  • A layer of compressible, rotating, elastica-viscous fluid heated & soluted from below is considered in the presence of vertical magnetic field to include the effect of Hall currents. Dispersion relation governing the effect of viscoelasticity, salinity gradient, rotation, magnetic field and Hall currents is derived. For the case of stationary convection, the Rivlin-Erickson fluid behaves like an ordinary Newtonian fluid. The compressibility, stable solute gradient, rotation and magnetic field postpone the onset of thermosolutal instability whereas Hall currents are found to hasten the onset of thermosolutal instability in the absence of rotation. In the presence of rotation, Hall currents postpone/hasten the onset of instability depending upon the value of wavenumbers. Again, the dispersion relation is analyzed numerically & the results depicted graphically. The stable solute gradient and magnetic field (and corresponding Hall currents) introduce oscillatory modes in the system which were non-existent in their absence. The case of overstability is discussed & sufficient conditions for non-existence of overstability are derived.

  • A parametric study has been accomplished to figure out the effects of elliptic cylinder thickness, angle of attack, and Reynolds number on the unsteady lift and drag forces exerted on the elliptic cylinder. A two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes flow solver is developed based on the SIMPLER method in the body-intrinsic coordinates system to analyze the unsteady viscous flow over elliptic cylinder. Thickness-to-chord ratios of 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6 elliptic cylinders are simulated at different Reynolds numbers of 400 and 600, and angles of attack of $10^{\circ},\;20^{\circ},\;and\;30^{\circ}$. Through this study, it is observed that the elliptic cylinder thickness, angle of attack, and Reynolds number are very important parameters to decide the lift and drag forces. All these parameters also affect significantly the frequencies of the unsteady force oscillations.

  • The Saffman-Taylor instability mechanisms in laminar premixed flames in a Hele-Shaw cell are investigated using two-dimensional numerical simulations with Poiseuille assumption for the viscous effect. The baseline calculations considering the Darrieus-Landau and diffusive-thermal instability modes show the results consistent with the classical linear instability theory. With the Saffrnan-Taylor instability mechanism. the overall effect is to enhance the destabilizing mechanism by providing an increased viscous force in the product gas. The linear instability behavior is found to qualitatively similar to the Darrieus-Landau mechanism. However, the results in the nonlinear range demonstrate that there may exist distinct characteristic time scales associated with Darrieus-Landau and Saffman-Taylor mechanisms, such that the latter effect sustains longer in time, contributing to a higher overall flame speed.

  • Approximate analysis for a building installed with a friction damper is revisited to get insight of its dynamic behavior. Energy balance equation is used to have a closed analytical form solution of dynamic magnification factor (DMF) for the building with combined viscous and friction damping. It is found out that DMF is dependent on friction force ratio and resonance frequency. Linear transfer function from input external force to output building displacement is obtained by simplifying DMF equation. Root mean square of building displacement is derived under earthquake-like random excitation. Finally, design of friction damper is proposed by processing target control ratio, damping ratio factor, and friction force in sequence.

  • Two dimensional slow viscous flow around two counter-rotating equal cylinders is Investigated based on Stokes' approximation. An exact formal expression of the stream function is obtained by using the bipolar cylinder coordinates and Fourier series expansion. From the stream function obtained, the streamline patterns around the cylinders are shown and the pressure distribution In the flow field is determined. By Integrating the stress distribution on the cylinder, the force and the moment exerted on the cylinder are calculated. The flow rate through the gap between the two cylinders is determined as the distance between two cylinders vary. It Is also revealed that the velocity at the far field has finite non-zero value. Special attention is directed to the case of very small distances between two cylinders by way of the lubrication theory.

  • In order to improve the efficiency of hydraulic gear pumps or motors especially for high operating pressure, power losses due to viscous friction and leak flow through gear teeth end-gaps are considered in this paper. Optimal gaps minimizing the power loss for pumps and motors with uniform heights of gaps are analysed first. And the effect of the shapes of gaps with unequal heights on the power loss are studied and discussed by simulation. Considering that the outer shell lacing gear teeth may expand due to high internal pressure or thermal stress, the results drawn in this paper can be used for the design of high efficiency pumps and motors.

  • The energy-transmitting boundary, which is used in the well-known finite element method (FEM) program FLUSH, is quite efficient for the earthquake response analysis of buildings considering soil-structure interaction. However, it is applicable only in the frequency domain. The author proposed methods for transforming frequency dependent impedance into the time domain, and studied the time domain transform of the boundary. In this paper, first, the estimation methods for both the halfspace condition under the bottom of the soil model and the pseudo three-dimensional effect were studied with the time domain transmitting boundary. Next, response behavior when using the boundary was studied in detail using a practical soil and building model. The response accuracy was compared with those using viscous boundary, and the boundary that considers the excavation force. Through these studies, the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed time domain transmitting boundary were confirmed.
