal, Heug Jeom Chal) and 5 genotypes (HW1, KL103, HW3, HW4, KW7) were cultured on medium containing MS salts, Eriksson's vitamins, 1 mg/L 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, 25 mM proline, 100 mg/L casamino acid, 3 mM MES, 1.7 mg/L $AgNO_3$ and 20 g/L sucrose (SIM). Frequency of somatic embryo formation on explant of immature embryos showed in HW1 (45.20%), KL103 (5.75%), HW3 (37.20%), HW4 (30.10%), KW70 (55.20%), Mi Baek Chal (18.74%), Heug Jeom Chal (22.41%), Du Me Chal (36.72%) and Hi II type (<10%), respectively. Yellowish friable embryogenic callus (YFEC) such as type II callus of Hi II genotype only produced from the HW3 and Heug Jeom Chal, whereas other cultivars and genotypes were directly formed somatic embryos with late-embryonic stages or expanded yellowish compact somatic embryo with morphological abnormality. The yellowish friable embryogenic callus (YFEC) could be proliferated on the same medium, which were maintained embryogenic capacity for 6 months over. Upon transfer to first regeneration and second regeneration medium, somatic embryos converted to plantlets at a frequency of approximately 100%. However, the expanded somatic embryos with abnormal morphology were slowly proliferated when subcultured on the same medium, and some of them were degenerated or converted to plantlets at a frequency of approximately 25%. Accordingly, The Heug Jeom Chal and HW3 genotype will be further used for development of high frequency transformation system in domestic maize germplasm.

A Comparative Study on Isoflavone Intakes and Blood Lipids between Hypertensive and Normotensive (고혈압 환자와 정상인의 이소플라본 섭취와 혈중 지질상태 비교연구)

  • It has been suggested that isoflavones protect the cardiovascular system, in part by attenuating blood pressure. The purpose of the present research was to compare the isoflavone intake and blood lipids between hypertensive and normotensive and to examine dietary management for prevention of hypertension. Anthropometrical measurements, blood pressures, nutrients and isoflavone intakes using the 24-hour recall method, and serum lipids of 81 hypertensives and 77 normotensives were estimated. The average age, height, weight, and BMI were 58.2 years, l58.5 cm, 64.3 kg, and $25.6kg/m^2$ for the hypertensive and 58.0 years, 159.4 cm, 63.0 kg, and $24.8kg/m^2$ for the normotensive, respectively. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures of the hypertensive were significantly higher than those of the normotensive (p<0.001, p<0.001). The daily food intake of the hypertensive was significantly lower than that of the normotensive (p<0.01). The daily energy intakes of hypertensive and normotesive were 1479.8 kcal and 1590.9 kcal and there was no significant difference between the two groups. Carbohydrate intake of the hypertensive was significantly higher than that of the normotensive (p<0.05). However, daily intakes of plant protein, fiber, ash, calcium, sodium, potassium, and vitamin $B_1$ of the hypertensive were significantly lower than those of the normotensive (p<0.05, p<0.01, p<0.01, p<0.01, p<0.05, p<0.05, p<0.05). The daily intakes of daidzein, genistein, isoflavone of the hypertensive were significantly lower than those of the normotensive (p<0.05, p<0.05, p<0.05). However, isoflavone intakes per 1000 kcal showed no significant difference between the two groups. Serum lipids of the hypertensive and normotensive were l89.6 mg/dL and l87.2 mg/dL for total cholesterol, 157.3 mg/dL and 161.9 mg/dL for triglyceride, 42.9 mg/dL and 43.5 mg/dL for HDL-cholesterol, 115.2 mg/dL and 111.4 mg/dL for LDL-cholesterol, and 3.5 and 3.4 for atherogenic index. In the total subjects, there was a significantly negative correlation between systolic blood pressure and genistein intake (p<0.05). Based on these results, we concluded that the daily intakes of food, energy, and isoflavones of hypertensives were lower than normotensives. Therefore, it should be emphasized that proper dietary management considering these dietary factors for prevention of hypertension.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of zinc administration on the autistic children. The subject diagnosed as infantile autism were 24 male and 10 female children of a special school in Taegu city. Control group were selected from 1:2 ratio matched with cases on sex and age. The results were as followings. In female autistic group, the mean content of zinc in hair was significantly lower than control group, but in male the result was inverse at all age group. The content of zinc in hair showed significant correlation with age in male autistic group and control group. Zinc content of hair, age and sex accounted for 37.2% of the variance of autistic score and the most significant variable was zinc content. Autistic group were divided into two group. Group I which zinc content of hair below 150 ppm were administrated with multi-vitamin contained 10 mg of zinc, Group II which zinc content of hair above 150 ppm were administrated with placebo. Total administration period was eight weeks. In zinc administration group, there was a decreasing tendency of autistic score as the zinc content of hair was increased but the relationship was not statistically significant.

  • Studies on the varietal resistance and effects of nutrients for fungal growth were carried out in order to obtain basic materials for breeding resistant variety and control measures of the red pepper anthracnose disease caused by Colletotrichum dematium f. sp. capsicum. Four cultivars such as Kumchang No. 2, Bulamhouse, Pakistan, Hongilpum were resistant among twenty-one pepper cultivars, and five cultivars including Taiwan pepper were moderate. The remaining twelve cultivars including H-038 and Saegochu were susceptible. These susceptible cultivars were mostly belonged to sweet taste cultivars. Glucose was known the best source for fungal growth, and near 3 percent of carbon concentration was the best for mycelial growth of the fungus. Conidial sporulation was rather decreased by adding high concentrations of C-source, whereas fungal dry weight was a positive tendency in proportion to increasing carbon concentrations. N-sources and vitamins were not remarkable as that for carbon, and rather a decreasing trend for mycelial growth by adding N-source. Especially, the lowest of mycelial growth was in the case of Czapek-Dox plus ammonium sulfate. The medium plus vitamins either niacin or thiamine was slightly increased to mycelial growth.

Fruit-body Formation of Pleurotus florida on the Synthetic Medium (합성배지(合成培地)를 이용(利用)한 고온성(高溫性) 느타리버섯의 자실체(子實體) 형성(形成)에 관한 연구(硏究))

  • Nutritional and physio-chemical conditions for mycelial growth and fruit-body formation of Pleurotus florida were determined in synthetic media. Mannitol and sucrose were good sugar substances for the mycelial growth and fruit-body formation whereas less mycelial growth and no fruit-body formation was obtained with arabinose, lactose and inulin. The optimum concentration of mannitol was about 2%. Peptone as a nitrogen sources resulted in a rapid mycelial growth and fruit-body formation with higher yield, but nitrite-nitrogens inhibited the mycelial growth. The higher yield was obtained with 0.2% peptone. Among the vitamins used, the greatest mycelial growth and fruit-body formation brought about by thiamine and folic acid. $KH_2PO_4$ and $MgSO_4$ at 0.2% and 0.02%, respectively, were effective for the mycelial growth and fruit-body formation, but other inorganic salts used were ineffective. The optimum temperature for mycelial growth and fruit-body formation were $25^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$, respectively, and light intensity of $100{\sim}500\;lux$ and pH 6.0 appeared to be effective.

A Study on Food Behaviors and Food Preferences of the Tourism Transportation Business Managers in Daegu Areas by Age (대구지역 관광운수 영업자의 연령별 식행동 특성 및 음식 기호도 조사 연구)

  • This study was carried out to survey the eating behaviors and the food preferences of the tourism transportation business managers in Daegu areas by age. The survey was performed from 17 to August 25, 2003 by questionnaires and the subjects were 365 males. As a general factor, the subjects of survey were male drivers in their thirties to sixties. Their education level was middle school(44.9%) and high school(45.8%) diploma. This study showed that the managers eat three meals per day with high percentage(75.9%) and a large number of managers(24.1%) eat two meals only. 77.8% of the subjects responded that their diet life were irregular due to the property of their job. Frequency of eating-out turned out to be much higher in managers aged 60 over(p<0.001). They considered taste of the food firstly, and the prices of the food secondly, but the nutritional value of the food was considered with a low percentage(22.7%). We found that their BMI were overweight from 23.5 to 26.01, their calorie and some nutrient intakes were below their RDA. The most insufficiently consumed nutrient(less than 75% of RDA) was vitamin B₂ followed by calcium. The food preferences of subjects showed that the managers preferred boiled rice to any other rice as a staple foods. Their favorite menu of one-course Korean style meal turned out to be the bibimbob(boiled rice mixed with assorted vegetable and meat). As for subsidiary foods, out of all various meat soups, beef soups and beef-rib soups were most preferred. The most preferred stew were soybean paste stew and kimchi stew, and the most preferred cooked vegetables were cooked spinach, seasoned cucumber. Baechu kimchi(white cabbage kimchi) were the most preferred kind of kimchi. For desserts there was a very high preference for the watermelons, apples, and pears. For beverages the most preferred were ginseng tea, fruit juices and dietary fiber drinks. From the results listed above, the nutritional education needed to be done to the tourism transportation business managers to set the proper menu considering the characteristics of the preference each age group of managers.
