  • Embedding viscoelastic-damping materials into composites can greatly increase the damping properties of composite structures. Usually viscoelastic-damping materials behave isotropically so that their damping properties are the same in all directions. In these days, there is a desire to develop viscoelastic-damping materials that behave orthotropically so that damping properties vary with material orientation. These orthotropic damping materials can be made by embedding rows of thin wires within the viscoelastic materials. These wires add significant directional stiffness to the damping materials. where the stiffness variation with wire orientation follows classical lamination theory. In this paper, the loss factor of composite laminate was evaluated based on Ni and Adams' theory. To investigate the effect of directional damping material, the low-velociy impact response analysis was also performed. The present analysis results show that directional damping material has a great influence on vibration and damping characteristic of composite laminate.

  • Damping materials are widely used to reduce vibration or noise generation of structures. To understand their damping capability and for use in numerical simulations, their viscoelastic properties should be measured in the frequency range of interest. In this study, experimental setup is proposed to measure materials properties of very compliant polymer materials. The polymer materials used in this study are difficult to form into rod shapes, and typical resonance methods are not applicable. In the proposed measurement setup, the damping materials were modeled as a simple viscoelastic support at one end of the beam. Their properties were measured through analysis of their effects on the wave propagation characteristics of the beam structure.

  • Viscoelastic materials shows the characteristics of elasticity and viscosity. Unlike metals which show negligible damping value, the damping characteristics of viscoelastic materials like rubber mounts is very important in the analysis of the dynamic system. So there has been a great interest in measuring the damping characteristics of viscoelastic materials. There are two kinds of methods which the damping characteristics can be measured. One is the resonant method where loss factor can be measured only in the resonant frequency. The other is the nonresonant method which is characterized by the impedance method are introduced. The impedance test results, the loss factor by the impedance method are compared to the results of the resonant method and recommendations in the experimental setup are suggested.

  • Optimal damping layout of the constrained viscoelastic damping layer on beam is identified with temperatures by using a gradient-based numerical search algorithm. An optimal design problem is defined in order to determine the constrained damping layer configuration. A finite element formulation is introduced to model the constrained damping layer beam. The four-parameter fractional derivative model and the Arrhenius shift factor are used to describe dynamic characteristics of viscoelastic material with respect to frequency and temperature. Frequency-dependent complex-valued eigenvalue problems are solved by using a simple resubstitution algorithm in order to obtain the loss factor of each mode and responses of the structure. The results of the numerical example show that the proposed method can reduce frequency responses of beam at peaks only by reconfiguring the layout of constrained damping layer within a limited weight constraint.

  • Viscoelastic materials are widely used to solve the vibration and noise problems. To apply the well-known damping technologies successfully to the vibration and noise problems, the damping characteristics of the viscoelastic materials applied to the base structures must be thoroughly understood. The objectives of the present study are : 1) to establish the damping measurement technique via modal testing by which the damping characteristics of viscoelastic materials can be measured in the university laboratory environment, and 2) to develop a computer program to draw the reduced-frequency-nomogram by use of restricted number of experimental data, which can be used efficiently for the damping analysis and application.

  • Length of an unconstrained viscoelastic damping layer on beams is determined to maximizeloss factor using a numerical search method. The fractional derivative model can describe damping characteristics of viscoelastic damping materials accurately, and is used to represent nonlinearity of complex modulus with frequencies and temperatures. Equivalent flexural rigidity of the unconstrained beam is obtained using Ross, Ungar, Kelvin[RUK] equation. The loss factors of partially covered unconstrained beam are calculated by a modal strain energy method. Optimal lengths of the unconstrained viscoelastic damping layer of beams are identified with ambient temperatures and thickness ratios of beam and damping layer by using a finite-difference-based steepest descent method.

  • Offshore structures, such as a platform, a buoy, or a floating vessel, are exposed to several dynamic loads, and viscoelastic damping material is used to reduce the vibration of offshore structures. It is important to know the properties of viscoelastic materials because loss factor and Young's modulus of the viscoelastic damping material are dependent on frequency and temperature. In this study, an advanced technique for obtaining accurate loss factor and Young's modulus of the viscoelastic damping material is introduced based on a multi degree of freedom curve-fitting method and the RKU (Ross-Kerwin-Ungar) equations. The technique is based on a modified experimental procedure from ASTM E 756-04. Loss factor and Young's modulus of the viscoelastic damping material are measured for different temperatures by performing the test in a temperature-controlled vibration measurement room where temperature varies from 5 to 45 degrees Celsius.

  • The viscoelastic layer material is widely used to control the noise and vibration characteristics of the panel structure. This paper describes the design technology of the effective vibration damping treatment using the concept of the equivalent parameter of viscoelastic layer materials. Applying the equivalent parameter concepts based on theories of shell, it is possible to simulate the finite element analysis of damping layer panel treatments on the vibration characteristics of the structure. And it is achieved the reduced computational cost and the optimal design of topological distribution for the reduction of vibration effect.

  • Modal damping characteristics of the flexural vibration of a sandwich beam with paaially inserted viscoelastic layer have been quantitatively studied using the finite element analysis in combination with an experiment. Antisymmetric mode shapes of the flexural vibration were visualized by the holographic interferometry and agreed with those calculated by the finite element simulation. Effects of the length and thickness of partial viscoelastic layers on the system loss factor($\mu$) and resonant frequency($\omega$) were considerably latge at both symmetric and antisymmetric modes of the sandwich beam.

  • Many of steel structures having little internal damping consist of stiffened plates. In case that viscoelastic materials are adhered to the stiffened plates for the reduction of structure-borne noise, their effects are varied by the adhered position and dynamic characteristics of the structures as well as their material properties and adhered amount. In this paper, sound reduction effects of viscoelastic materials partially adhered to the different positions of a stiffened steel plate have been investigated by the measurement of vibratory velocity and sound intensity. The results show that optimal adherent positions of viscoelastic materials to reduce sound radiation power are the loop areas of modes.
