Due to high spatio-temporal variability of amount and optical/microphysical properties of atmospheric aerosols, satellite-based observations have been demanded for spatiotemporal monitoring the major aerosols. Observations of the heavy aerosol episodes and determination on the dominant aerosol types from a geostationary satellite can provide a chance to prepare in advance for harmful aerosol episodes as it can repeatedly monitor the temporal evolution. A new geostationary observation sensor, namely the Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI), onboard the Himawari-8 platform, has been observing high spatial and temporal images at sixteen wavelengths from 2016. Using observed spectral visible reflectance and infrared brightness temperature (BT), the algorithm to find major aerosol type such as volcanic ash (VA), desert dust (DD), polluted aerosol (PA), and clean aerosol (CA), was developed. RGB color composite image shows dusty, hazy, and cloudy area then it can be applied for comparing aerosol detection product (ADP). The CALIPSO level 2 vertical feature mask (VFM) data and MODIS level 2 aerosol product are used to be compared with the Himawari-8/AHI ADP. The VFM products can deliver nearly coincident dataset, but not many match-ups can be returned due to presence of clouds and very narrow swath. From the case study, the percent correct (PC) values acquired from this comparisons are 0.76 for DD, 0.99 for PA, 0.87 for CA, respectively. The MODIS L2 Aerosol products can deliver nearly coincident dataset with many collocated locations over ocean and land. Increased accuracy values were acquired in Asian region as POD=0.96 over land and 0.69 over ocean, which were comparable to full disc region as POD=0.93 over land and 0.48 over ocean. The Himawari-8/AHI ADP algorithm is going to be improved continuously as well as the validation efforts will be processed by comparing the larger number of collocation data with another satellite or ground based observation data.
The first Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) onboard its Communication Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) is scheduled for launch in 2008. GOCI includes the eight visible-to-near-infrared (NIR) bands, 0.5km pixel resolution, and a coverage region of 2500 ${\times}$ 2500km centered at 36N and 130E. GOCI has had the scope of its objectives broadened to understand the role of the oceans and ocean productivity in the climate system, biogeochemical variables, geological and biological response to physical dynamics and to detect and monitor toxic algal blooms of notable extension through observations of ocean color. The special feature with GOCI is that like MODIS, MERIS and GLI, it will include the band triplets 660-680-745 for the measurements of sun-induced chlorophyll-a fluorescence signal from the ocean. The GOCI will provide SeaWiFS quality observations with frequencies of image acquisition 8 times during daytime and 2 times during nighttime. With all the above features, GOCI is considered to be a remote sensing tool with great potential to contribute to better understanding of coastal oceanic ecosystem dynamics and processes by addressing environmental features in a multidisciplinary way. To achieve the objectives of the GOCI mission, we develop the GOCI Data Processing System (GDPS) which integrates all necessary basic and advanced techniques to process the GOCI data and deliver the desired biological and geophysical products to its user community. Several useful ocean parameters estimated by in-water and other optical algorithms included in the GDPS will be used for monitoring the ocean environment of Korea and neighbouring countries and input into the models for climate change prediction.
Four programs, i.e. TRMM, ADEOS2, ASTER, and ALOS are going on in Japanese Earth Observation programs. TRMM and ASTER are operating well, and TRMM operation will be continued to 2009. ADEOS2 was failed, but AMSR-E on Aqua is operating. ALOS (Advanced Land Observing Satellite) was successfully launched on $24^{th}$ Jan. 2006. ALOS carries three instruments, i.e., PRISM (Panchromatic Remote Sensing Instrument for Stereo Mapping), AVNIR-2 (Advanced Visible and Near Infrared Radiometer), and PALSAR (Phased Array L band Synthetic Aperture Radar). PRISM is a 3 line panchromatic push broom scanner with 2.5m IFOV. AVNIR-2 is a 4 channel multi spectral scanner with 10m IFOV. PALSAR is a full polarimetric active phased array SAR. PALSAR has many observation modes including full polarimetric mode and scan SAR mode. After the unfortunate accident of ADEOS2, JAXA still have plans of Earth observation programs. Next generation satellites will be launched in 2008-2012 timeframe. They are GOSAT (Greenhouse Gas Observation Satellite), GCOM-W and GCOM-C (ADEOS-2 follow on), and GPM (Global Precipitation Mission) core satellite. GOSAT will carry 2 instruments, i.e. a green house gas sensor and a cloud/aerosol imager. The main sensor is a Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) and covers 0.76 to 15 ${\mu}m$ region with 0.2 to 0.5 $cm^{-1}$ resolution. GPM is a joint project with NASA and will carry two instruments. JAXA will develop DPR (Dual frequency Precipitation Radar) which is a follow on of PR on TRMM. Another project is EarthCare. It is a joint project with ESA and JAXA is going to provide CPR (Cloud Profiling Radar). Discussions on future Earth Observation programs have been started including discussions on ALOS F/O.

Thermal Imaging systems are reported to be crucial for fire fighting and beginning to be used by fire fighters. The performance of thermal imaging system is determined by both the radiation of infrared from the target and the attenuation of infrared signal in the optical path by the absorption, scattering, diffraction and reflection. In the scene of fire, water drops with various sizes such as vaporized water, wafer mist from sprinkler, and wafer to suppress the fire reside with various gas generated by burning. To measure the transmission of infrared radiation in the scene of fire, fire simulating system and thermal imagers with cooled detector which detects $3{\sim}5{\mu}m$ infrared and uncooled detector fabricated by the MEMS technology which detects $8{\sim}12{\mu}m$ infrared. are made. With thermal imagers and Ire simulating system, the change of thermal image with respect to the change of visibility controlled with the burned fas was measured. It was found that the transmission of infrared was not reduced by the burned gas, which could be explained by the long wavelength of infrared ray compared with visible ray. However, the transmission of infrared ray was largely reduced by the combination of burned gas and water mist supplied by sprinkler. This is contrary to the results of calculated transmission through the pure water mist and shows that the transmission of infrared ray is mostly affected by the compounds of water mist and burned gas. In this case, it was found that the uncooled detector which detects $8{\sim}12{\mu}m$ infrared ray is better than cooled detector which detects $3{\sim}5{\mu}m$ infrared ray for fire fighting.
In this study, calibration processes and methods of evaluating the radiometric quality of satellite images from the meteorological payload on the GEO-KOMPSAT-2A were described. MTF(Modulation Transfer Function), SNR(Signal-To-Noise Ratio), NEdT(Noise Equivalent Delta Temperature), and Dynamic Range, which are the major parameters for assessment of data radiometric quality of space-borne visible and infrared sensors, are focused. Key process of the quality check of the satellite data is the comparing the image radiometric performance parameters during the In-Oribit Test with those acquired from the ground tests. Validation plan of the image quality of the GEO-KOMPSAT-2A Meteorological Imager is addressed based on the analyses results of COMS MI data during the COMS In-Orbit Test period
To investigate properties of the stellar contents of the resolved asymptotic giant branch stars in the nearby dwarf galaxies, we obtained wide-field JHKs images of the dwarf irregular galaxies NGC 6822, IC 1613 and the dwarf elliptical galaxy NGC 205, using the WIRCam near-infrared imager of the CFHT. The obtained (J-Ks, Ks) and (H-Ks, Ks) color-magnitude diagrams for the resolved stars in the galaxies contain populations of foreground stars, super giant stars, red giant stars and the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. Using corollary photometric data in the visible bands, AGB stars were selected in the color-magnitude diagrams with a wide wavelength baseline in color indices. In color-color diagrams of the resolved AGB stars, we identified C stars from M giant stars for each galaxies, i.e., 726 C stars in NGC 6822, 126 C stars in IC 1613 and 593 C stars in NGC 205. The number ratios of C stars to M-giants were estimated to be $0.59\pm0.03$ in NGC 6822, $0.30\pm0.03$ in IC 1613 and $0.14\pm0.01$ in NGC 205. From analyses of the correlations of the spatial distribution of the C/M ratios with the HI properties and dynamical structures of the target galaxies, we discuss environmental effects of the star formation in the galaxies. We also discuss the epochs of the AGB star formation in the galaxies by comparing theoretical isochrones with the color distributions and luminosity functions of the AGB stars.
The satellite visible data have been successfully applied to study the ocean color. Another ocean color sensor, the Ocean Scanning Multi-spectral Imager (OSMI) on the Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite (KOMPSAT) will be launched in 1999. In order to understand the characteristics of future OSMI images, we have first discussed the simulation models and procedures in detail, and produced typical patterns of radiances at visible bands by using radiative transfer models. The various simulated images of full satellite passes and Korean local areas for different seasons, water types, and the satellite crossing equator time (CET) are presented to illustrate the distribution of each component of radiance (i.e., aerosol scattering, Rayleigh scattering, sun glitter, water-leaving radiance, and total radiance). A method to evaluate the image quality and availability is then developed by using the characteristics of image defined as the Complex Signal Noise Ratio (CSNR). Meanwhile, a series of CSNR images are generated from the simulated radiance components for different cases, which can be used to evaluate the quality and availability of OSMI images before the KOMPSAT will be placed in orbit. Finally, the quality and availability of OSMI images are quantitatively analyzed by the simulated CSNR image. It is hoped that the results would be useful to all scientists who are in charge of OSMI mission and to those who plan to use the data from OSMI.

This study has investigated the suitable wavelength for detecting biomass burning aerosols. We have performed the analysis of the wavelength at 380nm in near-UV, 400nm, 412nm, 460nm, and 490nm in visible, and 2100nm in shortwave infrared regions from the Global Imager measurements. It is well known that the UV bands have the advantage of the aerosols retrieval due to the low surface reflectance and a weak effect of Bidirectional Reflectivity Distribution Function. However, the pure surface reflectances of shortwave visible bands, except 412nm, are as low as that of 380nm in near-UV over northeast Asia. In order to detect the aerosol signal, we have retrieved the aerosol reflectance as a function of wavelength based on the surface reflectivity contrast method for the period of May 2003. It is interesting that the retrieved aerosol reflectance with 460nm is slightly more sensitive than that with 380nm. Additionally, we have applied the TOMS aerosol index method to determine the best pair for biomass burning aerosols and found that the pair of 380 and 460nm results in the best signal for retrieving aerosols.
Global warming causes climate change and increases extreme weather events worldwide, and the occurrence of heatwaves and droughts is also increasing in Korea. For the monitoring of extreme weather, various satellite data such as LST (Land Surface Temperature), TCI (Temperature Condition Index), NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), VCI (Vegetation Condition Index), and VHI (Vegetation Health Index) have been used. VHI, the combination of TCI and VCI, represents the vegetation stress affected by meteorological factors like precipitation and temperature and is frequently used to assess droughts under climate change. TCI and VCI require historical reference values for the LST and NDVI for each date and location. So, it is complicated to produce the VHI from the recent satellite GK2A (Geostationary Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-2A). This study examined the retrieval of VHI using GK2A AMI (Advanced Meteorological Imager) by referencing the historical data from VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) NDVI and LST as a proxy data. We found a close relationship between GK2A and VIIRS data needed for the retrieval of VHI. We produced the TCI, VCI, and VHI for GK2A during 2020-2021 at intervals of 8 days and carried out the interpretations of recent extreme weather events in Korea. GK2A VHI could express the changes in vegetation stress in 2020 due to various extreme weather events such as heatwaves (in March and June) and low temperatures (in April and July), and heavy rainfall (in August), while NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) VHI could not well represent such characteristics. The GK2A VHI presented in this study can be utilized to monitor the vegetation stress due to heatwaves and droughts if the historical reference values of LST and NDVI can be adjusted in a more statistically significant way in the future work.
Aerosol Optical Properties (AOPs) are retrieved using the geostationary satellite instruments such as Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI), Meteorological Imager (MI), and Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) through Yonsei AErosol Retrieval algorithm (YAER). In this study, the retrieved aerosol optical depths (AOD)s from each instrument were intercompared and validated with the ground-based sunphotometer AErosol Robotic NETwork (AERONET) data. As a result, the four AOD products derived from different instruments showed consistent results over land and ocean. However, AODs from MI and GOCI tend to be overestimated due to cloud contamination. According to the comparison results with AERONET, the percentage within expected errors (EE) are 36.3, 48.4, 56.6, and 68.2% for MI, GOCI, AHI-minimum reflectivity method (MRM), and AHI-estimated surface reflectance from shortwave Infrared (ESR) product, respectively. Since MI AOD is retrieved from a single visible channel, and adopts only one aerosol type by season, EE is relatively lower than other products. On the other hand, the AHI ESR is more accurate than the minimum reflectance method as used by GOCI, MI, and AHI MRM method in May and June when the vegetation is relatively abundant. These results are explained by the RMSE and the EE for each AERONET site. The ESR method result show to be better than the other satellite product in terms of EE for 15 out of 22 sites used for validation, and they are better than the other product for 13 sites in terms of RMSE. In addition, the error in observation time in each product is found by using characteristics of geostationary satellites. The absolute median biases at 00 to 06 Universal Time Coordinated (UTC) are 0.05, 0.09, 0.18, 0.18, 0.14, 0.09, and 0.10. The absolute median bias by observation time has appeared in MI and the only 00 UTC appeared in GOCI.
