  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of vision and hearing limitation on the onset of disability among Korean elderly with the consideration of social participation and depression. Study population consisted of 2,670 people aged 65 and above who participated in both the 1st(2006) and 2nd(2008) wave of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging(KLoSA), and also reported no ADL or IADL disability in 2006. As the results, first, it found that vision and hearing limitation, social participation, and depression were significant risk factors for the onset of IADL disability in unadjusted analysis. After multivariable adjustment, however, only vision limitation showed significant association with the onset of IADL disability. Second, in the logistic analysis with four categorized variables(vision/hearing limitation + social participation, vision/hearing limitation + depression), the elderly who had vision or hearing limitation had a significantly 1.7 times higher odds ratio for disability onset if they also had low social participation compared with those who had no vision or hearing limitation, and high social participation. Whereas, depression was not significantly associated with the relationship between vision or hearing limitation, and disability onset. The study suggests that the intervention program developed to prevent social isolation of older people with vision or hearing limitation, may be helpful to reduce and postpone the risk of disability onset as well as early detection and treatment of vision or hearing problems.

  • Lots of 2D vision algorithms have been applied for inspection. However, these 2D vision algorithms have limitation in inspection applications which require 3D information data such as the height of semiconductor chips. Stereo vision is a well known method to measure the distance from the camera to the object to be measured. But it is difficult to apply for inspection directly because of its measurement error. In this paper, we propose two adjustment methods to reduce the error of the measured height data for stereo vision. The weight value based model is used to minimize the mean squared error. The average value based model is used with simple concept to reduce the measured error. The effect of these algorithms has been proved through the experiments which measure the height of semiconductor chips.

  • Background and objectives : Social phobia is a nervous anxiety characterized by one or more constant fear in social activity or specific situation which causes serious damage to individual's social functions leading to chronic functional impairment when it is untreated. The objective of this study is to report a new finding of a possible subtype of social phobia according to a case survey and study of sufferers found via online support group. Methods : A single case review using survey and interview on patient was employed. Following a no-treatment baseline period for examination and interview, biweekly acupuncture treatment with interview for in-depth examination was delivered for 6months. Also, for in-depth investigation of peripheral vision phobia, survey questionnaire was done by the members of a Korean support group on on-line social group forum. Result : A new type of social phobia which has not yet been reported nor mentioned in any journals, namely called 'peripheral vision phobia' has been identified. Biweekly acupuncture treatment reached a comfort state of mental status on one case of patient with social phobia. Limitation : Due to the shift of environment on patient's part, the termination of the school session at where the phobia occur the most, the reoccurrence of the phobia is yet to be examined. Also, the generalization of the new type of phobia as a subtype only by reviewing one case alone with survey interview of on-line social group has limitation. Conclusion : The result of the case review suggests that 'peripheral vision phobia' is strictly concentrated on malfunctioning of peripheral vision without functional or organic hindrance of pupils or of any parts of eyes including eye muscles due to peripheral vision phobia. PVP is similar to social phobia and it may be a subtype of social phobia, however, since etiology, diagnosis, medical treatment methods are under researched, investigation is yet to be done.

  • In this paper, we introduce an intelligent robotic arc welding system which exploits sensors like as LVS (Laser Vision Sensor), Hall effect sensor, voltmeter and so on. The use of industrial robot is saturated because of its own limitation, and one of the major limitations is that industrial robot cannot recognize the environment. Lately, sensor-based environmental awareness research of the industrial robot is performed actively to overcome such limitation, and it can expand application field and improve productivity. We classify the sensor-based intelligent arc welding robot system by the goal and the sensing data. The goals can be categorized into detection of a welding start point, tracking of a welding line and correction of a torch deformation. The Sensing data can be categorized into welding data (i.e. current, voltage and short circuit detection) and displacement data (i.e. distance, position). This paper covers not only the explanation of the each category but also its advantage and limitation.

  • In recent years, and with the increased adoption of digital transformation and spending long hours in front of these devices, clinicians have observed that the prolonged use of visual display units (VDUs) can result in a certain symptom complex, which has been defined as computer vision syndrome (CVS). This syndrome has been affected by many causes, such as light refractive errors, poor computer design, workplace ergonomics, and a highly demanding visual task. This research focuses on eliminating one of CVSs, which is the eye dry syndrome caused by infrequent eye blink rate while using a smart device for a long time. This research attempt to find a limitation on the current tools. In addition, exploring the other use cases to utilize the solution based on each vertical and needs.

  • In this study we examined the context effects in reading Hangul (Korean alphabets) in normal and low vision, using the two different reading techniques, self-paced reading (Experiment 1) and rapid serial visual presentation (Experiment 2). We compared the reading speed of participants with normal or low vision in sentences vs. randomly ordered words. The results from both experiments showed that the reading speed of participants with low vision slowed significantly relative to those with normal vision. However, the patterns in the size of context effects were different in the two experiments. The context effects were larger in low vision than in normal vision in self-paced reading, but they were smaller in low vision than in normal vision in RSVP. This result indicates that context may make a greater contribution for readers with low vision than for readers with normal vision when sufficient time is allowed to read; in contrary, its contribution is smaller for readers with low vision than for readers with normal vision when there is time limitation for reading.

  • Recently, there has been an increasing demand for computer-vision-based inspection and/or measurement system as a part of factory automation equipment. In general, it is almost impossible to check the fault of all parts, coming from part-feeding system, with only manual inspection because of time limitation. Therefore, most of manual inspection is applied to specific samples, not all coming parts, and manual inspection neither guarantee consistent measuring accuracy nor decrease working time. Thus, in order to improve the measuring speed and accuracy of the inspection, a computer-aided measuring and analysis method is highly needed. In this paper, a computer-vision-based pipe inspection system is proposed, where the front and side-view profiles of three different kinds of pipes, coming from a forming line, are acquired by computer vision. And the edge detection is processed by using Laplace operator. To reduce the vision processing time, modified Hough transform is used with clustering method for straight line detection. And the center points and diameters of inner and outer circle are found to determine eccentricity of the parts. Also, an inspection system has been built so that the data and images of faulted parts are stored as files and transferred to the server.

  • The problem of power consumption and the limitation of a chip area should be considered when the pixel number of the edge detection circuit increases to fabricate a vision chip for edge detection with high resolution. The numeric increment of the unit circuit causes power consumption to increase and require a larger chip area. An increment of power consumption and a limitation of chip area with several ten milli-meters square supplied by the CMOS foundry company restrict the pixel numbers of the edge detection circuit. In this paper, we proposed a electronic switch to minimize the power consumption owing to the numeric increment of the edge detection circuit to realize a vision chip for edge detection with high resolution. We also applied a method by which photodetector and edge detection circuit are separated to implement a vision chip with a higher resolution. The photodetector circuit with $128{\times}128$ pixels uses a common edge detection circuit with $1{\times}128$ pixels so that resolution was improved at the same chip area. The chip size is $4mm{\times}4mm$ and the power consumption was confirmed to be about 20mW using SPICE.

  • This paper presents the pose estimation of a small UAV utilizing visual information from low cost cameras installed indoor. To overcome the limitation of the outside flight experiment, the indoor flight test environment based on multi-camera systems is proposed. Computer vision algorithms for the proposed system include camera calibration, color marker detection, and pose estimation. The well-known extended Kalman filter is used to obtain an accurate position and pose estimation for the small UAV. This paper finishes with several experiment results illustrating the performance and properties of the proposed vision-based indoor flight test environment.
